Tourists in Albany can now appreciate the full force of the powerful Southern Ocean from the safety of a suspended lookout which extends 10 metres beyond the cliff face.

The daring lookout is the first of its kind to be built over the ocean in Western Australia, and was part of major upgrade works valued at $6.1 million at popular tourist sites The Gap and the Natural Bridge in Torndirrup National Park in the State’s South West.

BGC Construction’s regional team was awarded the $4 million contract to build the new facilities which included stainless steel walkways and lookouts, elevated platforms, granite furniture, feature concrete, carparks and new signage.

BGC Construction Regional Manager Ross Marshall said the lookout offered a safe and accessible option for all visitors to enjoy a more exhilarating experience in this unique and beautiful part of WA.

“For the first time, visitors can now safely watch the spectacular sight of powerful waves crashing against the cliff face just 40

metres below them through a see-through platform,” said Ross.

But the construction was not without its challenges.

“Building a structure in mid-air over a wild and often unpredictable coastline is no easy feat, so I am particularly proud of the BGC Construction team for this incredible achievement,” said Ross Marshall.

“We also had to import a specialised form of stainless steel from Sweden to create the walkways and lookouts, which required highly technical welding and polishing skills.”

The new facilities opened in April and are expected to attract a growing number of visitors to the region each year.

BGC Development First residents prepare to move into sold-out Tribeca South development

Above: Tribeca South development at The Springs Rivervale.

Aspiring home-owners in Western Australia have shown a keen appetite for apartments at the Tribeca South development at The Springs Rivervale, snapping up all 72 residences off-the-plan within 12 weeks of their release in 2014.

Tribeca South, a BGC Development project, comprises a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and is situated in a prime riverside location. The sold-out development is now welcoming its first residents.

Tia Fredericks was the first of the lucky buyers who secured a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment at Tribeca South, her first off-the-plan apartment purchase.

“I liked the design and the apartment size which was larger than other projects in the area, and the display suite gave me a better idea of what the finished product would look like.”

“I also chose Tribeca South because it was close to the city and it was being developed and built by a name I knew well – BGC,” said Tia Fredericks.

“The off-the-plan buying process was also easy to navigate, and I was kept up to date throughout the entire process.

“I’m very happy with the finished apartment – I love my balcony, spacious bedrooms and the simple colour scheme in the bathrooms.”

The development achieved practical completion in May 2016 and is the first of three stages to be built in the Tribeca development in The Springs precinct.

The project, which was built by BGC Construction, features excellent connectivity to the Crown entertainment precinct, the new Perth

Stadium, Perth CBD and existing transport infrastructure, and includes a landscaped terrace and lifestyle deck for residents, complete with a pool and gymnasium.

More than 200 purchasers and potential buyers across all BGC Development projects were treated to an exclusive guided tour of the shared facilities and display apartment at Tribeca South at an open day in April.

The project team received overwhelmingly positive feedback from an open day survey with all respondents indicating they could picture themselves living in an apartment by BGC Development – a great outcome and endorsement for the team.

An innovative new approach by BGC Residential is helping to take the stress out of the pre-start process by offering new home buyers the chance to select fixtures and fittings for their new home any time and anywhere using an online portal.

The pre-start selection portal was launched in April this year by the WA Housing Centre, a BGC Residential company, to give customers greater flexibility to plan and prepare for their initial pre-start meeting in their own time.

“When planning a home, many new home buyers can be overwhelmed by the number of decisions they need to make in order to decide how they want their home to look,” said BGC Residential General Manager Mark Anderson.

“Our new online portal allows our customers to review all of their fixture and fitting options from the comfort of their own home, and add their selected items to a virtual shopping trolley.

“Our customers can now enjoy the added benefit and flexibility of accessing this information online, at a time that suits them and from anywhere in the world, which takes some of the stress out of building a home,” said Mark Anderson.

BGC Residential - Plan your new home anywhere, any time.

“This means our customers can now spend more time reviewing, planning and visualising their home design before they meet with us face-to-face, which streamlines the pre-start process and delivers more efficient planning outcomes.”

The online customer portal provides comprehensive information on fixture and fitting options as well as building progress updates, photos and any relevant documentation for the home owner once development has commenced.

“WA Housing Centre first launched an online portal in 2014, as part of our focus on continually striving to make it as easy as possible for our customers to get into a new home.

“In looking at the pre-start process, we recognised an opportunity to expand that online interaction with home buyers – and we’re delighted to have now launched an improved portal, which will help more West Australians to realise their dreams of home ownership.”

Brikmakers recognised through Employer Partnership of the Year Award

Brikmakers has been recognised for its long-term commitment to training electrical apprentices with an Employer Partnership of the Year Award from vocational training provider Polytechnic West.

