Friday 23rd September
Dear Parents / Carers and Friends of Bolingbroke,
On Friday 23rd September, the school community welcomed parents, governors & special guests to a packed
Speech Day at St. Michael’s Church. In all, 111 pupils had their achievements recognised at an event which is
one of the highlights of the Bolingbroke Academy calendar. In the morning, the Senior School received their
prizes and the guest speaker was Michael Crick who gave an inspiring speech about his life as a journalist and the
value of getting an education in today’s ever changing world.
After lunch, at the Junior Prize Giving, the guest speaker was actor David Gyasi who kindly shared his personal
journey facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles and challenges on his path to success.
On the next page is a transcript of the Principal’s review 2015-16.
The audience was treated to a stirring
performance of ‘Seasons of Love’ from
Rent by the Senior Choir and ’America’
from West Side Story by Dill Shepherd
and Betty Smith on trumpet, sounding
superb in our beautiful St. Michael’s
church. This was followed by the pupils
being presented with the prizes for their
achievements.

What was your highlight of the academ-
ic year 2015-16?
For me there were so many. It is the year we
went from 360 to 480 pupils. I returned from
maternity leave to welcome the Class of 2022 on
their first day – every year since 2012 the start
of a new academic year has been a privilege and
a highlight for me. After the first day Mr Speight
commenced the year at the helm and I would
like to take this opportunity to formally thank
him for looking after you all and ensuring that
our 4th academic year got off to a flying start.
When I think about all the achievements of
480 pupils it amazes me. Our pupils grow and
develop beyond our expectations and our staff
continue to do whatever it takes to ensure the
building blocks of success are taught to enable
every child to look back on the past year with a
sense of pride.
Every year we produce a new film for prospec-tive pupils and parents. This year is no excep-
tion for the Class of 2024 to come. I would like
to say a special thank you to Shannon Clark,
Charlie Coulson, Iyari Orlebar-Earle & Roberta
Stilgoe who have made this film possible. This
year we created the film with the theme “A day
in the life of…”
Academically our pupils in English, Maths &
Science achieved significantly above average
results in national GL assessments. These as-
sessments have enabled us to bench-mark their
success and put our pupils on track for spectacu-
lar results in the future. Their achievements are echoed in our English enriched curriculum Jack
Petchy Shout Out competition for which I was
honoured to be a member of the judging panel.
In Maths our first UK Intermediate Maths
Challenge Gold went to Alexa Scutt-Thomson
along with10 Silver and 25 Bronze awards.
Sadly we said farewell to Ms Donaldson, who
has moved to Bristol, who brought passion and
resilience to ensure lasting foundations are built
for the new era of Maths GCSE. Pupils made us
all proud when they won the Ark Maths Chal-
lenge Shield for the second time in 3 years.
In Science pupils success was reflected in our
high energy Science Week lead by Ms Pinner.
Highlights included- I should add for pupils, to
dissect a sheep’s head and make indoor fire-
works! Speakers came from Cambridge and
Southampton Universities to inspire our children
to consider going into careers in Science.
Last summer term 12 pupils sat their first
GCSE’s – pupils in Year 9 & 10. Officially their
results put us on the academic pathways of
success achieving no less than 100% A*-A – no
excuses. In total 13 Community Language
GCSE examinations were sat in French, German,
Italian and Spanish. This is no easy task to
manage with the additional workload whilst
studying for the language curriculum and for
many being involved in Shakespeare Schools
Festival, Sporting leagues and Musical perfor-
mances. Congratulations to all those pupils.
Last year discussions began with a German
Partner School, Philipp Melanchthon Gymnasium
in Meine. After a short visit in June Ms Sher-
man arranged for two pupils to live and work in
Germany for two weeks. To steal a few words
from Eugenie ““The trip to PMG and Germa-
ny was very interesting and I would recommend
other Bolingbroke pupils to get involved they will
have memories and make friends to last a life
time. I lived in a village and like many others
one had to take the bus to school if parents
could not drive one there. At the bus stop, the
students line up their bags in the order they have
arrived and that is the order in which you enter
the bus. The school day starts at 8 and ends at 2
or 3 so that the afternoon is for relaxing or doing
sport. During my work experience, I followed
teachers around, but my favourite part was inter-
acting with the fünften Klasse (Year 6), yes,
secondary school starts at Year 6 - as they were
very sweet and not shy to ask me questions...in
English!” Eugenie & Moniece we are so proud
of the Courage you demonstrated to live with a
family you didn’t know & work in a new environ-
ment so unfamiliar to you. It’s an experience
you will both never forget.
Moving from languages to Humanities the
Humanities team clocked up 8 curriculum trips
across years 9 & 10 locally and abroad including
GCSE Geography fieldwork at Kew, a visit to the
Battlefields and St. Paul’s Cathedral.
