Faster with 64-bit and CADISON® R10A change from a 32-bit to a 64-bit architecture is a funda-mental alteration, as most operating systems, but also the ap-plications must be extensively modified to take advantage ofthe new architecture.

With a 64 bit CPU, OS and our new upcoming CADISON® R10you can take full advantage of the extra RAM and addressmuch more than 4 GB of memory!

Most 64-bit microprocessors on the market today have an ar-tificial limit on the amount of memory they can address, con-siderably lower than what might be expected from 64 bits.

For example, the AMD64 architecture currently has a 52 bit“limit” on physical memory and only supports a 48-bit virtualaddress space. This is 4 PB (4 x 10245 bytes) and 256 TB(256 x 10244 bytes), respectively.

Configuration of serverA specifically constructed hardware should be used asserver; the use of a desktop pc with a server operating sys-tem is no appropriate solution!

The recommended memory has to comply with the number ofsimultaneously operating databases; usually 4 GB ought tobe enough for about 20 simultaneously operating databases(more memory is only supported by 64-bit Windows versionsor 32-bit Server Enterprise versions.CADISON® will be released as 64-bit system with Release 10at the end of 2010!Until then only 32-bit versions of Windows 2003 Server or Win-dows 2008 come into consideration (up to 4 GB RAM there isno difference if the Standard or Enterprise version is in-stalled).The amount and the rate of the processors play no majorRole; more effective – based on the database accesses – is

to invest in faster hard drive!Also gigabit network connectivity to the clients is importantfor an ideal performance. Attention: The active componentsbetween the client and server within the network have to sup-port the rate as well.

Configuration of clientsFor clients the processor and graphics card performance arevery important. Advisable is a configuration with 4 GB RAM,while using a 64-bit operating system (CADISON® R10) morememory can be addressed.For choosing a graphics card which is certified for your envi-ronment (AutoCAD and Windows version) we recommendusing the Autodesk website (www.autodesk.com, see graph-ics card).

AutoCADAn obstructive limitation during the processing of large draw-ings is currently the restriction of memory for a single process(acad.exe) to 2 GB. This problem can be decreased by ad-justing the AutoCAD-resolution settings.The problem will be solved when using a 64-bit system, sincethis restriction won't apply anymore.

VirtualizationBasically nothing speaks against virtualization as long as it'sascertained that the virtual server has enough resourcesavailable!

For a productive operation a suitable product e.g. VMWareESX-Server or Microsoft HyperV should be used.

If there are no compelling reasons for the virtualization, werecommend using a physical server.

Microsoft Office Visio® is a wide-spread and cost saving platform. Whenused as the application to PID-De-signer for Visio® it will further contributeto the enhancement of your competi-tiveness. For fast creation of P&ID thetool allows you to position previouslydefined components using the work-station’s symbol library (in accordancewith EN ISO 10628, ANSI etc.)

While main elements are beingpositioned, motors and drives aredisplayed graphically as standaloneobjects which are automatically linkedwith their associated parent object.Fittings are assigned to equipment assubordinate objects and automaticallytake on the nominal diameter of thepiping system to which they havebeen connected.

Once positioned, armatures and equipments are auto-matically assigned a unique tag number from a numberingsystem, which can be readily adapted to your companystandard. Displayed text is oriented in the standard mannerand managed at levels according to their own labels. Fittingsinserted into piping systems automatically inherit the relevantpipe specification parameters. Tags can be generated at anytime. Predefined shapes are provided for machine bars,object labelling and they are directly connected to the object,which will be dynamically updated.

Cross-referenced objects are available for multi-page pro-cessing and are systematically updated to reflect changes indrawing data such as drawing numbers and so on. Users candefine exactly, which data has to be displayed in the con-nectors. Pipings and their mounting parts have a specific flowdirection, on which the valves, pumps, etc. are automaticallyoriented. PID-Designer for Visio® gives you a free choice towork with or without a pipe class support. Plant limits(marked as a “logic plant” in CADISON®) can directly bedefined in the drawings. The plant conformity and respectivelabelling system will stay unchanged.