Unbeknownst to Brikmakers, Polytechnic West independently nominated the company for the award which came as a very pleasant and welcome surprise for the electrical team.

Brikmakers Electrical Manager and Apprenticeship Co-ordinator for the Electrical Department, Chris Pedrick proudly accepted the award at the Polytechnic West Awards Ceremony at Crown Perth in March.

“We’re humbled to win this award, which is a testament to the commitment and dedication from a large team of people, and we’re thankful for the ongoing support and recognition from the staff and lecturers at Polytechnic West,” said Chris.

“Our apprentices are valued members of our team, who have contributed to the installation of our brick factory and continue to conduct ongoing maintenance work at all four of our Brikmakers plants.”

Since its inception, Brikmakers has trained more than 15 electrical apprentices with many securing ongoing employment with the company upon completion of their training.

The awards acknowledge the success of apprenticeship partnerships across all Polytechnic training divisions including Construction, Hospitality, Community Services and Business & IT. All businesses must be nominated by a Polytechnic West lecturer.

Patrick Watkins, Head of Programs at Polytechnic West’s electrical division, nominated Brikmakers for the construction category to acknowledge the outstanding hands-on interactive approach taken by the company.

“The great thing about the relationship with Brikmakers is that the communication flows very well in both directions,” said Patrick.

“Chris Pedrick takes a huge interest in his students – he is very proactive, he cares a lot about the apprentices and he sets a great example.”

Brikmakers currently has three apprentices participating in the training program. As part of the changes to TAFE in Western Australia, all Polytechnic West campuses are now part of South Metropolitan TAFE.

An integrated partnership between BGC Transport and BGC Cement

An integrated partnership with BGC Transport, combined with the recent commissioning of two new silos in Port Hedland, has enabled BGC Cement to ensure continuity of cement supply to remote regions in the Pilbara.

BGC Transport kicked off 2016 by assuming responsibility for a transportation contract to deliver cement from the new silos to a remote mine site in the region.

The contract has expanded BGC Cement’s capabilities and streamlined BGC’s service offering in the State’s North West.

“We provide transport services to all BGC Cement sites, and we’re pleased to support its expansion into this remote region,” said BGC Transport General Manager Geoff Conway.

“We use a Kenworth 908 truck with a B-Double configuration and a total of four trailers – which is known as a Quad – to deliver more than 220 tonnes of General Portland Cement every week across two trips.

“Our two drivers operate on a rotating fly-in-fly-out roster, and the vehicle is equipped with an MT Data tracking device which provides real-time data on truck location, speeds, and engine parameters via phone and satellite networks to ensure communication can be made in remote locations.”

The cement supply contract was won by BGC Cement in January 2016 through a competitive tendering process.

“The key to winning this work was having the two additional silos constructed, commissioned and operational to support our one existing silo, guaranteeing the continuity of

cement supply and transportation from our Port Hedland facility,” said BGC Cement General Manager Derek Houareau.

“The additional silos and support from BGC Transport allow us to tender for more work in the North West – something which was not previously an economically viable proposition when supplying from our facilities in Perth.”

The three silos also allow flexibility to stock a range of products including General Portland Cement, Slag and Low Heat to service projects such as mining, road stabilisation and concrete batch plants.

“As a result of our expanded facilities and partnership with BGC Transport, we are now better positioned to supply cement to the broader region and improve our footprint in the Pilbara,” said Derek.

BGC Plasterboard launch industry leading GTEK™ Premium Gypsum Technology

A new brand of light-weight, high-quality plasterboard products has been launched with the introduction of GTEK™ Premium Gypsum Technology by BGC Plasterboard.

The new brand is the biggest change to the business in the past decade, revolutionising the way plasterboard is manufactured in WA.

“GTEK™ is not just a new brand name, it’s the culmination of three years of research and development to release a new and lighter plasterboard with a smoother surface, harder edges and easier to sand jointing compounds,” said BGC Plasterboard General Manager Roger Brynjulfsen.

“We’ve embraced the latest technology and updated our machinery to improve our sheet manufacturing and produce our own high-performance pre-mix compounds.

“The team at BGC Plasterboard has worked tirelessly to develop the GTEK™ brand and its range of superior plasterboard products, and I congratulate them on achieving this significant milestone.”

The brand was launched at the BGC Plasterboard factory in Hazelmere in April, with more than 90 guests in attendance including interstate customers from South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.

“We’ve received very positive feedback from our customers, who were impressed with the new manufacturing technology, light-weight plasterboard and our new compounds range,” said

BGC Plasterboard Sales and Marketing Manager Charlie Young.

“We demonstrated the physical improvements we’ve made during a factory tour on the night, which was a highlight for many of our customers – who despite distributing our products for many years, hadn’t seen the manufacturing process before.

