Spirit is growing at Esko School. In October, the cheer squad held an elementary cheer clinic for the future cheerleaders of Esko High School. Fifty-six young girls attended and blew the roof off of the cafeteria prac-ticing cheers and showing their school spirit. The participants were then able to cheer at a football game which was fun for the crowd and the cheerleaders too.

Welcome

Diana Munter started working in Cool Kids in September. She has en-joyed getting to know the students and engaging in their play.

Diana graduated from Goshen High School in Goshen, IN. She received her degree in elementary education from Bethel College. She retired from teaching in June of 2013. Diana is married to Ken who is a 1975 Esko graduate and together they have three children; Michael, Ciro, and Erika.

Diana and Ken just moved to Esko from Indiana and they are currently looking for a house in Esko or Clo-quet.

In her free time, she enjoys reading books (nonfiction), magazines, and spending time with family. Her favor-ite kind of food is Mexican and she loves all the shades of blue.

One thing not many people know about Diana is that she is Hispanic and bilingual speaking Spanish. Stop by and say hello or hola to Diana soon. She is a great addition to our Cool Kids staff!

kids Plus is in full swing for the 2017-18 school year! These dedi-cated students have committed them-selves to becom-ing leaders and to making a positive impact in their local and global commu-nity.

So far this semes-ter, this group of 6th graders have worked to discover their own lead-ership styles, and have elected of-ficers based on their strengths and character. They have lent a hand at the school by harvesting the garden, and were able to bring nearly 30 pounds of produce to the kitchen. These students have also decided on 4 local and 1 global cause to pursue

this school year. These causes are: hunger, illiteracy, distracted driving, cyber bullying and global water short-ages.

Throughout the school year, Kids Plus will take on various fundrais-ers, drives, vol-unteer work, and

events to help raise awareness and to support the causes they feel pas-sionate about. We have begun the year with WE Scare Hunger, a drive to collect food and money dona-tions to fight hunger in our area.

Thank you to Esko for supporting Kids Plus so far. We look forward to working with our community to make Esko area the best it can be.

Cassie Apostolou has worked in Cool Kids since the end of September. She has enjoyed get-ting to know the kids and find-ing out about all of their hobbies and personalities. Cassie gradu-ated from Osseo High School and went on to UW Stevens Point to get her degree in Wildlife Ecol-ogy- Research and Management and minored in Biology.

Cassie is excited to be planning her wedding to an Esko native for June of 2018. She is currently living in Cloquet. She has lots of hobbies and loves to spend time hunting, golfing, and attending country concerts or building lego sets.

Her favorite color is blue and her favorite food is dill pickle soup- WOW! Despite the fact that Cassie doesn’t usually watch TV, not many people know, she is a fan of Dancing With The Stars and Survivor.

Andrea king has been a sub-stitute in Cool Kids for four years and has joined our team this year. She has also subbed in the school and the lunchroom. She loves Cool Kids because there is never a dull moment working with the kids. They can say the funniest things. She also loves all of her coworkers in the program!

Andrea is a 2000 Esko gradu-ate and still lives in Esko with her husband Jon and her silly boy, Alex. She loves spending time with her family especially camp-ing, fishing, 4-wheeling, and go-ing to concerts. Her favorite color is pink and she loves to eat tacos. One strange fact about Andrea that not many people know is that she loves owls!

We are thrilled to have Andrea as a part of the Cool Kids staff. Make sure to welcome her the next time you see her after school.

layla McDonald is brand new to Cool Kids. She is excited to find out what her favorite part of the program will be. She is hap-py to be working at Esko. Layla hopes to one day become an el-ementary teacher and has com-pleted some classes at UWS.

Layla is a 2013 graduate of Duluth Denfeld and has recently moved to Cloquet and lives with her two sons, Levi who is 3 and Dax who is 9 months old.

She loves to play with her kids, go shopping, 4-wheeling, hunt-ing and fishing with her family. She loves spaghetti and meatballs and her favorite color is pink. One thing not many people know about her is that her first pet was a pot belly pig!

Early Childhood Screening

Early Childhood Screening is a one time, free, quick and simple check of child health and devel-opment for all children ages 3-5 years old. Standardized assess-ments are utilized to identify the child’s strengths and skills. Each child is screened with assessments according to their specific age. The screening also identifies more subtle concerns, which may need a more comprehensive evaluation. The purpose of screening is to iden-tify concerns early and link families to further evaluation if needed. We often tell parents that screening is a snapshot, and if necessary, a more in-depth evaluation would give us a broader picture of their child’s de-velopment. Although Early Child-hood Screening is required by the State of Minnesota for all 3-5 year olds before kindergarten, it is ideal to complete the screening at age 3. The reason is, if further evalua-tion is needed, these interventions are most effective if done early. In fact, the earlier the better! Success-ful completion and follow-through

of Early Childhood Screening has been proven to better prepare chil-dren for kindergarten.