New shapes (symbols) can be created via common Visio-functionalities. Our Symbol-Editor allows you to implementquickly and easily any needed classification (pumps, valvesetc) with an automatic take over of connecting points. Thismethodology enables the integration of new shapes to ourVisio shape library, which are then available to all users.

databases. “It was a challenge to dothe latest upgrade, but together with

ITandFactory we´ve made it!” Mr. Gert Gasperin, oneof the Project Engineers, said.

CADISON® USERCADISON® beats other CAE solution againFor many years world market leader Lenzing AG (Au-stria) has been a successful and satisfied user of theintegrated CAE solution CADISON® of ITandFactoryGmbH (ITF) based in Bad Soden, Germany. Now, itsIndonesian subsidiary also decided pro CADISON®

after a trial project with a competitor did not render thedesired results. In early 2010, SPV (PT. South PacificViscose) took into operation its fourth production linefor viscose in Purwakarta. Only shortly after, the plan-ning process for the next production line in Asia wasstarted with CADISON®.

Project manager Rudolf Kern (SPV) wants the wholeplanning team for the Asian region to build on the in-tegrated solution right from the start. Günter Krohn,new Director Global Fiber Production (Lenzing) al-ready defined the specifications for the choice of thefuture engineering solution in his previous position asPresident Director (SPV). “The solution has to integrateall engineering processes and show the current plan-ning status at any time. On the other hand, it needs tobe easy to learn and used intuitively, because the up-coming projects will be handled by multicultural teamswho need to cooperate across borders.” Apart fromCADISON® SPV relies on the engineering support ofITF’s parent company Neilsoft Ltd. Although the gross profit in the spe-ciality chemicals industry has droppedby an average of 3.4 percent in the lastten years (1), this sector is still in goodshape compared to base chemicals. Asa consequence of massive overcapaci-ties and much tougher competition fromAsia, the suppliers of chemical com-modities have seen their profits slashedby a third. As in the discrete manufac-turing industry, companies in theprocess industry are well advised to be-come more focussed.

United Initiators GmbH & Co. KG (2),a supplier of speciality chemicals, hasbeen a key employer in the south of Mu-nich for many decades. Up to July 312008 it was part of Evonik Industriesand now is owned by the US financial in-vestor Speyside Equity. In Pullach thecompany produces and markets or-ganic peroxides and persulphatesmainly used in the production and pro-cessing of polymers. Besides its mainsite in Pullach, at which around 300 peo-ple are employed, it has bases in theUSA, Australia and China.

Germany’s Isar Valley has been abase for the chemicals industry since1911. With the production of hydrogenperoxides (H2O2), the scientists GustavAdolph and Albert Pietzsch laid thefoundations for the set-up of industrialplants on what is now United Initiators’company site. Like persulphates, per-oxides are initiators that trigger chem-ical reactions.

“Safety forms the basis for our busi-ness,” is the maxim at United Initiators.This maxim is firmly anchored in the

awareness of every employee andshapes their behaviour and the way theywork.

All technical activities, irrespectiveof whether these involve a new installa-tion or a conversion, the introduction ofor changes to production processesand workflows, are preceded by ex-haustive hazard analyses conducted byhighly qualified experts.

Owing to the properties of the prod-ucts made and the raw materials used,the company equipment and its em-ployees must meet very high require-ments. Accordingly, the systems formonitoring and guaranteeing safety aswell as for the continuous improvementof all processes are highly developed.

In a talk with our editors, Karl-HeinzBöttcher, Technical Manager at the com-pany’s Pullach site, spoke about thesuccessful application of organizationaland technical instruments and methodsat the facility.

The tasks and responsibilities of theTechnical Department comprise designand planning, new installations and con-versions as well as maintenance, includ-ing performing all monitoring duties forall technical equipment on site. As a keyinstrument for reliable and efficient pro-cessing, the planning tool CADISON® isused. CADISON® is a product suppliedby ITandFactory GmbH based in BadSoden (Germany) and uses Autocad asits geometry engine.