I hope you feel that the film I have shown
earlier just gives you a flavour of the talents and
achievements of all our children. Our performing
arts achievements across all academic years are
astonishing. Early in the autumn term our
Shakespeare School Festival cast of 19 took to
the stage. The cast dazzled the audience with
their performance of Twelfth Night at the pres-
tigious RADA theatre in London. The quality of
performance was set so high that every future
year has a hard act to follow. Thank you to Ms
Khan & Ms Nobes who enabled the cast to
achieve so much in their performance.
Next to hit our Bolingbroke stage was the cast
of Bugsy Malone – the 1920s Chicago gangsters
production. It was our first musical produced by
Mr Kalorkoti, musically directed by Ms Breckon
& choreographed by Ms Tibbetts. The Cast of
55 took our breath away as they brought each
character to life. This highly praised production
ran for 3 nights and we witnessed parents, staff
and children frequently return for a second view-
ing to absorb the atmosphere and admire the
cast’s musical talents.
We closed the academic year with our Sumer
Splash Music Concert – an evening of sheer
musical delight and entertainment. The 20th
Century Fox Fun Fair arrangements of Star
Wars, Jurassic Park, Rocky & a personal favour-
ite Mr Blue Sky. The second half opened with a
staff flash mob of “A Lion Sleeps Tonight” – the
high notes were exceptional! The event, which
was first performed at the Barbican Centre, drew
to a close with a performance by Arthur Kergall
& Moniece Mullings, our Music Scholars, with
our orchestra who raised the roof with their
performance of Phantom of the Opera – It was
sensational.
In Sport many of boys & girls were selected to
represent Wandworth Borough in Football, Hock-
ey, Basketball & Athletics. We won the Hand-
ball U15 Wandsworth league, U13 Football 6-a-
side Wandsworth Competition and pupils won
the Wandsworth Cross-country Championships.
Our sporting achievements go from strength to
strength and our 4th Sports Day was no excep-
tion. This year, won by Erskine, the atmosphere
and support for each athlete was fantastic.
Thank you to Mr Jones & his team for coordinat-
ing an impressive day. However I am still not
sure pupils standing in for the parents’ annual
tug of war with a 5:1 pupil to staff member ratio
was quite what we anticipated!
Bolingbroke Academy isn not just about aca-
demic success. It is about the whole child. It is
about ensuring that every child has the chance to
participate, innovate and enjoy new activities.
Last year over 100 clubs from forensic science to
fencing enthused and fostered pupils’ interests.
House competitions, Charity fundraising of nearly
£2,000 for local and national charities, Master-
chef & Bake Off, Sports and additional lan-
guages all contribute to daily life at Bolingbroke
academy. Friday afternoons are the ‘icing on the
cake’ for many pupils and staff. After 4 years of
Duke of Edinburgh programming record num-
bers are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh
Bronze Award this year. 88 pupils are ready to
go on their Bronze expedition & four pupils have
been signed off to achieve our first Bronze
Awards.
A successful school such as ours is only as
good as the exceptional staff who work in it. We
are incredibly fortunate here at Bolingbroke
Academy to recruit talented, passionate and
caring staff. Their commitment to our school is
astonishing and it is something parents and
pupils praise again and again.
I believe it is important to have a school where
traditions matter; tradition is to value the hand-
ing down from year group to year group and in
years to come generation to generation. Today
is an important tradition to value which recognis-
es the hard work of our pupils, parents & staff.
When you look at the trophies and prizes to be
given out today they are testimony to the aca-
demic excellence and diverse range of talents our
children bring to academy life.
Bolingbroke Academy is an exciting, innovating
and successful environment in which the best
staff want to work and develop and I believe that
this is what we are and must continue to strive
to be.
Lastly to our parents & carers for your contin-
ued support and feedback. The Parent Council
has fundraised nearly £12,000 profit through
Sponsorship, Parent Quiz Night and the Spring
Fair just to mention a few events. Your involve-
ment matters however small or large – thank
you.
As I come to the end of my review of 2015-
2016 I reflect back on how each year we needed
to tweak and develop our practice. When we do
this we go from strength to strength. Everyone in this room - parents, pupils and staff have set
remarkable foundations for our young people to
thrive and excel in this academic year. It is a big
year ahead; opening a sixth form and of course
our Class of 2019’s first set of academic results.
Every year we believe in greater achievements
for each of you - this year will be no exception.

WOW TALKS - WOMEN IN TECH
By Ms Robinson
We were very lucky to be invited to a WOW Talks flagship event -
WOW Talks // Women in Tech on Tuesday 20th Septem-
ber. Ms Robinson, Ms Coyte and 20 year 9-11 girls enjoyed the
thought-provoking talks given by the female speakers who left the girls
feeling inspired about potential career paths and about all the excit-
ing possibilities world of technology offers.
Over 400 girls from different schools spent the day at the Royal Geographical society listening to inspiring women
talk about their careers, our pupils got the opportunity to take part in a speed mentoring event meeting women en-
trepreneurs from all over London. They also tried out different tech inventions, including virtual reality head sets.
