having to take them to the tip and that just costs us money.’’

Salvos Stores marketing co-ordinator Aife O’Loughlin said unsuitable donations were a continuous problem, which typically spiked in the weeks aer Christmas.

‘‘It costs us in excess of $6 million Australia- wide to dispose of rubbish and items unsuitable for donations,” Ms O’Loughlin said. “is money could be put to much better use.’’

She said Salvos Stores had a sustainability manager who worked with councils to solve the perennial problem of dumping.

By Matt Crossman

Broken tables, soiled mattresses and busted armchairs were among many useless items dumped outside Sunbury opportunity shops in recent weeks, lumping charities with expensive disposal costs.

Star Weekly spoke to volunteers from several Star Weekly spoke to volunteers from several Star Weeklylocal op shops, who said they were tired of coming to work on Monday mornings to nd broken or unsuitable items piled up on footpaths or in carparks.

Vinnies manager Evelyn Banavas said

some people don’t realise that by leaving their donations out of hours, they are making them available for other people to rummage through or be damaged by weather and even rodents.

Ms Banavas said people who wanted to donate items should speak to a volunteer during business hours.

‘‘Our store is open six days a week,’’ she said.‘‘If people come in, we can also explain that

we can’t accept some things like cots because safety standards may have changed, or child car seats because we can’t check their integrity.

‘‘ings like soiled mattresses, we end up

‘‘Some councils have opted to ne those who have illegally dumped items on the street.’’

Hume city infrastructure director Daryl Whitfort said the council did not issue nes for such oences, but court-imposed penalties for people convicted under the Litter Act ranged from $500 to $1000, plus costs.

‘‘Council has implemented camera surveillance at identied priority areas in the community,’’ Mr Whitfort said.

He said 15 oenders had been prosecuted for varying levels of illegal dumping in the city over the past six months.

Op shops want dumping to stop

Wildlife volunteers continue to scour the charred bush of Black Hill, rescuing animals injured in the blaze that tore through the area three weeks ago.

Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network volunteers have already removed about a dozen animals from the re ground, including several wallabies, a family of kangaroos and an echidna. Most had burnt paws.

e network’s re ground co-ordinator, Tania Begg, said they had also come across the remains of many smaller, less fortunate animals.

She said animals that spent much of their time in trees, such as possums and gliders, had few places to go in the event of a major re.

Animals rescued by the network’s 10 or so volunteers have been taken to shelters in Pastoria and Woodend to be nursed back to health.

Ms Begg said volunteers would visit the site, north of Kyneton, daily over coming weeks.

‘‘ere’ll still be animals suering from the eects of the re for eight or so weeks, so we’ll be keeping an eye on things for as long as we can.’’

Black Hill reserve remains closed to the public following the January 7 blaze, which was started by lightning and tore through 250 hectares of bush and farm land.

Hundreds of kilometres of fencing and several outbuildings were also destroyed.

Friends of Black Hill Reserve president Daryl Kellett described the outcome of the re, which also burnt 3000 new trees, as tragic and said the reserve would take ‘‘20 to 30 years to recover’’.

A temporary number has been set up to report animals aected by the re: phone 0476 158 080.

Residents in bushre-prone areas of Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges are being urged to check they have adequate home insurance because of stricter building codes introduced in the wake of 2009’s Black Saturday.

Victorian Building Authority technical and regulation director Jarrod Edwards said it was vital that people checked their insurance cover before it was too late.

‘‘e last thing you need in the devastating event of losing your home in a bushre is to discover your insurance policy doesn’t cover all the costs associated with rebuilding,’’ he said.

A recent statewide survey conducted for insurance company AAMI found only 22 per cent of home owners in areas of bushre risk had contacted their insurer to check or update their cover.

A separate Insurance Council of Australia report found 14 per cent of people in high re danger areas weren’t certain their insurance covered them against bushre.

Mr Edwards said houses rebuilt to meet the requirements of the new codes could cost signicantly more than the original, which needed to be factored into the amount of insurance cover.

He said people in high-risk areas should also talk to a registered builder about mandatory design features required in the event of a rebuild.

