Businessman of the year :):)

With the new accounts, profits, budgets and plans. Financial year starts quite interesting

right? We thought of making it even more interesting for Visakhapatnam businessmen with Business

awards in all prime categories. Month of May is the perfect time to go for a holiday and enjoy our

profits or get out from some failure. Sit by the window sipping hot coffee looking at the sunset or stay

tucked in office cabins reading your favorite magazine to know the world around you. Same idea

hit my mind 4 years back on the same day and it took me one year to get this magazine on stands.

It’s been 3 years since we started LN Business Destiny and we still have something new to explore

& write in this city of destiny always. This year is something new, to see LN Business magazine a

whole new level. We are proud to welcome Shri. Prabhu Kishore as the Businessman of the year FY

2015-16, Visakhapatnam.

Our award, Businessman of the year is the new award in industry. This year for the first

time, the jury panel selected a man after 2 months of panel discussion considering all parameters.

When we instituted the award back in 1982, we believed that that the businessman, as

much as anyone else, could be a role model for society. We believed that there was need to highlight

the achievements of individuals of high integrity and competence, who live by and represent the best

there is in business. They were people who the young could look up and aspire to emulate. This was

in spite of the fact that in those days businessman, business and profit wee almost dirty words.

Once again we are proud to welcome Prabhu Kishore, the first man to receive this coveted

award, as Businessman of the year FY-2015-16.

Entrepreneurs, enjoy reading!!

Sharjah Airport International Free (SAIF) Zone, which conducted its maiden roadshow to showcase it as the industrial powerhouse of the Unit-ed Arab Emirates, has so far attracted 7,000 plus companies from India. SAIF Zone Sales Manager (Commercial Di-vision) Thomas Joseph and Sales Offi-cer Anoop Warrier interacted with the participants at programme organised jointly by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations and Interna-tional Business Forum on expanding business globally. Demand for office space in major cit-ies shrunk during the first quarter of the current financial year with Chennai registering a steep decline, according to a survey by property consultants, Cushman & Wakefield. The survey cov-ered eight cities and demand fell in five of them including Kolkata, Mum-bai and Pune. Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Ahmebabad bucked the trend, according to the survey. The sluggish absorption level is marked by a “char-acteristic slow first quarter, fraught with delayed decision-making by Indi-an companies.” “Demand looks prom-ising going forward with increasing business confidence backed by policy announcements and government ini-tiatives. Employees from all six branches of IDBI in the city launched four-day strike along with their colleagues in different parts of the country on Mon-day protesting against the move to privatise the bank. About 60 employ-ees gathered at the IDBI branch on VIP Road raised slogans against offloading majority stake. Tax laws in India at a session on the Union Budget - 2016 organised by the Tax Law Research Group. For the effective enforcement of tax laws, it was time for phrasing them clearly and unambiguously leaving no room for doubt on the activity to be taxed, the rate of taxation or the mechanism of collection. Unfortunately, it’s rarely done in India and I presume the laws on GST will also follow the same trend, and CAs and tax consultants will al-ways be in business. The common

Asia and Pacific regions now account for 51 per cent of the world’s poor. Countries in Asia are already grappling with slower growth and falling international trade, and need to find new drivers for growth while extracting extra mileage from existing industries. START-UP F & B PLOT 17

“Visakhapatnam is a market where the new comers make business when they are new, so they try to be new every day.

Speak with any start-up vet-eran and they will tell you that when you are starting on your own, it’s important to gain ex-

perience in what you do. Luckily, for Sumanth Behera and his two part-ners, that’s what they learnt even before setting up their own eatery. Their earlier experience in food and marketing had convinced Vizagites about their abilities resulting in prof-its from the very beginning.

Someone rightly said, “If you want to walk faster, walk alone but if you want to walk farther, walk united”. This statement seems to have had a strong effect on these three people. The moment they decided to work together, every-thing else started falling into place. When a friend of theirs wanted to open a cafe, they tried searching for several places. That was when they found this particular place and set up PLOT 17.

Sumanth Behera, Pavan Ku-mar; the owner of Whoomp, once a TCS employee and now a proud

partner of his family business and Satya Prasad, a partner in Bowl n Roll, together set out to explore the world of food with their own ideas and dreams. With a total in-vestment of Rs.25 lakhs in equal share, this trio established PLOT 17, on December 30, 2015 with the aim of presenting new flavors to Vizagites. Although they had certain disadvantages with their location and parking, they man-aged to pull through and emerge with flying colours due to proper planning.

Sumanth is a big foodie and Satya is a good chef, this connect-ed them at Bowl N Roll. A few days later, they started experiment-ing with food and finally they set up Plot 17. Every business has teething troubles and searching a place was a big challenge in an emerging city like Visakhapatnam with growing rentals. A friend of Sumanth had thought of start-ing a café here and it didn’t work

out for him but it worked out for them. Although the place is a little off beat, they just believed in their concept and unusual recipes.

Initially Plot 17 faced sev-eral hurdles with people in the neighborhood. Gradually they sorted out all the issues one by one and it is smooth sailing now. Although Plot 17 has major com-petition from FSM and Little Italy, they want to introduce something new to the city. “Visakhapatnam is a market where newcomers do great business when they are new, so we try to be new every day. Changing the menu and the way we present the dishes makes us successful in getting repeat

customers,” says Sumanth. The focus is on dishes which are not available in and around the area. As Satya is already into the food industry, it made their function-ing easier right from purchases to sales. Food business is an every-day job and they have their own strategies to cut costs and survive in the market.

Sumanth is a serial entre-preneur; he starts a new busi-ness, streamlines that and again he needs someone who runs the show, so that he’s free to diversify into another venture. He connects with people easily; this is what his marketing strategy is. “’Whatever you want to do with your life you

do it, but if you fail don’t blame us’, my father tells me this, every time”, says Sumanth. Although he comes from a defence background never had interest in studies or a run-of-the-mill job. His career started once he dropped out from engineering and started ‘Bass-ment’ in 2011 with Rs. 3 lakhs borrowed from his parents. “We are the ones who did Sunburn in Visakhapatnam for the first time; we brought Nikhil Chinappa here. Be passionate about your work rather than money,” is my motto.

After earning decent profits in events, he wanted to introduce something new to Visakhapatnam and started “Whoomp”, a 3D print-

ing unit and couldn’t sell the prod-uct in the Visakhapatnam market successfully. Then with the grow-ing night life restrictions, when he saw demand for late night kitch-ens, this enterprising youngster started “Hunger Busters”. He then ventured into “Plot 17”, raising some capital from home with his savings.

