“You’re a grand old flag ...”As Ross Snyder, the chaplain for Larner-Segraves American Le-gion Post 36 in Oskaloosa, looks on, service officer Ellis Moses hoists the colors skyward prior to the June 4 doubleheader be-tween the Oskaloosa River Bandits (Junior Team) and the Topeka Senators. Coached by Chad VanHoutan, the River Bandits are sponsored by the local American Legion post, which is closing in on its 100th birthday. Ross Snyder is the nephew of Post Com-mander James Snyder.

Sabetha sole championamong Big 7, NKL teams Between the Big 7 League and the Northeast Kansas League, three area schools were represented at the state base-ball and softball tournaments last month, but only the Big 7’s Sabetha Bluejays returned home with a state champion-ship. The Bluejays beat Rock Creek 10-4 May 27 in Topeka to lay claim to the Class 3A baseball title. Sabetha finished the year with a mark of 21-3. Meanwhile, the same day, the Big 7’s Holton Wildcats fell to Silver Lake 7-5 in Lawrence in the semifinals of the Class 3A softball tournament. The Wildcats completed the season with a record of 20-3. Both Class 3-A tournaments came to an end away from Em-poria due to poor field condi-tions there. The only NKL team to go to a state tournament, the Oska-loosa Bears, dropped a 10-7 de-cision to St. Mary’s Colgan May 24 in Pratt in the championship game of the Class 2-1A softball tournament. The Bears were 23-3 on the year.
