RoxyAnn Winery was founded in 2002 at the historic Hillcrest Or-chard in east Medford that has been bearing fruit for over 100years. Today, RoxyAnn Winery handcrafts bold and exciting winesthat possess tremendous color, complexity and depth of flavor. Ourwinemaking relies upon a balanced and gentle process that fully ex-presses the unique attributes of the vineyard in our wines. Rox-yAnn's extraordinary vineyard is located on the southwest slopes ofRoxy Ann Peak; where the property's shallow, limestone-clay soilsand southern solar exposure is ideally suited to producing Cabernetsauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet franc, Grenache, Tempranillo,Viognier and Syrah.

In 2005 Jacksonville Vineyards completed construction of Fiasco Winery. With its completion, our vines-to-wines Estate production capacity is inplace, a significant step for us. Pamela and Dave are dedicated to grapegrowing and wine making in exactly the styles and high quality methodslearned through years of study with vineyards and wineries locally, in Eu-rope, and in Australia. All of our wines are aged in 100% French oak bar-rels, some briefly, like our Blush Syrah or White Zin, while others like ourbarrel fermented Chardonnay, our Claret and Cabernet Sauvignon, areaged for extended years in French oak.

Celebrity Pets Corner

While sitting in my chairyesterday at my com-puter, my 3 year old

Gordon Setter, Buster Browncame over and with his pawslapped my arm, demanding at-tention. Although he knows thatdoesn’t make me happy be-cause it hurts, he forgets - justlike a typical teenager – “Ohgee Mom, I’m sorry, I forgot”. One thing you have to know

about Buster Brown is that hethinks he is a little cuddly lapdog…all sixty-nine pounds ofhim! He starts out by putting thefront part of his body on my lapwith his back part still touchingthe floor. He then slowly butsurely manages to get his entirebody up on my lap. Of course, there is no consideration ofcomfort for me at all! And what’seven more unpleasant is when Itake a sniff and realize that hesmells! Whoa, does he smell. He needs a bath! Are you familiar with that

“doggie” smell? Know what I’mtalking about? It’s the kind ofsmell that stays on your handafter you have given your bestfriend his pets for the day. Thebad news is that pets don’t mindsmelling like that! But, don’t fret. The good news is that washingyour dog today isn’t much of aproblem. The shampoos thatare offered for pet bathing don’thave the harmful harsh ingredi-ents used in the past whichmakes it safe to wash as often

as you need. And giving yourpet a bath is easier becauseyou have more choices thanever. Take them to a groomer, wash them yourself at home, orseek out a selfservice pet washlike Celebrity Pets in White Citythat has elevated tubs and forone price provides everythingyou could possibly need for get-ting rid of that “doggie smell”. But whether you do the

bathing yourself at a self-ser-vice dog wash, or at home, below is information that willmake sure the bathing experi-ence is the best that it can befor you and your pet.

Bathing your Pet1. Brushing your pet before youbathe is always a good policy. Itwill get rid of dead loose hairthat doesn’t need to be washedand foreign objects like burrsand stickers that might be em-bedded in the coat. Brushingyour pet gives you an opportu-nity to check his body for lumps, bumps, fleas and ticks, or anyother problems they may be ex-periencing. Always put your fin-ger in between their toes andfeel up in the well to make cer-tain that there are no objectslodged there. Also check theirears and clean them. Foxtailscan be dangerous to dogs and ifthey get embedded in the skinthey can travel through the bodyinto the blood stream. Addition-ally, brushing allows you toidentify areas that are mattedand work on getting out themats before bathing. Washing

matted hair makes mats tighterand more difficult to get out soit’s best to take care of thosebefore wetting the dog. Whenbrushing your pet, make surethat you brush all the waythrough the hair to the skin withan undercoat rake* being care-ful to not push hard and scrapethe skin or hurt the dog. Think ofmats on a dog like wearing yourhair in a pony tail and havingthe uncomfortable feeling ofhairs being pulled too tight! Mat-ted hair gets pulled tighter andtighter and eventually cancause sores on your pet sobrushing them out regularly isnecessary to keep your dogcomfortable and healthy. If matsin your dogs fur are plentiful anddifficult to remove demattingtools and bathing products* areavailable to help with theprocess. If your dogs coat isshort, brushing their fur with arubber scrubby* prior to bathingwill not only please your dog butit will take out loose hair thatyou see on your furniture andfloor every day.

