e disadvantaged families of more than 500 Brimbank students are battling to pay thousands of dollars of back-to-school costs.

For low-income parents, the lead-up to the late-January return is oen marred by the struggle to aord basic schooling necessities.

e Smith Family and its supporters are hoping to ease the burden and are presently looking aer 528 Brimbank students as part of the Learning for Life program, with a particular focus on St Albans.

    e program oers three support components: nancial support for parents to buy school uniforms, books and resources;

School costs hit parentsaccess to a Learning for Life program co-ordinator; and learning support programs such as mentoring and tutoring.

Derrimut father of two Brett Russell said he had already spent in the thousands getting his six-year-old son ready for prep.

You certainly have to budget for it, Mr Russell said.

eres a premium price for school shoes alone and kids go through school shoes pretty quickly. And theyre growing every year so last years uniform can be rendered useless.

Mr Russell said he knew many young families who were struggling with the costs.

Friends of ours with three kids are certainly struggling and making a lot of budgeting

manoeuvres, which we luckily havent had to do, he said. Parents are nding it pretty tough.

Smith Family general manager Anton Leschen estimated the return to school could cost parents more than $2000 a child, meaning low-income families struggled even before extra costs such as excursions, camps and extracurricular activities were imposed.

e cost of simply attending the local public school is getting beyond many disadvantaged families, Mr Leschen said.

rough no fault of their own, kids will start school with ill-tting or incomplete uniforms or a lack of essential books and stationery.

eyll miss out on excursions, sporting

and artistic pursuits simply because of a lack of nances and this inability to take part fully can adversely aect their learning.

Mr Leschen is calling on Brimbank residents to sponsor an Australian child in need

We have thousands of generous supporters who sponsor a child and receive an incredible amount of personal satisfaction as a result, he said. On the cusp of the new school year when many disadvantaged families turn their thoughts towards buying their childs new uniform, shoes and stationery were asking people to consider sponsoring an Australian child who is at risk of going without.

    To sponsor a student, contact 1800 024 069 or www.thesmithfamily.com.au.

Police have charged three men over the death of Michael Strike, whose body was found near Keilor cemetery in May last year.

Werribee man Luke Paul Maybus, 27, appeared briey before Melbourne Magistrates Court on ursday, charged with the murder of Mr Strike at Keilor East on May 24.

Maybus was also charged with arson and the of a motor vehicle.

Brunswick man John Walker, 32, was

homicide squad and Echo taskforce detectives seized a couch for forensic testing.

Police had also searched a landll site at Wyndham.

Mr Strike was found propped up against a tree and in a pool of blood by a passerby in or Court, Keilor, about 11.30am on May 25.

Homicide investigators have spent the past eight months trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the 38-year-old Dandenong mans death, which was deemed suspicious.

    Investigators have established that Mr

charged later the same day with a single count of murder, and 40-year-old Boronia man Joseph Girgis was charged with being an accessory to murder.

Walker and Girgis appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.

Police allege that the day aer killing Mr Strike, Maybus stole a white Ford transit wagon from Dohertys Gym, next door to the Bandidos bikie clubhouse on Weston Street, Brunswick, and set it alight in Footscray.

e charges follow a second raid on the Bandidos clubhouse last week, when

Strike arrived in Brunswick about 4.15pm on Saturday, May 24, and spent some time by himself at a hotel in Weston Street before leaving just aer 5.20pm.

He can then be seen on CCTV walking east along Weston Street.

But investigators have not been able to account for Mr Strikes whereabouts aer this time.

Police seized security footage and computer hard drives during the rst search warrant carried out on the Bandidos clubhouse last year.

Charges laid over body in street

A Deer Park actor is eagerly awaiting the release of his latest lm in Australia next month.

Steven Haar, 34, worked behind the lens this time around as an associate producer for Plan 9, a remake of 1959 science-ction thriller Plan 9 from Outer Space.

e new lm, which makes its world-wide debut on DVD in Australia on February 19, was lmed in the US state of Virginia.

It stars Brian Klause of Charmed and Sleepwalkers fame, Addy Miller from e Walking Dead, and James Rolfe from e Angry Video Game Nerd.

Haar said the original, which gained a cult status for being so bad that it was good, was a great movie to reimagine.

is has been a couple of years in the making, he said.

Being an independent movie, its harder to get the funding and source locations and get well-known actors and, once lming is

done, nding distribution, but I loved being involved.

Haar, whose favourites growing up included e ree Stooges, has spent his life chasing roles behind and in front of the camera.

