Pro-split supporters believe the state government will have broken a promise if Sunbury is still part of Hume aer July 1.

Sunbury Ratepayers Association president Bernie O’Farrell said Sunbury City Council was supposed to come into existence on that date and the community would feel let down if it didn’t.

Labor, which promised not to wind back the order gazetted by the former state government last October, launched a review of the secession process late last year.

As reported by Star Weekly online, Hume Star Weekly online, Hume Star Weekly

Hume split still in limbocouncil last week raised signicant concerns about the July 1 deadline.

Mr O’Farrell said people had been promised an independent Sunbury.

‘‘If it doesn’t happen, then as far as I’m concerned that is a broken promise,’’ he said.

With less than 110 days remaining until July1, Hume chief executive Domenic Isola last week wrote to Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins, again outlining the council’s fears about potential disruption to sta and implications for ratepayers.

e council did not request an extension of the proposed start date as has been reported by other media outlets.

In the letter, Mr Isola said a range of operational and legal matters had to be resolved.

‘‘I do not believe this provides sucient time to undertake this signicant process in a respectful, open, transparent manner for ratepayers and council sta,’’ the letter said of the impending deadline.

Macedon Ranges council has vowed to consult the community about any plans to maximise revenue to fund the maintenance needs of Hanging Rock Reserve.

As reported by Star Weekly, the Heritage Council announced on March 6 that Hanging Rock Reserve was of cultural signicance and warranted inclusion on the heritage register.

But it ruled that the eastern paddock, where a series of concerts have been held, should not be included.

As a result of the decision, Macedon Ranges council must seek a permit from Heritage Victoria for any works at the reserve outside of exemptions included in the listing.

e exemptions will allow landscaping, events that won’t aect structures and features, and maintenance to roads and buildings.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the council was condent it would be able to tend to these needs without having to go back to Heritage Victoria for approval of every project.

But she said securing ongoing funding for Hanging Rock remained a challenge.

She said that while the Rock earned its keep, infrastructure around the reserve such as tables, toilets and other buildings needed improvement.

‘‘A lot of that infrastructure is getting very old,’’ Cr Anderson said.

‘‘Pests and weed control are also a huge ongoing cost.’’

In May last year, the council abandoned

plans to seek investment at Hanging Rock aer the previous state government announced a $1 million maintenance fund, provided over four years.

Cr Anderson stressed there were no existing plans for development.

‘‘But if anything was to be put on the table, there would be very early community input,’’ she said.

Hanging Rock Action Group spokesman Hilary Roberts said residents had long called for greater consultation.

He said repeated requests for a local Landcare representative to be appointed to the Rock’s advisory committee had been denied.

Mr Roberts said the funding agreement with the state government stated that the council must do something to protect the eastern paddock from inappropriate development.

‘‘We’re condent we will get action at the state level,’’ he said. ‘‘We have absolutely no faith in council.’’

e council is working on an environmental management plan to guide environmental and conservation works at the reserve and eastern paddock.

Lanceeld’s Kerry Hammond is among the campers who will get a close-up look at Hanging Rock by moonlight this weekend.

A limited number of people will be able to set up tents on the lawns beneath the famous landmark from 4pm on Saturday.

SES volunteers will provide a night-time sausage sizzle, while a bacon and egg breakfast will be available for a small fee.

Ms Hammond, who is taking her two children and some of their friends, says they are looking forward to a guided night walk.

‘‘Hanging Rock always has that mysterious feel about it,’’ she says.

Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson says the annual event is a great chance to join the few people to have spent a night at the magical location.

‘‘On a night walk last year I was lucky enough to spot a boobook owl,’’ Cr Anderson says.

‘‘It was such an amazing experience to be under the stars, looking for native animals.’’

Booking is essential. Cost: $21 adults, $12.50 per child and $54 per family.

A Malmsbury writer whose debut novel combines environmental issues with themes of family, loss and loyalty, fears too many people are still ignoring the threat posed by climate change.

Alice Robinson, who lives on a rural property with her partner and two children, believes Australia, with bushres and droughts of increasing severity, is “the canary in the coalmine” but most political leaders aren’t heeding the warning.