Advice to new comers in Food & Beverage Industry

“Everybody has ideas, imple-mentation is what matters. I re-alized that very late. I don’t want young entrepreneurs to make the same mistake. Build teams. Don’t work alone.”

AGRI BUSINESS MRS. KRANTHI

By Aara Sharma

A TECHIE TURNED

INTO A FARMER; A WOMEN’S POWER

IS LIMITLESS

Most of us dream of an as-sured life;a life with cer-tainties and guarantees. A secured job, a house, a ve-

hicle, some savings and good amount of holidays to spend time with our family, these are the things that make us feel that we’re living a great life. We’re satisfied with what we already have, just because it makes us feel that we have a fortified future.

This puts us in the rat race; of earning money, which is lost in the cycle of paying bills, having a little fun and saving for a future. We don’t care if we are earning as much as we deserve, as long as we’re perceived to have a ‘Settled-life’. More so for wom-en, who are always advised to settle down in a secured job; preferably a Government job. The society brushes off women’s aspirations of achieving something in life because, our society doesn’t want its women to take any

sort of risk.Although she’s a qualified en-

gineer who worked as an IT profes-sional for more than a decade, she decided to do what most of us don’t even think of as a possibility.

She left her well-paying job in Detroit, which might me a dream job for many of us. And what she did af-ter she left her job is almost like an out-worldly thing for most of us. She entered the most-feared arena of ‘Farming’. Right from her idealistic years, she always wanted to do farm-ing. Her passion and interest lied in farming. She always wanted to ex-periment with cultivation techniques and increase the nutrition values in the plants and fruits.

So she came back to India and decided to get into farming. That was how her agri business came into existence. There is no name for her organic farm where she decided to

grow healthy organic food. She and her siblings owned a piece of land in the area of Itlamaamidipalli, Ramb-hadrapuram district, Vijayanagaram and that’s where she decided to lay down her plans into action.

Her job as an IT professional had enabled her to have enough amount of savings to get into farming. She got in touch with the revenue officers, the local panchayats and other officials and found out more about the to-pography, legalities, existing farming techniques etc., in that area. She then used the most recommended meth-od; Google, to find out more about farming. She tried various techniques and believed in manpower rather than machines, as this could increase employment as well.

“My main motto is to bring a rev-olution in our food and to make the food healthier. Even if I can cater to only 25 families, I’m happy, because I’m sure that this is just a start to making our lives better. In fact I make sure that my whole family gets the vegetables from Kranthi.”

She purchased a total of 60 acres of land and started organizing a trial of growing all the vegetables and fruits that can be grown in the topography. She chose to grow fruits like avocados, pears, apples, etc. She started planting three sapling for each fruit. Upon being asked about how she manages the marketing/ administration part of her farming, she says,” I don’t have too much yield to give into the market. Rambhad-rapuram market has been my first market. So whatever yield I got, I sold it in the local market. Once I gained confidence, I started to supply the

products to Spencer’s. Spencer’s buy through local purchasers who pro-cure from local sellers/farmers and send to Spencer’s. Their payment terms were good; I used to get the payment in a week.

This went on for four years and I finally stopped this system. My main target was households. They are my buyers as I wanted them to be. Now I’m meeting only 25 to 30 households. My prices are close to the Raithu ba-zaar prices.” Although her plants are organic and consume a lot of extra effort and necessities, she sells them at the normal rates since she aims to changing the lifestyle and not just to earn profits.

She uses only FYM instead of fer-tilizers. She also grows sugarcane in her farm and sells jaggery made out of those sugarcanes at Rs.75 per Kilo-gram. Even tough sugarcane farmers

are making less money she believes that they are quite profitable with that crop. Since there is tremendous change in the markets of Visakhap-atnam, she believes that she will be able to hold her value here and that she might be able to introduce people to the mixed culture that we find in the farm.

At the moment, not many farm-ers have the skill and knowledge re-quired for organic farming. This is one of the biggest challenges for the organic farming industry in itself, thus she believes that competition is not exactly a thing to worry about. They havegroups of farmers who pro-duce various other crops. She is total-ly interested into the increase of poly houses and green houses.

“First thing farmers need to have is,‘unity’. I have opted for Government subsidies for poly house and green

house. I didn’t follow the same for other crops, because especially when you go to Government offices for this process you need to spend a lot of time and money. I’d rather invest the same time in the business. My farm is completely set up with new farming technology. I don’t plough my land, I don’t need tractors. I farm with mini-mum costs.

In this country, when an edu-cated woman talks about her plans and implementations of her ideas in the field of farming, we can always hope to see the brighter side of our country as this is how we move ahead towards its development.

Oh, by the way, we didn’t tell you her name! Her name is literally synonymous to “Revolution”, so rel-evant to the food-revolution that she is bringing about. Her name is Mrs. Kranthi Paturi.

work within to ensure members get real value from attending. Here, each member has the opportunity to dis-cuss their business and any types of professions or trades they are hoping to work with. Following this, mem-bers can pass on referrals whether for their own business or for others they know – it’s a collaborative and effective networking solution.

Business referrals at BNI are monitored, to allow members and the group to see the success of refer-rals and how they turned into real business. This highlights to the group exactly how much business is being passed through the chapter. Thanks to BNI’s referral marketing system, over 162 referrals has already passed through the Futurz group.

“This has been a great start for BNI Futurz, and we look forward to the advantages it will continue to bring to members’ businesses as they educate each other about their busi-nesses and the referrals they need.” Says KVT Ramesh, Executive Direc-tor.

The chapter was launched with 30 members, 51 visitors, 162 refer-rals passed, and Rs. 23.19 lakhs of business closed. LN Business saw businessmen present their referrals to other members, confronting their support to each other in the team. The launch witnessed lively business exchange and a flow of 50+ visitors who are gifted with the privileges by the members with discount vouch-ers.

learn and grow, as the then Varun group had just won the dealership for Maruti, only recently.

LNB: Today, you serve as the MD of the Automobile division, how has the company changed since you first joined it?

Varun: It is a pleasure that I am serving as a Managing Director of the Automobile division of the Varun group. The company has not stopped growing once, but has been growing as a group of companies, now diver-sified into automobiles, construction projects, among other projects. To-day, the Varun group has more than 9792 employees all of whom are full time employees. The Varun Au-tomobiles division alone, has about 6000+ employees in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Hyderabad put to-gether.

It’s no secret, that the compa-ny has come a very long way, from 1992 when Varun motors was a Bajaj dealer, and sold around 50 vehicles a month. Today, in Visakhapatnam alone more than 2000 vehicles are sold every month. That’s the kind of growth and success that the Varun group has seen and the journey that started in 1992, and then the expan-sion into Maruti in 1996 which was the headquarters in Visakhapatnam.