The areas of development as-sessed during the hour long screen-ing process are: Fine and gross motor –

How children move their bodies and use their handsCommunication and language –

How children understand and communicate with othersCognitive –

How children explore, learn, think and figure out how to solve problemsSocial and emotional –

How children feel, behave and re-late to others Health –

Vision and hearing screening, health history and immunization re-view

If your child is enrolled in Esko School Readiness, their Early Childhood screening will take place during class time. It is required by

the State of Minnesota that all Chil-dren who are enrolled in School Readiness have their Early Child-hood screening within six weeks of starting school. For all other 3-5 year olds, Esko’s Fall Early Child-hood Screening will take place on November 10 at the Esko Apostolic Lutheran Church basement. If you do not receive a letter in the mail inviting your child to screening by October 15, please call Jill Liupak-ka at 879-4038. Also please call if you have any questions. In addition, we have a spring screening date which will be in April.

Our Early Childhood staff strives to make the screening experience enjoyable and informative for chil-dren and families. It is important to reassure your child that screening is fun; in fact, we often call the assess-ments “games” which help us know how they are learning and growing.

esko High School Parent-teacher Conferences

The end of the first marking period at Esko High School is Friday, November 3, 2017. Fol-lowing this date is the first round of parent-teacher conferences, scheduled for Thursday, Novem-ber 16. Conferences will be held in teacher classrooms from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. Student assistants will be on campus guide parents from room to room.

Typically, parents move from teacher to teacher for a 5 min-ute check in about their student’s progress. For issues that require more than 5 minutes to discuss, parents are encouraged to set up a meeting with an individual teacher or group of teachers for another date and time.

Many parents appreciate and uti-lize Canvas and the EHS Campus Parent Portal to monitor student grades throughout the quarter, but this service is not designed to re-place the important face-to-face communication that parent-teach-er conferences offer. Conferences are essential for maximizing stu-dent success through parent-teach-er collaboration. We look forward to seeing you there.

Report cards are available for parent pick up at conferences. Stu-dents may pick up paper copies of report cards beginning on Friday morning, November 17. 1st mark-ing period grades will be posted for electronic view on the EHS Parent Portal by Tuesday morn-ing November 14. Paper copies of report cards are not mailed, un-less by special request to the high school office.

School Climate and Bullying Prohibition

Esko High School is known for its positive and safe learning en-vironment, but students do expe-rience a normal level of peer con-flicts for adolescents and young adults. Adults who work in our school take seriously the duty of supporting students in working through and learning from diffi-cult interactions with friends and classmates and in stopping un-acceptable behaviors. To assist students and staff in handling in-cidents that rise to the level of bul-lying, the Esko School District and Esko High School follow a policy that matches the requirement of the 2014 Minnesota Safe and Sup-portive Schools Act. That policy is included for your information below:

esko Public Schools Policy 514, meets the requirements of the Minnesota Safe and Supportive Schools Act. It expressly prohib-its bullying, and outlines the defi-nitions, procedures and regula-tions for bullying prevention and intervention.

Bullying is intimidating, threat-ening, abusive, or harming con-duct that is objectively offensive. It involves an actual or perceived imbalance of power between the student engaging in the conduct and the target of the behavior, and the conduct is repeated over time. The conduct materially and substantially interferes with the student educational opportuni-ties or performance or ability to participate in school functions or activities. Not all negative interac-tion between or amongst students constitutes bullying.

the Science of Spin is Coming to Winterquist!on wednesday, November 15th, “DAZZliNg DAVe”

Schulte, National Yo-Yo Master, will present two programs.

The first program will be on yo-yo’s, a demonstration performance and safety when yo-yoing. Yo-yo-ing develops hand-eye coordina-tion, builds self-esteem, enhances motor skills and teaches the ben-efits of practice. It is also a lot of

fun! The second program is for stu-dents in Grades 4-6 call the “Sci-ence of Spin.” Dave teaches science through the use of toys and sport-ing equipment. This helps children understand how physics plays a part of their everyday life.

As part of his program Dave will teach the sport of yo-yo in the el-ementary PE classes on November 16th and 17th.. Yo-yos will be pro-vided for PE classes, so buying a yo-yo is not mandatory. Yo-yos and equipment will be available to buy.

A flyer will go home the week of November 13th.
