A Note from the Director

This show is based on the fanciful story of “The Princess And The Pea”.

It deals with (1) finding and discovering the strength within oneself and not let others determine your future. You will also (2) witness a couple who is

concerned that the Prince needs to marry SOON cause no one in the kingdom can wed until he does to solve their particular situation. And (3) see two people who fall in love with someone who feels the same no matter the obstacles or challenges from outside forces. Have you ever been in love and have everyone you know tell you to forget it? Did you follow your heart or listen to them?

So, let us take you back to Medieval times when there were no cell phones, TV, Alexa or internet and just Kings and Queens, Knights and Ladies In Wait-ing, who will take you on a journey while the Minstrel narrates our story. Enjoy,

—Bill Starr, Director

Steve Anthony (King Sextimus) Steve majestically returns to the WVLO boards, albeit with a vow of silence, after triumphantly scooping up the ERMA award portraying Madame Lucy in 2015’s Irene. The pantheon of cult-status roles for WVLO include: the shady peddler, Ali Hakim, in Oklahoma; the self-proclaimed ladies’ man, Adolpho, in The Drowsy Chaperone; the irascible Bud Frump in How To Succeed...; and the refined Doris Miller in Damn Yankees. Other recent memorable roles have been Colonel Pickering in My Fair Lady (WCT), Roscoe Dexter in Singin’ In the Rain (BBB) and Venticelli in Amadeus (Hillbarn). Although his most challenging role is that of kindergarten teacher for the past 25 years, he still dreams of joining the touring company of SHEN YUN as a fan-tan dancer. Shout-outs, though muted, to family, friends, and co-star husband, Tim.

Anatole Babaeff (Sir William) This is not only Anatole’s first appearance with WVLO, but also his first musical theater play, ever! He earned an MS in Electrical Engineering and a BA in Business Administration, but is now retooling himself by taking Acting, Vocal and Musical Theatre classes at ACT in SF. Anatole is passionate about dancing Salsa and playing Flamenco guitar. When not on stage, Anatole is A Software Product Management professional and entrepreneur. He is a proud father of two kids and owner of a dog and a cat.

Alex Barbieri (Sir Michael) Alex is another newcomer to WVLO, after a nine-year hiatus from theater. His last appearance was in The Tavern in 2011 and loved this show so decided to get back on stage. A native of Campbell, Alex has appeared in Bye Bye Birdie as Conrad Birdie; Prince in Cinderella. and Stromboli (his favorite character) in Gepetto & Son. He also directed Annie for the Shoestring Family Theatre. His goal is to continue to be part of the wonderful theater community.

Becky Brownson (Esther) Becky returns to our stage after a three-year absence. Her first appearance was in Good News in 1980. Most recently she was seen on roller skates as Betty Blat in our production of Footloose. Last fall she portrayed Queen Victoria in Tabard Theater’s Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Crown Jewels, but she really doesn’t mind being demoted to a servant in this production. She has fun no matter what role she is in. When not on stage, Becky enjoys the companionship of her husband, Don, and her dog, Snow.

His previous roles include Ensemble for CMT’s Chicago, Sam in Archbishop Mitty’s Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, and Ensemble for Archbishop Mitty’s Bright Star. Luke also studies voice with Sheila Townsend. Luke would like to thank his family and friends for their constant support in his theatrical pursuits.

Dawn Johnson (Lady Rowena/Assistant Stage Manager) Once upon a time, 40 shows ago, Once Upon A Mattress was the second show Dawn performed in with WVLO. Since that time, she has been on stage for fourteen of our productions, has been our Stage Manager for twelve shows, and has worked either backstage or as our light board operator for the rest. She has received our technical award three times, is a past Captain’s Cape winner, and was honored with the Jean Hutchins award in 2013. She has also appeared on stage with SCP, SBMT and ACT. In real life, Dawn oversees the Breast Imaging department at Palo Alto Medical Foundation and works part time as a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines. She dedicates this performance to Stage Manager, Michael MacKenzie, who was her dance partner in that original show, many moons ago.

Molly Meyers (Lady Lucille) Another newcomer to WVLO, Molly is from Santa Cruz where she is currently a freshman at Cabrillo College. Growing up, she performed in many plays and musicals at school and through community programs as well as taking dance lessons in tap, ballet, jazz, lyrical, and contemporary at both Pacific Arts Complex and International Academy of Dance. One of Molly’s first performances was when she was seven years old in a production of Once Upon a Mattress. She looks forward to returning to this wonderful musical and hopes you enjoy the show!

Julie Moylan (Queen Aggravain) Julie is happy to be back on our stage after an all-too-lengthy break (although you may recognize her as the pre-show voice of WVLO). In all, she has appeared in 11 of our productions, including major roles in Into the Woods (Witch), My Fair Lady (Eliza), Man of La Mancha (Aldonza), South Pacific (Nellie) and Fiddler on the Roof (Tzeitel). Most recently, she appeared with our sister organization SBMT in Big River and will be joining them again for the upcoming musical revue The Fabulous Forties. Julie is a graduate of New York University and has received VO training at VoiceTrax in Sausalito. But her favorite role of all is Mom to her two wonderful (adult) kids Bill and Katy (love you to the moon and back!). So grateful for all the family & friends who have been so supportive of my journey. Ancora Imparo.