2. When it’s time to start thewashing process, make surethat you have all the properequipment needed right besideyou. Try and find a comfortablespot for you and for your dog. Most dogs don’t like the bathingprocess but they will tolerate it,and some dogs hate it. Whetheryou are bathing your dog athome or at a self-service facility,be calm and assertive. Drag-ging your pet into a bathing

area on the end of a leash canbe very stressful for him. Calmlybring him to the washing areaand with a self-assuring voicespeak to him letting him knowthat all is ok. It’s all about trustwith a dog. If you let him knowyou are the leader and he cantrust you he should respond fa-vorably. And remember, he isnot deaf; you don’t need to yell!If you are washing your dog athome, try and secure him sothat he feels safe and you canhave both hands free forbathing. And PLEASE usewarm water. Lakes and pondsare ok for swimming but not forbaths! If bath time is a pleasanttime for your dog, they will getbetter and better with eachbath; even if they don’t like it!!

3. Wet your dog thoroughly be-fore you introduce the sham-poo. Apply a large amount of*dog shampoo to your dogs wetcoat and work your hands (oruse a rubber scrubby) throughthe fur all the way down to theskin. The “doggie smell” iscaused by bacteria. Bacteriacan be washed away; however, you must give the soap enoughtime to “adhere” to it. If you putthe soap on and immediatelywash it off, the bacteria will re-main and the “doggie smell” willreturn in about three days. Let itsit on your dog for a few min-utes. If your dog is extremelydirty or muddy, you may want torinse and then repeat the sham-poo process again, using ashampoo/conditioner made for

dogs*. It will leave your petsmelling and looking their best. It’s very important to make cer-tain that your dog is rinsed thor-oughly. Rinse him until you aresure all the soap has been re-moved; then rinse him again!Don’t forget to towel dry yourdog. That is the best part of thebath for them! You will see themsmiling as you rub them down! Most dogs will roll themselveson carpet (or lawn or DIRT) inan effort to dry themselves, sothe dryer you can get them theless chance they will “roll”. DONOT use a home hair dryer onyour pet unless you use the “aironly” cycle. Using hot air to dryyour pet can be dangerous.Dogs do not have sweat glandslike we do and they overheatmuch quicker which puts themunder stress. Stress can kill ani-mals. Professional groomersand self-service dog washesuse professional “air” dryersthat are safe for your pets. These air dryers will also blowout any loose hair left on thedog so you don’t have to bring itback into your home!

We’ve not seen a dog in ourshop yet who finished his/herbath that isn’t truly happy andexcited when they are clean. They know that they are gor-geous and they strut their stuffstraight to the front door!

Aries(March 21 - April 20)A week to bring balance around. This week you will feel little bit out ofsync and would like to bring the harmony around. It is necessary to makeyour personal relations smooth as when you happy inside then you willyourself shine outside too that will enable you to work more smoothly.

Taurus(Apr. 21- May 21)You have a desire to beautify your surroundings and now is the timefor it. If nances are an issue, leave credit cards at home while shopping.Romance and social life is favored. If you encounter an issue in whichyour heart says one thing and your mind another, set the decision asidea few days.

Gemini(May 22 - June 21 )This is a ne time to organize and plan for the future. Your attitude maybe fairly serious because you know the things you do now will a"ectyou for quite a time to come. If you encounter a decision that juxtaposesyour heart and mind, set it aside until a better time.

Cancer(June 22 - July 22)This is a ne time to organize and plan for the future. Your attitude maybe fairly serious because you know the things you do now will a"ectyou for quite a time to come. If you encounter a decision that juxtaposesyour heart and mind, set it aside until a better time.

Leo(July 23 - Aug 22)You may be talking more this week than you have in a month. Takecare to listen carefully to the other, lest you be misunderstood. It maybe di&cult to elicit comment from your partner or signicant other, who seems to be evasive or invisible at present. Aspects favor traveland education.