Norm Glenn, director of Gisborne builder Prime-Metro Homes, said residents must do their research.

‘‘Don’t believe the advertised cost of what it takes to build a display home,’’ he said. ‘‘People in a designated bushre area should add extra costs to the rebuild.’’

Plans for sports expansionMacedon Ranges council has bought 12 hectares of vacant land opposite its new netball complex at New Gisborne. The land, at the corner of Hamilton and Barringo roads, will be used to build two sports ovals, a pavilion, playground and parking facilities. Deputy mayor Russell Mowatt said the council purchased the land to ensure it could meet the future recreational needs of people in the area. Plans will be developed after the land is rezoned.

Roadworks warningVicRoads hopes to complete works on Gisborne-Melton Road by March. The project includes installing wire rope safety barriers, extending culverts and removing hazardous trees along a three-kilometre section between Braeside and Couangalt roads. Works are being carried out between 7am and 6pm each weekday. Trafc will be reduced to a single lane at times.

A Gisborne supermarket can lay claim to being a cut above the rest after taking out a national meat award for the third year running. Williamson’s Foodworks was recently awarded for having the chain’s best meat department Australia-wide, beating out 600 other stores. Director David Williamson said it was the rst time the feat had been achieved. He said it was tting recognition of the work put in by the team of 15 employed at his Gisborne and Sunbury stores. “The award’s rated on the standard, quality, range and pricing,” Mr Williamson said. “We’ve always aimed to provide butcher shop quality at supermarket prices.” Matt Crossman

A Woodend trader fears someone will have to be seriously injured before something is done about a ‘‘dangerous’’ intersection in the centre of town.

Danielle Corner is reviving a campaign seeking a new VicRoads study and consideration of a roundabout to ease trac and improve safety at the corner of Anslow and High streets.

Ms Corner said a steady stream of complaints and a wave of discussion on social media had prompted her to start another petition, aer almost 2000 people supported a 2010 eort.

Campaign supporters will meet Macedon Labor MP Mary-Anne omas this week to highlight their concerns.

Ms Corner, who was involved in a crash at the site in 2008, said the sound of tooting horns and cars screeching was ‘‘almost like background music’’ near the busy inter- section.

‘‘Every day we’re hearing of near misses,’’ she said. ‘‘Buses also pick up school kids near Holgates [Brewhouse] then there’s all the bicycles, and the trac in town is always increasing.’’

Ms Corner said the intersection was confusing enough for Woodend residents, let alone people visiting.

‘‘A roundabout would reduce confusion as to who has right of way and would force a reduced speed along High Street,’’ she said.

Ms Corner said a bend in the road, a clock tower and gardens near the intersection all reduced visibility.

She questioned VicRoads gures showing there had been only one low-impact crash at the intersection in the past ve years, adding

Town braces for a crash

that while a roundabout might be costly, safety was more important.

VicRoads regional director Mal Kersting said the authority had no immediate plans to upgrade the intersection.

‘‘e section of High Street operates within a low-speed environment,” he said. “On an

average day, around 6200 vehicles use this stretch of road and there is good visibility. Service roads … provide safe and easy access to Woodend’s commercial precinct.”

Ms Corner said a new petition would soon be available at Woodend businesses.

A major property developer has been slammed for distributing a pamphlet promoting a controversial Woodend housing development that has eectively been rejected by Macedon Ranges council.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson said residents opposed to the Davies Hill project were extremely disappointed by the pamphlet, which asks residents if they would like the matter discussed further.

But Villawood executive director Rory

February 2012 but was not formally considered by the council.

Last October, a planning amendment that would have paved the way for a 150-lot development and potential retirement village was unanimously rejected by councillors.

e proposal was deemed premature because the recently adopted Woodend structure plan had identied sucient land supply in the town for at least 18 years.

Last week, Cr Anderson said it was disappointing that Villawood seemed not to accept the council’s position.

Costelloe claimed the long-running planning process had been characterised by a ‘‘lack of transparency’’.

