    Victorias paramedics are highly skilled professionals who dedicate their lives to serving the community and helping out in tough times.

    Ambulance Victoria and Victorian Government representatives have been negotiating with the ambulance union over a new pay deal for paramedics since August 2012.

    To break the deadlock, the Victorian Government has agreed with Ambulance Victoria to make a new pay offer to paramedics.

    This new offer is fair and reasonable. It includes:

    a sign-on payment of $3000 for full-time paramedics (pro rata for part-timers and new employees) this is twice as much as the previous offer

    an immediate 6% wage increase

    an increase of 3% in July 2015 and a further 3% in July 2016 a 12% increase in total.

    Paramedics may also receive pay increases arising from the Fair Work Commissions arbitration of their work value claim.

    Paramedics existing terms and conditions will be retained, so that they continue to receive:

    10 weeks paid leave annually

    10 weeks paid parental leave

    6 months long service leave after 15 years service

    tax exempt benefits of up to $9000 a year.

    Victorian paramedics will still be the only paramedics in Australia to have access to guaranteed superannuation benefits via a defined benefit superannuation scheme, including a lump-sum option after 30 years of service.

    These increases will mean an ALS Year 6 paramedic can receive a total package of more than $110,000 a year (including rolled-in-rate, built-in overtime, FBT exempt benefits and guaranteed superannuation benefits but not additional overtime). In addition, paramedics will receive the $3,000 sign-on payment.

    The Victorian Government is continuing to invest in ambulance services, with funding provided for an additional 539 full-time equivalent ambulance officers.

    This new pay offer gives paramedics the salary increase they deserve, maintains the generous terms and conditions they enjoy today and recognises the importance of the job they do protecting and saving lives.

    Watergardens Hotel in Taylors Lakes have generously donated $20,000 in perpetuity to the Brimbank Community Fund (BCF). On behalf of the Directors of Watergardens Hotel, Alexander Robertson OAM, who presented Council with the donation said this would be an ongoing contribution. This commitment to the fund will help deliver important projects aimed at enhancing the most disadvantaged and vulnerable in our community.

    The BCF has been set up by Council to deliver ongoing positive outcomes for the local community. This year the funds focus is to support initiatives which address school non-attendance in Brimbank.

    The fund is managed locally through a Committee of Council and includes community representatives such as local leaders whose enthusiasm, skills and knowledge ensure the fund is relevant to Brimbank.

    The Brimbank Community Fund seeks ongoing donations from individuals or businesses to invest in Brimbanks future; specifi cally in the areas of education, health, the arts, sport and community strengthening activities.

    Temporary relocation of Sunshine Library and Customer Service Centre

    In August the Sunshine Library and Customer Service Centre will temporarily relocate to make way for works on the $52 million Community and Civic Centre.

    Customer Service Centre

    Located on Hampshire Road will close on Friday 1 August at 12 noon.

    From Monday 4 August the Service Centre will operate out of the Sunshine Municipal Offi ces, 6-18 Alexandra Avenue, opening at the usual time of 8.45am.

    The Library located on Hampshire Road will close at 5pm on Sunday 3 August.

    The library will reopen on Monday 11 August at 10am in McCracken Street, Sunshine.

    The future of a high school located on the former Mowbray College site looks brighter with the owner revealing he has appointed the schools principal.

    Intaj Khan, a Wyndham businessman and councillor, bought the Caroline Springs site in 2012 for $6.7 million and announced earlier this year that West Lakes Grammar School would open for year 7 and 8 students in February next year.

    Last week, Mr Khan told Star Weekly that Robert Dullard would lead the non- denominational private school, and enrolments were being received.

    The school is budgeting for an initial total enrolment of 120 students.

    Mr Khan, who knocked back offers from developers and the chance to make almost $4 million on the site, said Mr Dullard came to the school with a wealth of experience.

    Educational consultant and La Trobe University professor David Warner, who has worked closely with Mr Khan to develop the school, said the appointment was a coup.

    Weve gained a principal in touch with 21st century learning, Mr Warner said. Were very confident we have the right person for the job and that our young people will get the most out of the opportunities given.

    Mr Dullard has 27 years experience in education and has been a deputy principal for the past 14 years, most recently at Penola Catholic College in Glenroy. In a statement to

    prospective families of West Lakes Grammar School, he said he was excited about being appointed. It will be a positive, vibrant and progressive educational landscape.

    My vision for West Lakes Grammar School and the families of Caroline Springs and neighbouring suburbs is to create a learning community where all members have a true passion for lifelong learning.

    Springs school gets principal

    It might not look like much, but these little plastic bags are making child birth that bit easier and safer. Brimbank Central Rotary Club spent part of its meeting last week making 200 birthing kits that will be shipped to Pampanga in the Philippines to help provide safer birthing for women without access to hospitals. The kits include a sheet of plastic, rubber gloves, gauze, a scalpel and even a string tie for the umbilical cord. This is the fifth year Brimbank Central Rotary has sent the birthing kits.     Five former schools across Brimbank are to be sold as the state government offloads surplus properties.

    Keilor Park Primary School, Calder Rise Primary School, Deer Park Primary School, Kealba Secondary College and land in McCubbin Drive, Taylors Lakes, are being prepared for sale by the Department of Treasury and Finance.

    According to the Treasury website, each site will be assessed for market readiness, which may include rezoning and remediation, before it is put on the market.

    The process could take several years.The state Treasury Department offered

    to sell the sites to Brimbank council earlier this year, but administrators voted against the purchase.

    The former school sites were also offered for sale to other state and federal government departments and agencies.

    City development director Stuart Menzies said the council decided that none of the sites was required for future open space or as locations for future community facilities.

    Many of the sites are close to existing council parks and open spaces that have been, or are planned to be, improved by council in accordance with its Creating Better Parks Strategy, Mr Menzies said.

    The sites are just a few of the dozens of former schools, police stations, government depots and hospitals the state government is selling.

    A Sunshine West business owner is worried his factory may be acquired to make way for the East West Link after initial maps detailing the western route were removed from state government websites.

    General Laser director Andrew Miles was involved in government consultation when the project was first announced and was made to understand that the preferred route for the western section would use up vacant land adjoining his factory and miss his laser cutting

    business by more than 19 metres. A Linking Melbourne property map dated October 2010 and seen by Star Weekly confirms this.

    Mr Miles said these same plans were put up online but had been removed in recent months, causing him and surrounding business owners to wonder if the route will be altered.

    He said that since October 2010 he had spent nearly $1 million to extend the factory and buy new equipment. Based on what the Linking Melbourne Authority told us, many businesses in the area have invested money and expanded, but now the links have disappeared.

    If Id known there was potential for a freeway [through my factory], I wouldve held onto my money and looked elsewhere. The freeway has to go somewhere if we have to move, we have to move but they need to let us know.

    The state government last week opened the tender process for the western section, which will include a new tollway road linking the eastern section at CityLink through to the Western Ring Road. State Transport Minister Terry Mulder would not confirm how many homes and businesses, if any, will be acquired for the western section of the East West Link