LNB: What were the guiding prin-ciples behind the Success of the company?

Varun: The Varun Group, as a company, relies on the principles of discipline, hard work and integrity .

NEXA? Was it an opportunity you had or did you look for it?

Varun: NEXA is a premium ex-perience provided to the customers. It is hospitality and an experience of a lifetime. Maruti is now known to be a common man’s car that is why Mar-uti started NEXA. It’s a business call. Maruti only gives their dealers NEXA. Their customers are getting up-graded to NEXA. Varun Automobiles does 50% of Nexa sales in AP. This is

possible mainly because of our deep rooted establishment, expansion and our network, and most importantly our loyal customer base.

LNB: What, in your opinion, is the reason behind ‘Visakhapatnam’ being Mr. Prabhu Kishore’s choice city for setting up shop during the early of Varun Group?

Varun: Even I was curious to know about this. My Dad studied MBA in HR and labour relation and industrial policies in Andhra Univer-sity. He saw Visakhapatnam and he fell in love with this city. The roads here, the beach the breeze. I think the city attracted him.

LNB: Could you tell us more about ‘MR. Prabhu Kishore’ the visionary, from your personal perspective?

Varun: My Dad was not only a visionary but that he was also a very positive person. What my dad saw was a developing country and that developing cities would need houses and transportation. And an entrepre-neur would look to building houses for the people, manufacturing and selling automobiles. This was one of the founding principles behind his entrepreneurship. His vision, as a concerned citizen of the environ-ment, would be to see the city em-bracing more electric and environ-ment friendly transportation means.

LNB: Based on your experience at the Varun Group, what do you think is the most important aspect of a business?

Varun: I believe that a busi-ness’s customer facing aspect is the most important one and that it should stay connected to the consumer and, equally well to the employee. If your employee is connected with you, they will keep the customers connected. And specifically in the automobile industry, Customer education is im-portant.

It is interesting to note a prac-tice that Varun Motors Pvt. Ltd. fol-lows, and has stayed in vogue over

the years, where ,after one month past the sale, calls to customers are made and appointments are sched-uled to assess how they are doing and , if need be, they are trained on a variety of other aspects surrounding the whole experience of owing a first automobile.

LNB: Now that Visakhapatnam, is transforming rapidly into a Smart City, What steps are in place for the Varun Group, to embrace this change?

Varun: With the right infra-structure in the right places, our company is ready for ‘Visakhapat-nam- the smart city’, in terms of not only expanding into new consumer markets but also along other vertical and horizontals, though there are no plans for expansions planned in auto-mobile category for now.

LNB: In today’s unforgiving and highly competitive market of Au-tomobiles, what does Varun Group stand for?

Varun: Today, Varun Group stands as the true epitome of entre-preneurship and elegance. I am truly enthralled that the team at LN Busi-ness is conferring the title of ‘Busi-ness Man of the Year 2015-16’ on my dad and the visionary Chairman of this phenomenal group, Shri Prabhu Kishore.

LNB: What advice would you give to the present day entrepreneurs who want to make it big out there?

Varun: Don’t get into the busi-ness for the want of the limelight and the power. Do it because you are pas-sionate about it, and never give up even on the darkest of nights. Do it, to bring about the change you have al-ways wanted to see. Be ambitious, but don’t get greedy. Never lose focus of the principles that drive you. Whether it is going to be a two many company or a twenty thousand employee com-pany, always stay connected with all of your employees. Work hard, dream big and success will be yours.

Expansion could qualify as a fair description for Shreyas of Relay Systems in more ways than one. In terms of size, vis-

ibility, reach or growth, the 39-year old shipping company still remains among the two who own their own vessels in Visakhapatnam. SRS is a member of the Transworld Group, based out of Dubai UAE. The group has been in the business of ship owning, Feeder operations, shipping agencies, ship management, Freight Forwarding, Contract Logistics and NVOCC operations.

In September, 2015 when the shipping industry was showing a downward trend, SRS took their first step into Visakhapatnam shipping market, with their corporate office in Mumbai. Prior to this, the com-pany was operating in Visakhapat-nam under an agency. SRS are devis-ing measure to transform the road transportation to transport through vessels, for best end to end cost cut-ting solutions. Central Government is supporting Costal transportation for the same. The company has its own trucks, Vessels, containers and expe-rienced logistics team without hav-ing to rely on partners. Gradually, the company is reaching the expectations it had when it arrived in Visakhapat-nam, says the Sales Executive of the Visakhapatnam Branch.

Within India, the exports are made from Calcutta, Tuticorin, Chen-nai and Mundra. Right now, they are trying to match the retails of Road Transportation. They offer both, Door to Door and Port to Port Services. But not the stevedoring service, which will be future service offering.

Though the present Shipping in-dustry is in a slow pace, SRS has its own set of Clients and have limited destinations outside India serving

only in Middle East Gulf ports Jabel Ali, Sharjah.

The exports include Minerals, Granites, Slabs, Shrimps, Fish, Meat, Coconuts. Right now the focus is more on exports relative to imports. An in-teresting thing is, there were just 10-15 vessels earlier but now the trend is different with close to 35-40 Ves-sels per month that narrows down to one vessel per day.

As long as the ports are active in Visakhapatnam, the shipping in-

dustry will not be affected. The main points of procurement for Cargo to Visakhapatnam is Bhimavaram and Kakinada. Mainly, Shrimps are re-ceived from Bhimavaram and which will be exported from Visakhapat-nam. But if Krishnapatnam port is completely into operations, there might be a scope that the Cargo will go to Krishnapatnam instead of Vi-sakhapatnam.

“Though, Krishnapatnam and Paradeep are taking the share of

SHIPPING SHREYAS

“The logistics company plans to set up more branches and aims to provide low cost and in house, end to end services in the global market and has its own market share in Visakhapatnam.”

Page 21: Business Destiny, May 2016

SHIPPING SHREYAS

imports, it doesn’t seem to affect Vi-sakhapatnam Port much as the trans-shipment from Calcutta to Mundra has to go only through Visakhapat-nam as Paradeep port is not for Con-tainers.” Says the sales manager.

Apart from MAERSEK, the only shipping Company which owns Ves-sels and Containers is Shreyas. More-over, currently, only two services are present to Jabel Ali and one of them is Shreyas and other is SimaTech.