Anchor Point, part of an emerging genre known as climate ction, was released earlier this month.

Robinson says that while most cli- novels are set aer an environmental disaster, her book is set in the near future and reaches back to the 1990s.

‘‘I was interested in exploring what’s

going on right now … how these things are understood, but there’s little serious action, particularly from our leaders,’’ she says. ‘‘It frightens me, especially having young kids.’’

Robinson, who lectures in creative writing, says Anchor Point has its origins in a theme Anchor Point has its origins in a theme Anchor Pointrather than a character.

‘‘Oen people have an idea for a character and it all goes from there,” she said. “e whole writing process took a while because I was working inside-out in a sense.’’

A petition has been drawn up as residents ght plans for a private P-12 school at the end of a narrow rural road in Diggers Rest.

Duncans Lane resident Laurie Pincini said an increasing number of people were alarmed at an application for a 520-student school and on-site childcare lodged with Hume council.

He said the six-hectare site, on green wedge land, was not suitable for a school.

Mr Pincini, who recently met with almost 60 people opposed to the application, said a petition would be created following a second meeting last ursday night.

He claimed the planning application was full of holes, with some neighbouring properties le o maps.

‘‘ey’re trying to paint a picture that this area is not rural lifestyle, that it’s industrial,’’ he said.

Mr Pincini said he also had problems with the scope of the project.

‘‘e only part of the [area] they’re not wanting to cover is where they want to have sport,’’ he said.

He said potential trac and sewage issues could negatively aect other properties in the area.

‘‘Duncans Lane is a typical country road,’’

Backlash over new school bid

Mr Pincini said. ‘‘And every property owner we’ve spoken to has photos of water running across their land.’’

e application by e Planning Group, on behalf of Design Core Architects, was lodged in August last year.

A proposed kindergarten was removed from an amended proposal received in early February and the applicant also revised

plans to accommodate fewer students than originally planned.

e application also outlines plans to deal with stormwater, carparking and trac requirements.

It does not list a religious denomination for the proposed school.

Council sustainability director Kelvin Walsh said the site was not subject to any overlays.

He said the application was still being advertised and no decision would be made before a planning committee meeting on Tuesday.

The cyclist you are about to pass could be your neighbour; someone’s mother, father, grandparent, child and someone’s friend. Cyclists are vulnerable road users, when intending to pass wait a few seconds until oncoming traffic has passed. When safe, move into the next lane and pass as if passing another vehicle. Cyclists ride around 20 to 30kph so allow plenty of room when pulling in.

We all want to get home safely to our families. Please pass our cyclists with care.

Parents are being encouraged to take advantage of vacancies at a not-for-prot childcare service in Sunbury.

Goonawarra Neighbourhood House manager Alna Sinatra said there were several spots available in the organisation’s activity group for three-year-olds and occasional childcare program.

e three-year-old group, Busy Bees, provides a structured program to foster developmental learning from 9am-noon on Mondays.

e occasional-care service, with three-hour sessions on Wednesday mornings and aernoons and Friday mornings, gives stay-at- home parents the chance to do their shopping, attend appointments or study.

Ms Sinatra said the programs, which have been running for close to 20 years, were open

to children from Sunbury, Goonawarra and surrounding areas.

She said the groups were staed by professionals and provided age-appropriate activities to encourage creativity and independence.

‘‘ere’s plenty of social interaction with other children, which is so crucial for development,” she said.

‘‘One of the big dierences with us is that, with no more than 13 children, they get plenty of love and attention.’’

Care spots up for grabs

By Matt Crossman

Sunbury health experts and police have welcomed plans to curb the harm being caused by increasing use of crystal methamphetamine (ice), describing them as a positive rst step.

A total of $500,000 will be provided to help community groups combat the use of ice as part of a $45.5 million state government package announced last week.

Sunbury police sergeant John Letchford said ice was a ‘‘hideous’’ drug that was ruining local lives. He said its use was widespread and had a ow-on eect to assaults, burglaries and other crime.

and manufacturers. Landlords who allow manufacturing or dealing on their premises will also be punished.