Virgo(Aug. 23 - Sept. 23)You'll be able to easily unbend your mind and unwind, this week andthe next few weeks. You'll have lots of fun with your friends. Exactly asduring your best years, you enjoy making fun and going to the theatreand to concerts. It is going to be a light-hearted, carefree time duringwhich you are able to unwind and relax and do a great deal of work atthe same time.

Libra(Sept. 24 -Oct. 23)All your new aspects are good ones this week. Travel, education, sociallife, romance, activities involving the law and/or the internet all yield"go" signals. This is another favorable week for a vacation. Venus, yourruling planet, is taking life easy for a time this month.

Scorpio(Oct. 24 - Nov. 22)This is a time when you can expect a little boost, some extra supportor recognition from those around you. You may feel that you are intouch and in harmony with others; the lines of communication areopen.

Sagittarius(Nov. 23 -Dec. 21)This is going to be a remarkable week for you, dear Sagittarius! All thosecoinciding constellations in your horoscope will have a brief, but im-portant in/uence on you. Watch out for people who try to wheedleyou, with their sweet talk, into doing things you know full well aren'tpossible.

Capricorn (Dec 22.- Jan. 20)You and another are diligently working out a plan that will take youup the career ladder eventually. APPLEGATE RESERVOIR: trout, spring chinook, largemouth bass, smallmouth bassThe reservoir is stocked with legal-sized rainbow trout and juvenilespring chinook salmon. Anglers targeting trout and spring chinook willwant to fish deep during the warm months of summer. Fishing forsmallmouth bass is very good for boats casting along the shoreline. The reservoir is 38 percent full as of Sept. 8.

BEN IRVING RESERVOIR: rainbow trout, bass, bluegill, yellowperch, crappieBen Irving Reservoir, west of Winston, was stocked in 2009 with5,000 trout, including 1,000 weighing 1.5-2 lbs. This year more than4,000 trout have been stocked so far. Ben Irving will get an additionalstocking of 1,000 lunker trout for Labor Day Weekend. In addition totrout, anglers should also try fishing for some of the large crappie thatare available.

CHETCO RIVER: ChinookAnglers are reminded that new regulations are in effect for the ChetcoRiver mainstem. Starting Aug. 1 and running through Nov. 5 the main-stem of the Chetco River upstream of the BPA powerlines (river mile2.2) is closed to all angling. The tributaries are still open per the zoneregulations. No recent reports, but chinook should start moving intothe Chetco River estuary anytime.

COOPER CREEK RESERVOIR: rainbow troutCooper Creek was stocked in 2009 with about 11,050 trout, of which2,000 were 1.5-2 lbs each. Cooper Creek now has 9,800 trout stockedso far in 2010 and will be stocked with 2,000 Labor Day lunkers.

COOS RIVER BASIN: trout, chinook salmon, sardines, Dungenesscrab, clamsTrout fishing in the bay and rivers is open. The use of bait is allowedin streams from Sept. 1 until the close of the trout season on Oct. 31. Chinook fishing continues to be very good Coos Bay. Anglers arespread out from the Highway 101 Bridge up to the Millicoma andSouth Fork Coos rivers. The best fishing has occurred in the Marsh-field Channel up to the “forks” of the Coos River. Trolling cut plug her-ring or sardines have produced the most fish. If you don’t have a boata good place to bank fish this time of year is at the end of Ferry Roadin North Bend or at the mouth of Daniels Creek in the South ForkCoos River. Anglers are reminded that there will be not be a wild cohofishery in the Coos Basin in 2010. Jigging for sardines and smallerherring in the Charleston Boat Basin has been excellent. Fishing forsardines is a great way to get kids excited about catching fish. Catch-ing two or more sardines at a time is common. The sardines havebeen very spooky on calm, sunny days so you may have to adjustyour jigging technique to how the fish are reacting. Best success willbe with small herring jigs. Remember to throw back juvenile salmon. All recreational razor clam harvest is closed from Bandon north toCascade Head. The closure is due to elevated levels of domoic acid. There will be good negative tides very early in the morning during theweek. Good places to dig for clams in Coos Bay are near Charleston, off Cape Arago Highway, and Clam Island. For more information onshellfish in Coos Bay click on the following link: Shellfish Assessmentof Coastal Oregon. Before any shellfish harvest trip, make sure tocheck the Oregon Department of Agriculture website for any updates.Crabbing has been good for those crabbing from boats but slow forthose crabbing from the docks. The best crabbing areas from a boathave been near the jetties. Red rock crabs are the main harvest fromthe docks. The best baits to use are fish, chicken or turkey legs.