Though it’s been seven months,

the company is on par in terms of per-formance relative to its other branch-es. For the shipping industry to thrive further, Visakhapatnam should have Manufacturing Industries. Pharma Industry is there but it isn’t great. Nevertheless, we might expect the growth in this industry as Govern-ment has started taking Pharma se-riously. Currently, there are 15 – 25 industries around Vijayanagarm but they aren’t functioning due to power issues. If Power tariffs are subsidized,

shipping industry will thrive again in Visakhapatnam.

“Right now shipping to other countries is a costly affair, as the rates have come down and China has started their own manufacturing for the good which it used to import. Nevertheless, Future of shipping will be good as Government is support-ing the coastal transportation and we definitely look forward for Visakha-patnam to achieve the boom and its past glory.” Says the sales manager.

EDUCATION Mr. PRAMOD KUMAR

subject that sounds boring to many people --- MATHEMATICS.

Mr. Pramod Kumar, a Vizagite by heart, finished his engineering from Aditya Engineering College, Tekkali, in the year 2010, with CSE as his spe-cialization. “My father wanted me to study further and was ready to sup-port me financially. But when I de-cided to stop studying, he gave me RS.5000/- and asked me to make my own living” recollects Pramod cheer-fully.

Pramod then moved to Hydera-bad and started working in various coaching institutes. Teaching was something that he liked; while Math

and English were his major strengths. After working for 6 months, he had a total savings of Rs.2 lakhs. So along with two partners namely Ashok and Shiva, Pramod set up his own coach-ing institute named IBS- INSTITUTE OF BANKING SERVICES on 6th Febru-ary, 2010. They put in an equal share of Rs.1.5 lakhs each and started this firm. The main motto of this insti-tute was to provide coaching for all the government job entrance exams. Experienced faculty was hired and the institute functioned successfully, earning them a profit of Rs.30 lakhs in a span of just 3 years.

And then life had some other plans for Mr. Pramod. In 2014, he took back his share from IBS and came back to Visakhapatnam to mar-ry the love of his life. In fact, he was also dedicated to her and helped her get into secured government job in SBI. While all of this was a part of his life, he didn’t stop planning about his own business. In June of 2014, he set up his own coaching institute in Vi-sakhapatnam namely, ‘PICE’ ---PRA-MOD’S INSTITUTE OF COMPETITIVE EXAMINATIONS with a total invest-ment of Rs.4 lakhs.

This institute ran successfully for a year and then he started fac-ing financial crisis. His institute was running out of infrastructure while the number of clients/ students kept increasing. So he shook hands with Datapro, Gajuwaka branch and amal-gamated these institutes with a 50-50 partnership. While ‘PICE’ taught only for banking services entrance exams, Datapro helped PICE by providing necessary infrastructure to cater to the growing business needs.

Today, we find both the institutes running marvelously, with a united motive of helping people with many career choices. While many business firms focus on attracting people with their unique ideas, this man chose teaching something that many of us are scared of. Kudos to him for having the patience to teach various concepts to people and help them get through the government jobs in India.

Many of us, upon finishing our studies, contemplate on setting up a business on our own. Starts ups

are the fad of today’s world which not only reap great benefits but also recognition; start-ups such as restau-rants, book stores, tech centers, show-rooms, import-export, fashion world, tattoo stores, event Management and what not. The more we think out of the box, the more colorful this world is. Start-ups have always done well whenever they were able to please the senses of people. But this particu-lar man had nothing glittery about his business idea. All he had was one

REAL HEROES HAVE

BIG DREAMS

By Ramya Srishailan

Mr.Dattu Prakash is the best example for what one man can do with just a big dream, passion and

determination. Many of us wake up in the morning and worry about fu-ture, work without feeling excited. But there are a few amongst us who surpass all such “Common-man” be-haviors and go beyond themselves to achieve great things. Dattu Prakash was a Chemistry graduate from Krish-na College who worked as a Quality control specialist in Sai Cements who

also spent his initial work-years in Quality assurance. But his dreams made him to change his job to a mar-keting manager.

His biggest dream back then, was to own a house. This dream made him quit his mundane job and shift-gears to a marketing job. His innate skill of convincing people made him turn everything he touched into gold. He started as a Medical Representative. He earned many appreciations and accolades right from the first months as a medical rep.

When he moved from the phar-ma company to Nicholas Pharma as a marketing manager, his legacy con-tinued. He was a top performer and earned awards every time. Prakash received awards at Nicholas Pharma for eight consecutive years. This is no small achievement by any stan-dard. What made these achievements worth his time for Dattu Prakash was, he not only received appreciation for his good work but the appreciation came with pay-cheques. Another dream come true for Dattu Prakash

“It might sound just like a movie scene that one man with a modest background could do so well in business. But his marketing strategies were so perfect to turn everything he touches into gold.”

at Nicholas was, he could take his mother to foreign trips as Nicholas was an MNC that organized its pres-tigious award ceremonies in foreign countries.

As a high-achiever, Dattu Prakash’s life was all glittery from the outside; with fat pay-cheques, ap-preciation, all his small dreams were coming true one by one. But still he was not as happy as he was supposed to be. Something was bothering him from inside.

Prakash thoughts turned en-trepreneurial when his mind con-stantly reminded him of the benefits he would reap if the same hard work and dedication were put into his own business. He was working for 16 hours a day at his company. He had no time for his family. He wanted to balance both achievement of his big dreams and spending quality time with the family. That’s when he start-ed to look out for options.

“I inspire from every business person observing their strategies and working style. I studied many proj-ects to start my own business, I con-sidered trading raw materials to the pharma companies/ corrugated in-dustry which is always in demand or to invest in agriculture. But I decided to get into real-estate business as the land transactions are soon going to reduce” Says Prakash

Dattu Prakash’s plan for a suc-cessful business is to “sell what is scarce”. As per the business cycle, anything that’s on a boom will have to see a downward trend. Since the real-estate is booming now, he ex-pects it to come down in a few years to come. Thus he decided on starting up a real-estate business. His market-ing experience had taught him to be-lieve in taking calculated risks. If he were to take a risk he wanted to what was in store for him. Thus he joined in a real estate company as a marketing executive just to gain first-hand infor-mation and experience in real-estate business. As is his nature, even in here he excelled. While he was asked to sell 10 plots, Dattu Prakash sold 50

plots. He was felicitated for his skill at marketing.

He then joined hands with a re-altor. “I learnt a lot about customer management, land legalities and many other nitty-gritties of real-estate business” says Prakash, rec-ollecting his times as a partner with that realtor.

the set-up of an estate which is per-fectly suitable for celebrities. In the meanwhile, he also made a transac-tion with Guru Schools.