Mr Costelloe said Villawood had been part of Woodend for six years and he was encouraged by responses to the pamphlet, which oers respondents the chance to win double passes to Australian Open tennis quarter-nals.

e developer rst lodged a proposal for 650 lots at Davies Hill in 2011, but the plan was rejected by councillors as it did not t the town’s character.

A revised 290-lot proposal was submitted in

“Council is committed to implementing the settlement strategy and Woodend structure plan as adopted,’’ she said.

Woodend resident Maxwell Winchester said the Villawood pamphlet could easily give the impression to new residents that there’d been no consultation.

“But there’s been six years of it,’’ Dr Winchester said. ‘‘I understand they have made a signicant investment and they want a return, but there’s nothing stopping them from developing the land in line with the policy that’s there.’’

10 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 20, 2015

Most children sing and dance almost as soon as they walk, often in front of the TV mimicking The Wiggles. Not only is dancing a great way to keep youngsters entertained but it also has health and cognitive benets. It’s a great way to improve strength and exibility, posture and balance, and helps children express themselves, according to the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, one of the world’s leading dance examination boards. Some kids may be bored running around a track or playing other sports but dancing provides them with a fun way to keep t and out of trouble while meeting new friends.Dancing helps with co-ordination, which is necessary for many other sports and life activities. And bopping along to a beat is ideal for children to improve their memory by learning new steps and moves for various routines. Non-verbal communication is another skill toe-tappers can add to their repertoire, which is something they learn while boogieing.

Local dance schools offer a range of dance classes suited to boys and girls, whether they choose to be a ballerina or a hip-hop, tap, rap or jazz dancer.

Singing to favourite songs is part of the dance experience and can be benecial to young minds too. Singing helps in children’s speech development and language construction, along with teaching them about tone, beat and rhythm.

Dance schools often have singing classes as part of their programs, allowing children to embrace two things they love while being creative and learning, probably without even realising it.

Parents looking for new activities to keep their kids away from computer games and too much TV may nd their local dance school has the answer.

With classes catering for toddlers through to teens, there’s bound to be a move and grove session that appeals.

This age old question never goes away. House prices and rents have both risen lately, but there are signs

both are stabilizing. Shall I continue to rent, or shall I look to buy a home. Some consumers can save the

difference between their rent payment and a monthly mortgage payment. Unfortunately, many don’t have

such discipline and end up being lifetime renters as they sit and watch housing rise in price over the long

term. There is nothing better in forced savings to compare with the purchase of a home. And there are

very few other investments where a housing loan provider will lend the majomajoma rity of the purchase price to

the buyer. While capital growth may be sparse in the short term, gearing and compulsory savings greatly

benefit homeowners. Don’t forget that the capital gains for owner/occupied homes are tax-free. Another

point to remember is that you can actually live in your investment, you are the master of your domain and

you can do what you want with it (within legal restriction)

You don’t have to worry about lease problems and being asked to vacate. You have security and the

knowledge that you won’t be forever paying rent. People who criticise others for buying in a slowing

market are forgetting that when conditions change so will the entry barriers. Inevitably, housing prices

rise over the long term drops. If we at Dunlop Real Estate can be of service answering your real estate

queries, feel free to phone me, John Dunlop, on 9744 2555 or to call into our friendly offices at Sunbury

and Gisborne for courteous assistance.

The Renter’s Conundrum

On nearly nine hectares with spectacular views towards Daylesford and Mount Franklin, this cottage-style double storey is an ode to timber throughout, with walls, ceilings (some cathedral) and exposed beams all in pine. Coupled with slate oor tiles and neutral carpets, it has a denite country vibe which suits its setting – and if that doesn’t suit, a few licks of paint would change the feel entirely. There are three bedrooms, a parent’s retreat and a study (or optional fourth bedroom). Next to a meals area with wood heater, the kitchen is also replete with timber in cabinetry and has a wall oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. An outdoor area has a pizza oven and verandahs provide another spot for relaxation. An old railway carriage in the grounds would make a perfect studio or sleepout while adding value. Verdant paddocks and a productive olive grove maintained by a great water supply are other treats at this special place known as Mount Olivette.

