    Week of March 21, 2011

The Williams School works with each child to build and enduring

foundation for academic, moral and social success. A Williams School

student embodies integrity, confidence and a love of learning.

    Dear Williams School Families,

During our assembly on Wednesday we had some wonderful presentations from the second and thirdgrade students. The second grade students all spoke so clearly with big audience voices about allthe neat things they had been studying over the last couple of weeks. It was a very impressive list! The third graders presented the beautifully designed t-shirts they had made that illustrated theendangered animal each student had studied. In all honesty, those t-shirts could sell in any store inno time flat. Again, very impressive!

But it was a fifteen second period that was the centerpiece of the assembly. Usually when we do our"think about" time we share a story or poem that somehow exemplifies the golden rule. This week we

took a moment to discuss the recent and on-going tragedy that is developing in Japan.

There was a picture of Japan and where it is located in the world and another picture of where theearthquake and tsunami took place. We talked about how a tsunami is also called a tidal wave andhow an earthquake can cause the waves in the ocean to become much bigger than normal. After theshort science lesson, we drew our attention to the title of the slide-- it said, "A [Kanji symbol for]prayer for Japan." The next slide showed the seven heavenly virtues in both Kanji symbols andEnglish equivalents. Thinking about the ongoing disaster, and looking at the seven heavenly virtues, the students were asked to pray, meditate, or just think about the people of Japan during this difficulttime.

And then we bowed our heads and took a moment in silence. The silence filled the room with hopeand goodwill. It took but only fifteen or thirty seconds and there was not a stir in the room. Not onechild or adult could be heard, but we all felt the presence of something greater than ourselves--faith,hope, charity, fortitude, justice, temperance, and prudence.

The assembly ended with two more examples of our student population helping to make our smallworld a better place to be. The eighth grade class officers easily drew five names that had beensubmitted (from a rapidly filling sweet pickle jar) by others who were touched by or witnessed a gooddeed. The junior Girl Scout troop then presented the school with numerous handmade "DraftStoppers" for a few of our classrooms that had older, draftier, windows. It was a wonderful servicelearning project where they defined a need and created a solution.

After the school song and dismissal, one couldn't help but feel that at The Williams School, we arestriving to be a positive force for good. We certainly learn our lessons in our classrooms, but whenwe gather together and celebrate the good and hope for a better world, a whole different kind oflearning and growing takes place. School work becomes soul work.