He’s currently busy with his new layout, ‘SarojiniChandan gar-dens’. This is also a very unique proj-ect which earns him money not just because of the land but with time. He has planned sandalwood planta-tion in the layout, which has buyers. He spends on the maintenance of the plantation and when the trees ma-ture, he would have made money not just because of the plots in the layout but also because of the sandalwood trees.

In a span of one year he has fin-ished 4 layouts with the minimum capital he raised. His only marketing strategy is good will, “Everyone has to talk good about your layout.”

Majority of Vizagites are work-ing class people who are employed in various service sectors. They look for something safe to invest in. Thus Prakash says “offers based market or installment market are the most suitable.Since, most of the movement will be done in loan. Here the pur-chase capacity is less compared to Vijayawada and Guntur.”

Prakash is now planning an-other layout spanning across a big 50 acre land.

Not just a great businessman, Prakash is also a philanthropist. He is doing his part by helping Govern-ment school students, right from aca-demic fees to bus pass he takes care of all their expenses. A major social service which is being carried out by Dattu Prakash and his friends, is that they have adopted a village and have been working on the development of the village in terms of basic amenities among many other things.

Dattu Prakash’s suggestions for aspiring entrepreneurs; “First study your target market. You have work somewhere to get experience in the relevant business area and prepare yourself. How you present your land to your customer is the most impor-tant thing.”

In the year 2013 when Dattu Prakash finally decided to start his own business, he had no money to in-vest as he had already invested all his savings on his house and his family. At this point any common person like us would have given up. But he bought a land for 1 lakh rupees which he had received as incentives and sold the land for 10% more. Slowly, step by step Prakash reached to 5 lakh rupees in 3-5 months. He again doubled his Rs.5 lakhs with a short-term invest-ment in land. He borrowed another Rs.10 lakhs. With his investment, he planned his first layout in 1.72 acres of land in Kasapet and L Kota. Although the lands were off-road, he could successfully sell all the 30 plots to 5 families with good will and one-to-one publicity.

It might sound just like a movie scene that one man with a modest background could do so well in busi-ness. But his marketing strategies were so perfect to turn everything he touches into gold. His only strategy was, he contacted associations rather than approaching individual custom-ers.

With the same confidence, he purchased another land for 2 acres beside the same land and he expand-ed the same layout to 7 acres and cracked 80% sales in just 6 months.

Being an inventive marketing genius that he is, he planned “Celeb-rity Gardens” a 20 acres layout with

LN BUSINESS BUSINESSMAN OF THE YEAR

HOW DID WE SELECT BUSINESSMAN OF THE YEAR

PANEL DISCUSSION

7th May, 2013 was the day when LN Business, AP’s 1st business and economy Magazine got into newsstands and India’s

1st FREEMIUM business magazine, from Jan 2014. People around us have always tried thinking different and came up with many companies that are now running very successful-ly. But how many of them are able to see themselves in the media or news? In our country, where there are so many magazines to promote and talk about business in India, we are here to concentrate only on our own state, aspiring businessmen around us. We travel all along the districts of Andhra Pradesh and cover the success stories of various businessmen. Our sole aim is to bring the businessmen into lime light, whose stories are inspiring to the budding entrepreneurs.

When we launched our first edi-tion, we hit a target of 4000 copies. The crew members are mostly stu-dents and youngsters who took the initiative along with us. Everybody

First of all, I would congratulate LN Business magazine and

Ikhshvakh, for trying something new in a path breaking way,

as a young star you doing something very crazy. You and your

team, therefore deserve all compliments and good luck. I born

into a business family and from Vijayawada. The scenic beauty

of the ocean, the evergreen greenery always attracted me to the

city. People here are very nice.

It was the year 2000 when we shifted completely to Visakha-

patnam. People of these three districts have been very nice to

us, as well as to the company, they encouraged us, they trusted

us and they stood by us. From, 50 scooters, we have grown to

sales volume of 1 lakh vehicles, along with a huge workforce.

So it has been a very memorable, very satisfying and very hap-

py journey. In addition to automobiles, the hospitality division,

construction wing and other segments are also quite satisfying.

I’m both honoured and happy to take this award from

two rounds of discussion. The first round would be a brief evaluation of each contender with a quick yes or no from each panel member, on whether the contender deserved to progress to round two. If more than three pan-elists voted in favor, the contender progressed to round two.

The first on the list was Chair-man of a textile company, who has done a tremendous job in expanding the company and turnover and dem-onstrated his part of helping hand to the society. A quick poll indicated a majority and the Businessman was the first entrant into round two.

Next was the founder of a large infrastructure company with only single interest in infrastructure build-ing, while the panel commended his bold steps, their projects had fallen over the last 12 months. This was not his year, they decided.

The third contender was a busi-nesswoman who made best deal selling her software company to the MNC, along with it, inherited a host of responsibilities in the politics. The contender should not be in politics to be in businessperson of the year race.

The fourth contender was an en-trepreneur well known for his diversi-fication in hospitality and automobile industry. He made new landmarks to the city, and was acknowledged by the panel as a strong contender.

The fifth contender was another industrialist in the infrastructure space who has built some incredible projects and delivered them on time. But the drop in the new projects in hand was an issue. The panelists ap-plauded the industrialist’s level of achievement and vision, but this year is not the year of his successes.

The sixth candidate was a lead-ing player in the education and manufacturing sector, but he is a prominent leader in the ruling party. However, he is the last entrant to the round two.

Next up, was round two with four competent and smart business-

persons vying for the top position. The first elimination was the politi-cian, although the panel was very im-pressed with his achievements and performance.

With the three contenders left, the battle was tight between the tex-tile owner, infrastructure silhouette and the automobile industrialist. As discussions progressed, it quickly became clear that each panelist’s vote for the top position varied be-tween the textile entrepreneur and the infrastructure silhouette. Resul-tantly, the textile entrepreneur lost out. While his performance over the years has been stellar, the other two contenders had particularly outper-formed themselves this year.

With the two contenders left, the discussions grew intense over almost every aspect of their tenure, performance and governance. Both had inherited a strong base. The in-frastructure contender inherited a well performing channel from his associate, outperforming peers and doing wonders for the company’s market cap, as well as adding to the parent group’s overall revenues. On the other hand, the automobile en-trepreneur had inherited a large but floundering business empire. He set up a new mark with the highest risky venture in a tier2 city like Visakhpat-nam and essentially turned that from a crisis situation.

While the panel greatly admired the unbelievable aggression and per-formance of the automobile division with highest sales in India, eventually the man from the automobile indus-try took the top spot. The panel was particularly impressed with his vi-sion towards the business sector in Visakhapatnam.

