The Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway line, constructed by lumberman J.R. Booth through the southern part of Algonquin Park, began operation in 1897. Algonquin Park Station was built in 1906 on the flat area in front of you. The rail line was a busy freight and passenger route in the early years, and the main way to come to Algonquin Park until Highway 60 was completed in 1936. Through travel on the railway stopped after a trestle between Cache Lake and Lake of Two Rivers was condemned in 1933. Local use declined over the next 20 years, and the last train left Cache Lake in 1959.

La ligne de chemin de fer Ottawa, Arnprior et Parry Sound, qui fut construite par le baron de la coupe du bois J.R. Booth et qui traversait le secteur sud du parc Algonquin, entra en service en 1897. La gare du parc Algonquin fut construite en 1906 sur le terrain plat qui se trouve devant vous. La ligne de chemin de fer fut, au tout début, une importante route de transport de marchandises et de passagers, et le principal moyen de se rendre au parc Algonquin, jusqu’à ce que la construction de la route 60 soit terminée, en 1936. Le transport ferroviaire à travers le parc fut cependant interrompu après qu’un pont à chevalets entre le lac Cache et le lac Two Rivers fut condamné, en 1933. L’usage local de la ligne de chemin de fer diminua au cours des 20 années qui suivirent. Aucun train n’a quitté la gare du lac Cache depuis 1959.

The hill before you was the site of Highland Inn. The railway opened the first section of this hotel in 1908, and it could accommodate 150 people when completed in 1910. Highland Inn featured fishing, boating, swimming, tennis, billiards, dancing to a live band, music and reading rooms, a store, and a post office. Use of all Algonquin’s hotels declined dramatically during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and as camping became popular after the Second World War. Highland Inn was dismantled in 1957.

L’hôtel Highland Inn se tenait jadis sur la colline qui se trouve devant vous. La compagnie de chemin de fer ouvrit cet hôtel en 1908. Le Highland Inn pouvait héberger jusqu’à 150 vacanciers lorsque sa construction fut achevée en 1910. Elle offrait à sa clientèle la possibilité de faire de la pêche, de la navigation de plaisance et de la natation. Elle proposait également des terrains de tennis, des jeux de billard, une piste de danse avec orchestre, des salles de musique et de lecture, un magasin et un bureau de poste. Le taux de fréquentation de tous les hôtels du parc Algonquin diminua énormément pendant la Grande Crise des années 1930 et le camping gagna en popularité après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le Highland Inn fut démolie en 1957.

Park Headquarters was moved from Canoe Lake to Cache Lake in 1897, and a Park Superintendent’s residence and a staff quarters were built on the point of land in front of you. Several other Park buildings were constructed over the years at Cache Lake, including a hangar for the Superintendent’s plane, and a Recreation Hall. Most were torn down, or moved by truck in 1959 to the present headquarters at the East Gate.

Le quartier général du parc fut déménagé du lac Canoe au lac Cache en 1897. La résidence du surintendant du parc et la résidence des employés furent construites sur la pointe de terre qui se trouve devant vous. Le lac Cache a vu la construction de bon nombre d’autres bâtiments au fil des ans, dont un hangar pour l’avion du surintendant et une salle de loisirs. La plupart de ces bâtiments furent démolis ou transportés par camion en 1959 au quartier général actuel, à l’Entrée est du parc.

Little evidence remains of Cache Lake’s early days. The removal of Highland Inn, the railway, and most of the Park Headquarters buildings in the 1950s was part of a government policy to return Algonquin Park to “a more natural state.” However, Cache Lake is still a very busy place, serving as an access point for canoe trippers, more than 60 leasehold cottages, two youth camps for girls (Camp Northway and Camp Tanamakoon), and Bartlett Lodge.

Il ne reste pas grand-chose des débuts du lac Cache. La démolition de l’hôtel Highland Inn, de la voie ferrée et de la majeure partie des bâtiments du quartier général du parc dans les années 1950 s’inscrivait dans une politique gouvernementale visant à ramener le parc Algonquin « à un état plus naturel ». Le lac Cache reste toutefois un endroit assez achalandé puisqu’il sert de point d’accès pour les canoteurs, plus de 60 chalets loués à bail, deux camps pour jeunes filles (Camp Northway et Camp Tanamakoon) et l’auberge Bartlett Lodge.
