    Brimbank police are imploring people to remove valuables from their unattended cars and stop the day in, day out car break-ins that are happening across the city.

    Last Wednesday, the Star Weekly and Brimbank police officers visited the Watergardens railway station in Sydenham to see how many cars had valuable items on view inside.

    In more than a third of about 350 cars there were items of value in sight in the vehicle interiors. Items most commonly spotted were sunglasses, loose change, garage remote controls, bills and GPS systems.

    Sergeant Craig McSwain, who leads Brimbank polices vehicle crime reduction team, said it was a heavily targeted area.

    People leave their cars here all day to catch the train or shop and were being called out here several times a week, he said.

    There are 682 car parking spots at the train station, and Watergardens Town Centre has more than 4700.

    According to Senior Sergeant Shannon Symons, even AUX cords and GPS windscreen suction cups should be removed from view as they can indicate a device may be hidden away in the glove box or console.

    Other targeted items include mobile phones, wallets, handbags, laptops and keys.

    Although crime statistics for the 2013-14 financial year for Brimbank show a 6.3 per cent drop in thefts from cars compared with the previous year (from 2429 to 2275 offences), the figures are still unnecessarily high, police say.

    decides then to break in, Sergeant McSwain said.

    His caution comes after a 34-year-old Delahey man was arrested on September 23 for a series of thefts from cars across Delahey and Sydenham.

    The man had been trawling the suburbs at night and breaking into cars, managing to use several credit cards he obtained in the thefts, Senior Sergeant Symons said.

    The man is on remand to appear at Sunshine Magistrates Court on October 27.

    Senior Sergeant Symons said police had arrested a Melton man in his mid-30s in the Watergardens station car park after catching him with several stolen number plates.

    Sergeant McSwain is exploring a long-term program to combat number plate theft. He said vehicle owners could ring Sunshine police station on 9313 3333 to obtain one-way screws.

    A 41-year-old Hillside man was one of two men arrested and charged after a drug operation uncovered 30 kilograms of ice with a street value of $20 million.

    After executing a number of search warrants at properties in Hillside and South Melbourne last Thursday night, Trident taskforce detectives on Friday charged Besim Beqiri of Hillside and 47-year-old Spanish national Jacinto Rodriguez Conejo with importing a commercial quantity of methamphetamines.

    Both men fronted the Melbourne Magistrates Court and were remanded to reappear at the court on January 23.

    The arrests came after customs and border protection officers searched a shipping container on September 4 and found a Chevrolet Impala with 30 kilograms of ice on board.

    Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Graham Ashton said the meth- amphetamine was secreted in the rear quarter panels of the vehicle in what was a very professional concealment.

    The Trident taskforce, which targets organised crime on the states waterfront, is a multi-agency effort involving Victoria Police, the Australian Taxation Office, Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre, Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, Australian Federal Police and the Australian Crime Commission.

    Its a disease that is hard to diagnose and has no cure.

    Dementia is a progressive brain disorder that affects thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday tasks, particularly in people aged over 65.

    Consultant geriatrician Claire White, who works at Sunshine Hospitals dementia assessment unit, is all too familiar with the debilitating effects of the disease.

    The dementia assessment unit is a dedicated 15-bed ward for people with dementia, particularly those showing the behavioural symptoms associated with the disease, including agitation, aggression, depression, paranoia and inappropriate behaviour.

    Dr White said the units staff members looked at what might be causing those behaviours and prescribed a management strategy based on the patients cognition, background, interests, hobbies and personality.

    Some individuals can have quite marked dementia and yet still be able to play with the ball engage in a group activity and really get a lot out of it, Dr White said.

    Dementia affects more than 332,000 Australians, but Dr White said it was important for older people to not be overly concerned by random bouts of forgetfulness. The warning signs to us are when family members are also commenting that the persons not remembering things. It starts to become more of an issue when peoples function also starts declining.

    With Dementia Awareness Month ending today, Dr White said social engagement, not drinking too much alcohol, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, a healthy diet and regular exercise were great ways to stave off dementia.

    An initiative that led to mental health clinicians joining forces with police to respond to mental health call-outs is to get a funding boost.

    The Mid-West Police and Clinician Emergency Response (PACER) initiative a partnership of Western Health, Brimbank and Melton police, Macedon Ranges and North Western Melbourne Medicare Local, NorthWestern Mental Health, Melbourne Health and Ambulance Victoria will share in $2.729 million of state government funding. The program, launched last month, allows police to call on the PACER unit when responding to any situation where someone is experiencing a mental health crisis. It will also link patients to relevant support services.

    State Health Minister Mary Wooldridge said the extra funding would deliver a more targeted and timely response to patients needing urgent medical health support and reduce pressure on police, ambulances and emergency departments.

    These initiatives will ensure that people with a mental illness receive the most appropriate and least restrictive care in a timely manner, she said.

    Western Health is one of 12 mental health services to get the funding, which is part of a $15.1 million state government promise to roll out a mental health and police response program across Victoria over the next four years.

    A joint campaign by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) and Country Fire Authority (CFA) has helped Brimbank home owners become more fire-savvy.

    MFB data shows preventable house fires during winter dropped 11 per cent compared to the same season last year, coinciding with the July launch of the Safe Mistake Zone campaign, according to a brigade spokesman.

    Firefighters attended 356 preventable house fires across metropolitan Melbourne this winter. In Brimbank, fire crews were called out to 23 preventable house fires in winter, including an early-morning blaze at a Taylors Lakes house that was caused by an electrical fault in an old radio.

    The houses elderly occupants and their pets escaped unharmed, but the single-storey brick veneer was extensively damaged.

    The campaign is aimed at raising awareness of the thousands of house fires that are caused by small mistakes each year.