Sergeant Letchford said the speed with which ice had spread throughout communities was shocking.

‘‘In all my years policing, I’ve never seen such a take-up of a particular drug,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s huge … and it’s oen among people

‘‘We’re coming across it more and more,’’ Sergeant Letchford said.

‘‘It’s a regrettable scourge on our society that this drug is being pushed to the limits to which it’s currently available.’’

e government will also invest $18 million to expand drug and rehabilitation services and $4.7 million to help people identify users and direct them to services.

A dedicated ice helpline will be set up.Victoria Police will receive $15 million for

new drug and booze buses and $4.5 million to target drug labs.

e government has promised to introduce tougher laws to crack down on ice dealers

whom you’d normally expect to show more sense.’’

Lyn Morgain, chief executive of community health provider cohealth, said the government plan focusing on harm minimisation was welcome.

She said cohealth, which has services in Sunbury, was pleased the government recognised that drug use was a complex issue.

Sunbury Labor MP Josh Bull said the plan would support families, treat users and make communities safer.

‘‘We’re providing $500,000 to community groups to develop a solution for our area, because locals know best,’’ Mr Bull said.

Road deathA 44 year-old Kyneton woman has died in hospital after a crash in Edgecombe. She travelling north on Kyneton-Redesdale Road when the car she was driving crashed into a tree about 2.50pm on Friday. She was taken to hospital with critical injuries and died the next day.

Rubbish survey An audit has revealed most Macedon Ranges residents are doing the right thing on bin nights. The contents of 600 bins in Gisborne, Woodend and Kyneton were inspected by Macedon Ranges council in December last year. Only one per cent of green-waste bins inspected contained the wrong materials and 16per cent of garbage bins contained recyclable materials.

Kids to have their sayA youth advisory committee is being set up to give Sunbury young people the chance to have a say on issues important to them. Sunbury MP and former maths and science teacher Josh Bull has written to Sunbury’s four secondary school principals seeking suitable nominees.

Art show back in vogueOrganisers of the Woodend Lions Art Show say new life has been breathed into the long-running event. More than 74 works were sold and $10,000 raised at the show, the rst held in partnership with the Macedon Ranges Art Trail. The 40th annual event followed the cancellation of last year’s show due to a lack of entries.

Women who love to sing are being invited to join a popular Sunbury-based pop choir.

e Divine Divas of Sunbury are seeking new members as they prepare to take their act to some of the best concert halls in Australia.

e award-winning group, which rehearses at the Salvation Army hall in Anderson Road on ursday nights during school terms, has singers from across the metropolitan area.

‘‘Our current membership is 40, but there’s no upper limit,’’ director Adam Przewlocki says.

He says members don’t need to be like Joan Sutherland and won’t be required to sing solo.

‘‘e main thing is that they have a passion for singing and are able to hold a tune,’’ he says.

e choir performs a broad range of songs, from hits by Adele through to Fleetwood Mac, Annie Lennox and Marcia Hines.

One of the things that sets the Divas apart is their use of choreography.

‘‘With us, what you see is a full theatrical performance,’’ Mr Przewlocki says.

e Divas will perform at Deakin Edge in Melbourne’s Federation Square from 3pm this Saturday.

For tickets to the Divas’ Federation Square show, visit tix.yt/divasandthecity.

Waspish review [Re: Ranges abuzz over wasp threat, Star Weekly, March 10] They’re ridiculous at Weekly, March 10] They’re ridiculous at Weeklythe Gisborne park, too. Went for dinner in the park with the kids and we had about 30 of them ying around us in a matter of minutes.

Azza McGregor, via Facebook

Be careful heading eastAs an occasional recreational cyclist and a regular driver, I’m very concerned about the safety of cyclists on some of our local roads. At this time of year, while driving eastwards on Ashbourne Road, Woodend, around 8.30am there are a couple of spots where a driver is blinded by the sun. I must admit to holding my breath for the few seconds it takes to regain a clear view of the road. For those unfamiliar with this road, the speed limit on this section is 70 km/h. There is only one lane in each

direction and there are no visible shoulders on the road. Because of this, cyclists understandably ride in the one and only trafc lane. So you can imagine my shock when I came upon a cyclist ahead of me as I drove through the blind spot this morning. If I’d been a few seconds earlier I’d have collided with the cyclist. As it was, we were both fortunate there was no trafc coming in the other direction, so I was able to pull out partially onto the other side of the road to avoid her. There’s a footpath in this section of the road, so it seems to me a much safer option for this to be a shared path. In fact, I suggest cyclists should always use shared paths instead of roads wherever possible.