And just like that, history was made at LN Business. For the 1st time, the award that is known as Business-man of the Year goes to automobile entrepreneur. The man is smart, ag-gressive and immensely courageous. He is Shri. Prabhu Kishore, Chairman, Varun Group. And LN Business’s Busi-nessman of the year FY 2015-16.

worked efficiently and our first edi-tion was a hit. The appreciations re-ceived were unexpected and most cherished. The same continued as we continued releasing our next editions too. People working here are locat-ed all over the globe with their own studies and careers but still they take time to bring you the write-ups.

Over this span of 3 years, we have managed to bring out the best stories so far and it was all due to the support and views on our magazine. But all of this was not just the hard work of ours. People who took the time to give us their interviews are more importantly to be appreciated. Designers worked instantly over ev-ery bit and piece to form a magnifi-cent magazine every time. Subscrip-tions are increasing day by day. This proves that we are worth referring to and talking about.

It has been an interesting year for Visakhpatnam. Business summits, increase in tourism industry, lot of business opportunities and Chief Min-ister Shri. Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s special interest on new revenue capi-tal made Visakhapatnam economic growth much better than past years. As we croosed the financial year, it was time to select the Business Man of the Year FY 2015-16.

The first task was putting to-gether a selection of able entrepre-neurs who convened together, to se-lect the winner. As a rule, the NEWS PAPERS ASSOCIATION OF INDIA – A.P STATE PRESIDENT heads the panel; this year, Sasi B.S.S was the panel head. The meeting began with LN Business founder Ikhshvakh K briefly explaining the general proce-dure, including the selection criterion and our shortlist of 6 contenders. The panel had the option to modify any criteria as they deemed fit. It is left to the panel to decide how to select a winner; whether through a discus-sion, a vote, process of elimination or a combination of any of the above methods. They were also free to sug-gest an additional contender. Based on this briefing, the panel decided on

“The Union government should fulfil all its promises made in the A.P. Re-organisation Act and the State gov-ernment would exert pressure on the issue, Mr. Naidu said while address-ing the media in Kadapa. Those work-ing against the interests of the State would not be spared.”

The government sanctioned Rs. 3 crore for distribution of buttermilk satchets to passersby to beat the heat, and Deputy Chief Minister K.E. Krish-namurthy would launch the centre. A sum of Rs. 100 crore was sanctioned for the development of Kurnool in view of the Kurnool Municipal Corpo-ration elections likely to be held in Au-gust/September.

“Centre will assist the State govern-ment in getting external aid (foreign assistance). Almost making it clear that the State should not depend on Cen-tral funds and package. The demand for special package is genuine. But, Mr. Naidu is an expert in getting exter-nal funding. If required, we will assist Andhra Pradesh in that direction. The package is very much prevalent in the corridors of power. As far as economy of Andhra is concerned, the State has potential to grow on a par with other States in a short span of time.”

The bill from these polishing units has been around Rs. 8.5 crore a month usually over the last few years. The payments from these units also used to be close to 99 per cent. However, the bill for the last month is around Rs. 3.5 crore and the payment around 85 per cent. We used to earn a meagre Rs. 5 per square foot of granite slab ear-lier when the raw material cost was around Rs. 2,200 for most coloured granite, while black colour was around Rs. 2,600. Today, the cost of raw mate-rial has gone up to Rs. 2,600 for other colours while black granite has gone up to almost RS. 3,600.

150 air-conditioned buses would be purchased for the TSRTC for an amount of Rs. 40 crore, and facilities would be

improved by spending Rs. 43 crore, within a short period. AC buses would be distributed among the districts depending on the requirement. Due to this, passengers travelling to dis-tant places can do so comfortably, he said. The RTC was plying 10,000 buses transporting 90 lakh passengers every day.

the market may not be worse this year in view of the stable global demand for tobacco. The reduction in demand for tobacco in the U.S. and other coun-tries was not much as in the previous years. The pace of the slowdown has come down in the U.S. there was a fall in production to the tune of 30 million kg in Zimbabwe, which exported 90 per cent of its produce to other coun-tries.

The trend is a little worrisome, These are protectionist tendencies and work as non-tariff measures impeding trade. We believe that more open market on both sides will help economic growth, but cannot be a one-way street where India is opening up and other coun-tries are erecting barriers.

EVENT STARTAP

Shravan shipping, the giant com-pany started by Mr.Sambashiva Rao has made its mark in the shipping industry not only in

Visakhapatnam but also in the state. It is now being helmed by his son Mr. Shravan Kumar who stands tall among the few responsible young 2nd generation businessmen of Andhra Pradesh.

LNB: Graduation in Mechanical Engineering, Masters in logistics, both subjects deal with the techni-cal side of shipping industry, was this pre planned groundwork for Shravan Shipping?

Shravan: I actually wanted to get into automobile engineering but that branch was not available in our state. So instead of shifting to Bangalore for studies, I chose to get into mechanical because that is pretty much close to automobile engineering.

LNB: Entry into Shravan shipping, was it your choice/ your father’s choice?

Shravan: When I was a child I used to come here just to see how the machinery would work and play with it. Slowly I understood the loading / unloading and other factors. I also started developing an interest in the business especially for the CFS. So it was totally my choice.

LNB: Once you chose to get into logistics, what kind of technical preparation did it involve?

Shravan: My technical experi-ence started after my graduation. However, when I wanted to go abroad for an MBA, they were asking for two years job experience. There I had two options, one was to join my father’s business and the other was to join an MNC. As I had already made up my

mind to join the family business post MBA, it was almost a preparation for my mind too. Along the way, I learned all the advantages and disadvantages of our very own company.

LNB: You have been associated with your company from the beginning, so you would not know the work-ing style of other companies. Is it not a disadvantage? Would you have preferred to go for any out of company experience?

Shravan: To an extent, I accept that; but ours is one of the fastest growing companies in Visakhapat-nam. In terms of technical cash flow, in terms of the stringent norms that we have, I’m pretty sure that we are the toughest guys to deal with. Having said that, I did work for six months at port of Dundee, Scotland.

Freight Stations) in Visakhapat-nam?

Shravan: For Visakhapnam, CFS is a totally next generation concept. This concept has been more common for big ports like Mumbai, Chennai and Mundra. Vizag is number one when it comes to the annual volume that it handles, but when you look at containerised volume it’s still in a primitive stage. Now the hinterland is supporting us. Still, comparatively Visakhapatnam is a virgin in terms of container handling.

LNB: Visakhapatnam being one of the oldest ports, why do you think it started late with the containers?