COQUILLE RIVER BASIN: trout, chinook salmon, Dungeness crabsTrout fishing in the bay and rivers is open. The use of bait is allowed instreams from Sept. 1 until the close of the trout season on Oct. 31. Chinook salmon fishing on the lower Coquille River was very good thispast week. The best area to fish has been near the Highway 101Bridge and near Rocky Point Boat Ramp. Trolling cut plug herring orsardines have been the best baits. The wild coho salmon seasonopened on Sept. 1 in the lower Coquille River and will continuethrough Nov. 30 or until the quota of 1,200 wild coho adults is attained. The deadline for the coho fishery is the Highway 42S Bridge near Stur-divant Park in Coquille. The limit for is one wild coho adult per day andfive for the season. Crabbing for Dungeness crabs off the Bandondocks and from boats in the lower Coquille River has been good.

DIAMOND LAKE: rainbow troutFishing has improved with the cooler temperatures. Most anglers areusing PowerBait and spinners just off the bottom. Fish are ranging insize from 8 to over 20 inches long. Anglers are reminded that onlyone trout over 20 inches long can be harvested per day. DiamondLake Campground is closed for the season due to construction. Bro-ken Arrow and Theilson View Campgrounds will remain open untilOct. 31. Contact the resort for the latest fishing news at 1-800-733-7593 ext. 238.

EMIGRANT RESERVOIR: rainbow trout, largemouth bass, small-mouth bass, black crappieTrout anglers will want to fish deeper areas of the lake, such as nearthe dam. Fishing for bass and panfish should be good. The reservoiris 46 percent full as of Aug 31. Anglers should be aware that a healthadvisory has been issued recommending limits on consumption of allfish from Emigrant except rainbow trout. Information on the EmigrantReservoir advisory, along with general information on mercury andfish can be found on the DHS Web site.

FISH LAKE: rainbow trout, brook trout, spring chinookFish Lake has been producing good numbers of trout despite decreas-ing water levels. The lake is down to 37 percent of capacity as of Sept.8, but boats are still able to launch at the Forest Service boat ramp.Trout have been ranging in size from 8-13 inches, and boat anglershave done well still-fishing with bait. Trollers often fish needlefish, wed-ding ring and worm combinations, panther martins, and any lure withfluorescent reds and greens. Anglers fishing bait will catch trout onPowerBait, Velveeta cheese, and worms. Juvenile spring chinooksalmon have been stocked in Fish Lake as part of a pilot project.ODFW is releasing the fish to see if they will feed on the exotic tuichub and fathead minnows in the lake, grow to a large size, and add tothe diversity of angling opportunity in the Rogue Valley. Some of thefish are nearing legal size, and should be entering the fishery this year.

FLORAS LAKE: rainbow trout, cutthroat troutBank access is limited, so most anglers launch a boat at Boice CopeCounty Park. Slow trolling wedding ring spinners or fly fishing arepretty effective.

GALESVILLE RESERVIOR: rainbow trout, bassGalesville Reservoir is open to angling year-round. In addition to trout, the reservoir has also been stocked with coho smolts the last coupleyears. Coho stocked last year are about 12 to 14 inches long now andhave been biting recently. About 13,000 more coho smolts werestocked this spring. They should be legal-sized this summer. All of thecoho smolts have been adipose fin-clipped. In Galesville Reservoir, alllandlocked salmon are considered trout. Thus, there is a five per daytrout limit, with only one trout over 20 inches in length allowed for har-vest. Galesville was also stocked with about 1,000 adipose clippedsteelhead that are 8-inches long. To date Galesville has been stockedwith about 8,000 legal sized trout. Anglers are reminded all bass be-tween 12 and 15 inches must be released, and only one bass over 15inches may be taken per day. Galesville now has a campground. Call541-837-3302 for information on camping and boat launching condi-tions.

GARRISON LAKE: rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, bassGarrison Lake is located in the middle of Port Orford. Weed growth ismaking things a little tough, but anglers finding open water are stillpicking up trout. Boat anglers are reminded to clean all aquatic vege-tation off their boats and trailers before heading home to help controlthe spread non-native plants and animals.

