Wildlife rescuers are fed up with small marsupials being killed or badly injured by domestic and feral cats and have called for curfews in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges.

Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network spokeswoman Fiona Corke said many hundreds of possums, lizards and phascogales could have been saved if cat owners were required to keep their moggies in at night.

She said research shows that cats kept indoors also tend to live longer, so it was time

Many Victorian councils have imposed night curfews for felines in recent years and there is growing pressure for others to follow suit.

More than 25 areas now have some kind of cat curfew. Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Ranges councils have implemented 24-hour curfews to keep cats at home at all times. e restrictions have the support of the RSPCA.

Macedon Ranges council assets and operations director Dale ornton said previous investigations did not indicate strong community support for such a move.

For the forseeable future, were taking

to restrict the nocturnal movement of felines. If all cats were kept inside at night, we could save so many animals, Ms Corke said.

I dont think theres any excuse for people not to keep their cats in at night. ey can live quite happily being indoors.

We see all the time that things like bells around their necks are just not very eective.

Other local animal welfare volunteers told Star Weekly they had come across many ring-tail possums and phascogales harmed by puncture wounds that had been inicted by cats.

a dierent tack, Mr ornton said. Enforcement like that is really only for when other avenues [such as encouraging responsible ownership] have failed.

Hume council acting city infrastructure director David Fricke said most cat complaints related to stray or feral cats.

Council is not currently considering the introduction of a cat curfew, but it encourages responsible pet ownership to avoid any potential impacts on native wildlife, he said.

A placid cat found wandering near Gisborne with shotgun pellets lodged in its shoulder has been adopted out aer recovering from surgery.

e domestic shorthair won many hearts at Tonys Practice, Woodend, but with his injuries healed, sta decided last week it was time for him to go to a forever home.

Toby was handed in to the practice by Macedon Ranges council sta in February aer being picked up walking through farmland.

e unregistered cat appeared to be in good health, but an examination found he was tender in one shoulder.

Veterinary nurse Anita Gaerth says X-rays revealed numerous shotgun pellet fragments embedded in his skin.

It looked like it hadnt happened recently; the wounds were completely healed, she says.

When he came in, he looked absolutely perfect and was happy, until we touched his shoulder.

Toby underwent surgery to have the pellets removed and repair bone damage.

Ms Gaerth says the sweet, relaxed cat, who loves human attention, has recovered well.

Hes such a casual cat. e sta here are very sad to see him go.

Council community safety manager Anne-Maree Lindner says residents should act humanely when dealing with nuisance cats. Traps can be hired from the council.

Cat trapping is the most humane method as it gives them a chance at being reunited with their owner or rehomed, Ms Lindner says.

ere are still a number of cats and kittens up for adoption for $160 through Tonys Practice.

All cats and kittens come vet-checked, desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and wormed.

e federal government has conrmed it will sell the Australian Emergency Management Institute site at Mount Macedon, raising fears of inappropriate development.

Parliamentary secretary Michael McCormack said the institute, set on three hectares of heritage gardens, would be put on the market aer the AEMI moves to a virtual model in July.

As reported by Star Weekly, the government announced last May that the 40-year-old institute, which oers a diploma of emergency management to public servants and members of the CFA and SES, would be restructured and moved to Canberra.

e government has said some of the centres 60 jobs would be relocated.

Mr McCormack said the sale would be subject to a deal ensuring ongoing access to parts of the site by Mount Macedon Golf Club and the Macedon Ranges Horticultural Society.

is decision balances the interests of the community with the Commonwealths priority of realising the value of surplus property assets, he said.

Federal Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters, who has campaigned for the AEMI site to remain open, said the decision was disappointing.

While I welcome the governments announcement that the golf club and horticultural society will be able to continue, the decision to close the facility is still a bad

one, she said, urging that Mount Macedon residents be consulted during the sale process.

People on the mountain care about who their neighbours are and the potentially inappropriate development of this iconic property, she said.

Former institute director Roger Jones last week said he feared the organisation would lose its ability to run courses that allowed people from various backgrounds to share experiences about emergency management.

Ms Chesters said the physical closure of the emergency management centre would be a massive blow to the public sectors capacity for disaster responses.

