Its just a hop, skip and jump away from Easter, and Jake (left) Seth and Chloe cant wait. The trio were practising their egg-hunting with help from the Easter Bunny last week ahead of Overnewton Castles specially-themed Easter high teas, to be held on April 1 and 8. Kids can enjoy an Easter egg hunt and a free jumping castle while adults sit back and nish off the petit fours. Overnewton Castle will also host a Mad Hatters Tea Party on Sunday, April 12, with appearances by the White Rabbit, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the Queen of Hearts, Alice and the Mad Hatter himself. e Furlong Road level crossing in St Albans could be removed at the same time as the Main Road level crossing in a new plan being considered by VicRoads.

VicRoads is running an online survey to better understand the thoughts and experiences of the people who live, work and use the Furlong Road level crossing as part of the state governments plan to remove Victorias 50 most dangerous level crossings in the next eight years.

Similar surveys are also being conducted for level crossings at McKinnon Road, McKinnon; Centre Road, Bentleigh; Heatherdale Road, Mitcham; Mountain Highway and Scoresby Road in Bayswater; and Heatherton, Corrigan and Chandler roads in Noble Park.

e transport authority has already committed to removing the St Albans Main Road crossing and three others across the state, with works starting on those removals this year.

e online surveys will help the state government prioritise funding and construction at the remaining 46 level crossing locations.

Bundling level-crossing removal projects, where they are in close proximity and located on the same rail line, could result in cost savings and reduce the impacts of construction on local communities and businesses and rail customers, the VicRoads website says.

is approach could allow local communities to realise the benets of level-crossing removal projects sooner.

    Meanwhile, a construction date for

the Melton Highway level crossing at Sydenham is also yet to be determined.

Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins said boom gates at the Melton Highway level crossing were down, on average, 52 minutes during both the two-hour morning and aernoon peak periods, with trac banking up up to ve kilometres down either side of the level crossing.

State Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan would not conrm or deny whether the Furlong Road level crossing would be removed in conjunction with the Main Road project, but St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman said the online survey was a positive rst step.

Ms Suleyman said the sooner the Furlong Road level crossing could be removed, the better.

It makes sense weve got two of the worst level crossings in Victoria, she said. eres only a couple of others that theyve started the consultation on, so for Furlong Road to be part of that is a very positive step.

I want to make sure that the community, residents and stakeholders have their say in relation to why its critical for Furlong Road level crossing to be removed. I encourage as many submissions as possible.

e survey will run until April 4.To have your say, go to http://bit.

is will complement recent investigations into allegations of excessive noise.

Another resident, Deby Sammut-Brown, said she and her husband were part of an Akzo Nobel community liaison committee for about 10 years.

ings have improved, but its never going to be perfect, Mrs Sammut-Brown said. e noise has improved and so has the smell but Ive become immune to it, which is really sad.

    By Priscilla Moca

Sunshine North residents say they have to pinch their noses most days because of a sickly sweet solvent smell from a McIntyre Road coatings factory.

Resident Amy Soyka said the smell from the Akzo Nobel site in Sunshine North was potent.

It gives you headaches and on days when its really strong it makes my chest hurt, she said.

It kind of smells like very sweet nail polish. I live on Stamford Avenue, so not as close as some, but I can still smell it.

Resident Paula Sorrell Wilson, who lives on nearby Cary Street, said she had reported the odour to the coatings manufacturer at least half a dozen times.

e odour is quite intolerable at times, permeating our home and aecting our enjoyment of being outdoors, Ms Sorrell Wilson said.

e Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has received 11 reports about the odour from the site this month.

EPAs investigation into the recent spike in reports will determine what has changed to cause the odours and whether the company

measure emissions from the site and a walk of neighbouring streets was conducted monthly.

We received notication from the EPA regarding local odour complaints on March 18, he said.

But he said a number of other businesses in the area used similar products.

e [Azko Nobel] site has done a number of things to reduce potential odour issues, from eliminating manufacture of some products, reducing emissions through engineering controls, improving site cleanliness and covering of vessels and closing of building to avoid fugitive emissions, he said.

A proposed new drug court in Sunshine has been given its second endorsement in six months, although the state government wont say if it will go ahead.