On a block of about 673 square metres in a quiet court and with easy access to all services, this brick veneer (of about 16 squares) is well suited to a young family or astute investor. It has four bedrooms, the main with built-in wardrobe and en suite; others are serviced by a bathroom and separate toilet. Two good-sized living areas are a boon for providing the kids with their own space. The compact kitchen has a gas freestanding cooker and a big window with views to an excellent enclosed outdoor room with paving underfoot that extends out into the backyard where there’s lots of lawn and ornamental shrubs. The property has ceiling fans, wall gas heater, air-conditioner, split-system and a concrete driveway leading to a single garage.

Bound to tempt lovers of a rural lifestyle, especially those with a passion for organic growing and potential distribution to niche markets, this lovely property of about 6.07 hectares not only has two houses (on separate meters) but also an old vineyard with drip and overhead spray infrastructure intact. The main house is a rustic original Victorian (mid 1860s) amid cottage gardens, with three bedrooms (each with replace), bathroom, two toilets and a living room with replace. The rural kitchen has a Rayburn slow-combustion cooker, dishwasher and a freestanding cooker. The second eco-friendly smart-design house is a wonderful conversion from the original shearing shed, with two bedrooms, bathroom, modern kitchen, a large living area, and an independent studio permit. Solar panels, orchards, an original barn, a really big new shed, huge water tanks, a bore, drystone walls, historic outbuildings and fantastic views make this property very special.

A superb set-up for horses and a great house with an utterly contemporary vibe deliver a double-dip of attractions on this beautifully turned-out property of about 4.04 hectares in a secluded setting – but just a few minutes from Gisborne’s shops and schools. Horses and humans will feel equally pampered here because there’s not a trick missed when it comes to lifestyle comforts and infrastructure supports.

First, the house. For a place built a while ago, it certainly plays an ace in the style stakes. Polished hardwood oorboards start from entry and ow down a hallway and into all bedrooms;

juxtaposed with crisp white wall paint and charcoal roller blinds (throughout), it’s all streamlined modernity.

But where things really hum is in the expansive living hub to the left of entry. Large-format soft-grey oor tiles that bounce around lots of natural light admitted through big windows, a TV niche above bespoke (white) cabinetry incorporating wood storage for the heater in here, and an on-trend kitchen show a deft interior design hand. Glossy black cabinetry (lots of drawers), black stone benchtops, soft-grey glass splashback, smart walk-in pantry, and dishwasher and 900mm cooker by Blanco are a chic

combination in the cooks’ domain, which opens to a covered outdoor space.

A short hallway (closets all along) from the kitchen has the laundry, separate toilet, and a bathroom designed for pleasure: a freestanding bathtub, oating vanity unit in glossy white, a huge walk-in shower, heated towel rail and mid-grey porcelain wall tiles. Seriously nice.

The four bedrooms each have mirrored robes and share a modern skylit bathroom and, off the same hallway (with big storage room), there’s a carpeted rumpus room. At hall’s end, three steps head down to an entertainment room with bar, outside access and split-system. And

then, right next door, comes a treat: a massive indoor solar-heated pool under a cedar-lined ceiling inset with three skylights.

Horsey/lifestyle stuff? A 60x20-metre menage with lights, tack and feed rooms, two stables, 11 loose boxes in 17 watered paddocks (central laneway with turning point), two big sheds, a chook complex, dog run, three bores (one windmill, two electric), seven water tanks and a dam.

Keypad entry at gate, gas ducted heating and evaporative cooling are other drawcards at a property replete with them.

“RESPONSIBILITY”First and foremost – a very Happy, healthy andprosperous 2015 to you all!

2015 has started with fires! South Australia has hada dreadful time and we, in Victoria, have not beenspared, and this is just the start of summer!

To what extent can we be responsible for the safety ofour own property?

Living in the Macedon Ranges or any rural area meansaccepting bush fire risk and making the appropriatepreparations.