Another important criterion for thischoice was migratability of data, which

were in the past capturedby a system provided byEvonik. Obviously, the teamfrom ITandFactory man-aged this with flyingcolours, after all otherwise

this talk would never have taken place inthis form. “The migration of the legacydata was a real challenge,” stresses

Rainer Schmidt, who is responsible forthe technical revision/regular tests nowcontrolled with CADISON®. In a periodof around five months, everything wasfinished. Strictly speaking, only fourweeks were effectively needed to con-vert the documents of the 5 000 test cy-cles already completed. A certain hastewas necessary as the next tests were al-ready pending. “Migration alwaysmeans a certain time in which the old

system no longer functions, but thenew one is not yet available,” Schmidtpointed out.

While prior to the introduction in June2009, certain maintenance functionswere already supported in the MRMmodule (Maintenance & Revision Man-agement) from CADISON®, these werenot sufficient for the intended purpose.Special modifications were necessary.For the application at United Initiators, itis particularly important for a large num-ber of different testing intervals to bemeticulously maintained. The differenttypes of test, e.g. TÜV (Technical Con-trol Board) or mass tests, in connectionwith certain technical requirements forthe objects, apparatus or machines tobe tested must be supported byCADISON®. Böttcher states, “United Ini-tiator’s requirements aren’t particularlyexotic.” Many owner/operators have tocomply with similar test obligations, saysthe expert.

The documentation within theCADISON® MRM is now designed suchthat both the test specification and thetest log as documentation is linked to thetested object. If any faults are detectedduring testing, subsequent remediationof these faults is also recorded in the ITsystem.

You might ask why United Initiatorsdoesn’t use the installed SAP system tocoordinate its service and maintenancework. This would be feasible, after all the

Walldorf-based com-pany does include adedicated module inits range of softwaresolutions. The reasonis the rather complex document man-agement in SAP version 3.1i. Till datethe maintenance cost accounting is stilldone with the SAP system.

There is no question of replacing itwith the other system at the presenttime, instead a synergistic coexistenceis planned. So as part of the data mi-gration to CADISON®, the so called“Technische Plätze“ of SAP was copied.As a unique reference an equipmentnumber generated by SAP is used andallocated to each object, like a serialnumber (e.g. for drives or pumps). “In

addition, the user navigation andprompting in CADISON® is what we ex-pect from a modern IT tool,” explainsSchmidt.

ITandFactory regards the decisiontaken in Pullach as one with strategicconsequence. The add-ons in the MRMmodule are to be further refined andmade accessible to a wider clientele inthe operator environment, says AccountManager Jens Weingärtner from ITand-Factory.

Certainly, United Initiators is awareof the additional potential offered byCADISON®, says Böttcher: “CADISON®

is currently not yet used as a planningengineering tool, but exclusively as aservice and maintenance tool. But weput emphasis on the entire lifecycle ofour equipment. Everything that has to bedocumented and managed during the

operating phase is to be stored centrallyin one single source database.” Ideally,in this database for each object, e.g. thequotation, the order, the technical draw-ings, the test and maintenance proto-cols and the disposal certificate, alldocuments are to be linked. And it is ex-actly this that CADISON® is capable ofdoing. So there are no further obstaclesto widening the domain of application atUnited Initiators.

In order to meet today’s market requirements the work has to be done in an easy and simple way. Especially pipelineconstructions require technical help to be completed within the given time period. Therefor, we would like to introduceto you the CADISON® Autorouter Function in more details:

Pipeline construction with

Initial situation� with the command{ Construct a pipeline

you’ll draw the pipe from the pump’s suction sidefirst in the negative Y direction and after that upto the centre of the existing pipe

� now type{ R (for Router)in the AutoCAD com-mand line to activate routing in the direction tothe vessel and confirm with{ Enter.