HOWARD PRAIRIE RESERVOIR: trout, bassRecent cool weather should improve trout prospects at higher eleva-tion lakes such as Howard Prairie. Anglers will want to fish early in themorning or in the evening for best success, and most anglers havebeen still fishing with yellow or green floating bait. Some anglers con-tinue to troll for trout with either a Tazmanian Devil or flasher andlure/bait combinations. The Willow Point boat ramp is closed due toconstruction. Bass, brown bullhead, and pumpkinseed are also avail-able. Howard Prairie is 65 percent full as of Sept. 8.

HYATT LAKE: trout, largemouth bassHyatt Lake is stocked with rainbow trout, and fishing may pick up withrecent cool weather, but anglers will likely have best success onlargemouth bass. Fishing for largemouth bass is very good. Hyatt ismanaged to provide fisheries for both rainbow trout and largemouthbass, but a large population of small-sized bass has dominated thelake in recent years. The fish are 7-8 inches in length. For anglerswho keep bass, these small bass offer a good chance to take somebass home for the table. The fish are easy to catch in the warm sum-mer months, and present a nice family fishing opportunity. Anglersmay keep up to five bass per day. Hyatt was 73 percent

LEMOLO RESERVOIR: rainbow trout, brown troutRecently anglers have reported catching limits of browns and rain-bows at Lemolo by trolling from 8 to 71 feet deep. Small spinners, wedding rings, hot wings, and Vance's dodgers with a crawler report-edly worked extremely well. Lemolo will receive a stocking of 1,500Labor Day lunkers, plus some additional trout that will be legal-sizedand provide an excellent fishery next spring. Anglers are reminded torelease trout under eight inches and that only one trout over 20inches long can be harvested per day. There is no longer a health ad-visory posted for Lemolo.

LOON LAKE: rainbow trout, bassLoon Lake has received over 9,297 legal-sized trout to date, including1,800 fish three weeks ago. The lake was also stocked with some fin-gerlings last year that should be legal-sized now. Bass and bluegillfishing has also been good recently at Loon Lake.

LOST CREEK RESERVOIR: rainbow trout, spring chinook, bassLost Creek has produced some trout limits recently for anglers fishingin the morning by the dam and above the bridge. Trollers fishing wed-ding ring and worm combinations fished deep had success, althoughthe fish are biting sluggishly. Trollers often fish wedding ring and wormcombinations behind flashers. Powerbait and nightcrawlers can alsobe successful. The reservoir is 48 percent full and the surface temper-ature is 64F. Bass fishing should be good.

PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES: bottomfish, greenlingFishing for rockfish and lingcod has been good when the ocean hasbeen “calm.” Fishing from shore for rockfish has been good. Concen-trate your fishing near rocky outcroppings and drop-offs. Fishing forrockfish and lingcod is now restricted to inside 20 fathoms. Also, re-tention of cabezon by boat anglers is no longer allowed because theharvest cap for the year is close to being met. Fishing for greenlinghas been good especially when fishing around rocky shorelines withsome kelp growing near by. Sand shrimp is an excellent bait to use.

PLAT I RESERVOIR: rainbow trout, warmwater game fishBass can be harvested from Mar. 1 to Oct. 31. Plat I was stocked with4,500 trout in 2009. To date nearly 4,000 trout have been stocked.

ROGUE RIVER

Rogue River, lower: chinook, coho, summer steelhead, half-poundersChinook fishing is slow in the bay. Water temperatures in the RogueRiver are unusually cool for this time of year and most of the chinookanglers are fishing the lower river instead of the bay. Boat anglers arepicking up quite of few chinook anchoring and running anchovies, spinners, or eggs out the back. Coho should start making a presence, along with Indian Creek Hatchery chinook, in the Rogue Bay anytime. Each year ODFW seines the Rogue River at Huntley Park (approxi-mately 8 miles upstream of highway 101) from July 15 to Oct. 31 tomonitor salmon and steelhead migrating upstream. Anglers wanting tofish the Rogue will find this information valuable in planning when tofish. ODFW will post this information every two weeks starting July31. Click here to see the most current counts. Starting Sept. 1 throughOct. 31 angling in the Rogue River Canyon from Foster Bar upstreamto Whiskey Creek is restricted to artificial flies and lures.