He boasts a resum of feature lms, short movies and screenplays that he has been involved with including Dantes Inferno, Slayground and Slayground and Slayground M Is for Malarkey.

But it was his job as associate producer for the Australian feature lm Mystery: Born to Rock in which he also had a small acting role that resulted in his invitation to Cannes last year for the lms screening.

Haar, who loves both comedy and horror lms, says his ultimate role would be in a movie combining the two. Hes currently considering a few movie projects for this year but has yet to sign on a dotted line.

Brazen thieves have been robbing car washes in the western suburbs.

Sergeant Andrew Button, of the Melton crime investigation unit, warned locals to keep an eye out for thieves targeting car washes, mainly in Melton, Caroline Springs, Gisborne and Werribee.

Weve noticed a series of break-ins at car washes where people are trying to steal loose change from coin tins, Sergeant Button said. We think the break-ins are related.

Sergeant Button declined to comment on the nature of investigation but said police were pursuing a number of leads.

They believe the thieves are three men in their early 20s.

They try to gain access to the [coin machines], Sergeant Button said.

They cause a lot of damage to the machines and to the coin mechanisms in the process.

He said the spree started last month and the thieves had already broken into 10 car washes.

They had robbed some premises more than once.

Theyre mostly opportunistic crimes, happening at night or in the early hours of the morning, Sergeant Button said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Most university students spend their summer holidays living it up or earning a bit of money through a part-time job.

But not Mirsada Prasko . . . the 21-year-old from Deer Park has taken part in hands-on cancer research in recent weeks aer gaining a Cancer Council Victoria scholarship through its annual Summer Vacation Studentship program.

Ms Prasko is one of 13 science and medical research students from across the state spending six weeks over summer doing a range of cancer-related research, such as looking at how genes cause oesophageal cancer to the cancer-ghting properties of capsicums.

e program wraps up at the end of this month.

Ms Prasko, who will be doing an honours degree in developmental anatomy at Monash University this year, said the program had put her in good stead for her honours year and thesis.

Im focusing on prostate cancer and how fatty acids may actually lead to more aggressive forms of the cancer, so my project is based on knocking down fatty acids and seeing the eect, she said.

At the start, I was really scared, because coming from a bachelors degree, I didnt have much experience in the lab.

Now, approaching my honours, I feel a lot more condent.

e supervisors are really helpful, which Ive greatly appreciated.

Ive learned a lot of techniques and asked a lot of questions.

I feel like Ive got the most out of the experience.

Brimbank council sta have claimed more than $30,000 in overseas and interstate trips over the past two years.

Councils travel register, which details all travel by administrators and ocers, reveals six council sta took seven council-approved interstate trips last year.

Most were to attend and present at national conferences or award ceremonies.

e most expensive claim was $2700 from sports and recreation co-ordinator Ashley Fleming, who ew to Cairns last June to talk at the Parks and Leisure Australia national conference on two council projects that subsequently won awards.

Mr Fleming also attended the Parks and Leisure Australia national nalists awards dinner.

Last years travel claims were minor in comparison to the previous years registered expenses.

Corporate and community relations director Helen Morrissey said Brimbank council approved 17 trips totalling $24,482.93 for the 2013 calendar year.

Any application by sta to attend a conference, meeting or training program interstate or overseas is considered very carefully, taking into account the merits of the proposal, Ms Morrissey said. is includes the demonstrable learning or benet that it oers council, and therefore, in the long-term, to the community.

e sacrice and stories of 61 brave Keilor residents who served Australia in World War I have been enshrined in a book and DVD by Keilor Historical Society.

Society president Susan Jennison said the society was excited about creating a legacy for these brave people.

Weve been working on very ne timelines, she said.

We started the DVD production in December, using much of the work weve spent the last few years doing.

e books aim of raising awareness of the 59 soldiers and two nurses who stepped up in wartime has been helped by a $25,000 federal government grant.

Fawkner Embona taskforce detectives say the 21-year-old man was returning to his truck parked on McInnes Close when he was approached by three men at about 1.15am. The trio, one armed with a metal pole, demanded cash from the driver, who handed over a small amount. One of the men struck the victim in the ribs with the pole before damaging the van.

A new soccer club aimed at bridging the gap between social and maintstream competition for young immigrants is kicking goals.

e Brimbank Community Soccer Hub has brought together a number of teens who have been playing soccer on a casual basis to give players a chance to operate and compete in their own sports club.

Many of the young men involved, who have recently migrated to Australia from South Sudan, Burma, Iran and East Africa, have so far been unable to access mainstream competitions and facilities. e club is already starting to eld teams to play competitively but will maintain its open-door approach for young men who want to train or play casually.