Shravan: Visakhapatnam has its industrial connectivity with all the bulk industries like steel plant and coal based industries for which they don’t need containers actually. For containers, the value of the product should be on the higher side. Unfor-tunately, Visakhapatnam has all the volume based industrial connectiv-ity.

LNB: Tell us something about the strengths & infrastructure of Shra-van CFS?

Shravan: We have one million square feet of warehousing in Gan-gavaram and Visakhapatnam. We are the only people in port area to oper-ate all the ware houses in our own land. We can proudly say that all our competitors are on port leased land. We have our cost advantage. 62 acres of one facility. 6 lakh sft of covered warehousing & 18acres. In Ganga-varam, we have acquired 52 acres of land in which we have constructed 2 lakh sft of warehousing already. We are coming up with second CFS in Gangavaram in nine months con-necting to Visakhapatnam port be-cause Gangavaram port has nothing to do with containers as of now. To-day this CFS is sufficient but 2 years down the line there will be a need more space which is a genuine rea-son for the expansion. We want to be one of the early start-ups over there.

There is no concept called liquid con-tainers because of the pharma zone coming in the full swing. We have a good amount of liquid chemical im-ports. We already have warehouses in Kakinada where we have given that on long lease to an offshore ac-tivity company. At Krishnapatnam we are yet to acquire land. Before that we want to start a FTWZ( free trade warehousing zone/ foreign territory/offshore lands) in Vizag for which we have acquired 100 acres of land. This concept was started in Mumbai SEZ which is in Thadi.

Shravan: In terms of the op-erational, we have two divisions one is CFS and the other is bulk division. There is a dedicated operational core team to handle operations. When it comes to finance, three charted ac-countants are working with us. For the projects that are in the pipeline, we want to get into IPO which will take its own sweet time.

LNB: You made your mark with first CFS (private sector) in Andhra Pradesh? What’s next?

Shravan: First ETP in Andhra Pradesh and then FTWZ.

LNB: Your father will be with or on you for decisions?

Shravan: Mostly we both have breakfast meetings in the morning. If he knows what am doing, he gives suggestions on how to get it done dif-ferently.

LNB: AIM?Shravan: We want to be the best

logistics provider in the East coast of India.

LNB: Backward & forward integra-tion?

Shravan: We want to enter into three pl logistics, like it’s almost tak-ing up the distribution network for the companies. End to end logistics is something we are looking at.

LNB: If big companies like yours enter into end-to- end logistics, what is the market share that you would capture? The logistics are very much affected when the mar-ket is down. So how do you handle this?

Shravan: The Indian popula-tion, which I would consider a bless-ing. When it comes to logistics, there are many companies doing this. Defi-nitely the logistics are affected when the market is down, but we have an advantage in terms of infrastructure. So we are free to experiment once in a while.

LNB: How do you feel entering so young into this field?

Shravan: When I entered into the business I was not the only one managing the show. My dad was al-ways there for me, I used to look after a division. He used to correct/guide me at every step. It was difficult con-necting with my father for the first 2 years. When I went out for business purpose I was always recognized as Mr. Rao’s son.

LNB: What is your biggest respon-sibility at Shravan shipping & what are the blind spots that worry you?

Shravan: The distance between the working class and management is growing day by day. So, my huge re-sponsibility is to maintain good rela-tions between the two.

LNB: Tell us about your working procedure which makes it profes-sional?

“We have 67 staff solely for man-

agement ; other staff we have 700

members including union because

we have a huge fleet. Coming to

machinery, we have 16 forklifts,

12 hydra cranes, 6 reach stakes,

40 trailers, 24 dumpers.”

Page 33: Business Destiny, May 2016

LNB: Are you planning to expand to other sectors or do you wish to confine yourself to logistics?

Shravan: We plan to expand the company to hospitality sector for a business hotel in the city considering the land banks we have. We already have a land in Yarada where we are planning a resort.

LNB: Who is your role model?Shravan: My one and only role

model is my father. I have seen him working very hard for the past 20 years. His only principle is that he works for 18 hours a day.

LNB: In business what’s your most precious learning from your fa-ther?

Shravan: My father is a self-made man who is straight forward, which is very difficult in this mod-ernized world. One more thing I al-ways wanted to learn but could not, is that he never says no to anybody in business. When this facility was constructed, this was a raw land in which he had signed a contract with a company way back in 2001. He con-structed a 20000 sft warehouse and a boundary wall in 42 days as per the contract.

LNB: What is the equipment and staff you have for CFS?

Shravan: We have 67 staff solely for management ; other staff we have 700 members including union be-cause we have a huge fleet. Coming to machinery, we have 16 forklifts, 12 hydra cranes, 6 reach stakes, 40 trailers, 24 dumpers and we are the only ones who have reach stakes for empty handling.

LNB: What is the best episode so far in your 5 years of business journey?

Shravan: Two years back I went for a meeting with Deloitte. There the PEE terms and conditions were not up to the standards. Instead of drag-ging the meeting, within fifteen min-utes I told them that this was base-

less and that I could not work with all these terms and conditions. Later, during lunch the PEE head called and told me that I would do well in life be-cause I’m not dragging issues.

LNB: How do your ideas differ from your father’s?

Shravan: As such we don’t dif-fer in ideology. My dad prefers asset based business and I prefer cash flow business.

LNB: What’s your favourite proj-ect?

Shravan: The one which is los-ing is my favorite project. We have to spend more time on that just like our machinery division.

LNB: Your native Prakasam? Are you anywhere connected with that?

Shravan: We have certain CSR activities, my father is particularly funding a few government schools.

THE WAYF O R W A R DAROMATIC CHEMICAL FACTORY

The famous quote, “The dis-tance between your dreams and reality is called action”, is so true with this dynamic

person, Mrs.Sarvalakshmi Avadhanu-la! The journey of Mrs.SarvaLakshmi had a humble beginning. From a self-employed entrepreneur to an Indus-trialist is an inspiring tale to many aspiring businesswomen.

She has seen it all. From taking calculated risks to many employment issues, MNC competitors to introduc-ing new products, market dominat-ing strategies to owning chemical formulae in her journey to the top. She not only saw but succeeded with most tests of time. What would hap-pen from now would undoubtedly determine her legacy!

She is a native of Visakhapat-nam hailing from a family of Ex-Ser-vicemen. She graduated in Chemistry from St. Joseph College (Visakhap-atnam) in 1977. She always wanted to be financially independent and dreamt of the same when she was in the college

Immediately after graduation, she got married to Mr. Avadhanula Vi-jayam, a small agro-based business-man in Seetarampuram and migrated

to her husband’s place at Seetarama-puram, a village close to Narsipatnam in 1978.

