departments, as well as the large number of daily customers, employee training and evaluation became an increasingly important aspect of the everyday workflow at Cabela’s. Finding a solution that would help develop and edit custom training content for employees became a top priority for the company. After comparing many systems, Cabela’s realized that it needed an integrated solution which could offer content development tools and assistance, and a platform to enroll and participate in Cabela’s-specific degree programs from Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC). Cabela’s also wanted a solution for measurement and reporting so each store could track employee training and certification among the product categories. “We now have 64 different learning plans that multiple departments use to train employees,” says Heather Williamson, human resource training system administrator. “Every retail employee has a minimum of three learning plans they must complete. The SumTotal solution saves us a lot of time and is easy to use from the learner’s standpoint.”

MANDATORY TRAINING MADE EASYAccording to Williamson, each employee has one course they must complete every year — Cabela’s Code of Conduct. This course is available through SumTotal’s solution, eliminating the time and cost of bringing employees together for instructor-led training (ILT) courses in a central location each year.

It’s also nice to see that, when we send in a request for a certain enhancement, someone is actually paying attention.”In the future, Williamson hopes to expand the use of SumTotal’s solution in the corporate offices. Today, the retail section of the business is getting the most out of the system. Williamson says they will continue to add product training to their roster of custom courses while also adding the Retail Line Review—a constantly-changing look at new products coming to stores.
