In fact, the oppositionhas recorded just one first down (by Miami (FL) in 2004) inthe six overtime periods.

The play finished quite a day forDantzler, who ran for 164 yards and two scores, and threwfor 254 yards and two touchdowns. Ninth-ranked GeorgiaTech had scored a field goal on its overtime possession. Itwas Clemson’s highest-ranked road win in 20 seasons.

Clemson Ring of Honor

The Clemson Ring of Honor is the highesthonor a Clemson athlete, coach, or administratorcan receive. A recipient must first be a member ofthe Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame, earn at least anundergraduate degree from a four-year institution,and make a significant contribution to the heritageof Clemson athletics. Honorees have their jerseyretired, but not the number. Each Clemson athleticfacility has a display for its Ring of Honor members.The facade on the north upper deck of MemorialStadium is the site of the Ring of Honor for football.

An 11-member committee reviews candidatesevery two years. The Ring of Honor was establishedin 1994 when Banks McFadden, Steve Fuller, andFrank Howard were inducted as charter members.

Ring of Honor Members

Rusty Adkins is the onlythree-time All-American inTiger baseball history(1965,66,67). A three-timeFirst-Team All-ACC player,Adkins hit .444 in 1965, anaverage that remained aTiger record for 37 years.Adkins had a 41-game hit-ting streak that remains in

the top 10 in NCAA history. He was also named tothe ACC’s 50-Year Anniversary team in 2002.

Jerry Butler was a first-team AP All-American in1978 in leading the Tigersto a #6 ranking and 11-1record. He caught at leastone pass in a record 36straight games. In 1979,he was the #5 pick of Buf-falo, where he played foreight years. In 2002, he

was named to the ACC’s 50-Year Anniversary team.He was inducted into the Ring of Honor in 1999.

Fred Cone was the firstTiger in history to rush for2,000 career yards (1948-50). He ranks fourth on theTiger career list for touch-downs (31). Cone was astarter on two undefeatedteams, one of two playersin Tiger history to do that.He went on to a lengthy pro

career and is a member of the Packers Hall of Fame.He was inducted into the Ring of Honor in 1997.

Dale Davis was a three-time All-ACC player for theTigers from 1987-91. Hewas a first-team selectionin 1990 when he joinedElden Campbell in leadingClemson to its first ACCregular-season title. Hestill ranks among theACC’s top 10 in career field

goal percentage. He was named an honorablemention All-American that year. A first-round draftchoice of the Indiana Pacers, Davis is still active inthe NBA with the Indiana Pacers.

Jeff Davis, captain ofClemson’s 1981 NationalChampionship team, wasa first-team All-Americanthat year when he led theTigers in tackles (175), thesecond-highest total in Ti-ger history. Davis was alsonamed the MVP of theACC and was the Defen-

sive MVP of the Orange Bowl win over Nebraska,the game that clinched the national title for the Ti-gers, the first in Clemson history. He was named afirst-team All-American and went on to an NFL ca-reer with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2002, hewas named to the ACC’s 50-Year Anniversary team.He was inducted into the Ring of Honor in 1995.

Steve Fuller is one ofthree football players inClemson history to be cho-sen an All-American on thefield and in the classroom.He was a first-team Aca-demic All-American in1977 and 1978, and was athird-team AP All-Ameri-can in 1978. Fuller, who

was ACC MVP twice, was an NCAA Top-Five Awardwinner in 1979, the only Tiger athlete to win theaward. He was the recipient of a National FootballFoundation Scholar-Athlete Award. In 2002, he wasnamed to the ACC’s 50-Year Anniversary team. Hewas a charter member of the Ring of Honor in 1994.

Frank Howard wasClemson’s head footballcoach and athletic directorfrom 1940-69. He led theTigers to eight conferencetitles, six bowl games, andsix top-25 years. He wasinducted into the CollegeFootball Hall of Fame in1989 and is the second-

winningest coach in ACC history. He had 165 wins,most in the ACC at the time of his retirement. Hewas a charter member of the Ring of Honor in 1994.

Barbara Kennedy is thegreatest female athlete inClemson athletic history.She was an All-Americanand led the nation in scor-ing. She is still the ACC’sall-time leader in both scor-ing and rebounding.Kennedy scored over3,000 points in her four

seasons. In 2002, she was named to the ACC’s 50-Year Anniversary tam and was named one of thetop-50 greatest female athletes in ACC history.

