The Panama Hat is the finest straw hat in the world. Hand woven in Ecuador from toquilla straw, they are wearable works of art.
True to the artisanal tradition, these hats continue to be woven by hand in different grades with the top grade of hat taking 3 months to make. Thickness of the straw, tightness of weave and, of course, the skill of the weaver determines the grade and hence the price of the finished product.
The Ecuadorian towns of Montecristi and Cuenca are where most Panama hats are made. They are created by crafts people whose skills have been refined and handed down for generations. Making the hats is, for the people of these two towns, a calling and a way of life as well as a job.
During the construction of the Panama Canal, workers, officials and visitors wore the hats. By the time the Panama Canal was officially opened in 1914, the toquilla hats from Ecuador were a fashion icon and were known by all as “Panama hats.”