Football Federation Victoria (FFV) chief executive Peter Gome has praised the project.

e Brimbank hub has been a great success in bridging the gap between purely social and mainstream competitions which has in the past been a challenge for some of our emerging communities, Gome said.

It has also helped its members gain an insight into running a sports club so theyll be well placed to play in more formal FFV competitions in future.

e hub is a joint initiative of Brimbank council and Victoria University. VU researcher Alison Baker is conducting a study of the hubs success and says she is documenting and exploring how to make sport, particularly soccer, more accessible for young men and women who have recently settled in Australia.

A man involved in smuggling cocaine and methamphetamine from Mexico in bottles of beer has lost a bid to appeal his conviction.

Adrian Franze was sentenced to 17 years jail, with a minimum of 13 years, for his role in importing the bottles, which were stored at Sunshine and Yarraville.

His co-oender, Erol Ramazanoglu, pleaded guilty to identical charges, while a third co-oender ed and hasnt been located.

Franze sought to appeal his conviction on grounds that the Supreme Court jury had been misdirected about his criminal responsibility and about whether he knew the drugs exceeded the commercial quantity.

In refusing to grant leave to appeal, three Supreme Court appeal judges ruled there was no misdirection and that the consignment was almost 200 times the commercial quantity of methamphetamine and more than seven times the commercial quantity of cocaine.

In August 2013, Franze, then 33, was jailed aer being found guilty of attempting to possess 14 kilograms of cocaine and 133 kilograms of methamphetamine.

Australian Federal Police intercepted the drugs arrival on October 14, 2011, and lled 1100 similar bottles with water before attaching fresh Mexican beer labels to them. Listening devices were also hidden in the consignment.

Ten days later, Franze and a co-oender took delivery of the reconstituted consignment at a warehouse they operated in Westside Drive,

Laverton North. According to the Crown, Franze could be heard arguing about the drugs with his co-oenders, making statements about not wanting to drive the van.

Franzes defence was that these comments referred to him not wanting to drive the van to Altona Gate Shopping Centre as the bottles might be damaged in the underground car park.

Police tracked the bottles being moved from the Laverton North warehouse to a unit in Fairbairn Road, Sunshine.

Franze gave evidence that on October 25, 2011, with his co-oenders becoming concerned about police surveillance, Ramazanoglu had intended to go to the Sunshine unit to empty the bottles down the drain.

e next day, 43 of the 46 boxes containing the bottles were moved to Ramazanoglus home in Roberts Road, Yarraville.

A listening device recorded him opening bottles, pouring out liquids and discussing how to dispose of the bottles.

at night, police raided Ramazanoglus home. He was caught trying to eat paper which had instructions from Franze written on it.

e following day, Franze handed himself in to police.

    Bugs clinch drug conviction

Franze could be heard arguing about the drugs - Crown evidenceWhen people think of the Victorian gold rush, Ballarat and Bendigo are oen the rst places that come to mind.

Keilor East artist Debbie Qadri is keen to show Keilors part in the golden post-1852 era, and to do so shes glued ceramic tiles to create a mural on a ventilation tower above a sewerage pipe. e project was completed last week.

e gold rush turned Keilor into a bustling town, from an area when it was virtually unknown, Qadri said. Since last September, she has worked with more than 20 year 8 students from Overnewton College, their art teacher and the Keilor Historical Society on the Overnewton Road project.

When people arrived in Melbourne in the

1850s, they would buy a wheelbarrow and a spade and use the wheelbarrow to push their belongings towards the goldelds, a journey of many days over rough ground, she said.

e rst stop on the journey was Essendon aer a days walk, and the second stop on thatjourney aer two days walking was Keilor.

Qadri also worked on a mosaic mural unveiled last month in the Deer Park Arcade.

is mural features past and present icons of the area, including the Deer Park Hotel, the Albion Explosives Factory, the Black Powder Mill, the old Kororoit State School and the 1928-built bridge over the Kororoit Creek.

Sunshine housing market is on the move.A new development, the Royal estate, which

fronts Wright Street and backs on to Kororoit Creek, will release 97 blocks in three stages, oering a range of single and double-storey homes and townhouses.

Ben omas, director of developer ree Pillars, said several stage one allotments had already been sold aer their release just before Christmas.

He said the developers were attracted to Sunshines reputation as a growth suburb and its potential for further growth.

Sunshine had the second-fastest real estate price growth in Victoria for the June 2014 quarter, with a 23.2 per cent jump in the median house price to $539,000. e median dipped slightly to $535,000 in the September quarter.