� next select the red connection point of the nozzle· CADISON® suggests a possible pipe routing· if the result doesn’t match your expectation,you can get a new alternative by pressing{ Space Bar

If you want to accept the offered pipe routing,confirm by using the{ left mouse button toactivate the automatic “pipe overlay” function andto finish pipe drawing.

Offered pipe routing by CADISON® Autorouter

Most of you already know this function from simple pipe con-structions. However, the Autorouter can significantly help youto solve some more complex design requirements.

The construction of device connections can be difficult dueto technical complexity, e.g. when different sloped nozzleshave to be done from different angles. CADISON® AutorouterFunction makes this work easier!

The example given below shows how the vessel nozzle isconnected with the suction side of the pump.

In this article we will show you, how project managers canspeed up a new project in CADISON® with pre-defined projecttemplates.

DefinitionA project template is a CADISON® database in which the proj-ect manager has defined “all company standards” and all theimportant steps for projects. Based on your company projecttemplate, project managers can start a project in CADISON®

in a very easy way – in just "some seconds".

Main-AdvantagesProject templates in CADISON® have the following advantages:· Ready document structures- all projects look the same- every user works in the same document structure- finding information in other projects is therefore very simple

· plant structures with the right tagging numbers- basic premade structures- tagging numbers will also be automatically created indrawings- needed media with pipe spec structure- media basics are ready to use- very few parameters to change

· company project settings as pre-settings and pre-definitions· structure views as pre-definitions· different settings for different project types· ready to use reports are pre-defined

CADISON® P&ID-Designer: This tool allows project planningprocesses and diagrams to be merged seamlessly in such a waythat all project related data is dynamically available to users. Thisin turn allows all project preliminary planning to be integrated

with basic and detail engineering, and then merged withtwo dimensional layout planning.New: now also available as PID-Designer for Visio®!

CADISON® Project-Engineer: This tool allows multiple users towork on the same project concurrently. This means that you candesign and perform all the calculations for a project using a kindof data object building method without the need of CAD. You canthen do the detail work in stages during the next steps. We call this

conceptual engineering.

CADISON® MATPIPE: CADISON® MATPIPE is a platform for thecreation and integration of vendor catalogues, pipe categoryelaboration and updating, the definition of configured 3D variants,data exporting and importing, and for verifying that existing cata-

logue data has been updated.

CADISON® Electric-Designer: This planning tool allows for thecreation and management of documentation related to Controls,Installations and ET I&C technology, as well as for direct accessto media and connection parameters from R&I diagrams neededfor the production of layout plans and hookups.

CADISON® 3D-Designer: A complete suite of 3D modeling toolsis fully integrated into the AutoCAD 3D platform, one of whosemost outstanding features is that it allows for plant specific ex-pansions. The solution also provides numerous extremely helpfuland time saving wizards. The P&ID-Designer automatically gener-

ates isometric drawings from 3D models. In addition, fully visualizedrepresentations allow for outstanding orientation in 3D models.

CADISON® is a modular CAE solution that can be easily configuredfor specific scenarios. the plant has defined tasks and transfer points and is alwaysavailable in the same functionality.

Exactly at this point CADISON® is called into action with itsobject-oriented object data database. All workstations are notonly connected during the development process but also dur-ing the operation of the plant and so a workflow is formed be-tween the separate work steps. A workflow, which gives allparticipants transparency in the process, and makes sure tobeware of misplanning!

How can engineering, assembly and start-up be speededup?

Preassembled skids, enhanced project organisation and-planning, reusable modules, an optimal start-up planning, anoptimized procurement strategy for critical equipments andan overdesign to secure design-definitions based on prelimi-nary data are the major criteria to hasten the process.

How can exposition, procurement and manufacturing beexpedited?

First of all is to name the easy and integrated workflow,then to reduce the norm variety and last but not least strategicpartnerships can expedite the processes.

Reusability and repeatabilityUnder the notion of “learning organization”, all made ex-

periences (positive and negative) should be gathered to utilizethem in the next process. CADISON® is supporting you inevery of these steps.

That only IT-based methods can support such compli-cated workflows, does not have to be mentioned at this point!