Terry Kinard was a two-time first-team AP All-American (1981-82). Hewas a unanimous All-American in 1982, the onlyunanimous All-American inTiger history. The long-time member of the Giantsstill holds the Tiger recordfor career interceptions. In

1990, he was named to USA Today’s All-Decadeteam for the 1980s. In 2000, he was named toSports Illustrated’s All-Century team of college foot-ball. In 2001, he became the first Tiger in 42 yearsto be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.In 2002, he was named to the ACC’s 50-Year Anni-versary team and was ranked among the top-50male athletes in ACC sports history. He was inductedinto the Ring of Honor in 2001.

Tina Krebs became thefirst track athlete and thesecond female to be in-ducted into the Ring ofHonor in 2003. Earlier thatyear, she was named tothe ACC 50-Year Anniver-sary teams in cross coun-try, indoor track, and out-door track, and was recog-

nized as one of the top 50 athletes in all women’ssports for the first 50 years of the ACC. She was athree-time NCAA champion, the most individual na-tional titles for any Tiger track athlete. She was in-ducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 1993.

Banks McFadden wasnamed the nation’s MostVersatile Athlete in 1939.He was an All-American inboth football and basket-ball, the only Tiger in his-tory to accomplish thatfeat. McFadden led the Ti-gers to their first bowl bidever, a 6-3 win over Bos-

ton College in the 1940 Cotton Bowl. McFaddenwas the #4 overall pick of the 1940 NFL draft, thehighest draft pick in Tiger football history. He wasinducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in1959 and was a charter member of the ClemsonRing of Honor in 1994. He passed away in June,2005.

• With five of its 11 teams listed in thefinal top 25 and nine in the top 50,the ACC was the highest-rated con-ference in college football accord-ing to the Sagarin computer ratingsin 2004. It marked the second con-secutive year that the ACC was thehighest-rated conference accordingto Sagarin.

• In each of the last four years, theACC has had at least six teams takepart in a bowl game.

• The ACC had a 27-13 record in non-conference play in 2004. Over thelast three years, the ACC is 37-29(.561) against the other BCS con-ferences, including a 12-9 markagainst the SEC. Eighth differentACC teams had victories over otherBCS conference schools in 2004,including Clemson, who defeatedSouth Carolina of the SEC.

• In 2002, the ACC set an NCAArecord when seven of its nineschools earned bowl bids.

• Nine ACC players (includingClemson’s Leroy Hill) earned first-

team All-America honors in 2004,and six more were second-teamselections.

• The 11 ACC schools combined tohave a conference-record 36 play-ers drafted in April of 2005, and nineof the 11 schools had at least oneplayer drafted.

• The ACC has had at least one first-round draft choice in 17 straightyears and 26 of the last 28 years.

• The ACC has long been consideredone of the top defensive leagues inthe nation, but that reputationreached an all-time high in 2004when eight of the 11 teams rankedin the top 28 in the nation in totaldefense, including three teams whofinished in the top 10.

• Popularity of ACC football is at anall-time high. In 2004, the ACC sur-passed 3.5 million in total atten-dance, and for the fifth-straight year,the league set a new single-seasonrecord for attendance. The 66 homegames during 2004 drew 3,693,032fans, breaking the previous mark of3,006,841 set in 2003.

Clemson has been to a bowl game 16 of the last 20 years, including the 2004 Peach Bowl win over #6Tennessee. The Tigers have also contributed to the ACC’s best bowl winning percentage in the nation.

Overview: Looks to move into the starting lineup at the bandit end posi-tion, an important position in new Defensive Coordinator Vic Koenning’salignment...one of the more agile defensive linemen in the ACC...had a strongspring when he had five sacks in three scrimmages, including three sacks in thefirst scrimmage on April 2...started one game in 2004, the Texas A&M game,and played in all 11 contests...has missed just one game in his two years andhas averaged 22.5 plays per game over the last two years...one of the top all-around athletes on the team, and his strength training stats show that...sixth onthe team in the broad jump at 9’11”, but also fourth on the team in the powerclean (340) and sixth in the hang clean (375)...also has a 38” vertical jump...has50 tackles in two years, 12 of which have been tackles for loss, so he makes bigplays...also has six pass deflections at the line of scrimmage thanks to his 6’5”frame...his playing time and stats doubled over his freshman year; he wentfrom 15 tackles to 35 last year...has never had an interception; he might havethe opportunity at his new position, which will include pass-coverage responsi-bilities.