With limited opportunities for quality residential land available in Sunshine, there has already been a considerable level of inquiry among local home buyers and investors, Mr omas said.

e site was chosen for its potential, as well as its location within 12 kilometres of the CBD and within easy reach of the popular regional cities of Bendigo and Geelong.

Further, the estate is near Buckingham Reserve, which is one of ve agship parks developed by Brimbank council, as well as Sunshines sporting amenities and medical and educational facilities.

Residents will also benet from ample public transport options, he said.

A woman has been sentenced to eight months jail aer she was found guilty of torching a car and cleaning a St Albans house in a bid to destroy evidence of a fatal stabbing.

Crystal Portelli, 29, pleaded guilty to one count of assisting an oender and one count of arson following the stabbing death of Hieu Nguyen in May, 2013.

Portelli had been living in the bedroom of a house at Alfrieda Street, St Albans, when a group of people, including Nguyen, arrived

Portelli had not been at the house at the time of the attack.

Upon her return, she took control of the clean-up of the house and arranged for the car used to dump Nguyen to be torched in a bid to destroy the blood in the vehicle.

Supreme Court Justice Lex Lasry said Portelli had made a considerable eort to protect those directly responsible for the attack.

It appears that this cleaning eort went on for some considerable time, he said.

You told another witness that you had spent the day cleaning the premises, getting rid

on May 10, 2013, to drink and take drugs. Some time during the night, Nguyen was struck with a bottle and stabbed aer a ght over heroin.

He was dumped opposite Sunshine Hospitals emergency department, where he later died.

of all the blood using bleach. is was a very sustained eort.

Justice Lasry said Portelli had shown some remorse in a letter she had written to the court and by pleading guilty to her actions.

He also referred to her previous criminal history, which included 18 prior convictions from ve court appearances.

ey involve levels of violence and a disregard for the rules that should govern our behaviour, he said.

Portelli was sentenced to eight months jail and 100 hours of community work.

An impromptu snap caught on his smartphone has paid dividends for Caroline Springs resident Michael Angelini.

e 24-year-old architecture graduate beat more than a thousand entrants to have a photo he took, dubbed Summer Heat, immortalised on a Jeanswest T-shirt and sold in more than 230 stores in Australia and New Zealand.

e Snap Shot Series competition, which has run for the past ve years, oers amateur and professional photographers the chance to have their work bought and worn by the public.

Mr Angelini said he was thrilled to be one of seven winners chosen to have their photographs printed. Many of my family and friends have said that once it comes out, theyre going to buy one for themselves and tell everyone that my friend took this photo.

e winning snap was taken on a warm summers day at the shops. e part-time waiter said he usually kept his DSLR camera nearby

but this time he only had his smartphone on him. A lot of people think its St Kilda because of the palm trees and clear blue skies, but its actually Doncaster shopping centre, he said.

I had just come outside and saw this magnicent sunset behind the palm trees and had to take a shot of it.

Mr Angelini says Caroline Springs is also great for photography, and hes hoping for another potential winning shot of the town centre or the lake.

Jeanswest menswear designer Clint Curtis said Michaels striking shot instantly stood out. Its a classic urban summer snap, a moment captured in summertime with that quintessential sunset that could be St Kilda, Manly or LA, he said.

Two Brooklyn businesses have been slapped with nes totalling more than $14,000 for failing to minimise dust coming from their premises.

e Environment Protection Authority (EPA) issued $7381 nes to J&M Ridol Transport Services Pty Ltd and Butler Freight Services Pty Ltd for not complying with pollution abatement notices to implement management plans and engineering solutions to minimise dust. Another four companies were given ocial warnings relating to mud and dust leaving their premises.

EPA metropolitan manager Richard Marks said dust from premises like these had contributed to poor air quality for Brooklyn residents. Mr Marks warned businesses to expect more enforcement action over coming weeks.

ere are currently 27 pollution abatement notices in place on businesses, and 65 per cent of those reached their nal compliance date at the end of December 2014, he said. EPA ocers will follow up on whether these notices have been addressed as part of a compliance operation taking place this month..

More than 50 dust notices have been served on businesses in Brooklyn and Tottenham since 2010. e EPAs most recent air monitoring results show there were 24 days between January 1 and October 31 last year when the air quality exceeded the PM10 air quality objective. PM10 are particles less than 10 micrometers in diameter that can enter the lungs, potentially causing serious health problems.

Brimbank residents with disabilities will have improved access to almost 20 local bus stops, following upgrade work to be done in March.