Pauline Brown, Woodend

Greyhounds are softies[Re: Sunbury greyhound owner seeks change in muzzling laws, online, March9] Breed-specic legislation is ridiculous. Muzzling an entire breed is ridiculous. It comes down to responsible dog ownership. Any dog can cause harm if not handled correctly. I own an ex-racing greyhound which, potentially, may have been ‘blooded’. She sleeps with kids on the bed and I have no fear of what she supposedly could do. It’s the most gentle breed I know.

In this column we will discuss the first and last impression a buyer will have of your home?the exterior.

Your efforts to create an inviting and cared for exterior will be well rewarded by greater buyer interest.

First up, check on the exterior paint and stain work, including the window frames, eaves, etc. It should

be in perfect condition, and if repainting is necessary, stick to neutral shades, as these will appeal to a

wider variety of tastes. Then clean out the garage and sheds, and remove any loose or unwanted items

such as toys and garden implements. Mow the lawns, trim hedges and shrubs, weed garden beds and

sweep paths. Neat lawn edges can do wonders for a cared-for impression, as can garden beds filled with

flowers in season. Ensure that any barbecue area is clean, and then concentrate on the appearance of

your lawn. It is relatively cheap and easy to feed your lawn prior to listing your home, and within two or

three weeks, the lush green growth will really lift the appearance

of your home. If you have a pool, remember it is a focal selling point of your property. It is essential that

it is sparkling clean, and algae free. If you are interested in a sale, purchase or letting feel free to contact

me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 or call into our friendly offices at Gisborne and Sunbury for a chat.

One of the original hill station properties in the heart of Mount Macedon village, ‘Timsbury’ is home to a grand old lady of circa 1875 vintage with her nery intact but now with a gleaming, contemporary heart.

An example of American gingerbread architecture, the house has huge rooms with the mid-Victorian aesthetic on glorious show but they now couple with a classy transformation in kitchen, laundry and informal living areas. It’s given the place a new lease on life, one that takes into account modern comforts, and has lifted the appeal factor considerably.

Beyond a deep verandah, the wide entry hallway shows off the rst of many chandeliers while on the left, double

doors usher in the formal dining room with original Baltic oorboards, a deep box-bay window and a replace with richly ornate mantel and surround. Another set of doors opposite open to a carpeted lounge room with an amazing ceiling, a Cheminees Philippe replace and a huge picture window taking in garden and Mount Towrong views.

The vast main bedroom is next, with a marble replace surround, an extravagant tted dressing room, and charming en suite with dual vanity basins, a big bathtub – and a chandelier. Another (guest) bedroom nearer the back has a replace and an ensuite and, across the way, there’s the new laundry with stone benches and a stack of storage.

Flanked by a meals area with french doors to side verandah and great (new) family room with wood heater under a marble surround, the kitchen is as today as the servants’ bells are yesterday. With vaulted ceiling, a bank of skylights and brush box oorboards, it’s all a-gleam with white 2pac soft-close cabinetry, island bench topped with Caesarstone, walk-in pantry (stone bench) and concealed dishwasher, 900mm induction cooktop, integrated convection microwave and wall oven all sporting the AEG label.

Up a staircase with the lovely patina of age, there’s a bathroom half-way up and, off the top landing, three huge bedrooms, a study (or sixth bedroom), a box room and a play room. Two bedrooms have robes

and marble replace surrounds, one has an ornate wooden mantelpiece and each has balcony access via a step-through window.

