“My, my, my– oh what a night. No one ever told me that majestic people dwelled in White Castle, but as we looked and listen to this magnificent Courtyard of Dreams-what an en-chanting moment.” On Wednesday evening September 16, 2009, the dreams of our White Castle students were realized as they repre-sented the 2009 Homecoming Court. This marked the end of 2008 King Jyruss Edwards and Queen Brittany Williams reign. White Castle High’s 2009 Homecoming King and Queen are Mr. Dontreal Tho-mas and Ms. Johnisha Robinson. Dontreal is the son of Lee Green and John Thomas. He is a member of the St. John Baptist Church, 4-H Club, Beta Club, FBLA, Math Club, and the Varsity Basketball Team. He plans to attend John Hopkins University and major in Chemistry and Pre-Med. He hopes to someday become a successful doctor and return home to help his community. Johnisha Robinson is the daughter of the late Paula Robinson and John Jack-son. She has been raised by her sister Stephannie Robinson and her God-mother, Valerie Elzy. She is a member of the Little St. John Baptist Church of White Castle where the Rev. John Stone is pastor. Johnisha is also a member of FBLA and the 4-H CLb. Her future plans are to attend Southern Uni-versity and major in Nursing. The BullDawg Press would like to con-gratulate Dontreal Thomas and Joh-nisha Robinson White Castle High’s 2009 Homecoming King and Queen. When those lights come on those fall nights at Bulldog Stadium it means one thing, football season has arrived. There are lots of ex-pectations and questions to be fulfilled and answered this football season. The Bulldogs have a strong core of talent especially in their skill positions. The majority of the team is returning this season. It seems as if the roster is loaded in every position. On paper the Dogs have enough talent to make a serious run at the coveted Class A State Championship. However there are still questions that linger around the team. Who will fill in the void that All-State performer Jyruss Edwards left. Who will fill the void Brian Single-ton left as the team’s vocal leader. Incumbents for those voids are Jonathan Roberts, Tyre Bracken, and Javier Bazadula. Here to un-cover some of the mysteries and enlighten us o the status of the WCHS Football Team, Head Coach Ferrante Dominique and Asst. Coach Bruce Hoffman.

Coach Dominique: Our improve-ments we have made this far is getting quality numbers on the practice field. By having quality numbers, this allows us to not play as many guys both ways on of-fense and defense. The challenges we face are chang-ing the team’s attitude. We have to think and play with an attitude of dominance and excellence through adversities. When a team can re-

spond well to adversity, they seem to be able to compete and be successful 100% of the time. Coach Hoffman: This sea-son is going well. We have lots of speed at the skill positions. However we’ll be as only good as our line-men. In other words as our line improves our perform-ance will improve.

The great Muhammad Ali once said, “ Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a de-sire, ,a dream, a vision. Coach Tammy Pierce and the Lady Bulldogs’ Volleyball team are poised to make a run at the state title. On paper the Lady Bulldogs have all the ingredients to be a state championship team. They have the size, talent, depth, experience, and most of all heart. All these characteris-tics have been on display this season. The Lady Bulldogs have gotten off to a terrific start. The girls are 10-4 and have a 2nd Place finish in the Brusly Invitational to add to their resume’. What might be

even more impressive is that the Junior Varsity Team is undefeated. However the success of the ladies seems to go unnoticed. Lack of support seems to still haunt the program. The Volleyball Team has all of the pieces to build a strong program to be good for years to come. There is an abun-dance of young talent to be developed. So come and sup-port the Lady Bulldogs. I promise you won’t be disap-pointed.

As the old adage goes, “There’s no place like home.” Imagine being thousands of miles away from home. That’s reality for11th Grade foreign exchange student Elisabeth Strauss. Elisabeth hails from East Ger-many and has been selected to be an Ambassador for her country. Elisabeth took time out of her busy schedule to share some of her experi-ences with the BullDawg Press: Q: How does it feel to be in America?

A: It’s different because there are so many different cultures in America. Q: How has life been in White Castle A: I’ve never been in a town where mostly everyone is related. I came from a very large town where there are thousands of people. In White Castle everybody knows everybody. I really stand out here. However I love the interaction. Q: How are the schools in Germany?

A: We take more subjects (12-14). The teachers are strict. The students hang in cliques. The only way you can check out of school if you’re sick. We also learn faster. However we do not have spirit week or home-coming, and only 12th grad-ers are allowed to go to prom. Q: How has your experi-ence as a member of the WCHS Volleyball Team been? A: It’s cool being on the team. I do no feel like a for-eign exchange student playing on the team, I feel like an actual student from White Castle. Q: What legacy do you want to leave at White Castle? A: I want people to remem-ber me as a friendly person. I want to breakdown some of the cultural stereotypes that Americans have to-wards Germans. I want peo-ple to see that we are the same. Our cultures might be different, but we are both human.”

This is the first year WCHS will have a math club. “I am extremely happy and excited about the startup of our math club.” WCHS Math Club is a recognized student academic club with many social and educational activi-ties aimed at anyone inter-ested in mathematics. The purpose of WCHS math club is to promote scholarships in mathematics as an integral part of high school and future career paths. There were some students that were afraid to join the club because they were afraid that they didn’t know certain mathe-matics concepts, but I let them know that “everything” is a learning process”. At first meeting that was held on Sept. 4, I emphasized that we are a team ( Together Every-one Achieves More ). “ As a

math club we have to look out for each other mathemati-cally.” The requirements for joining the math club are:

• Must have a G.P.A. of 3.0 overall (and maintain it).

• Must score a basic or above on LEAP/GEE/ILEAP.

• Must have an interest in mathematics.

Also in the meeting, I gave several examples on what I meant by TEAM. “On a foot-ball team, if someone needs help on passing, it’s to every-one's advantage if that per-son gets more practice.” On the math team, it’s the same thing. “We must try to help each other to practice our weakness.” There is an or-

ganization called Mu Alpha Theta who purpose is to stimulate interest in mathe-matics by providing public recognition of superior mathe-matical scholarship and by promoting mathematical ac-tivities. There are now over 1500 chapters in the U.S. and foreign countries. Colleges and major universities recog-nize membership in Mu Alpha Theta as an important part of the student’s academic re-sume. “Once I get all the dues from the math club members I will submit all the information to the Mu Alpha Theta Organization so that our math club will be named Mu Alpha Theta. — The WCHS Math Club sponsors are L. Nelson, K. Murungi, and B. Hoffman.
