For example:

• Member of the Year • Rookie of the Year • Sponsor/Supporter of the Year. • Member Generator • Media Award • Humanitarian Award

q Set your deadlines - Schedule your calendar backwards to insure a realistic and

flexible time table

• Determine the date the awards will be given. • Order the plaques and awards and find out how long it takes to engrave. • Set voting deadline at least three days before the engraver needs the

information. • Send ballots to membership. Deadline is no longer than one week. • Send nomination forms to membership. Deadline is no longer than one

(Continued-2)

THE AWARDS PROGRAM q Provide a written program and an agenda for attendees. q Build the intensity and anticipation for each award. Give the criteria for each award

and introduce the nominees. q Give each recipient a maximum of 2 minutes for an acceptance speech, q Save the best for last - President's Award, Member of the Year, Food Service

Professional of the Year, whichever has the most me your branch.

PUBLICITY

q Include pictures and brief descriptions of Branch Award recipients in monthly mailer. Everyone loves to see their picture when they receive recognition.

PUBLICITY TO THE COMMUNITY q Send press releases about award recipients to:

• Local foodservice trade publication(s) or periodicals(s). • Business Section of your local newspaper. • Food Section of your local newspapers. • Local newspapers specializing in local and regional business

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

• Provide some awards that require votes from membership. Best location, Best

speaker, Foodservice Professional of the Year, Champion Backer of the Year. Don't forget to invite them to the Awards Banquet - it gives them publicity too!

• Omit "Supplier of the Year" as an award. The connotation of supplier generally

reflects the large distributors and companies. Many times the most deserving company is small and may not fit the image of "supplier". Consider "supporter", "sponsor", or "backer", instead.

TRADE SECRETS

CRITERIA FOR BRANCH AWARDS • Save time and money with IFSEA Sponsor Spike Lawrence. Call Gary Imhoff at

1-800-429-2734 for the entire line of affordable IFSEA approved plaques and awards.

• Create at least one award that Board of Directors are not eligible. Board nominates

and votes for the winner. Consider Member of the Year in this category. • Be mindful of the number of awards going to Board of Directors. Try to give more

awards to members, especially new members. Your Board of Directors deserve recognition for their efforts and your members NEED MORE to stay involved.

THE AWARDS PROGRAM • KEEP IT MOVING! There is nothing worse than trying to emulate the Academy

Awards by dragging the ceremony down with lengthy acceptance speeches and bad jokes.

INTERNATIONAL MEMBERSHIP

AWARDS

PREPARATION Whip up nominations to honor the "cream of the crop" of your Branch, from your Board of Directors and the most active members. They have all received recognition at the Branch level more than once. Take it one step higher. International Awards recognize members that have made significant contribution(s) for the success of International and Branch programs and objectives. The first step of the International Awards ladder is Certificate of Merit. Every Branch usually has two or three Board members that qualify for this award. You can never do enough for Board members that consistently go above and beyond the call of duty. Plus, it gives you a chance to strut your stuff! Many Branch leaders also get involved at the International level. A Branch can also nominate their members for the Distinguished Service Citation and higher awards. These are all based on outstanding activity and involvement at the International level.

EXECUTIVE DECISIONS • Branch Executive Committee is the nomination committee for International

Awards. • Review most recent International Awards criteria. Set timely deadlines to

gather appropriate information and • complete awards application.

qualify for Certificate of Merit and possibly the Dignified Service Citation. q Assemble the parts. Copy the application(s) provided. (If Official Nomination

Form is missing, call HQ at 561-998-7758 for another copy.) Take all the required information and compile them into an attractive, organized booklet.

q Type or clearly print applications and narratives. q Find non-elected members to write well-written letters of recommendation as

required. q Set timely deadlines. Begin application process at least six weeks before the

required submission date. It is too stressful to try to put nominations together one week before the conference. Your nominations reflect the time you spent.

q Make copies of each award. Accidents do happen, so be prepared with a back-up. q Check deadlines for each award nomination and application. q Branch President submits all nominations and applications unless otherwise stated

for each award. If nomination is for Branch President, it is to be submitted by the Branch immediate Past President, President-Elect / Vice-President or a Board Member.