Rogue River, middle: chinook salmon, steelheadSome bright chinook are passing through the middle Rogue, andsummer steelhead are available. Anglers are reporting some goodsuccess on fall chinook. The flow at Grants Pass on Sept. 8 was 2310cfs and the water temperature was 58oF. Trout and steelhead havebeen biting small spinners, Panther Martins, and copper coloredlures. Starting Sept. 1 through Oct. 31 angling in the Rogue RiverCanyon from Foster Bar upstream to Whiskey Creek is restricted toartificial flies and lures. Anglers should be aware that work on GoldRay Dam is contributing some turbidity to the river that varies depend-ing on the work being donee. A new turbidity gauge has been addedat Grants Pass.

Rogue River, upper: chinook salmon, steelhead, troutThe artificial fly season is in effect on the upper river, and anglers canenjoy good success on summer steelhead and trout. Decreasingreservoir releases over the next week should increase fishing suc-cess. Fishing for chinook, however, is now closed between the GoldRay Dam site and Cole Rivers Hatchery. On September 8, the flowout of Lost Creek Reservoir was 2107 cfs, and the flow at Gold Raywas 2400 cfs. The river temperature was 55oF at the reservoir out-flow and averaged 58oF at Gold Ray Dam. Releases are scheduledto drop to 1500 cfs by Sept. 16. Last week an additional 90 summersteelhead entered the Cole Rivers Hatchery collection pond, bringingthe total for the year to 1,096. Anglers fishing mostly nymphs havehad success recently on both summer steelhead and trout. JacksonCounty has closed access to the river from a point 1,000 feet aboveGold Ray Dam to a point 500 feet below the dam to accommodatework to remove the dam. The change should not significantly affectanglers fishing below the dam.

Rogue River, above Lost Creek Reservoir: troutThe premier summer trout fishery in the Rogue watershed is the riverabove Lost Creek Reservoir. For 2010, this section of the river will bestocked weekly with rainbow trout through the month of September toprovide some late summer fishing. Most campgrounds and high usepublic access sites are stocked, and a map of stocking sites is avail-able. Naturally produced trout are available in tributary streams, alongwith the South Fork and Middle Fork Rogue River for anglers wantingto fish more secluded areas. Brook trout dominated the tributaries ofthe upper Rogue, but rainbow, cutthroat and some brown trout arealso available. A recent trip by fly anglers produced good numbers ofrainbows and some brook trout on wet and dry flies.

SMITH RIVER: striped bass, trout, fall chinook, steelheadThe catch-and-release trout fishing closes on Sept. 16. This area isopen to striped bass year-round, two fish per 24 hours, 24-inch mini-mum size. Stripped bass fishing has been productively lately. Fishingfor fin-clipped steelhead on the mainstem Smith from Spencer Creekupstream to Sisters Creek and the North Fork from Johnson Creek tobridge 10 closed April 30. This area also closes to trout fishing Sept. 16.

TENMILE BASIN: largemouth bass, yellow perch, wild cohoFishing for largemouth bass is decent. Bass can be found in bothshallow water along the weedlines and deep water next to cover.Bass are biting on crankbaits, jigs, plastic worms, topwater and spin-nerbaits. Best fishing is in the mornings and evenings. The water tem-perature is in the upper 60s. Yellow perch are biting on worms orsmall jigs tipped with a piece of worm. Most yellow perch are smallerthan 8 inches but there is an occanssional fish over 12 inches in thelake. Try fishing in deeper water near weedlines. There will be a wildcoho season in Tenmile Lakes starting Oct. 1.

UMPQUA ESTUARY: sturgeon, striped bass, chinookOcean chinook fishing out of Winchester Bay and fall chinook fishingbelow Hwy 101 has been good and some fish are starting to arrive atDean Creek. Several large chinook were caught this past week. Bankfishing for chinook using spinners has also picked up from Half MoonBay to Salmon Harbor. Good numbers of coho are already enteringfreshwater. The first coho arrived at Winchester Dam Aug. 26. Anglersare reminded that only an adipose-clipped coho can be harvested. The South Jetty has continued to provide good rockfish angling andsurfperch opportunity. Crabbing continues to improve, and has beengood lately. Check with the Coast Guard for new deadlines in thelower Umpqua when the bar is closed (541-271-4847).

