    David and Sara Gormley-OBrien are making every inch of their Woodend property productive.

    As part of their belief that its important to have a relationship with the land, theyre turning their focus to bees.

    After having one hive for two years and their first honey harvest in February, the novice beekeepers are looking to capitalise on local knowledge.

    They are members of a bee club in Diggers Rest but want to start a group in Woodend.

    Mr Gormley-OBrien says theres a groundswell of desire in Woodend to promote beekeeping.

    Im looking forward to getting a group together and bringing in those who are experienced and know what theyre doing and able to share their knowledge, he said.

    Its a cross-generational thing. A lot of older people in their 70s who have been beekeeping all their lives to a certain extent are dying with all that knowledge and its not being handed on.

    On their one-acre (0.4-hectare) property, the Gormley-OBriens aim to be as sustainable as possible. Theyve become seasonally focused on growing fruit and vegetables and have a dexter cow, Megan, that provides manure, offspring and milk.

    Its part of our identity getting back to nature, Mr Gormley-OBrien said.

    He is encouraging bee enthusiasts to attend an inaugural Woodend beekeeping meeting on Sunday, August 24.

    The meeting will be held from 3pm at 294 Ashbourne Road, Woodend.

    A $1.35 million upgrade to a preschool centre in Sunbury has lifted the number of kindergarten places from 97 to 130.

    The refurbished Sunningdale Avenue childrens centre was officially opened last week by Wendy Lovell, the Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development.

    Hume councils director of city communities, Margarita Caddick, said more staff had been hired to accommodate the increase in kindergarten places because of the redevelopment. The creation of a second preschool room enabled more families to access a program, she said.

    In addition to a new preschool room and the redevelopment of day-care rooms, the upgrades include modern play areas, meeting spaces for educators and the ability to open the two up-to-three-year-old rooms to access alternative spaces.

    Ms Lovell said the opening was an important milestone for the community, and bringing childrens services together in one location made sense.

    The upgrade hasnt just improved the quality of facilities, its increased access to childrens services, including kindergarten, long-day care, maternal and child health, and playgroups, she said.

    The upgrade was jointly funded by Hume council, which contributed $1.05 million, and a state government injection of $300,000.

    Pupils at Killara Primary School have started planting their own orchard one tree at a time.

    The first tree, a plum, was planted by pupils Jake and Keisha last week.

    Teacher Robyn Smith said it was a vision of the school to have a productive orchard.

    Weve started with one fruit tree, but if we can get 20 that would be nice, she said.

    Im putting my hand up asking people if they have any trees we can have.

    The year 3-4s are involved and its an opportunity to introduce them to what nature can give us.

    They can watch the trees grow and,

    hopefully, produce fruit before they leave the school.

    The school is involved in Sustainability Victorias ResourceSmart Australian sustainable schools initiative. Pupils take on roles which include monitoring energy use; recycling paper, cardboard and plastics; and lunchtime walks to pick up rubbish.

    Killara has completed two of five tasks required to become a five-star sustainable school. About 200 trees and shrubs were planted at the school last month as part of National Schools Tree Planting Day.

    Patients in Sunbury and surrounding areas now have access to a more effective Computed Tomography scanning service thanks to upgraded technology at Lake Imaging.

    Practice manager Chris Proctor says demand for CT services is higher than ever.

    Since upgrading to our more efficient scanner in 2012, more than 10,000 local patients have taken advantage of this bulk-billed modality. Theres clearly a very real need in the Sunbury region for a local CT service.

    Our regions doctors have welcomed the high-end CT service by referring patients of all ages for scans of arteries, the brain, lungs, kidneys and other vital organs, along with skeletal structure and teeth.

    Before we introduced this service in Sunbury, patients had to travel outside the region to Melbourne, Ballarat or Bendigo for scans, Mr Proctor says. Having this local service is more convenient for patients and enables close relationships between local general practitioners and our on-site radiologists who devote much of their time to giving advice and feedback to the referring doctors.

    Lake Imaging radiologist Karen Fink says advanced scanning technologies like CT are a vital tool in early diagnosis, which can greatly improve medical outcomes. Dr Fink says the new scanners are quicker, safer, more user and patient-friendly than earlier machines. Patients referred to Lake Imaging Sunbury have access to this bulk-billed service; no fees are payable by patients. The community also benefits from considerable improvements in medical outcomes and lower medical and social costs made possible by early diagnosis.

    RECIPE \ BLACK PEARLS JOHN LEE HOOKER FLIP

    Fred Siggins was happy to share a recipe that has rarely appeared on the Black Pearl list. At Black Pearl we also love our flips. This is a style of cocktail shaken with a whole egg for a beautifully rich and fluffy texture. One of our originals is called the John Lee Hooker Flip after the song One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer. In a shaker, combine 30 millilitres of good bourbon, 30 millilitres of scotch, 10 millilitres of real maple syrup, a dash of Angostura bitters and a raw egg. Shake vigorously for 10 seconds with no ice to emulsify the egg, then add ice and shake again to chill. Strain into a beer mug and top with your favourite dark beer.

    Its the middle of winter and Im drinking chilled riesling when warming reds should be in my glass theres something terribly wrong with this picture.

    Wines a bit like fashion, and the wines well be drinking next season have already hit the shops.

    It means I end up tasting and drinking wines that are inappropriate for the current weather heavy reds in summer followed by whites and ros in the winter.

    Longing to know what the drinks of choice for the current cold weather are, I asked a brewer, bartender, winemaker and sommelier what theyve been enjoying.

    Not surprisingly, this Yarra Valley winemaker is drinking red wine.

    Im loving reds from southern Italy at the moment just the right sort of tannins for a hearty soup savoury reds without the fruit sweetness we see in many domestic wines. Any nerello from Etna hits the spot, or the more muscular wines from Puglia, the Hoddles Creek Estate winemaker says.

    Youd think the sommelier who curates an outstanding list of wines at Cutler & Co would

    nominate a wine as his go-to drink of the moment. But, refreshingly, OBrien, who also makes wine under the Vinero label from the Macedon Ranges, nominates a beer.

    Im quite hooked on Bridge Road Brewers Bling Bling IPA, OBrien says. Its straight out of the more ofanything? More of everything! school of brewing, but its everything that a thousand hopped-out, malted-up craft brews want to be and fail for one important reason: balance. My brain tells me I shouldnt like it but my mouth says, Shut up and enjoy the ride.

    You start drinking beers that are a bit darker in the winter, with higher alcohol less thirst-quenching beers, but ones with flavour, says Walker, head brewer at Geelongs Southern Bay Brewing Co. They go with richer foods, such as casseroles, and with dark beers such as stouts, they really come to life at warmer temperatures. Pour yourself a large glass, drink it slowly and their true characters come out.

    In the winter months, I tend to gravitate to simple whisky-based classics like the Bobby Burns. Its basically a scotch Manhattan (whisky, sweet vermouth and bitters) with a splash of DOM Bndictine for a bit of rich, herbal sweetness, says Siggins, who can be found mixing drinks at Fitzroys Black Pearl.