An evaluation of the Drug Court of Victoria commissioned by the Attorney- General recommended expanding the existing model to include Sunshine, Footscray, Melbournes CBD, Shepparton, Geelong, Ballarat and Mildura.

e Victorian Drug Court, based in Dandenong, is a division of the Magistrates Court of Victoria. It oversees the sentencing and supervision of oenders with a drug or alcohol dependency who have committed an oence while under the inuence of drugs or alcohol or to support a habit.

If introduced to Sunshine, the drug court would operate out of the existing Sunshine Magistrates Court.

Last September, a state government inquiry into the supply and use of methamphetamine, particularly the drug ice, recommended expanding the drug court of Victoria to include Sunshine, Melbourne, Geelong and Gippsland.

Niddrie MP Ben Carroll, a member of the law reform, drugs and crime prevention committee that ran the inquiry, said the Dandenong drug court had been a successful vehicle in keeping people out of prison by undertaking a two-year treatment program under a court order.

A spokesman for Attorney-General Martin Pakula welcomed the drug court evaluation but would not say whether the model would be expanded.

Braybrook nally has a library to call its own following construction of the $12.5 million Braybrook Community Hub.

e new hub, ocially opened last Wednesday, also includes a sports pavilion, learning centre and integrated early-years centre, as well as a caf, prayer room and spaces for community programs.

Health and support services are being delivered from the hub by cohealth.

e Braybrook hub took 15 months to build, with $9 million funding from Maribyrnong council and $3.5 million from the state government.

    Families and Children Minister Jenny

Mikakos joined Footscray MP Marsha omson and Maribyrnong mayor Nam Quach to ocially open the hub.

Ms Mikakos said the project ensured services had the space and exibility needed to deliver 15 hours of kindergarten alongside a range of other vital early-years programs.

is new centre will meet the demand for services and give Braybrook families the quality facilities and programs their kids deserve, she said. Bringing services together in a convenient one-stop community hub makes sense for families and children.

e hub, built in one of the states most disadvantaged areas, is also home to maternal

and child health services as well as a community garden, Mens Shed and public artwork.

It was constructed as part of the Revitalising Braybrook Action Plan, which aims to improve education, transport, employment and training in the area, as well as safety, housing and infrastructure.

Maribyrnong council has partnered with a number of government and community organisations in an eort to bring the areas infrastructure and services up to par with the rest of the municipality. For more details, visit www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au.

Brimbank locals have opened their hearts and wallets to help a Sunshine West single mother of two who has been told she has until the end of the year to live.

Sissy Keenan has spent 15 months battling an aggressive form of cervical cancer and was told last month that nothing more could be done.

e 34-year-old is spending what time she has le with daughter Maddison, 14, son Liam, 13, and mum Pat, who all live together in Ms Keenans childhood home.

Aer Ms Keenan has gone, Pat, a 62-year-old customer service ocer with Brimbank council, will care for her grandchildren.

Two of Pats colleagues, Robyn Xuereb and Emma Craddock, started an online fundraiser and are hoping to raise $200,000 so the Keenans can spend as much time together as possible.

More than $6500 had been raised through 89 donations when Star Weekly went to print. In Star Weekly went to print. In Star Weeklyaddition to that, a colleague raised $1000 from baking cupcakes and selling them to Brimbank council sta.

Meanwhile, a garage sale will be held at Sunhill Court, Ardeer, from 8.30am on April 18 and 19 with proceeds going to the Keenans.

And there will be a trivia night and silent auction at Sunshine Baseball Club from 6.30pm on May 29.

Ms Xuereb said the response so far was a reection of how something so sad could bring out the best in people. For information on the coming fundraisers or to donate, go to www.gofundme.com/Pat-Sissy.

WorkSafe will be shining a light on the safety practices of various industries across the west in a concerted eort to reduce workplace accidents.

Regional operations manager Melissa Battisti said WorkSafe would conduct targeted operations in food manufacturing plants, fabricated metal operations, the health-care sector, construction industry, retail, agriculture and transport and warehousing this year to improve health and safety at work.

Figures from WorkSafe reveal that 70

workplace incidents, including eight in the western suburbs, were reported between February 26 and March 11 this year.

