Officer Coyne provided an update on current police activity: burglary of a shed on Briar Point Rd, destruction of property, thefts from motor vehicles and pizza delivery guy held up on Crisfield. There is a huge spike in the theft of autos in Essex mainly because keys were in the ignition as the cars were warming up (that is now a ticketed offense and insurance may not pay). Officer Coyne addressed ques-tions and concerns from the audience.

Heather Hooper, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, provid-ed interesting facts about the bay and its health. Based on key markers of its health, it has slowly been improv-ing from the low 20’s when the scoring began up to a current score of 30. We are striving for a 70. Of all ele-ments that are negative markers for a healthy bay, the one that is still going up is phosphorous. How can we affect this without harming farmers? There is currently a promising bill in the House to address this. Crabs and fish are still slightly down. The amount of dissolved oxy-gen and nitrogen have decreased and water clarity is up partially due to aquatic grasses which have increased 22%. Visit www.cbf.org for more info.

The treasurer’s report and previous meeting’s minutes were addressed.

John Schmidt read through four proposed zoning changes. One raising concern for many neighbors regards a parking variance for a residence on Nollmeyer Rd. which, according to current zoning can be an assisted living facility.

Rich reported on the Bull and Oyster Roast.

Mimi Rehbein reported on Just BQuz– One of the group’s initiatives is to support veterans and so after visit-ing the Perry Point Veterans facility it was decided that one pleasure that the patients would really appreciate would be free coffee. Deliveries will be made at least four times/year, along with visits. If you happen to see a can of drip grind coffee on sale, think about donating it to the cause! All are welcome to take part in the visits. Just BQuz has also planned a water wise education day and cardboard boat race . See below. A bowl painting event has been scheduled for April 29th at 7:00. Bowl, paint, materi-als and instructor for $15 and you will walk away with a beautiful hand painted sunflower bowl. BYOB and snacks. Forty slots are available. Contact Deb at [email protected] to register. The cost is $15, to be paid at the door.

Mike Vivirito reported on the illegal activities at the BP gas station and the fines that were in-curred by the owner. A hearing was scheduled for March 9.

The Power Plant (CP Crane/Raven Energy) was sold again. We will have a speaker at our June meeting.

Rich Pitz reported on the key issues from the Essex Middle River Civic Council– Can’t get any response from owners of The Depot or Walmart regarding development plans; concerns for the deteriorating railroad bridges and cement falling on roadways; residential spot zoning; Paragon outlet mall battle; etc. UPDATE: We have recently been informed that the second floor of one of The Depot buildings has been leased for 5 years to a Virginia Company to house an indoor Go Cart track.

John Heinz BQVFD Chief– Provided information on BQVFD efforts. Calls have been on the increase. The largest number of calls are EMS. John spoke about the number of waterway accidents and deaths and the need to wear personal flotation devices while underway. Safe Boaters Courses will be offered again this Spring as well as CPR training. They have scheduled a Boating Safety Day on Saturday May 14. Check out www.bqvolunteers.org. for more info.

The Dorn family on Bay Drive won the drawing for 2 free Bull and Oyster Roast tickets. Congratulations!!

It is with great sad-ness that we report the passing of Skip Danner. He was a kind and caring community member and family man. He served on the BQIA board for several years and could be seen each Mother’s Day helping at the coffee and juice ta-ble. Our condolenc-es to his wife Marie and their family.