Surrounding gardens on the block of about 1.86 hectares are magnicent. Fern-lined Willimigongong Creek is at the bottom, there’s a wisteria walk, a bank of giant rhododendrons, an orchard, box hedge-lined terraced walkways and stunning exotics such as a copper beech, Chinese pistachio and a massive oak forming the centrepiece of a sweeping front lawn.

Hydronic heating, a cellar, water tanks, irrigation system, chook pen, freestanding garage, four parking bays and electric entry gates are Timsbury’s other treats.

33 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 17, 2015

SPORT

By Liam Twomey

A stunning bowling performance from Jason McGann has propelled Sunbury into the Gisborne District Cricket Association senior grand nal.

With the new ball in hand, McGann was a one-man wrecking crew on Saturday aer Woodend won the toss and batted rst in the McIntyre Cup semi-nal.

e speedster removed six of Woodend’s top seven batsmen.

Woodend slipped to 8-64 before the mid- order’s Warren Else tried desperately to li the score to three gures.

With some help from the tail, Else added 30, but Woodend was bowled out for a meagre 96 in the 45th over, McGann nishing with 6-28.

Sunbury secretary Marty Kelders said McGann was outstanding.

“He was quite devastating,” Kelders said. “All the clubs know about him. ey all try to keep him out, but in the last month he’s put in some extra tness work and really struck form. He sets up the lead for the team to follow.”

McGann wasn’t the only one making a brilliant individual eort.

With the job of progressing to the grand nal only half done, Sunbury opening batsman Jack Landt stepped up with 113 not out to guide his side to victory with the loss of just two wickets.

“It was a very mature innings from Jack – he’s really come of age,” Kelders said.

“It is great to see a young bloke go through the juniors and be opening the batting in the senior team.

“For him to make a hundred in a semi-nal … it doesn’t get any better than that.”

Landt was well supported by Jacob Brewer, with an impressive 57.

Playing o in the biggest game of the year seemed almost an impossible dream for Sunbury when it was 1-6 aer seven rounds.

But a dominant second half of 2014-15 has the club just one win from a premiership.

Sunbury will take on Sunbury United in the grand nal aer United rolled Riddell in the competition’s other semi-nal.

“e guys feel really good at the moment,” Kelders said.

“ey know they have to perform at their best to beat these other teams.

“United are a very even team. We played them two years ago in the grand nal and they are certainly a formidable outt.”

Cup grand nal doubles up as Derby DayIt will be an all-Sunbury aair in this year’s Gisborne Cricket Association McIntyre Cup grand nal.

Sunbury United ensured it would meet Sunbury in the decider by scoring a nail-biting 15-run win over Riddell at the weekend.

Batting rst on day one, Dylan Wright did all he could to ensure United got o to the best possible start.

Wright went to the crease at number six with the score at 4-33 and smashed 94 to help li his side to 190 all out.

United captain James Hughes said it was a great performance.

“at’s the best Dylan has batted and that [No.6] is his spot,” he said.

“He was an opener but I just gured that he was better o suited with our team in the middle order. His last two knocks have been really good.”

Despite losing wickets regularly, United continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over

thanks to handy contributions from Hughes (18) and No.11 Peter Jaeger (17no). Together with Wright, that pair helped li the score to respectability before the United innings came to an end in the 52nd over.

Heath Wadden was exceptional for Riddell, the opening bowler taking 7-59 from 20 overs, and he was well supported by Matthew Livingstone with two.

Having runs on the board is always an advantage, though, and such proved the case for United.

“I thought the longer we could hang around with the bat, the more runs we would make, and the more runs we made the little bit more condent we got,” Hughes said.

“at put us in a good position. We thought anything near 200 was defendable.”

e Riddell run chase got o to a disastrous start following a triple strike with the ball.

e chasers lost 3-16 until the middle order’s Daniel Fisk (93) and James Nolan (25) helped

steady the run chase. But it wasn’t enough to undo the early damage as wickets continued to fall and Riddell fell eventually for 175 in the 69th over.

e result means this year’s grand nal will be contested by the teams that nished third (Sunbury United) and fourth aer the home-and-away season.

Sunbury and United last played in round nine, when Sunbury came out on top by 51 runs in a one-dayer.

e grand nal will be played over the next two weekends.