Makena Murray (Princess #12) Makena fell in love with musical theatre in kindergarten when she landed her break-out role, The Third Pig, and she has loved theatre ever since. Makena’s last WVLO performance was in the toe-tapping extravaganza, 42nd Street, and she is thrilled to be back again working with the amazing cast and crew of Once Upon A Mattress. She has loved every show she’s done for different reasons, but some favorite past roles include Frau Schmidt (Sound Of Music-CMT), The Sour Kangaroo (Seussical – UMS) and Lady Puppet (Avenue

Alycia Olivar (Lady Mabelle) Alycia is excited to be in her first production with WVLO! She has previously traveled all over the Bay for theater and is thrilled to be in a production in her hometown. She is involved with More MÃ’s Marami Arts, which is a budding theater community that seeks to facilitate and cultivate diverse spaces for art in South Bay. She also sometimes plays flute with local Vietnamese band, InnoViát!

Becky Owens (Nightingale of Samarkand) Becky is very happy to return for her second show with WVLO. She’s especially excited to play the Nightingale of Samarkand as it brings her full circle to her very first role in high school. Previous shows include Follies, Act One, You Should Be So Lucky, Ladies Foursome, Anything Goes and Will Rogers Follies. Outside of community theater, Becky is excited to be working with Dinner Detective, a murder mystery company. In addition to acting, she enjoys playing trombone with the SF Bay Jazz Ensemble and the SJ Big Band. In all of her activities, even at her job as a Weight Watchers coach, Becky looks for some way to be singing. This passion led her to compete in and win her division of the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) competition this fall. Pursuing the things she loves takes a lot of time. Becky would like to thank her incredibly supportive husband and sons.

Joanne Rettberg (Mathilde) Joanne is delighted to return to the WVLO stage for the third time and is happy to be once again working with such a professional and friendly organization. She was previously seen at WVLO in The Boyfriend and Footloose. Other credits include SCP’s La Cage Aux Folles, Grand Hotel, Fiddler on the Roof, Sweet Charity, LTSJ’s Brigadoon, WCT’s Guys & Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof and South Pacific, and Hillbarn’s Mame. When Joanne is not on stage, she is a cardiac rehab nurse. She also enjoys cooking, hiking, reading and traveling. She would like to thank all of her family and friends who support her love of theater.

Rachel Rosenberg (Lady Merrill/Lady Beatrice) Rachel is making her debut with WVLO in this production and actually ends her 8-year hiatus from theater. Years ago, she appeared in three shows for SCP and spends her daytime hours with a Start-up Company in SF. Since she was born at Stanford, she expected to be smarter! Her future goal is to stay alive after running a half-marathon the day after closing the show. She sends her love and gratitude to her parents, sister and boyfriend for their constant support.

Tyler Savin (Prince Dauntless) Tyler returns for his seventh show with WVLO, his most recent role was that of Pepper in Mamma Mia. He also appeared in Sister Act as Eddie, as Sir Lancelot in Spamalot and in Smokey Joe’s Cafe. He was the recipient of the ERMA Awards for his leading roles in Footloose and Catch Me If You Can. Other theatrical credits include SCP’s Avenue Q, San Benito Stage Company’s Big River and Oklahoma! And he just finished Little Shop Of Horrors for Pintello Comedy Theater in Gilroy. He hopes his future includes more work in theatre, acting, directing, tech, etc.

Anthony Villanueva (Sir Russell) Anthony makes his debut with WVLO in this production because of the medieval and comic style of the musical and he also wanted to gain more experience in creating different character roles. He has also appeared as Benjamin in Joseph and The Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jekyll & Hyde, The Musical. The highlight of his career thus far was singing the first solo for the Baccalaureate ceremony at Fremont HS Graduation. He is the Activity Leader for the Saratoga Union School District and attended Mission College to receive an Associate of Science in Accounting degree. His future goal is to work on his acting skills and try out the different forms of acting. Even though he says he’s an introvert, he loves the art of theatre.

Jen Wheatonfox (Winnifred) Jen returns for her third show with WVLO, making her debut in Jesus Christ, Superstar and then playing Ellen in Bullets Over Broadway. At the tender age of six, Jen proudly received the local swim team’s “Most Improved Swimmer” award. Today, she hones those hard-won aquatic skills in the swamps and moats of Saratoga, backstroking and butterflying through this third production as Winnifred the Woebegone. Other colorful characters she’s portrayed include Roxie in Chicago (Stage 1 Theatre) Lola in Damn Yankees (FMT) and most recently, Fraulein Kost in Cabaret at SCP. She is so happy to play with new as well as familiar friends in this show and thanks her fiance and best friend, Steve, for all his unending love and support.

Jennifer Willis (Lady Elizabeth) Jennifer is back for her fourth production with WVLO, most recently seen as a Follies Girl in Will Rogers Follies last season. She also appeared in 42nd Street and Spamalot. She’s been dancing since she was three, trained with Dance Theatre International, and got her BA in Dance at SJSU in 2016. She teaches ballet, tap and jazz to young inspiring dancers here in the Bay Area and has danced many different soloist roles in the Nutcracker, such as The Ballerina Doll, Spanish Cocoa, Marzipan Shepherdess and the Snow Queen.
