As you may know, I will be returning to school this fall (at Iowa State University) and this is my final week with Montgomery County Extension. In the past two years, I have gotten to know each and every person associated with the fair and 4-H programs. I couldn’t have asked for a better group to work with and community to be a part of. To the volunteers, superintendents, leaders, sponsors, Extension Council and Fair Board, members you are truly top notch. Thank you for going above and beyond for our program and exhibitors. To the 4-H’ers, FFA Members and your families, thank you letting me become a part of your lives. Without your patience, devotion and thoughtfulness, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish all that I have in the past two years! I would also like to thank my team here at the Extension Office! Katie, Lori and Skie, without your patience, willingness to help and caring hearts, you helped make the 2019 Montgomery County Fair one that will be remembered. You each put in many long, long hours and to that I both applaud and thank you. (Side note—Good luck to Skie as she returns to Iowa State this fall!) Please remember, this will not be “good-bye”. This is only “see ya later!” And if you see me out and about in Montgomery County, don’t be a stranger. See ya later, Montgomery County! 4-H and FFA Families:

I would like to thank each and every one of you for your participation and involvement in the 2019 Montgomery County Fair.

(Side note—Good luck to Skie as she returns to Iowa State this fall!)

Please remember, this will not be “good-bye”. This is only “see ya later!” And if you see me out and about in Montgomery County, don’t be a stranger.

See ya later, Montgomery County! And GO CATS (Whoops, I mean Cyclones.) :)

Iowa State Fair Static Project Exhibitors

All static exhibitors selected for the Iowa State Fair should have received a letter during county fair containing information about labeling, transportation and display of your exhibit. Please contact Lori at [email protected] or call the office at 712-623-2592 if you have any questions or concerns about your project or write-up.

Please remember to bring all of your exhibits to the Extension Office before Noon on Monday, August 5th. Any exhibits received after Noon on Monday must find their own transportation to the Iowa State Fair Static Judging Day. Good luck to all State Fair Exhibitors!

Post Fair Appreciation Meeting Be on the look out for an invitation for the Post Fair Appreciation Dinner and Meeting (date still to be

determined). All 2019 Superintendents, 4-H and Youth Committee members, County Youth Council and

Club Leaders, and 4-H members are encourage to attend. We encourage open conversation and would

love to hear your ideas to make next year’s fair better and brighter for all Montgomery County 4-H and

FFA Exhibitors.

Beef Carcass Results The results and awards of the 2019 Montgomery County Carcass Show will be announced

Thursday, August 8 at 6:30 PM at the Gold Fair Building. The Mills-Montgomery Cattlemen will be

grilling burgers at this event. Premium checks will be awarded at this meeting. Beef Exhibitors,

please be on the lookout for a formal invitation in the mail within the next couple of days.

The Best of the Southwest Shootout

Four exhibitors represented Montgomery County at The Best of the Southwest Shootout on Sunday,

July 27th at Westfair near Council Bluffs. The Best of the Southwest Shootout brings county

livestock champions from across southwest Iowa together to compete for an overall title and a

chance to compete at the All-Iowa Showdown. The Montgomery County exhibitors were Rylee

Jacobs (Breeding Doe), Gage Sesker (Market Lamb and Breeding Ewe), Cloie Bruce (Market Goat

and Breeding Heifer) and Kennedy DeVries (Market Hog, Breeding Gilt, Market Beef).

Congratulations to Kennedy DeVries for Reserve Champion Market Hog and Reserve Champion

Market Beef, and Cloie Bruce for Reserve Champion Market Goat. Congrats and good luck to Gage

Sesker as he received Grand Champion Market Lamb and advances to compete in the All-Iowa

Showdown in Britt on Sunday, August 4th.

4-H and Youth Committee With the new 4-H year just around the corner, we are asking each club to nominate 1 adult and 1 youth

member to become a part of the 2019-2020 4-H and Youth Committee. The 4-H and Youth Committee is

made up of adults and youth members from each club as well as “At-Large” Members who represent the

community. While the main role of the 4-H and Youth Committee is to make and implement policies

related to the 4-H program, they also act as liaisons between the Montgomery County Extension Office

and the many 4-H Clubs throughout the county.

Once a club has nominated their representatives, please email their name and email address to Lori at

[email protected]. Nominations must be submitted before September 1st.

County Youth Council With the conclusion of the 2018-2019 4-H year, we are looking for members to join our 2019-2020

County Youth Council. The County Youth Council is made up of senior level 4-H members from clubs

across Montgomery County. As a member you would serve as a leader in the Montgomery County 4-H

program by being involved in several county wide activities such as Awards Night, tournaments, Family

Fun Night, fundraisers and many other events. County Council members are also asked to help with

summer day camps and events during the week of county fair. County Youth Council meets the third

Sunday of each month at 6 PM in the Extension Office conference room.

Any member entering grades 9-12 are encouraged to apply to be a part of the 2019-2020 County Youth

Council. Please return your application to the Extension Office by Friday, September 13.

Record Books Record keeping is a lifelong skill that the 4-H program hopes to instill in all members. Record books help

members to set goals, take action and evaluate their progress. All members are encouraged to complete

and submit a record book each year.

All record book forms can be found online at: https://www.extension.iastate.edu/montgomery/4h. First

year members will receive a free record book cover from the Montgomery County Extension Office.

Record books are due to your club leaders September 15.

Congrats, Olivia!

A very special congratulations to Olivia Jacobs for being selected to represent Montgomery County

at the Iowa State Fair as the 2019 Montgomery County Fair Queen. Olivia is an 8-year member of

the East Sunrisers 4-H Club where she has exhibited a number of projects at the county fair, served

on the County Youth Council and helped serve her club through service projects and leadership

positions. Watch Olivia at the State Fair on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage at 4:00 PM for

introductions on August 8th and 9th and again on August 10th at 7:00PM for the Iowa State Fair

Queen Coronation.