Cleaning up of grass, bushes and rubbish is the firststep. A wide fire break around rural properties oraround lifestyle properties is very important. Removelow growing branches from trees and clean up fallenlimbs. Make sure driveways are clear and safe.Remove all flammable material from gutters, underhouses, from around sheds and keep verandah’s clear.clear.clearGum trees, though beautiful, are highly flammableand not really appropriate close to dwellings.

The CFACFACF volunteers do a spectacular job fighting firesand keeping us safe.

Listen to their advice! If the CFACFACF or Police recommendevacuation, then leave! Bricks and mortar can bereplaced, life cannot.

This summer be safe and be responsible.

Let us hope that 2015 is a wonderful year and a safeone for all.

ree words could be used to describe shiraz from the Barossa Valley: big, rich and bold. But there’s more to the Barossa than just opulent shiraz, with its avours and structure changing as you head from north to south. Dierences between rainfall and altitude and a wide range of soil types all play their part.

“e Barossa is made up of three major towns: Tanunda, Nuriootpa and Angaston, but (also) myriad hamlets,” says Wolf Blass winemaker Steven Frost.

For 100 years these hamlets produced wines of dierent styles until the large producers arrived, taking grapes from around the region and blending them to become the wines that helped launch a thousand shiraz ships.

“Traditionally the little producers in the Barossa were very town, or parish, driven. Being poor German settlers, there are little parishes – towns – where everyone had to travel by cart to their own little winery,” Frost says.

“With mechanisation and as we’ve become bigger as an industry, some little guys have stayed true to their little spot, and bigger guys, like us, who have come along late on the scene in the ’60s and the early ’70s, are not limited to sourcing from their own little spot.”

Each year Frost makes shiraz from vineyards dotted through the Barossa and Eden valleys, before blending them to create the Wolf Blass suite of wines. Here are the dierences he sees in shiraz from dierent parts of the Barossa Valley.

Southern BarossaStarting at Lyndoch, the Barossa’s most southern sub-region has the lowest altitude and the highest rainfall. It’s surrounded by undulating hills, with deep, rich soils. e best wines come from vineyards on the hills. “e vines are richer and lusher,” Frost says. “We pick this region the earliest because it grows with more canopy and the fruit ripens faster. e fruit is generally more fragrant, charming and more in the so plum and berry fruits and the least tannic and structured throughout the Barossa Valley.”

Central BarossaHeading north through to Dorrien, in the heart of the Barossa, the altitude rises to 260 to 300metres. Gully winds from the Eden Valley cool the area in the early evening and lead to relatively cold nights.

e best-performing grapes are grown in deep, rich soil along the North Para River. “e wines all have fantastic, savoury tannins and blue fruit avours. It’s quite unique,” Frost says.

To the north“In the northern valley, in what the locals call Ebenezer but we can’t because the name has been trademarked, it’s higher again, at 320metres,” Frost says. “As you travel north, the vegetation drops o. It gets cooler nights but conditions are harder during the day.

“Deep, rich-red clays hold the winter rains and the vines have to work hard to access that water. e slow, harsh conditions build more intensity in the wines and it provides the rich opulent style of Barossa shiraz everyone knows: bigger, richer, more powerful wines [than in the south], with rich plum and chocolate avours.”

Wolf Blass has recently released a range of sub-regional Barossa shiraz under the Sapphire label. (iS

Weather proved to be the spoiler for Central Highlands’ under-18 cricketers at the Victorian Bushrangers under-18 state championships.

e Highlanders nished second in group D with a win, loss and weather-aected draw in the round robin stage of the competition.

ey were due to face Gippsland Pride in the quarter-nals last Wednesday, but the match was called o because of rain-saturated grounds, leaving Pride to progress to the semi-nals because it was higher on the ladder in the group stage.

“It’s very disappointing that we are out to another team because of ladder position,” Highlanders coach Paul Jerey said. “It’s a very hollow feeling … you can’t control the weather.”

Jerey said the Highlanders had set out to make the nals.

“We wanted to make the nals and see how far we could go,” he said. “e weather meant that didn’t happen.”

Captain Blake omson was the standout for the Highlanders, with 167 in two hits.

“He performed really well and was disappointed that he didn’t get on the eld,” Jerey said.