We were really inspired by Laura Haynes, Chairman of UN Women NC UK's inspiring talk on gender diversity and
the HeForShe campaign which we explored on our phones. You should all sign up now http://www.heforshe.org/en
We also thought about our wishes and how to help other people fulfil their wishes using Wisher. http://
www.wisher.com/
The girls left with renewed energy to pursue their own dreams and I am sure it shifted the girls' pre-conceived
perceptions about what technology is and who it is for.
Some of the amazing women we met:
Priya Lakhani OBE started her career as a barrister, specialising in libel, privacy and reporting restrictions for the
press including representing a newspaper in the House of Lords at the age of 25. In 2008, Priya successfully launched
a FMCG business and launched products into nationwide supermarket chains and independent retailers. Passionate
about CSR and incorporating a ONE=ONE model, the company’s charitable arm provided millions of meals and
35,000 vaccinations to the underprivileged.
Genevieve Smith-Nunes is the founder of readysaltedcode CIC which is a not for profit organisation providing inno-
vative digital computer science STEAM focused education & curriculum opportunities. They provide workshops,
training and produce data driven dance performance to highlight, engage and encourage people into loving computer
science education.

Bolingbroke to take part in UK's
largest youth consultation
Bolingbroke Academy is taking part in the annual
Make Your Mark ballot, the largest consultation of
young people in the country.
In a national ballot running from 12th August until
5th October, young people across the country will
be asked what issues matter most to them, in order
to determine what is debated by the UK Youth Par-
liament (UKYP) in the House of Commons on 11th
November. Voting takes places both online and
through ballot papers issues in schools and youth
centres.
Ten topics will be available to choose from on the initial Make Your Mark ballot paper, with the five most
popular topics among young people going on to be discussed by MYPs in their November debate, chaired
by the Speaker of the House of Commons Rt. Hon. John Bercow MP and broadcast live on Parliament.
Last year’s Make Your Mark ballot saw 970,000 young people taking part, making it the largest youth con-
sultation of its kind in the UK.
Look out for more information and your ballot paper in Civitas.

MATHS CORNER 1
News from Maths this fortnight
A warm welcome back to Maths Corner for this new academic year. We have lots of new and exciting
talent in Team Maths. Mr Noy, our Key Stage 5 Co-ordinator, is making great plans for an exciting and
fulfilling A-level curriculum. Ms Hill will be maintaining our success with Times Table Rockstars, Mr Iles
will be bringing Maths alive with the Maths Fun club and Mr Simpson our in house IT guru will be help-
ing students access the world of programming. Mr Ali, our new Head of Maths, comes with a wealth of
experience to contribute giving our students the very best outcomes.
The new term has kicked off with Year 7’s being introduced to our Maths Mastery programme where
students experience depth before breadth, Year 8’s are learning the importance and relevance of
prime numbers and prime factor decompositions. Year 9’s are exploring the world of co-ordinate ge-
ometry, Year 10’s are appreciating the challenges of the Index Laws and Year 11’s are getting stuck
into all things Circles.
We have been delighted with the way our students have begun this term and we are looking forward
to seeing some fabulous work.
Hegarty Maths is a new and improved version of the revision website set up by Colin Hegarty (who, this year, was
a finalist in the Global Teacher Prize). His website is designed to support pupils to be independent. Every task
has a video explanation and links to other “building block” tasks to support pupils to be successful. We launched
this with year 11 last year and we’ve been really impressed with their response so far. With the improvements
made to the web site over the summer we have decided that all our students will be set an online piece of home-
work on the Hegarty Maths platform on top of their written homework. We think that this will be a particularly
useful tool for us as it is designed by teachers so all of the feedback we get about the pupils’ work helps us to help
them. Watch this space for password and access details.
All Year 10 pupils should log in to www.hegartymaths.com (using their school, name and date of birth) for weekly
revision and practice. There are useful videos and the opportunity to comment to their teacher as well if they find any task
challenging.
Parent Puzzle 1
How can you get the answer 24 by only using all the
numbers from the following list: 8,8,3,3. You can
use add, subtract, multiply, divide, and use brackets.
Bonus rules: also allowed are logarithms, factorials
and roots.
Email entries with the title “Parent Puzzle 1” to
[email protected]. Correct entries, as
ever, are placed into a termly prize draw to win Maths
equipment for your child – and a treat for you!
TT Rockstars
All our year 7s will be starting our
Times Table Rockstars pro-
gramme. The programme encour-
ages students to become more
efficient with their recall of the
times tables.
Don’t forget that your child can log into www.ttrockstars.com
to do lots of practise and build their rock star status. Our
subscription means that they can also download the app for
their phone or tablet.
Year 11 Booster Session
Worried about your maths GCSE? Feeling overwhelmed and unsure?
Why don’t you come along to our Booster sessions every Thursday 4- 5pm. Ms Garne will be nurtur-
ing the girls and Mr Ali will be motivating the boys. Biscuits provided!