UMPQUA HIGH LAKES AND FOREBAYS: troutClearwater Forebay #2 has been stocked with over 4,500 trout so farthis year and will receive some Labor Day lunkers this week. Red TopLake above Myrtle Creek also has been stocked with a total of 1,500fish this year and will receive some extra lunkers in early September.Other high lakes including Maidu, Bull Pup, Connie, Skookum (N.Umpqua), Calamut, Fuller, Wolf, Cliff, Buckeye, Linda, and Big TwinLakes are annually stocked with fingerling brook trout. Over 11,000fish were stocked in 2009 and should be legal-sized now. Over15,000 fish were stocked in 2010 and will be catchable next season.Linda and Calamut were stocked with rainbow trout fingerlings in2009 and 2010 instead of the normal brook trout. Anglers have re-ported catching some of these rainbows at Calamut. Both Linda andCalamut received some additional rainbows during mid-July 2010,with about 60 to 70 legal sized fish going into each of these two lakes.

UMPQUA RIVER

Umpqua Basin Note: Trout season in the mainstem Umpqua andmainstem North Umpqua to Soda Springs is open through Oct. 31.The mainstem tributaries, Smith River, South Umpqua, Cow Creek, and North Umpqua tributaries below Soda Springs Reservoir closesSept. 16. Check regulations for gear and boundary restrictions.

UMPQUA RIVER, MAINSTEM: steelhead, chinook, bassFall chinook are entering the river providing a good lower river fisherythat is starting to extend upstream. Coho are also entering theUmpqua, but only fin-clipped coho can be harvested. Remember themainstem Umpqua is closed to wild steelhead harvest, but remainsopen year-round for adipose fin-clipped steelhead. Please report any-body harvesting wild steelhead to OSP. Chinook fishing is open yearround for 2 adults per day (wild or finclipped) and 5 jacks (15 to 24inches). Bass fishing is good throughout the Mainstem but is slowingdown as the temperatures drop.

UMPQUA RIVER, NORTH: steelheadMore summer steelhead will be entering the North Umpqua with over3,000 summers, and 12,000 spring chinook having crossed Winches-ter Dam through early July. Fly fishing has been slow to fair with suc-cess swinging traditional flies, muddlers and leech patterns. However, fishing below Swiftwater with spinning gear has been successfullately. Remember that only adipose fin-clipped steelhead can be har-vested on the North Umpqua. There is a North Umpqua summersteelhead hatchery program, so the number of fin-clipped steelheadavailable for harvest should increase as summer approaches. Chi-nook fishing in the North Umpqua is closed from August 1 until Jan 1,2011. The North is open to catch-and-release trout fishing from themouth upstream to Soda Springs Dam through Oct. 31.UMPQUA RIVER, SOUTH: trout, smallmouth bassThe South Umpqua is open to trout and smallmouth bass fishingthrough Sept. 15. The South and its tributaries are open from JacksonCreek downstream to the mouth. Jackson Creek and above is closedto angling. Tributaries to the South Umpqua, plus Cow Creek and itstributaries require the use of artificial flies and lures. Bait is allowed inthe mainstem South. Bass fishing in the South is slowing down as thewater temperatures drop. The South will close to all angling fromSept. 16 through Nov. 30. The area near Lawson Bar was posted witha health advisory due to high algae levels. Drinking water can be dan-gerous and skin contact should be avoided. Fish harvested shouldhave all skin, fat and organs removed before cooking and consuming. For additional information contact the Harmful Algae Bloom Surveil-lance program at 971-673-0400 or www.healthoregon.org/hab.