“We’re excited to now be working with our clients to launch the new brand in their stores to further promote the product range.”

200,000L innovative water tank delivers solutions for regional town

To support improvements to the water supply scheme in the remote regional town of Denham, over 700km north of Perth, BGC Precast manufactured a 200,000 litre elevated, dual-use water tank.

The elevated water tank features a unique design with the tank segmented into four quadrants that sit on top of a 16 metre high base tower, to support the existing desalination plant and provide 100,000 litres of drinking water and fit-for-purpose water for the town at sufficient pressure.

“We used an innovative steel and concrete formwork design, fine-tuned the concrete mix designs and used intense vibration of the concrete to create the precast sections all undercover in our new state-of-the-art facilities at Naval Base in Kwinana,” said BGC Precast General Manager Dan Jones.

The four tower segments and four tank quadrants weighed 37 tonnes and 50 tonnes each respectively. Together with the full assembled roof slabs, more than 388 tonnes of prefabricated concrete components were delivered to site.

In collaboration with BGC Contracting, who acted as the main contractor and undertook all site works under challenging windy conditions, the tank was safely assembled within the tight program required by Water Corporation.

“It’s difficult to successfully create a large three-dimensional monolithic tank with no joints; so it was a particularly challenging project, but we thrive on the opportunity to create innovative solutions using the latest technology,” said Dan.

“We’re also proud to have exceeded all expectations of Water Corporation, which further cements our position as leading innovators in the sector.”

“Embracing this same spirit of innovation, BGC Precast has also invested in manufacturing technology to provide a prefabricated concrete flooring system known as Hollowcore. It’s a lightweight system providing span capabilities of up to 20 metres with no propping or formwork required.”

More details on this system are available at: www.bgcprecast.com.au

Collaboration between two BGC divisions has led to two major contract wins, collectively valued at $29 million, to design and construct Woolworths stores in Mandurah and Aveley.

BGC Construction submitted a competitive tender offering an affordable and time-efficient building solution using joint-free concrete slabs, precast concrete retaining and precast concrete wall panels manufactured by BGC Precast.

The Greenfields Mandurah store achieved practical completion in May 2016, with the Aveley store expected to reach practical completion before the end of the year.

BGC Construction also recently partnered with BGC Precast to win a competitive tender with the City of Busselton, valued at $19 million, to build the Busselton Administration and Civic Centre.

“The use of BGC Precast’s innovative products gave us a competitive edge in the tendering process and positioned us well to win additional contracts with Fabcot, Woolworths’ corporate property division,” said BGC Construction Regional Manager Ross Marshall.

BGC Construction has marked its 14th project with the Royal Australian Air Force Association with the recent completion of the Alice Ross-King Care Centre, a 102-bed state-of-the-art residential care facility in Bull Creek valued at $26 million.

Built on the banks of Lake Howard, the two-storey centre offers permanent, respite and dementia care and features on-site facilities including a hairdressing salon, library, medical rooms, café and undercroft parking. The building design incorporates extensive full-height glazing to maximise natural light and offer magnificent lakeside views for residents to enjoy.

“I am extremely pleased with the way the project was managed by BGC Construction, and delivered on time and on budget with minimal impact on the existing estate,” said John Murray, Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Australian Air Force Association.

BGC Construction has worked with the RAAFA organisation for more than 15 years, including six years developing the Bull Creek Air Force Memorial Estate.

Successful JV delivers contemporary turnkey housing options

More than 70 families will call Blackmore Park Estate home thanks to a successful joint venture between LandCorp, BGC Development and Now Living, a BGC Residential company.

The new estate, on Allinson Drive in Girrawheen, offers 52 flexible turnkey house and land packages. The estate is built around a central parkland on the former Blackmore Primary School site, and is located close to existing amenities including schools, shops and parks and just minutes from the beach.

“We’re very proud to partner with LandCorp in this fantastic development, which is central to the transformation and growth of a well-established and well-located area,” said Now Living General Manager Troy Gorton.

“We were able to create a turnkey house and land product which offers the stability of a fixed price contract, and gives buyers flexibility in the choice of interior colour schemes, elevations and optional upgrades.

“This product has been well received, with 60 per cent of the development already sold and the first residents now settled in. It is great to see this vibrant new community coming to life.”

Now Living worked across a number of areas in conjunction with LandCorp and BGC Development to develop the highly

anticipated estate, including building, project management, and sales and marketing activities.

In a first for the company, Now Living also delivered three showcase homes to demonstrate the various housing and design features available to potential buyers.

“The grand opening of our first homes was highly successful with an overwhelming number of visitors through, which is an excellent result for our inaugural showcase event,” said Troy.

Now Living will also deliver a six-unit development on one of two grouped housing lots within the estate.
