letter from the Dear Friends,

Our 2010-2011 fiscal year was a positive and successful time for Boys & Girls Aid. Throughout the last three years, the slow economy provided us with challenges. But we used the sometimes difficult circumstances as an opportunity to review our programs and processes. During this time, we always held true to our core purpose of impacting the lives of children in need. And with the completion of the fiscal year, we can say, with enthusiasm, that our services for children and young adults are growing and continually improving at Boys & Girls Aid.

As the stories in the following pages reflect, we are creating an impact in our community through adoption, shelter services and foster care. But we are also there to give the children we serve advantages in life that they have never experienced. As part of Boys & Girls Aid’s long-term strategic plan, we support children and young people on their path to a stable, safe and successful life with permanent connections to loving and caring adults. We look forward to sharing this permanency plan with you as it continues to evolve.

We are grateful for the investment you have made that allow us to be recognized as a leader in providing the highest quality service and support to Oregon’s children. Your continued investment in the lives of young people will lead to the future success of our community.

Warmest regards,

Michael H. Balter Executive Director

Carey has always wanted what is best for herself and her siblings - two parents they can trust and rely upon. And this year that simple wish is coming true.

Carey has shouldered the weighty responsibility of caring for herself and her three brothers throughout most of her 15 years. After several reports of child neglect and abuse, the Department of Human Services (DHS) permanently removed the children from their home. The DHS caseworker recognized that it was crucial to keep the siblings together because of the support they had for each other. The caseworker knew Boys & Girls Aid could

help find a loving adoptive home for Carey, Tyler, Jeff, and Nick.

Boys & Girls Aid created and employed all methods of recruitment for these children. You could find their story in every media avenue available. After a nine-month search, a loving family was identified as the best fit for this special sibling group. Karen, a special education teacher, and James, a fireman, were selected and their family instantly grew by four. The family is bonding, and while they have had their challenges, the children are thriving. Carey is enjoying just being

a teenager and pursuing her love of the arts. Tyler, an outdoorsy boy, is exploring his new surroundings. Jeff is excited to have a Mom in the bleachers at his games. And Nick, the youngest of the four, is thrilled to have a Dad to teach him how to play football!

Delmar and Marisol Garcia always knew they wanted to expand their family. But after Marisol’s difficult pregnancies with their first two children, they knew adoption was the best way to add to their family. They had more love to give and felt that children can come to families in many different ways. Adoption was just another way.

Vanessa, a birth mother working with Boys & Girls Aid, had chosen an adoption plan for her unborn son. At their first match meeting, Vanessa shared that she wanted her child to have a stable life with parents who had the time to give him everything he needed. She also wanted the baby to have strong extended family bonds. She felt that Delmar and Marisol were the family that could provide this to her baby.

“Words cannot express the love we have for Vanessa. She gave us a perfect gift. She trusted us to take care of her beautiful baby. We feel honored to know her and will do our very best to provide our new son Antonio the life she would want him to have.” Delmar, Marisol, baby Antonio and Vanessa have continued their relationship and enjoy seeing each other a few times a year.

“Words cannot express the love we have for Vanessa. She gave us a perfect gift.” —Garcia Family

Danielle was 16-years-old when she came to Boys & Girls Aid’s Shelter, Transition, and Evaluation Program (STEP) after being removed from her grandmother's home. She had been placed with her grandmother because of her mother's drug abuse. This living situation was intended to be her long-term foster care placement. However, a relative was abusing Danielle. When this was discovered she was removed from the home and transferred to STEP.

Once at STEP, Danielle began individual therapy to address her past trauma and engaged in group skill-building. She learned useful coping skills that helped her process her past and deal with her current struggles. Danielle was a motivated student, catching up on her high school credits. She became a leader and positive influence to her peers at STEP, offering support to others and encouraging them to work toward their goals.

Danielle's case managers found an independent living program in the Salem area, where Danielle had more natural supports, which seemed to be the right fit for her. She was accepted into the program, and at the end of her 90 days at STEP was able to successfully transition to the new program. Danielle is doing very well, and is happy to be in a permanent living situation. She is putting the skills she learned at STEP to use and is developing meaningful relationships.

“I learned skills in STEP that have helped me process my past and move forward with my future.” — Danielle, age 16

I drove up from California with my dog because I got kicked out of my house. My step-father and I never got along. I slept in my car for two nights and didn't have any place to stay. Then someone told me about the Safe Place shelter, and I headed over there right away. After talking with the staff at Safe Place, they thought the Transitional Living Program would be good for me.

I like TLP’s staff. They are helpful, but they expect a lot of you. It is sometimes overwhelming and a little stressful, but I have learned a lot of life skills there.

I also like the program. It teaches you how to be an adult and to be more responsible. I think it's good that I'm learning how to do a budget, because I worry about money. I am grateful that the program gave me structure to study and work toward my GED.

My goals are to get my GED and get into a college. Someday I would like to have a good job in the medical field.

“I am learning how to do a budget and be a more responsible adult.” —Fernando, age 19