Golf club president Glenn Moore said arrangements to provide a 15-year lease with an option for another 15 years provided certainty for its 110 members. e club previously operated on a year-to-year lease.

Its absolutely brilliant its something weve been ghting for for many years, Mr Moore said.

A Macedon Ranges council decision to support a proposed all-abilities park for Romsey has been celebrated as a win for the community.

But purchase conditions on the preferred site for the Greater Romsey All Abilities Park remain under discussion, with councillors agreeing to lobby the state government for a better deal in its sale of the former Romsey Primary School site.

As reported by Star Weekly in March, Cr Russell Mowatt has foreshadowed a motion to rescind the councils May 2013 decision to buy the historic site, on the corner of Main Road and Palmer Street.

He successfully moved that the motion lie on the table, meaning it can be brought before council at a later date. Cr Mowatt withdrew his motion last Wednesday, allowing Cr Henry McLaughlin to table a motion declaring the councils support of the park plan.

Completion of the $352,000 sale has been held up by a condition requiring the council to release the government from claims relating to any site contamination.

To the best of the Education Departments knowledge, there has been no known contamination of the site.

Cr McLaughlin told last weeks meeting the governments clause placed unrealistic conditions on its sale.

e council and community need to negotiate hard on this with the state government, he said.

Worsening trac bottlenecks at Bulla have prompted renewed pleas for the long-awaited duplication of Sunbury Road, including a bypass of the town.

Complaining that planners have been caught napping as the population on Melbournes north-west fringe grows, motorists are calling on the state government to urgently prepare plans to improve trac ow and reduce crash risks on the undivided rural road, which is used by 26,000 vehicles a day.

Sunbury resident Colin Ellis, who has been using the road for almost 30 years, said something had to be done.

All these roads from growing communities like Sunbury, Diggers Rest, Romsey and Lanceeld to get to the airport, they all have to come through Bulla, he said. e infrastructure has not kept up at all. e bottlenecks at night are just a nightmare; it takes ages to get anywhere.

is has been going on for six or seven years and it only gets worse, he said.

Mr Ellis said an 80km/h speed limit introduced in February on the stretch of road between the Tullamarine Freeway and Wildwood Road had improved safety.

But it had also added to the time it takes motorists to get home, he said.

Duplication of Sunbury Road by 2021 was high on a wishlist released by Hume council in the lead-up to last Novembers state election.

e road has a history of bad crashes. VicRoads gures show there were 12 casualty crashes, including one fatality and seven serious injuries, in the ve years to June 30 last year.

    Bid to bust bottlenecks

Bulla residents Colin Ellis, Andrew Martin and Alison Martin met up with local MP Bernie Finn to discuss Bullas daily trafc bottleneck. (Shawn Smits)

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn told State Parliament the road was a mess. He said the duplication and bypass, proposed when John Cain was Premier more than 25 years ago, were long overdue.

I have seen deaths on Sunbury Road. Its quite dangerous and oen clogged in peak hour, Mr Finn said. e people of

north-west Melbourne have been well and truly patient enough.

A spokesman for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said there were no plans to duplicate Sunbury Road.

e speed limits on Sunbury Road were put in place to boost road safety. VicRoads will continue to monitor their eectiveness.

A Mia Mia couple who are using cannabis to treat their daughters severe epilepsy have welcomed the next step towards the legalisation of medical marijuana.

But while they have praised the state government for signing up to three clinical trials, David and Cherie OConnell are calling for the introduction of legal protection for families already using the drug to relieve pain and treat life-threatening conditions.

e government last week announced it would join with the New South Wales government and facilitate the trials.

Ms OConnell said their daughter Tara, 9, had up to several hundred seizures a day before she was rst given medical marijuana. She had just 10 on the rst day aer starting and has been seizure-free since April 2013.

e rst clinical medical marijuana trial, to involve 60-200 children with severe epilepsy, will start in mid-2016, with results expected within two to ve years. ose already being given medical marijuana will be unable to take part.

[e marijuana] has completely changed our lives, Ms OConnell said. She was having at least 10-20 seizures a day, which rendered her unconscious, and at least one a day that required oxygen treatment. In 2012, we had to resuscitate her eight times.

