Art in the Detail: 20th Century Masters of Photography
August 14 - October 12
This exhibition included 30 photographs that explore texture, light, and the interplay of these
qualities in the work of established and emerging masters of photography. Working primarily in
black and white film, each of the artists in this exhibition possessed the technical skills required
to work in photography. In addition, they have an aesthetic “eye” to investigate and explore
the environment around them in order to discover new and unique perspectives on the world

Sunday Family Zone + Studio: Family Zone
Sundays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Every Sunday, it’s ArtTime—FamilyTime at the MFAH. Look for signs in the main lobbies to tell you
which gallery the Family Zone is located in that day. In the Family Zone, spend some time with our
friendly family educators—sit on a pillow and read, sketch a work of art, and get involved in an
investigation of a work of art. In the studio, create an art project inspired by original works of art on
display in the Family Zone. This suite of programs includes:
• Sunday Storytime Make connections between a storybook and a work of art in the galleries. (Begins
at 1:30 p.m.)
• Creation Station At this family-friendly workshop, an MFAH teaching artist encourages families to
create art using materials or ideas similar to those used by the artist who created the featured work of
art on display in the Family Zone.
• Gallery Investigations Visit the Gallery Cart, where an MFAH educator has looking games, books,
and hands-on activities for families.
First Sundays: Art Improv
Art Improv offers family fun on select first Sundays, 1 to 4 p.m., throughout the year. Choose a work of
art anywhere in the Museum and make friends with it! Spend time sketching it, writing about it, and
talking about it together.
Then, visit the studio, where you'll find an assortment of materials to create a work of art inspired by
the new “friend” and your own imagination. On these special Sundays, families can also choose a
work of art to draw at Sketching in the Galleries. And, the Kinder Foundation Education Center is a
great place to stop during any museum visit to read a book together, check out a Family Pack, and
more.

CAMH EXHBITIONS
RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW: HOUSTON
On View: August 23 – November 30, 2014
With Right Here, Right Now: Houston, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston showcases artists living
in the city and celebrates our region’s vibrant creative community. Houston has been a lively
breeding ground for artistic innovation for decades now and is increasingly considered a global art
center alongside New York, Los Angeles, London, and more recently, Berlin. The Houston of today is a
globally networked city where a manageable cost of living and affordable studio space allows
innovators to maintain practices at a highly professional level without having to sacrifice international
recognition or an excellent quality of life. Right Here, Right Now: Houston is a dynamic portrait of the
artistic developments taking shape in studios across this city and features solo presentations of work
by Houston-based artists Debra Barrera, Nathaniel Donnett, and Carrie Marie Schneider. It marks the
beginning of an occasional and ongoing series through which the museum will investigate localized
artistic practices.
MORE REAL THAN REALITY ITSELF
On View: June 27 – September 21, 2014
More Real Than Reality Itself brings together single-, multi-channel, and installation-based video works
by four artists who breathe new life into the medium’s familiar documentary parameters. Andrea
Geyer, Camille Henrot, Laure Prouvost, and A. L. Steiner use video as a vehicle to communicate their
unique understandings of the world. Their works expose video’s capacity for poetry, its materiality,
and its ability to suggest alternative futures by reframing how we see the present. Through affecting
emotional responses, their works offer us new ways to understand and inhabit the world we share.
ART ON THE LAWN: JOSEPH HAVEL
On View: July 19, 2013 – April 30, 2015
The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston is pleased to present a new site-specific work by Houston-
based sculptor Joseph Havel. For the third installation in CAMH’s Art on the Lawn series, Havel has
created an “endless column” of books. Endless (2013), made from books cast in bronze and resin,
emerges from the centerpiece of the Museum’s lawn, the Ballard Fountain. The column of books,
cast from a stack of Sotheby's auction catalogues among others, stands almost 20 feet high and
gradually transitions from bronze to translucent resin. Join CAMH on Friday, July 19, for the official
debut of Endless during the opening reception for Graphic Design—Now in Production, 7-9PM.

PERFORMANCE AND CONVERSATION: NATHANIEL DONNETT
Thursday, September 25 | 6:30PM
Artist Nathaniel Donnett will lead a collaborative sound and motion-based performance, further
exploring the issues of trauma and mourning portrayed in his exhibition Nothing to See Hear.
Performance collaborators include: Maurice Duhon, EQuality, Angela Olivia Guillory, Chinelo
Ikejimba, The Niyat, and DJ Flash Gordon Parks among others.
Following the performance, Donnett will join Houston-based arts writer and critic Garry Reece for a
conversation about the exhibition and the recurring themes and issues found throughout Donnett’s
art-making practice.
THE MENIL COLLECTION EXHIBITION
Dario Robleto: The Boundary of Life is Quietly Crossed
Artist Dario Robleto (b. 1972) has long explored emotional themes of the human condition, including
love, loss, and grief. His sculptural work, which is labor-intensive and many times involves the
transformation of materials, distills these complex and universal states into meditations on fragility and
change. This site-specific project at the Menil will revolve around his most recent area of inquiry: the
largely unexplored history of the human heartbeat. The installation and series of public talks, will link
together the earliest historical attempts to record and visualize the human pulse and heartbeat, the
female brain wave and heartbeat recordings onboard a NASA probe at the edge of the Solar
System, and recent developments in artificial heart research that suggest a “beatless” heart may
hold the answers for this life-saving technology to progress.

Texas during 2012 and 235 in 2013, making Texas the state with the majority of border deaths for both
years. Four Houston-area experts will discuss U.S. border policies and the actions being taken by the
South Texas Human Rights Center and the Houston Prevention of Migrant Deaths Working Group to
save lives and challenge these policies.