    MFB acting chief officer Paul Stacchino said unattended cooking, electrical failures and discarded cigarettes were common fire starters. Its sad to see someone lose all their worldly possessions in a fire that could easily have been avoided, he said.

    In 2013, CFA and MFB crews attended 3559 preventable residential fires across the state, resulting in an estimated $90 million of property loss.

    An innovative program has linked Victoria University students to sports clubs to help the clubs secure sponsorship from local businesses.

    In its five years of operation, VUs sport sponsorship program has helped 150 sports clubs across the state secure more than $100,000 in sponsorships while giving sport and recreation management students industry experience.

    develop proposals to obtain cash, gifts, or in-kind support from local businesses.

    Over the five years, beneficiaries have included the Western Crusaders Gridiron Club, Yarraville Footscray Bowling Club, Footscray Baseball Club, Futsal Geelong and the Maribyrnong Swimming Club.

    VU sport and exercise science associate professor Clare Hanlon said benefits were threefold: students gained industry experience, local clubs prospered through sponsorship, and sponsors promoted their business through logos on team shirts, ground fence signage, publicity in club

    newsletters or by cross-promoting with other key sponsors.

    About 85 per cent of the clubs activate the proposals our students develop and, on average, each club receives about $4500 in sponsorship, Associate Professor Hanlon said. Students gain confidence in their ability to work with managers in sports clubs and this experience increases their employability skills.

    Yarraville Footscray Bowling Club manager Dhenai Veale said the program had been a godsend to the small, non-profit club.

    It gives us the chance to sustain and improve our grounds for the community, he said.

    St George Preca Primary School pupils have taken out a slew of awards at the state finals of Wakakirri, an Australian national story- sharing festival for primary schools.

    At the Victorian finals in Hamer Hall, the Caroline Springs school won the categories of division one best story, best original story, best performance on awards night, best school in public, and awards for set design, soundtrack, staging, storytelling, dancing and acting.

    The pupils now have to wait until October 16 when the national winners will be announced on Wakakirri TV.

    Wakakirri involves schools creating stories based on true events using dance, creative movement, acting, song and film.

    About 60 grade 5 and 6 pupils from St George Preca performed a piece called The Lost Children of Sudan, which charted the stories of the tens of thousands of children who were left orphaned and homeless when civil war ripped through Sudan.

    Its the third year the school has taken part in the Wakakirri competition.

    To win was just amazing, teacher Annalisa Seville said. [The performance] was part of our migration unit, where students were studying where they came from We had a guest speaker come out who was one of the lost children from the story.

    Hundreds of new mothers and babies in developing countries will have safer birth conditions, with a new society at Victoria University in St Albans hosting its first pregnancy kit assembly day on October 8.

    VUs College of Health and Biomedicine Society is calling for people to help put together birthing kits that contain essential items for a safe, hygienic home birth.

    We dont face the birth scares of many women in poorer countries, said society member Bahar Pordeli. Many of these mums give birth at home without blankets or scalpels to cut the umbilical cord.

    The United Nations estimates 385,000 women die each year in childbirth, with 99 per cent of the deaths occurring in developing countries. In Chad, a womans

    chance of dying from complications during pregnancy or birth is one in 15; in Somalia its one in 16. In Australia the rate is one in 8100 women.

    The birth kits contain a plastic sheet, a scalpel blade to cut the umbilical cord, gloves, a cord to prevent bleeding, gauze and soap. The kits will be given to the non-profit organisation Birthing Kit Foundation Australia to distribute in developing nations. The kit assembly session starts 10am at building six of VUs St Albans campus. There will be a sausage sizzle, drinks, entertainment and a certificate of accomplishment for all volunteers.     Being a Councillor in one of the fastest growing areas in Australia presents a number of great opportunities and challenges.

    As a Council, we work tirelessly to plan for and deliver the necessary infrastructure, facilities and services needed to support our residents now and into the future.

    An important part of this is planning for leisure and recreation facilities, including aquatic facilities.

    I am thrilled to be able to share with residents that Council recently endorsed the Melton City Council Aquatic Plan 2014-2034. This was one of my election promises and to see the plan adopted by Council is extremely rewarding.

    will investigate options to purchase a site for the development of a district or regional level Aquatic and Leisure Centre in the Plumpton area and a project to design and construct the new facility will be included in the 2017/2018 Capital Works Program for funding consideration.

    The plan also recommends that Melton Waves Leisure Centre be redeveloped with Council to consider this project for funding

    Also, subject to growth in population, Council will plan for a third smaller aquatic centre to be established in the Rockbank North area post 2025.

    This is an absolutely fantastic outcome and I would like to thank Councillors at the Council Meeting on 23 September for their unanimous support on this very important strategic document.

    The City of Meltons community spirit is one of our communitys greatest strengths. And, a time when this quality is always at its best is during our annual Community Safety Month

    celebrations held throughout October.

    Council, along with project partners Woodgrove Shopping Centre, CFA, Victoria Police, SES, Bunnings, Police Historical Society and the Lions Club, will be hosting its annual A Good Month for Safety family event at Woodgrove Shopping Centre on Saturday 4 October.

    Activities will run from 11am to 3pm in the High Street car park emergency service teams, free road and community safety resources and giveaways, a free sausage sizzle and free activities for families including an animal farm, jumping castles, face painting, magician and the live Snoopy and Friends Show.

    Further activities during Community Safety Month include a free classes, and a community road safety forum. For more details on these events visit Councils website www.melton.vic.gov.au

    I believe that personal and community safety should be high on everyones priority list. The events that Council is running during be more aware of the safety issues that surround them, and empower them to take charge and create a safe community for all.