Ms OConnell said she knew of many families who were growing plants to make their own cannabis oil. Trials are great, but we need protection for those already using it, she said. ere are 35 or so families of minors using medicinal cannabis.

Ms OConnell said while some pundits questioned the possible long-term eects of medical marijuana use, their own experience

had been overwhelmingly positive. e long-term eect of us not using it would be death, she said, adding that Tara, who previously had medicine-induced anorexia, was now in the healthy weight range. Using medical marijuana has also helped Tara sleep.

eres been nothing but benets for us. e government has asked the Victorian Law Reform Commission for advice about changing laws so families can be protected. Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the trials would improve evidence around medical cannabis.

One hundred years to the day that the rst Anzacs leapt o boats and headed into battle at Gallipoli, many thousands of people stood in cold and silence to reect on those who paid the price for our freedoms.

As the nation continues to mark the centenary of the landing at Gallipoli, this years Anzac Day services in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges were among the largest ever staged.

On Saturday, about 5000 people gathered at Sunburys cenotaph for the towns rst ever dawn service.

A large crowd also lined streets for a traditional street march before a commemorative service later in the morning, where Hume mayor Adem Atmaca and members of the RSL planted a lone

pine, a descendant of the original lone pine in Gallipoli.

Cr Atmaca said the majestic tree symbolised the sacrices made by soldiers at the famous battle and would serve as a place to reect on the eorts of our servicemen and women.

Commemorations in Sunbury also featured a large display of local war stories, photographs and memorabilia compiled by volunteers.

More than 5000 people braved the cold for the Macedon Ranges largest dawn service at Mount Macedon, while smaller crowds paid their respects at services and marches in Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Kyneton, Lanceeld, Woodend, Trentham and Taradale.

Built with fussy buyers in mind, the property will be a temptation for downsizers, city escapees and investors who will subsequently attract premium tenants.

It already has the priceless advantage of a spot across the road from the Jacksons Hill estate wetland reserve, but this property presses home its edge by making the backyard a rather remarkable haven for relaxation and entertainment.

The sloping block has been beautifully terraced, with bluestone retainers at the front and a well-executed system of timber retainers dividing the backyard into four usable levels. The resultant amenity lifts the entire place to a new pegging of excellence.

Entry is into a tiled walkway, which goes past an open, carpeted lounge room with lace at the windows. The main bedroom opposite has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with dual vanity basins and a heat lamp. Two more bedrooms with wardrobes are down a carpeted hallway at the back, along with a separate toilet and main bathroom.

A multi-paned door at halls end opens to the kitchen and a family-meals zone with oor tiles and latte-toned roman blinds and access points to side and backyards. The kitchen has lots of

blonde-timber laminate cupboards topped with marble-look laminate, a pantry behind opaque-glass doors, dual-drawer dishwasher and Technika underbench oven and gas cooktop; the next-door laundry accesses the garage.

From the meals zone, a gabled pergola above brick paving (which extends to the back roller-door of the double garage) kicks off the outdoor journey to upper levels. The rst of these has brick steps bisecting timber decks one with a big spa nestled under an attractive gazebo. The third levels brick steps are anked by

There is a school of thought for auction bidders that says start boldly, giving it your next-to-last big shot.

This is in opposition to the start-slow and-go-cautiously school. Sounds crazy, doesnt it? Yet, there

is a logic in thinking bold. First of all, it may knock the wind out of other bidders sails. By the time

they figure out whats happening, the hammer may have sounded. Without the chance to warm up, the

opposition may simply never get started. There is also the risk that if the other party gets warmed up

first, the auction could rapidly move along before you, yourself, have your bearings. Then there is the

chance that the auction will not reach the reserve price. As the person making the strongest bid, you

will be given the first right to negotiate with the seller as soon as the bidding ceases. This may be the

most vulnerable time for the seller, for their position may harden with the passage of 24 hours. So your

chances of a compromise are greater.

Another idea is to attend some other auctions beforehand to get experience, preferably with the agent

selling the house you have in mind. This will give you a better idea of what you may encounter. You

should also have in mind your ideal price, what you could comfortably pay and your absolute maximum

price. This will give you the confidence to be a bold bidder. If you have an interest is in buying, selling or

leasing, or indeed just talking about real estate, feel free to contact me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 or

call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for a talk.