HUNTINGOPEN: COUGAR, BEAR, BOW ELK, BOW DEER, VALLEY andMOUNTAIN QUAIL, FOREST and BLUE GROUSE, MOURNING DOVE

EARLY SEASON GOOSE opened September 11

DOUGLAS COUNTY HUNTINGDEER bow season is open. Deer populations are similar to last year, with low levels at upper elevations and high population levels on theUmpqua Valley floor. Most low elevation lands are privately owned sohunters are reminded to obtain permission before hunting on thoselands. During the early part of the archery season, hunters should finddeer on the northerly slopes and near water and green up areas. Checklocal fire restrictions for current fire danger before going hunting.ELK bow season is open. Elk populations are similar to last year sothis hunting year will be average. This prediction is a result of ratio in-creases, good escapement from last hunting season and another mildwinter. During the early part of the archery season, hunters should findelk on the northerly slopes and in dense conifer stands. Elk numbersare highest in the Tioga with lower levels in the Dixon, S. Indigo andMelrose units. Hunters are encouraged to contact private timberlandowners regarding access restrictions before hunting. COUGAR sea-son is open. Hunters can expect an average year. Cougars are abun-dant throughout with indicators pointing to stable or increasingnumbers. Hunting cougar is a challenge because these animals arevery secretive, but harvest success is greatest adjacent to private landwith high deer populations using a predator call. BEAR season isopen. Hunters can expect an average year. The dry weather condi-tions will concentrate bears near streams where foraging will be better.Hunters should concentrate their efforts in the berry patches in earlymorning and late afternoon. Bear numbers are good with the highestnumbers in the coast range, and with smaller populations in the Cas-cades. Successful bear hunters are reminded there is a mandatorycheck-in for all harvested bear within 10 days of harvest (see regula-tions for details). WESTERN GREY SQUIRREL is open. Hunters canexpect an average year. Squirrels are widely distributed throughoutthe county with good numbers in areas of oaks and conifers. Manyareas of high squirrel populations are on private lands so hunters arereminded to ask for permission on these lands before hunting.

UPLAND GAMEBIRDS GROUSE and QUAIL seasons are open. Hunters can expect a lowerthan average hunt year. The overall 2010 brood/chick counts indicatelower than average production but hunters should find good numbersof game birds out in the field. Hunting availability and success for for-est grouse should be good this year even though production wasdown. Blue grouse success is best in mid to high elevations of theCascades in partly open conifer stands. Ruffed grouse can be foundnear creeks mostly at mid elevations of both the Cascades and CoastRange. Hunters that kill grouse are asked to drop off in a paper bagthe frozen wing and tail of each grouse at the local ODFW office. Please use one bird per bag with each frozen bag of grouse parts in-cluding the species, sex, age, unit and general area of harvest forproper analysis. Nesting season production was poor for Californiaquail and below average for Mountain quail, so hunting opportunityshould be fair to good. Success is best in the lower elevation agricul-tural lands for California quail and mid-elevations of the Cascadesand Coast Range near brushy clear cuts on secondary forest roadsfor Mountain quail. Hunters are also asked if they kill a mountainquail to drop off in a paper bag the frozen wing and tail of each moun-tain quail at the local ODFW office. Please use one bird per bag witheach frozen bag of mountain quail parts including the species, sex, age, unit and general area of harvest for proper analysis.

MIGRATORY GAMEBIRDSMOURNING DOVE season is open. Hunters can expect an above av-erage year. Some mourning doves have migrated south since the re-cent rains. But their numbers are still high. In addition, keep in mindthe non-migratory Eurasian collared doves numbers are on the in-crease throughout the state and our county, and they are part of themourning dove bag limit. Check the 2010 game bird regulations fordetails. Also, don’t forget to ask for permission from local landownersbefore hunting doves on private land. BAND-TAILED PIGEON seasonopens September 15 – 23. Hunters can expect an average year.Hunters should concentrate their efforts on forested ridgelines with re-generated clear-cuts having adequate elderberry producing areas.WATERFOWL: Early goose season east of Hwy. 101 in DouglasCounty is open from Sep. 11 – Sep. 15. Goose hunters can expectan average to above-average year. Hunting for resident geese inDouglas County should be very good because of an excellent produc-tion again this year. Nearly all goose hunting in the Umpqua Valley ison private property and hunters should obtain landowner permissionbefore hunting.

WEEKEND FISHING OPPORTUNITIES:• Fall chinook fishing has been very good on the Umpqua, Coos, Coquille and middle Rogue rivers.

• With the onset of cooler temperatures trout fishing should pick up on many area lakes.