Incidents included a gas line hit by an excavator in Taylors Lakes; a worker in Derrimut who sustained a laceration when the chisel he was using to repair a door slipped and hit his thumb; and a worker in Werribee who rolled his ankle when he stepped on some roof battens on the ground.

Workers in Brimbank made 3229 WorkSafe claims totalling $22 million between 2008 and 2014.

Ms Battisti said workplace safety was important to businesses, employees and

    New crackdown on work safety

their families, and employers needed to identify hazards, assess and implement safe work practices and provide the necessary equipment, training and supervision for employees to do their jobs safely.

Any injury is a tragedy, or very upsetting or painful for the people involved, she said.

Its vital we investigate those injuries so

we can prevent recurrences. Most injuries are preventable. With the growth of new businesses, employers spend a lot of time planning their business but must also consider how they plan to work safely.

ey should be eliminating risks by safe design, layout of equipment and making sure they purchase any safety devices that come with equipment.

We need to take care of our young workers, in particular the 15 to 24-year-olds.

ey may think theyre bulletproof, but we need to make sure we take the time to explain the hazards, and the controls, and then supervise them.

Employers . . . must consider how they plan to work safely - Melissa Battisti

Median house prices in Sunshine grew by a staggering 18.3 per cent to $520,000 in the year to September last year.

e Brimbank suburb was joined by Cairnlea, Derrimut and Deer Park as top performers across the west in the latest Victorian Property Sales Report, which reveals Melbournes house prices in suburbs with 10 or more sales.

Cairnleas median price climbed to $527,500 in September last year up 15.3 per cent from the year before, despite a decline in the September quarter.

In the outer north-west, median prices grew the most in Taylors Hill by 7.4 per cent to $523,500.

In Caroline Springs, the median price rose by 5.8 per cent to $455,000.

Sydenham grew the most of Brimbanks suburbs in the three months to September last year, with a 5.3 per cent increase bringing the median price to $416,000.

St Albans had the most house sales 305 for the year to September 2014; that was 4 per cent up on the previous year.

ere were also 111 units sold, at a median price of $307,400.

Bells Real Estate agent Robert Christakakis said the high number of sales in St Albans might be an overow from the huge uptake of people moving into Sunshine, where 101 houses were sold in the year to September.

People who are shopping around in one area might look at neighbouring suburbs

and buy there instead, Mr Christakakis said. St Albans has everything already there in terms of infrastructure, schools and shopping centres its established, as is the access to the city via the Western Ring Road.

Caroline Springs had the most property sales of Brimbanks neighbouring suburbs, with 389 sales in the 12 months to September.

In Caroline Springs, 42 units were sold in 2014 at a median price of $395,000 an increase of 13.7 per cent.

Mr Christakakis said the suburb was attracting a variety of buyers, ranging from investors to families.

Its oen about upsizing growing young families who need something bigger or people moving from Deer Park or Sunshine to a bigger place, he said.

Victorian valuer-general Robert Marsh said statewide house sales data for the quarter ending September last year indicated that the state median house sale price decreased by 3.4 per cent to $445,000.

He said metropolitan house prices fell by 5.4 per cent to $530,000 and regional Victoria house prices dropped by 3.3 per cent to $290,000.

A self-described crazy cat lady is hoping Brimbank residents leaving their feline friends behind when they head o for holidays will turn to the Cat Napping Suburban Retreat in Caroline Springs.

e cat-minding company is the brainchild of Ebony Centazzo, an avid animal enthusiast and former travel agent.

e Cat Napping facility has been open at its Eucumbene Drive location for a year. Ms Centazzo original started a cat retreat at Hoppers Crossing two years ago.

Our main vision is to give people peace of mind, the Point Cook resident said.

Twenty years ago, you wouldnt have much choice than to leave your cat in the care of

neighbours, but sometimes they act strangely or dont come home if youre not home.

e Caroline Springs retreat looks aer about 18 cats a week, and theres about 35 at Hoppers Crossing. But Ms Centazzo says this number can reach 55 at each centre during holiday periods such as Easter and Christmas.