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) is calling for expressions of interest for the contract, with 38 existing bus stops throughout Melbourne set to undergo minor civil construction works.

e bus stops will be upgraded to meet Disability Discrimination Act requirements to make the network more accessible,, a PTV spokesman said.

e bus stops to be upgraded include two on Mount Derrimut Road in Derrimut; three on Berkshire Road and one on Northumberland Road in Sunshine North; and two on Callaway Boulevard and Glengala Road in Sunshine

West. Nine stops in St Albans, Cairnlea, Albanvale, Delahey and Hillside will also be improved.

Depending on a number of factors, its anticipated the contract will be awarded mid to late-February, with works expected to begin within two to four weeks, the spokesman said.

is is a request for tender, and PTV cannot discuss the value of the package of works at this time.

There are days most people wish they were someone more glamorous or exciting. A career in the performance industry allows actors to embrace this desire through the characters they play, which is what attracted Taylors Lakes Secondary College student James Todoroski to it.I just nished studying a certicate II in screen acting, which gave me an entry-level insight into what the industry is like, the 17-year-old says. Our class went on two excursions to Abbotsford Convent where we had our photos taken and learnt how to get an agent and auditions. He says last year was an eye-opener and a giant learning curve. We had stunt actor Chris Peters come to our school and he explained theres a lot of work involved in making it in the industry, Todoroski says. He taught us how to do a ip, barrel roll and basic roll, which was a lot of fun. This year, Todoroski will study for a certicate III while studying his VCE.I enjoy acting because it has showed me a way to express myself and to get lost in a character.

Todoroski says he was once too scared to audition for his colleges annual productions, now he has the condence he needs and hopes to audition this year. And he is considering acting as a possible career. But, its not just performing that has caught his eye; music and comedy are also in his sights.Im interested in music production and write my own electronic dance tunes then upload them to SoundCloud under the alias otrov, he says. And I performed a stand-up sketch at the Comics Lounge in Melbourne a couple of months ago and hope to do it again. I love humour and would have loved to be in the movie Dumb and Dumber; its simple but it works. He admits before the course he didnt know anything about performing but now loves it.Id say to other kids interested in acting to just go for it. Iggy Azalea [Aussie rapper] and Steve Aoki [American electro-house musician] inspire me, and I hope to be as successful as them one day.

Most children sing and dance almost as soon as they walk, often in front of the TV mimicking The Wiggles. Not only is dancing a great way to keep youngsters entertained but it also has health and cognitive benets. Its a great way to improve strength and exibility, posture and balance, and helps children express themselves, according to the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, one of the worlds leading dance examination boards. Some kids may be bored running around a track or playing other sports but dancing provides them with a fun way to keep t and out of trouble while meeting new friends.Dancing helps with co-ordination, which is necessary for many other sports and life activities. And bopping along to a beat is ideal for children to improve their memory by learning new steps and moves for various routines. Non-verbal communication is another skill toe-tappers can add to their repertoire, which is something they learn while boogieing.Local dance schools offer a range of dance classes suited to boys and girls, whether they choose to be a ballerina or a hip-hop, tap, rap or jazz dancer.Singing to favourite songs is part of the dance experience and can be benecial to young minds too. Singing helps in childrens speech development and language construction, along with teaching them about tone, beat and rhythm.Dance schools often have singing classes as part of their programs, allowing children to embrace two things they love while being creative and learning, probably without even realising it.Parents looking for new activities to keep their kids away from computer games and too much TV may nd their local dance school has the answer. With classes catering for toddlers through to teens, theres bound to be a move and grove session that appeals.

    A Proud Community Growing Together

Melton City Council Community NewsMOVING AHEAD

Happy New Year! The Christmas rush is well and truly behind us, and I for one hope that all our residents enjoyed a safe and joyous festive season with family and friends. Summer is well and truly upon us so now is a great time to get out

and enjoy all the fun- lled activities our wonderful community has to offer. A great family event that I encourage all residents to attend is Councils Australia Day celebrations at the Willows Historical Park, next Monday.Australia Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the great things this country has to offer, and welcome all the new citizens who have chosen to call our community home. So, come along and enjoy kids activities and live entertainment.

Those of you who have been getting out and making the most of our long, summer days will certainly have noticed the marked increase in the number of trees and shrubs popping up throughout our community.

Council has an extensive tree planting program that improves the look and feel of neighbourhoods, while providing shade and attracting wildlife. Over 2,000 trees have been planted in the last year across the City, including Melton, Diggers Rest, Caroline Springs and Rockbank, to name a few.
