FROM THE PASTOR ’S DESK

Today’s Gospel account of Mary’s journey to see and help her cousin Elizabeth is a beautiful story of love. Even though Mary just learned that she is with child, who will be named Jesus, she goes in haste to visit Elizabeth, who is 6 months pregnant with John the Baptist at that time. Not only is there a beautiful exchange of familial love between Mary and Elizabeth, but Elizabeth names Mary as the mother of God. She recognizes that Mary’s child is both divine and human. Elizabeth’s own son, John the Baptist, senses the presence of Jesus and leaps for joy in Elizabeth’s womb. This divinely inspired meeting between

two mother’s and their unborn sons is a testimony to the truths which the Catholic Church still teaches, which is that motherhood is a blessed vocation and that a unique human being exists from the moment of conception. We come closer to Bethlehem in this last week of Advent and we should pause to notice Mary and Joseph’s trust that God will take care of them, even in their desperation to find lodging. There are many details to pray with in the first chapters of both. The first chapters of Matthew and Luke give the nativity stories of Jesus’ birth and childhood. While we are familiar with story because we celebrate it each year at Christmas time, there is always more to meditate on as we make our spiritual journey to Bethlehem. The reaction of John the Baptist leaping for joy in his mother’s womb because Jesus had come to him in Mary’s womb is a wonderful Pro-Life moment. We should recognize the right to life of an unborn child. We pray for an end to abortion. We pray for healing for anyone who has participated in an abortion. We pray that all children and their mother’s be protected and feel safe in our world. We pray for a conversion of our country and the world. We pray that every person see every other person as equal in God’s eyes, thus meriting our dignity and respect. We need to see every other person as our sister or brother and help them in whatever way we may be able to because of Christian charity. At Christmas, we remember a child who born into this world 2,021 years ago who became the one who would reconcile humanity with God. Each and every child conceived is precious to God. May we meditate in our prayer this week leading up to Christmas that Jesus, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, renew our dedication to be a people of life. Thank you to all who prepared for and celebrated with us the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe this past Sunday. We prepared the decorations for the image of Guadalupe a week before and prayed a Novena from December 3rd until the 12th. Our Hispanic community prepared for and did a program on Saturday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The program included reflecting on the mysteries of the life of Jesus and a dramatization of the story of the apparitions of Guadalupe, lead by the Catholic Faith Formation program. Then our Hispanic Choir sang Marian songs for an hour. Then there was an hour of traditional dancing in honor or Mary. Then we celebrated Mass starting at 11:00 p.m. Saturday night. Then we went to the cafeteria for shared meal. On Sunday afternoon, after the 12:00 noon Mass, Dec 12th, we had a mariachi band play a few more songs in Church and then we went to the cafeteria for another shared meal. It was a beautiful display of devotion to Mary, the mother of Jesus, as she comes to us as the Virgin of Guadalupe. I am thankful for the work of our staff, especially Sr. Beatrice and Ms. Monica Valles, along with our Hispanic choir and the families of the Catechism classes, and the leadership of the Hispanic community of Holy Name for their work to have a successful Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration.

Your pastor is becoming an old man on December 30th. I turn 60 years old on that day. It’s hard to even write that, but it is the truth. For many parishioners, I’m just a youngster. El relato del Evangelio de hoy sobre el viaje de María para ver y ayudar a su prima Isabel es una hermosa historia de amor. Aunque María acaba de enterarse de que está embarazada, que se llamará Jesús, se apresura a visitar a Isabel, que en ese momento está embarazada de 6 meses de Juan el Bautista. No solo hay un hermoso intercambio de amor familiar entre María e Isabel, sino que Isabel nombra a María como la madre de Dios. Ella reconoce que el hijo de María es divino y humano. El propio hijo de Isabel, Juan el Bautista, siente la presencia de Jesús y salta de gozo en el vientre de Isabel.

Este encuentro de inspiración divina entre dos madres y sus hijos por nacer es un testimonio de las verdades que todavía enseña la Iglesia Católica, que es que la maternidad es una vocación bendita y que existe un ser humano único desde el momento de la concepción. Nos acercamos a Belén en esta última semana de Adviento y deberíamos hacer una pausa para notar la confianza de María y José en que Dios los cuidará, incluso en su desesperación por encontrar alojamiento. Hay muchos detalles para orar en los primeros capítulos de ambos. Los primeros capítulos de Mateo y Lucas relatan el nacimiento y la infancia de Jesús. Si bien estamos familiarizados con la historia porque la celebramos cada año en Navidad, siempre hay más en qué meditar mientras hacemos nuestro viaje espiritual a Belén.

La reacción de Juan el Bautista saltando de alegría en el vientre de su madre porque Jesús había venido a él en el vientre de María es un maravilloso momento Pro-Vida. Debemos reconocer el derecho a la vida del feto. Oramos por el fin del aborto. Oramos por la curación de cualquier persona que haya participado en un aborto. Oramos para que todos los niños y sus madres estén protegidos y se sientan seguros en nuestro mundo. Oramos por la conversión de nuestro país y del mundo. Oramos para que todas las personas vean a todas las demás como iguales a los ojos de Dios, mereciendo así nuestra dignidad y respeto. Necesita-mos ver a los demás como nuestros hermanos y ayudarlos en todo lo que podamos gracias a la caridad cristiana. En Navidad, recordamos a un niño que nació en este mundo hace 2.021 años y que se convirtió en el que reconciliaría a la humanidad con Dios. Todos y cada uno de los niños concebidos son preciosos para Dios. Que meditemos en nuestra oración esta semana previa a la Navidad para que Jesús, que es el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida, renueve nuestra dedicación a ser un pueblo de vida.

Gracias a todos los que prepararon y celebraron con nosotros la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe este pasado domingo. Preparamos las decoraciones para la imagen de Guadalupe una semana antes y rezamos una Novena del 3 al 12 de diciembre. Nuestra comunidad hispana se preparó e hizo un programa el sábado por la noche a partir de las 7:00 p.m. hasta la 1:00 a.m. del domingo por la mañana. El programa incluyó una reflexión sobre los misterios de la vida de Jesús y una dramatización de la historia de las apariciones de Guadalupe, liderada por el programa de Formación en la Fe Católica. Luego, nuestro Coro Hispano cantó canciones marianas durante una hora. Luego hubo una hora de baile tradicional en honor a María. Luego celebramos la Misa a partir de las 11:00 p.m. el sábado. Luego fuimos a la cafetería para compartir comida. El domingo por la tarde, después de la Misa de las 12:00 del mediodía, el 12 de diciem-bre, tuvimos una banda de mariachis tocando algunas canciones más en la Iglesia y luego fuimos a la cafetería para compartir otra comida.