“Nick Strangio [from Bacchus Marsh Cricket Club], our spin bowler, got wickets in both games and the seam bowlers did their bit, too.

“Jakob Tidyman, our opener, made 77 in the second game.”

Despite the disappointing end, Jerey said the players had learnt a lot.

“ey gelled together well and had a lot of fun, on and o the eld.

“ey learnt a lot … even though a couple of games were washed out.

“Five or six of the boys are bottom-age players and can play next year.”

In the VicSpirit under-16 state championships, the Highlander girls nished eighth aer losing their semi- nal to South East Bayside Breakers.

Sent in, the Highlanders struggled to make just 66, Tayla Harris top scoring with 20.

In reply, the Breakers made 7-110. Natalie Svanosio took two wickets.

e under-14 girls nished o the championships in style with a win over the Barwon Rockettes. e Highlanders bowled the Rockettes out for 54, with Imogen Barlow (Gisborne Cricket Club), Rebecca Sinclair and Sophie Dyer taking two wickets each.

In reply, the Highlanders made 88 for their rst win in the competition.

Highlanders’ hopes dashed

Riddell wanted to make amends for its loss to Sunbury United last week, and Wallan just happened to be the unlucky team to cop it.

e Bombers has sat in prime position on the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup ladder all season, but the Wallan loss narrowed the gap between them and the rest to two points.

With that in mind, Bombers coach Heath Wadden said they wanted to make the most of playing against the winless Wallan.

Riddell shows again who’s boss“I said to the guys a lot of the other teams that

have played Wallan have got them outright, and that we need to take the opportunities when they’re there,” Wadden said on Sunday.

“Yesterday everything went to plan. We won the toss and the boys bowled really well and got them out before we got the runs we wanted to get.”

At stumps on day one, Wallan was 4-11 in its second innings still trailing the Bombers by 58 runs. Wadden said they considered batting for longer aer a poor performance with the bat the week before against Sunbury United.

e Bombers declared at 5-120 against Wallan.

“Last week we bowled well [against Sunbury United] but our batting let us down,” Wadden said. “We thought about batting longer, but the position on the ladder is more important.

“ere’s still another three games to go, so there’s no need to panic, and Sunbury United are a good side,” he said.

“We need to work on a few things, but we know if we bat our 80 overs out in a two-day game we will win most of the time.”

Gisborne is also in a good position heading

into day two of its game with Romsey. e Dragons will resume at 0-19, needing 111 for the win. Darcy Nolan was the star with the ball for the Dragons taking 5-27.

Daniel Heaney fell seven runs short of a century against Sunbury United. Heaney was the backbone of Woodend’s innings of 259.

United captain-coach James Hughes took 7-74. Sunbury will resume at 1-13 against Bacchus Marsh chasing 187.

Jason McGann took 4-39 and Jason Elliott took 3-40 for Sunbury.

East Sunbury and Rupertswood’s match is evenly placed aer the rst day of their clash in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition.

For a rising East Sunbury, entering the game two points behind third-placed St Anthonys, taking on the competition leaders provides a litmus test of where the side is at.

e under got o to a perfect start, dismissing Rupertswood opener Bruce Marshall for a duck, aer Rupertswood had elected to bat.

Rupertswood then steadied through coach Patrick Tyler and Hayden Ross, who formed the biggest partnership of the innings: 70.

Once Ross fell for 34, the wickets started to tumble for Rupertswood.

Tyler was out for 44 with his team in sight of 100. Some late-order hitting from Logan Gray pushed the score to 180.

Jessy Carroll was again among the wickets for the under, taking 3-41.

East Sunbury will start its innings on day two.

Macedon looks set to stay in the top four, with victory in sight at stumps on day one of its clash with Bacchus Marsh.

Sending Bacchus Marsh in proved the right decision as Macedon dismissed its opponent for 92. Patrick Trotta was tight with his bowling, taking 5-11 o 7.2 overs, while Tim Dawe grabbed 4-26.

Daniel Trotta then came out ring with the bat and will resume at 54, as Macedon nished the day at 1-73.