Sunbury o-season recruit Javari Williams scored 13 points on debut for the Jets in the opening Big V basketball match of the season.

But it wasn’t quite enough and Geelong Supercats came out 94-90 winners.

e Jets announced the signing of Williams last week and the American college graduate showed a lot of positive signs, winning seven rebounds and having two steals.

Williams studied at NCAA division two college Simon Fraser University before playing in China and the US.

He secured his rst professional contract with Christchurch Cougars in New Zealand’s national league in 2013.

Sunbury head coach Grant Spencer said both player and club were excited to be working together.

“He’s looking forward to the season and showcasing his talents to the Sunbury basketball community,” Spencer said.

“He’s grateful to be able to continue his professional basketball career in Australia and Sunbury and I’m extremely pleased to secure the services of someone like Javari.

“He’s a talented multi-position player who has high expectations on him to help deliver improved results for our division 1 men’s program in 2015.”

Williams is a strong athletic swingman who plays well above the rim and thrives on the physical aspects of the game.

He has been training with the Jets for the past couple of months and has impressed with his ability to provide a scoring punch, on the perimeter and in the post.

Williams’ talents and knowledge of playing in front of big crowds won’t just be reserved for the men’s team as he will also undertake coaching and mentoring roles with some of the rising stars of the Sunbury Basketball Association.

“He will not only be a presence on court as Javari will work closely with the boys of our junior rep program as well as being one of the coaches at the association’s state performance program and running local school clinics,” Spencer said.

East Sunbury caused arguably the upset of the season in a Gisborne District Cricket Association B-grade semi-nal at the weekend.

Taking on an all-conquering Rupertswood that nished atop the ladder with an 18-point margin, fourth-placed East Sunbury smashed its way to victory.

Batting rst, Easts made 9-256 on the back of a stunning century by opener Liam Sherlock.

In reply, Rupertswood had no answers, succumbing for a disappointing 145.

East Sunbury coach Mark Hourigan was full of praise for his young side.

“It’s been a long year, trying to get into the nals and having the faith in the younger kids,” he said.

“It’s been a challenge at times, but they keep backing up week aer week.

“e week before, we’d played Diggers Rest, who are one of the top sides in the competition, and were found wanting.

“But this week we took the chance to play our natural games and that worked for us with bat and ball.”

Also impressive with the bat was Jessy Carroll who made 46, while Brandon Nicholls contributed 28.

But the undoubted matchwinner was Sherlock.

“Liam has been a standout all year,” Hourigan said. “He faces the new ball every week. He learns from his mistakes and that has really held him in good stead all season.

“Anyone who makes a hundred in any nals match deserves a pat on the back and he was very impressive.”

East Sunbury will play Diggers Rest Bulla in the grand nal. East Sunbury’s Brandon Nicholls made a handy 28 in the GDCA B-grade semi-nals. (Shawn Smits)

Easts rocket into nalSoccerSunbury United continued its impressive run in the national FFA Cup soccer knockout tournament, accounting for Monbulk Rangers 3-2 in the fourth round at the weekend. United led 1-0 at half-time before both sides found the back of the net after the break. Then the class of Sunbury showed through and it secured its place in the fth round. In other round four matches, Melton Phoenix came up short against the Melbourne Knights, losing 4-1. The Phoenix threw everything they had at the Knights in the rst half and trailed by just one goal. But Melbourne showed its class after the break, scoring three times more.

GolfPlayers took to the Romsey Golf Course under clear skies and with a gentle southerly wind to play for a place in the quarter-nals of the Algie Mitchell Shield knockout competition. A number of players rose to the occasion but it was one of the club’s juniors, Michael McCarton, who took the honours on the day. He red 87 (23) 64, to win comfortably from Bob McLennan 80 (11) 69 and Steve Poulton 93 (24) 69. McLennan also won nearest the pin on the 15th, while Les Gaunt did the same on the 16th. The line-up for the shield quarter-nals is: Michael McCarton v Rob Rea, Peter Scanlon v Steve Wilkins, Steve Poulton v Andrew Laing and Bob McLennan v John Laing.
