Microsoft to set up 10 AI labs,train 5 lakh youth in India

Bengaluru, Microsoft India on Wednesday announced to set

up Artificial Intelligence (AI) labs in 10 universities andtrain five lakh youth across the country in disruptingtechnologies. The company also said it will upskill over10,000 developers over the next three years.

“We believe AI will enable Indian businesses andmore for India’s progress, especially in education,skilling, healthcare and agriculture,” said AnantMaheshwari, President, Microsoft India.

Microsoft AI today is fuelling digital transformationfor over 700 customers and 60 per cent customers arelarge manufacturing and financial servicesenterprises.Over 700 partners have geared up to sup-port the AI ecosystem, said the company.

Microsoft in December announced a three-year “In-telligent Cloud Hub” collaborative programme in In-dia, for empowering institutes to skill students in AI andCloud technologies.India is one of the first countriesto have such a programme in which Microsoft will sup-port selected institutes that have the best-in-class in-frastructure, curriculum and content, onsite training forfaculty and students, access for participating studentsto Cloud and AI services, developmental tools and de-veloper support.

Singapore’s Scoot airlineto expand service in India

Chennai, Low-cost airline Scoot, a part of the

Singapore Airlines Group, on Thursday an-nounced the addition of three new southIndian cities — Coimbatore, Trivandrumand Visakhapatnam — to its global routemap. In a statement issued here, Scoot saidthe three new routes are due to be trans-ferred over from sister airline SilkAir.

Following that, Scoot will be the onlyairline operating direct non-stop flightsfrom Trivandrum and Visakhapatnam toSingapore. “Flights from Trivandrum toSingapore will commence as soon as May7, and flights from Coimbatore andVisakhapatnam will start from October 27,all subject to regulatory approval,” thestatement said.

In India, Scoot already operates sevenexisting routes from Amritsar, Bengaluru,Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Lucknow andTiruchirappalli.

To commemorate the new routes, Scoothas introduced a major limited-time sale onflights from all its India points, includingTrivandrum, Coimbatore andVisakhapatnam, from January 14 to 28 onits website. One-way promotional fares (in-clusive of tax) begin from Rs 4,500 forEconomy FLY, for trips to 27 cities in Aus-tralia, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Phil-ippines and Vietnam via Singapore.

Edutech firm Byju’s buys US-based Osmo for $120 mn

Bengaluru, Online tutoring platform Byju’s

on Thursday said it has acquired US-based learning platform Osmo for$120 million (Rs 850 crore).

“After the acquisition, Osmo willcontinue to scale as a standalonebrand as Byju’s taps the company’sphysical-to-digital technology andcontent to expand and enhance itscurrent offering,” the city-basedcompany said in a statement.

The firm, however, did not dis-close the nature of the acquisition.

The acquisition will help Byju’sinternational plans to innovate, ex-plore and set benchmarks for tech-enabled personalised learning solu-tions, the statement said.

Osmo is a playful learning sys-tem which aims to create healthy

screen-time experience for children.“With the integration of Osmo,

Byju’s will also look to offer a unique,customised, engaging and funlearning solution for younger kids,”the company said.

Osmo’s Chief Executive PramodSharma, along with the core teamwill continue to remain with thecompany post acquisition.

“Our vision is to make learningfun and engaging across agegroups and geographies,” Byju’sChief Executive Byju Raveendransaid in the statement. “With this ac-quisition, we are expanding into anew age demographic of youngerkids (age group three-eight),” headded. The company said it is on tar-get to triple its revenue to Rs 1,400crore in 2019.
