With the approval and implementation of medical marijuana prescription sales in Maryland, dispensaries are setting up throughout the state. One of the new dispensaries will be opening on Carroll Island Rd. AFS Maryland’s Andrew Reich, Regional Sales Manager and Dr. Marilyn Corder, Clinical Di-rector, will give us an update at our April 12th meeting and an-swer questions about this retail medical operation opening soon.

Dave Hash introduced Les Richardson from Richardson’s Farm. Les is the ac-countant and general manager of the Farm. In the 1930’s that was the first market on Ebenezer Rd. The current structure was built by Amish workers. June 10,1994 was the last day they gathered eggs and 2004 the last day for their own processed chickens. They got out of the chicken business because of the increased USDA regulations and now sell chicken from Perdue. They do weddings at their farm on Glen Arm Rd. The reason they come down here to farm is mostly kale and other greens, shipped by tractor trailer up and down the eastern US. It is warmer here. Spring is earlier and winter is almost a month later from here to Glen Arm. Kale needs to be rotated so it will move from field to field. They also grow a lot of tomatoes and corn. The plastic cover placed on the beds reduces disease from the ground, holds the heat and water, and controls the weeds. They rely on the H2A program, seasonal people from Honduras for labor.

Business Meeting

• The minutes and treasurers report were read and approved.

• There is a new Essex Precinct Commander that we hope will speak at an up-coming meeting.

• A warehouse is planned to be built at the back of the lot between AirTech and the beauty salon The lot is owned by AirTech.

• The board room is being redecorated to be more amenable to use as a wedding prepa-ration room since the hall is being used more for this purpose. Joann Hock contribut-ed framed local photos and mirrors. Fred and Gerri Hylla purchased and donated new chairs and located a new table. Thank you!

• The gazebo is planned for the Spring.

• Siding and roof repairs are needed

• Just BQuz– Almost $250 in school supplies were donated to Seneca ES. Many of these supplies were donated by the party goers at the Just Chillin’ in BQ Party. BTW that party was such a fun time we will be doing it again next year. Speaking of repeats the Italian Dinner is coming back, scheduled for October 20. A Mad Hatter Tea Party is May 20th and April 19th is the next Coffee for Vets visit. As of tonight 34 en-graved bricks have been purchased for the front walkway. An impromptu Paint a Slate event is March 11.

• EMRCC– The Blue Ocean deal for The Depot is still not off the table..we’ll see. Walmart wants to expand at the current site. David Cordish will be sending reps to the EMRCC Round Table to discuss the expan-sion. La Farge is mostly making $ on tipping fees now. Developers are sending their excavation dirt to fill in the holes in the sand pits. The site is 400 plus acres. Thoughts of it being developed as an open space??? We are still waiting for that combined rescue/fire station to find an agreed upon site in the area.

• Don’t forget Dumpster Day May 5, our annual Mother’s Day Breakfast May 13, and our 80th Anniversary Party on June 9.

• A member brought up a zoning concern with Bay Country Concrete. The property is zoned BL– Building Light (office). That zoning does not allow any construction equipment to be stored on site. The county is addressing this issue with the property owner.

• April 5th, BQVFD will start Food Truck Thurs-days from 5-8 pm. Twelve trucks will set up with various foods to choose from, including a raw bar. The BQVFD hall will be open if you want to eat there. Sounds Yummy!

• 50/50 And the winner is Tom Cole! Thank you for your donation Tom..Terrific!

Dumpster Day- Neighborhood and Property Cleanup, May 5, 7-11 AM, Dumpsters will be available at the BQIA Hall for household and property trash. The following are PROHIBITED ITEMS: Explosive or Flammable materials; Acids, caustics, pesti-cides, chemicals; Refrigerators / Air Condi-tioners /Freezers which contain freon; Tires; Oil, Paint and household hazardous chemi-cals; Medical / radioactive waste; Liquids or Liquid waste, antifreeze; Drums or Tanks (unless clean and cut in half); Batteries; As-bestos Shingles or any other asbestos materi-al; Animal carcasses; Large stumps; Wood not more than 8″ in diameter and 6′ in length; Most large items that cannot be lifted manually; Electronics (Computer equipment, Televisions, Telephones, Stereos, Fax machines, Video display devices)