We monitor their health the whole time. Weve even picked up on health conditions the owners hadnt, she said.

is is a dream come true for me, and I love coming to work each day.

Fiy Sunshine North properties have been tested for asbestos following last years discovery of a cancer cluster surrounding the former Wunderlich cement factory.

e Environment Protection Authority and Department of Health and Human Services have tested 50 properties within three kilometres of the factory site for asbestos bres in roof spaces, soil and air.

Results from 38 of the properties indicate a very low risk to householders, according to a state government update posted on the Brimbank council website.

Department spokesman Bram Alexander said results received so far showed very small amounts of non-respirable asbestos in the roof spaces of seven premises, while nine properties were found to have very small amounts of asbestos in their soil.

Each of these homes have been assessed by the expert environmental hygienists as safe to occupy, he said.

Mr Alexander said testing on the remaining 12 properties had just been completed.

A Victorian Cancer Registry report released in October revealed that between 2001 and 2013, 16 cases of mesothelioma were discovered originating within a two-kilometre radius of the former Wunderlich factory on McIntyre Road.

Anastasia Salamastrakis, of legal rm Slater and Gordon, said no new cases had been conrmed since the reports release.

e revival of the Brimbank Bicycle Education Centre has suered a setback aer thieves stole 10 bikes from its Keilor Downs site last week.

Senior Constable Matthew Le, of the Brimbank criminal investigation unit, said the oenders broke into the site some time between 6pm on Sunday, March 22, and 9am the following day by cutting the side fence.

ey then forced their way into the shed from which 10 bikes, including a red Gomier tricycle used by kids with disabilities, were taken.

A red tool box and some tools were also stolen.

Senior Constable Le said it was unclear how many people were involved in the break-in.

He appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

at area is isolated. ere were no cameras, its occurred overnight, so we dont have any witnesses at this stage, he said.

Were looking for any information from anyone who might have seen that tricycle or come across it.

Brimbank Central Rotary Club, Taylors Lakes Lions Club and Brimbank State Emergency Service have been working together since August last year in reviving the former Green Gully Trac Safety Centre.

ey are planning to spend about $40,000 in the next three years xing up the site.

Rebranded as the Brimbank Bicycle Education Centre, the facility provides bicycle and road-safety education for children aged three and older, including children with special needs.

Children from disability service Scope in St Albans use the centre every fortnight.

Bike thefts a hit to kids

Brimbank Central Rotary secretary David Bennett was furious about the break-in.

Its horrible, he said. e disabled groups really rely on those

tricycles, theyre specially built and worth

nearly $1000 each. Police are requesting that anyone with information on the break-in call the Brimbank criminal investigation unit on 9313 3333 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

A womens welfare service is celebrating the federal governments decision to extend homelessness funding for two more years.

In an Abbott government decision that ends a stando with the states, Womens Health West (WHW) will have its funding renewed under the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness (NPAH) when it runs out on June 30.

As part of the agreement, the Commonwealth will match the state governments contribution

Scott Morrison said the funding renewal announcement was made ahead of the May budget to give homelessness services more certainty. [We] will also be looking to put in place reporting arrangements with the states that ensure the eectiveness of service delivery in these critical areas, Mr Morrison said.

WHW is yet to receive funding details, but based on state government funding, it is believed to be about $357,000 under the Safe at Home program.

[We] have previously used these funds to create innovative local programs that divert

of about $23 million. WHW chief executive Robyn Gregory said the announcement was a great relief for domestic violence victims and meant current programs could continue.

While this extension is more limited than our request, the news gives our sta some security as well as the important promise of ongoing services for women and children over the weekend and in crisis, Dr Gregory said.

ankfully, the Victorian government had already pledged to its share of the funding for the next three years.

    Federal Minister for Social Services

women away from homelessness, Dr Gregory said. For example, we provided a 24/seven crisis response line that received a total of 6209 police referrals in 2013-14.

is gure reects a 54 per cent jump from the previous year (4025 referrals), and there have been 836 police referrals received in January this year alone.

[Were] funded to support 29 women to remain safely in their own homes, Dr Gregory said. is is a highly successful early intervention strategy to divert women and their children away from homelessness.