Her Father-in-law was an in-dustrialist in Chennai. Initially, he encouraged her to start a food based industry so that she can contribute to the society by creating employ-ment opportunities to the needy. Sarvalakshmi recollects those good old times, “I used to write all the ac-counts of our family business under the supervision of my Father-in-law. That is how my journey into business started and gradually I developed interest towards it.” She came back to Visakhapatnam, to admit her two sons in Timpany school.

During this period, The Andhra Pradesh state Government through The Integrated Tribal Development Agency, Paderu, encouraged her husband to setup a Distillation plant In Chintapalli for the extraction of Natural Essential Oils like Citronella ,Lemon Grass , Palmarosa, Cinnamon, also encouraged the Tribal farmers to take up their cultivation in a large way. Mr.Vijayam has formed a Co-operative Society sacrificing a lot of business prospects in the city, staying in a remote area, most profits of that

company are being ploughed back to the Tribals.

She elaborates on her first ven-ture, “My husband’s is an Agro-based industry and faraway from here and I thought of starting some food chemi-cal industry on my own. That is our family business. In the 1980’s the market was slowly growing towards food-flavouring emulsions, (Soft drink concentrates) used by hun-dreds of Soft Drink Bottling Compa-nies like Artos, Baajal and many other in the Coastal Districts of Andhra. Those days farmers used to consume these drinks a lot. The Devastating ef-fect of the entry of MNC’s like Pepsi and Cocacola, Washedout all local bottling companies , guess only a few remain”, says Sarvalakshmi.

However, she was clear about the project and what she wants. She started moving her ideas to action. Mrs. Sarvalakshmi talks about how she started, “I took training in CFTRI (Central Food and Tecnological Re-search Institute, Mysore) and used to learn a lot of techniques and safety measures. We bought a 3000 sq.ft house in Pendurthi town with a bank loan, close to the city. We started Aro-matic Chemical & Oil Company, as a home based small scale industry, with food flavoring emulsions as our first product.” She was one-man army. She did every thing in the operations, right from typing invoice to major Blending. It was not smooth sailing though. The Government of India suddenly took a decision to ban the use of Brominated Vegetable Oil an important ingredient in flavor emul-sion just before our product reached the market. Then the government decision to ban the usage of BVO was a very big hurdle at the very initial stage itself. At this crucial stage, she did not get discouraged, but started thinking of alternate ways to get the same product. Constant referral of many books and figuring out techno-logical changes which handled that requirement was her regular endeav-or during that time. Again she opted for CFTRI training.

All re-work on the alternatives fructified, “We started the unit with another substitute product. Our unit was sailing good and with number of bottling units we never had a mar-keting problem with the demand. Then slowly we started competing with MNC giants in the industry. We used to maintain our supply compet-ing with them.” She said. However, another irritant was lurking close-by after 3 years of running the unit; the Aromatic company received their first complaint from a neighbour who was a homeopathy medicine manu-facturer. She was left with no option but to shift from Pendurti town.

However, fortune was round the corner in the name of Sri N.T. Rama Rao, the erstwhile Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, who passed a new G. O of single shot registration to fa-cilitate entrepreneurs in the indus-trial estates. She recollects of shift-ing their industry from Pendurthi, to Visakhapatnam Industrial estate, we approached SBI and got a loan of `5.5 lakh. “We shifted the machinery and rebuilt to start our operations again, With increased staff, my husband used to run the unit in Chintapalli and used to help me whenever need-ed. We reached break even slowly as demand picked up for our products and introduced several new products. Our competition with MNC’s was also growing up and at a certain time it was challenging to convince our deal-ers who were influenced by MNC’s offers and tactics. Support from Gov-ernment was minimal, yet we crossed all the hurdles one after the other. Thereafter, over the years, we adopt-ed new technologies and added new products.” Says Sarvalakshmi.

Increasing product range and packaging she never diversified to other business but she studied every minor aspect in this industry to it’s depth. Her education in chemistry was also indeed a boon. She got into research on a bigger platform and delivered indigenous formulae which helped them deliver new products at competitive prices.

During this journey, her expan-sion to new markets suddenly hit a speed breaker, however she turned around that phase with business acu-men which indeed is praiseworthy! She says, “Even we had few losses in the factory. To compete with oth-er companies for the first time we have appointed salesmen in Chennai, Hyderabad and other major cities. In 1997, there were good sales but in 2004 we had lot of outstanding in the market. We got busy in the work and concentrated less on the accounts. Then income generation was no way balancing interest cost of loans. Then the first thing I did was to fire all the sales team by 2008, my study also gave me a clearer picture of all the wrong transactions and wrong doings of the sales persons. This is an impor-tant lesson I have learned, till date we don’t have sales men for our compa-ny. Of course, new business will slow down. But I can’t risk my company’s reputation. Then I have devised my new strategy, I announced that all the sales men were laid off and offered the dealers, those savings to be divid-

ed amongst themselves. This strategy doubled our sales and gave us good business and my idea worked.

On the personal front, both her sons Apparao Avadhanula and Aditya Avadhanula have settled good in busi-ness in the US and are making big for-tunes in their desired business units.

On the future, Mrs. Sarvalaksh-mi says, “As long as the unit runs, we will introduce new products and de-velop existing products as per client requirements, I will strive my best to give good life to my employees. Oth-erwise, no future plans. Every year we have something new, something good. After my retirement, my second son, a Chemical Engineer is going to run this company.”

“Initially I was not well-settled; I just had minimum capital and many ideas when I first came to Visakhap-atnam. Every investment made was risky, and this City of Destiny helped me to become financially indepen-dent as I dreamt”. My advice to up-coming Women Entrepreneurs is to follow their true passion automati-cally success will be ensured”.

India, the most populated country. A glance at the numbers on our metropolitan cities throw up an amazing statistics – Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkatta, Hyderabad and Chennai are each home to more people than some small countries. Even rapid urbanization is taking place in tier 2 cities

like Visakhapatnam with population growth even at the out skirts of the city. This probably explains why reality in Visakhapatnam is such a thriving business. People need homes, lands to invest it’s as simple as that, just as the words of Sreemithra townships “Land remains same with the number of people increasing rapidly.” Homes are now springing up in every nook and corner of Visakhapatnam city and layouts in every part of the district. But in a business where there are so many players, how does one stand out from the rest with the competition? Observing the factors that separate the best from rest in business. The emerging builders in the city are increasingly displaying this quality in order to influence the decision making process of the buyers.