Asheld has already secured rst innings points against Sunbury United, which was bowled out for a miserly 63, with Aaron Wright the only batsmen to get going.

Asheld reached its target with two wickets down and will resume at 2-65 with an eye on outright points as it pushes for the top four.

Diggers Rest Bulla, also looking to join that echelon, put in a better batting performance against St Anthonys.

Having struggled in recent rounds, Diggers Rest Bulla made 213, Lincoln Grant top-scoring with 47.

In C-grade, Lanceeld’s good form continued, with the ladder leaders securing rst innings points against Woodend on day one.

e battle for second, third and fourth in the Central Highlands Bowls division is getting extremely tight, with only 18 points separating ve teams.

Woodend is 15 points clear on top of the ladder, while Gisborne and Trentham are out of the running for nals.

In the middle of the table, Lanceeld, Bacchus Marsh, Romsey, Kyneton Golf and Kyneton are in a ve-way battle for second through to sixth.

Lanceeld cemented its spot in second on the ladder with a 16 (121)-2 (73) win over winless Trentham.

Kyneton Golf sits third on 112 points aer a 14 (104)-4 (96) loss to Kyneton, still 11 points clear of its cross-town rival.

Kyneton’s win has them in fourth place on 101 points, just ahead of Romsey and Bacchus Marsh.

Romsey had a 16 (116)-2 (59) win over Gisborne to sit two points outside the top four.

Bacchus Marsh slipped outside the top four with a loss to Woodend. Aer splitting the rst rink, Woodend took the points in the other three rinks, winning 17 (114) to 1 (89).

Meanwhile, Sunbury cemented second spot in the Victorian Metropolitan pennant division 2, section 1, although it wasn’t easy against bottom-placed Hoppers Crossing.

Sunbury was 10 shots down halfway through the match before Mark and Elise Cowan turned their games around to win their rinks, while Eric Taylor was in control of his from the start.

Sunbury won 16 (91) to 2 (66) and is 10 points behind Flemington/Kensington, which it faces this week.

Sunbury’s second side also won, beating Keilor (2) 14 (93)-4 (76) to sit fourth on the ladder. Woodend, including Rick ‘Bubba’ Seymour, is 15 points clear on top of the ladder. (Damian Visentini)

GolfAnthony Lakey and Michael McCarton won the Romsey Golf Club’s 4BBB stroke event on Saturday. In a format rarely played at the club, many produced excellent results on fairways that were hard despite the week’s rain. There was virtually no wind and with the rough well under control, players didn’t need to search long to nd errant shots. Lakey and McCarton won 86/24.5/61.5 from Scott Williams/Steve Poulton – 90/27.5/62.

29 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 20, 2015

e Sunbury Kangaroos’ hopes of elding an A-grade netball side in the Riddell District Football Netball League have received a setback with the coach set to lead the side pulling out.

e club failed to eld a team last year and is determined to eld one in 2015 to avoid being ned.

Netball director Val Engellener said they had lined up a coach who had said she was going to bring some players with her.

“I messaged her this morning and she said due to work commitments and spending time with her child she wouldn’t be taking on the role,” Engellener said last Monday.

“It’s devastating for us. We have to eld a team this season otherwise our club gets ned double the amount that we did last season.

“As for the players she said were coming to the club, I’m unsure at this point what is going on there.”

e club has the numbers to have sides in the other three grades, but it can only use lower-grade players in A-grade as a stop-gap measure.

“Most of the B-grade girls can step up into A-grade, but they can only play six games each,” Engellener said.

“I will speak to Kim Bailey [AFL Goldelds netball manager] and see what we can do.”

In the meantime, the club is on the hunt for a coach and A-grade players.

“We’re aer someone who is a good leader and someone players can listen to,” Engellener said.

“We want someone with some experience and if they haven’t got a coach’s certicate the club will be happy to put them through the course.

“With the players, we are happy at this stage with anyone who wants to play in A-grade. With so many teams in Sunbury, it’s hard to get people from in the town so we are happy if people want to travel from outside the area,” she said. “You don’t have to have A-grade experience, but a few players with that experience would be very good.”

e club resumed training last week.