An Ardeer runner is keen to get Brimbank on the move and has started an exercise club for sprinters and snails alike aer a terrifying recent experience.

Lauren Sayer said the idea for the I Wanna Run Someday came from a desire for unity and safety in the area.

A few months ago I was followed by a man when I was running along Kororoit Creek, Mrs Sayer said.

Since then, even more so given recent events, Im not keen on running alone.

e Sunshine community was wonderful and everyone said theyd keep an eye out for anything suspicious and people even oered to run with me. Im committed to exercise, but now I only go on main roads or with my husband. at needs to change.

e Royal Childrens Hospital teacher and husband Andrew have raised almost $900 taking part in the fundraiser Run For e Kids.

Id love it if we could have a team from Sunshine next year, she said. I saw a lot of suburb teams and it was so great.

Im still not a runner, but Im getting there. For most of my life I was morbidly obese and aer gastric banding and hard work I went from a size 22 to a size eight, but I still couldnt run around the block. Its about so much more than just looking good.

Mrs Sayer said she wanted the group to support anyone wanting to get t, but she didnt want to join a strictly running club.

ere doesnt seem to be an in-between club, where you have people who would love to run but cant yet. I hope this can be it.

More details are at [email protected].

Whats your connection to Brimbank? As I worked with the Keilor council, which then became Brimbank council, for almost 42 years, I have seen it grow into a vibrant city. In the early years, a lot of Brimbank was only paddocks.

What do you like about the city?I love the fact it consists of many cultural backgrounds with its people living, on the whole, quite harmoniously. I love what they bring to our city, which is very vibrant because of it.

If you could change one thing about Brimbank, what would it be and why?Grati, I regard it as a lack of respect for other peoples property.

You recently retired from the city council aer more than 41 years. What roles did you hold over those four decades and what made you stay there so long?I started as a records clerk. Aer six months I transferred to nance and became a debtors clerk and a few years later I applied for a position in the rates department.

All of these positions were prior to the introduction of computers so every task was completed manually.

In the early 80s I applied for a position in the local laws area to set up and manage the recording of infringements and pets onto newly introduced computer soware.

MY BRIMBANKIf youre a Brimbank resident, chances are youve met Jeanette Bryden. e 61-year-old has worked at Brimbank council for more than four decades, including 20 years in customer service. Ms Bryden, who retired last month, tells Charlene Macaulay about her love of the area.

For my last 20 years of service I worked in the customer service department, rst as a customer service ocer and in the later years as a customer service enhancement ocer.

What are your retirement plans? Catching up with family and friends, and lots of travelling.

Whats your favourite Brimbank eatery or place to get coee?In my earlier years I worked at the Keilor oce and always visited Cae Dolce, which is near there. As for a favourite restaurant, I wouldnt like to oend any of the great Vietnamese restaurants in St Albans and Sunshine; they all have great dishes.

Brimbank police will ood railway station carparks in coming weeks in a bid to drive down car thes.

Inspector Chris Gilbert says police will patrol station carparks across Brimbank as part of Operation Challenge, a two-pronged attempt to stop car the and thes from motor vehicles and educate drivers on the need to lock their vehicles and not leave valuables in them.

Police will patrol all Brimbank train station

As much as were trying to prevent the crime, we also want to hook in with people who are actually parking there and give them friendly reminders if theyve le anything visible in their cars.

e operation comes a week aer the release of crime statistics that reveal an 11.2 per cent drop in crime in Brimbank in 2014.

But Brimbank had the third-highest number of motor vehicle thes in Victoria with 930 oences recorded.

carparks along the Sunbury line and V/Line stations, including Deer Park.

Inspector Gilbert said station carparks oered thieves a high concentration of cars.

He cautioned all drivers especially those driving late-model Holdens, Hondas and Nissans to take personal responsibility by locking up their vehicles, hiding belongings, tting immobilisers and using steering locks.

Its certainly worth that little bit of attention and expenditure versus the heartache of losing your car, he said.

Inspector Gilbert said the raw data failed to take into account Brimbanks large population compared with other local government areas.

Were a city of 200,000 in terms of raw numbers [the thes] are denitely not good gures and were not trying to diminish that at all, he said. But Id like to see them in a 100,000 per population reference.