Kangaroos on the hunt for new coach

Riddell’s rep coach makes nals berth central focusFinals are on the agenda for the Riddell District Netball League open side in the Central Highlands RSL competition.

New coach Di McCormack says she’s condent the squad, which nished runner-up last season, will be in the nals mix in the six-week competition against other local netball leagues.

McCormack, who coaches Rupertswood in the RDNL, was a late appointment to the role aer Melton Centrals goaler Renee Hulls had to pull out due to other netball commitments, including being named in the Australian 30-plus indoor netball team.

“I initially didn’t apply for the role as it clashed with my Victorian Netball League commitments,” McCormack said.

“When Renee pulled out, the league contacted me about it.

“I called the Saints [Southern Saints] and they were 100 per cent behind me taking on the role.

“I can miss training to take on this job and it’s something I wanted to do.

“I’ve spoken to a few players who I haven’t coached before and they’re happy to have me on board.”

Joining McCormack on the sidelines is Katie Clarke, who played in the RSL competition last year.

Clarke has been named assistant coach.McCormack says a lot of the team’s players

are from the clubs that nished on the top half of the RDNL ladder last season.

“We have an experienced goal end with Yasmin McGregor and Christine Harris, both from Riddell, while Wallan’s Kate Bishop will provide support in her rst year in the team,” she said.

“In mid-court, we’re very fast. e league promoted Ailish [McCormack] into the senior side from the under-17s … it will help her develop.”

McCormack thinks defence is the side’s strongest asset.

“Emma Grant, Tess Lenaghan, Emma Wright and Jess Dominko are all really strong,” she said.

At Rupertswood, Dominko and Wright lead the signings for the 2015 season.

“Katie [Clarke] is having a baby but will still coach the under-19 side,” McCormack said.

“We will have a whole new line-up with younger girls to continue developing.

“We also won’t have Stacey Northey, who is having an operation on her knee.

“We might get her back near the end of the season, but we have players who can cover for her.”

As the Calder Cannons celebrate 20 years in the TAC Cup, the list of players who have represented the club makes interesting reading.

Dane Swan, Jude Bolton, James Kelly and Paul Chapman are among those who spring to mind and all are likely to be named in the club’s team of the past 20 years at a hall of fame dinner on January 31.

For two-time AFL premiership player and the club’s rst AFL draee, Darren Milburn, joining the Cannons was a leap into the unknown.

“Being the rst year in, everyone was unsure how it would work,” Milburn said.

“We trained out at the showgrounds … it wasn’t the ideal set up, but we made it with what we had.

“For a country kid from Kilmore, it meant playing against the top players and trying to learn and adapt and ultimately get draed.

“I only spent one year at the club, but I’m grateful for what people did for me. It was a great stepping stone.”

Milburn said there wasn’t a standout in that inaugural Cannons line-up.

“It was a good side and anyone could have been draed rst,” he said.

“Ashley Fernee went to Adelaide and David Round went as a father-son pick [to Footscray]. It makes me feel old [that it’s 20 years ago].”

Milburn is these days coaching players who have come from the Cannons in his role as an assistant coach at Adelaide. ey include one of the latest draees, Jake Lever.

“It’s a great system and has developed over the past 20 years to be a great set up,” he said

ey may have been at the club 20 years apart, but current Cannons player Mark Kovacevic is just as grateful as Milburn for his time at the club.

“It has been a whirlwind and it feels like I joined yesterday,” Kovasevic said.

“It’s great at providing a platform for football and for life. I didn’t know what to expect … it was a lot more professional than whatI expected.”

With many of his friends draed, Kovacevic was given the opportunity to play a third year at the club.

He said the idea of returning to the Cannons as a 19-year-old was very appealing.

“It was a very quick decision to make,” he said. “It’s a privilege to be part of the Cannons.”

e hall of fame function, at which the club will induct its inaugural hall of fame members, will be held at the Victory Room at Etihad Stadium on January 31.

Tickets cost $100 for a three-course mealand drinks.