Moreland, for example, might have 120,000 people, and weve got equivalent gures. Raw numbers, to me, arent really helpful when Im trying to compare to other areas.

Easter is just around the corner and that means that The Royal Childrens Hospital Good Friday Appeal is only a few, short days away. Each year, the Appeal helps raise much needed funds for equipment, research and education to support the work of The Royal Childrens Hospital.

I know that many Melton residents are doing it tough, but Id still like to encourage everyone to give what they can to this extremely worthwhile cause. The Royal Childrens Hospital plays a key role in improving the wellbeing of children across Melbourne and Victoria, and Im sure we all know families whose lives have been touched by the good work the Hospital does.

Brimbanks house sales are on the rise again and theres more interest than ever in its estates that are newly on the market.

e Real Estate Institute of Victorias latest results show Brimbank suburbs recorded the largest median price growth over the past year. Topping the suburbs were Keilor at 24.8 per cent followed by Sunshine with 16.5 per cent and Cairnlea.

With buyer inquiries on the rise and stock levels low, properties have been selling fast since the end of last year.

Dennis Family Corporation spokesperson Chris West said recent land sales had been extremely strong at the Modeina estate in Burnside, particularly since the arrival of the estates rst residents just before Christmas.

As well as three and four-year-old kinder, it will provide occasional care, maternal and child health, early childhood intervention services, parenting groups and playgroups.

Hair one minute, gone the next. At last Fridays end-of-term assembly in front of the whole school, Ardeer Primary grade 6 pupil Nathan Evans shaved his brown locks down to a number one cut for the Leukaemia Foundations Worlds Greatest Shave.

e 11-year-old from Ardeer, who loves eating jelly and playing video games, said he decided to brave the severe trim aer seeing an ad for the Greatest Shave.

He had already exceeded his fundraising target of $550 by pulling in $560 even before last weeks shave, thanks to an online campaign and some help from his mum and dad.

My donation will help a regional family travel to a hospital in the city to get treatment, he said.

His donation would also give a regional

family a free place to stay for a week close to the hospital where their child is a patient.

Nathan is one of 150,000 Australians to shave or colour their hair this month to support blood cancer victims and fund research.

According to the Leukaemia Foundation, 31 Australians are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder every day.

Ardeer Primary principal Graham Miller said it was great to see a student think about the needs of people outside the school community.

I think its a great thing hes initiated this all himself, he said.

Earlier this month, I welcomed the start of construction of the state-of-the-art Bridge sod with an enthusiastic group of young people from local sporting groups. The $11.3 million development in Melton South hockey pitches, a community pavilion and a storage building.

The site will be extensively landscaped with trees, garden, grassed areas and spectator viewing mounds. In the City of Melton we already have some wonderful sporting facilities and this new precinct at Bridge Road will offer all our residents access to one of the best multipurpose outdoor recreational facilities in the western suburbs. This initiative is something I have personally advocated for, along with the community, over a number of years and it is very pleasing to see it becoming a reality.

I am also looking forward to the upcoming

A Melton councillor has bitterly attacked e Advocate story of the gastroenteritis epidemic raging through the township.

In an emotional outburst, Cr. Malcolm MacKay accused reporters of sensationalising facts and said there was no such thing as an epidemic in Melton.

He accused the paper of blowing the situation out of all proportion and at a later committee meeting was responsible for a demand that e Advocate substantiate its claims.

For those looking to downsize, this well-maintained property may be of interest. The large living area at the front has big north-facing windows for ample natural light all year round, creating a homey feel accentuated by the warm timber wall panelling. The nearby lounge and dining rooms are fully carpeted, the charcoal carpet contrasting nicely with the bright white walls throughout. The family-meals area adjoins the kitchen. Well-maintained gardens are both front and back, with covered outdoor area at the rear. However, the star of the property is the four-room bungalow in the backyard, complete with its own kitchen. The block offers the potential for subdivision or expansion of the primary residence, subject to council approval. The property is in a great location, with Matthew Hill Reserve and Tom OBrien Park within walking distance, and schools, Sunshine train station and central shopping precinct a short drive away.