Of course it's clear, that the approach of shortening flow-times is not at the expense of plant-security and environmen-tal protection! Based on early planning with still generic flowcharts (P&ID) and with the assistance of the MiniPlant-ap-proach, cost and time can be roughly calculated.

Refining this data with more detailed planning as P&ID,with defining the details of the process and components,which becomes the master for all following planning. This mas-ter is the base for detailed account costing and orders. Or-ders for time-critical processes could be started at the sametime as 3D-planning.

10 years development time is “normal”Today the development cycle for a new product is between

56–108 months, until it becomes public. Not included the timefor research! Nowadays it’s well-known that global markets –and therefore also the globalisation in competition – is the cru-cial factor for time-to-market!

In the growing sections of fine chemicals and specialchemicals – analogue to the pharmaceutical industry – theswiftness of market launches determines more and more theeconomic success than technical excellence. Against thesebackground development cycles of 10 years or longer – fromproduct idea to implementation of a plant – don’t appear suit-able.

The savings potentialSo – where is the savings potential to launch a product at

the market?The process development starts with laboratory proce-

dures, which check the principle producibility with the desiredfeatures. Based on this a process concept with the aid of mod-eling techniques and laboratory- and pilot experiments will bedeveloped.

The following basic engineering delivers the course of theprocedure and the anticipation data for the detail engineer-ing. Following to that comes procurement, assembly and ac-tivation of the plant.

The use of mathematical model, MiniPlant instead of Pi-lotPlant, simultaneous handling of development, planning andprocurement processes are steps to shorten up the neededtime!

Modularisation, workflow, reusabilityLet’s focus on the area of plant manufacturing, in which

the influence of CADISON® is most visible. Not only in the areaof plant manufacturing you can save time with modularisation,system assisted workflow, reusability of modules, the replica-ble transparency respectively the transparency of develop-ment and the support of module libraries.

Mr Kremer, has “integrated plant de-sign” already become an issue for themoremedium-sized plant engineeringfirms?

I think so. It’s obvious in the integra-tion of 2D and 3D design, in whichCADISON® in particular can play out itsstrengths: end-to-end integration fromthe basic flow chart, through P&ID to 3Dplant design. Depending on which pieceof equipment you want to use, you defineit first as an object in the P&ID, and thendo the detailed engineering in the 3Ddiagram. If it’s a one-off design, thenAutoCAD functions are used, but if it’s apart of a library, then a direct MATPIPEextension is used.

The information defined there is usedto automatically generate the isometries.Transfer to Rohr2 software is also possi-ble in order to conduct structure me-chanics analyses. For this purpose,working together with Sigma Ingenieur-gesellschaft (manufacturer of the Rohr2application) and the CADISON® clientWINGAS, we have extended the existinginterface, enabling 95- to 99-percentdata transfer from CADISON®. That’s anexcellent rating for an interface.

Have you thought about the wayback, I mean data transfer from Rohr2to CADISON®?

We’re working on that. That’s partic-ularly interesting for companies lookingfor high integration of the designprocess.

For what percentage of your clients isit interesting?

I reckon, for around 15 to 20 percent.

You’re right. We see a very definiteneed for it. Certainly a whole load of 2Dand 3D design solutions have foundtheir place on the market. Here we havecome up against competition, as thetools are compatible …

So you need good arguments to con-vince the clients. Which ones do youput forward?

The integrated data use withCADISON® forms the core of our argu-mentation and our own conviction. Inaddition, we ensure our clients have anextremely good pipeline to our softwaredevelopers to realize quick fixes forthose problems that don’t exist as yet.The other exceptional aspect is that weare not only a software but also an engi-neering partner. In our capacity as ageneral contractor, we arrange for theplacement of qualified staff to ensurethe success of the client project. Thismakes ITF unique and in demand on themarket.

Please give us an example.We are currently working on a proj-

ect in Indonesia that comprises a com-plete engineering contract includingsupply of the software. If we had just

been supplying software, we would nothave been given this opportunity; theclient wanted everything from onesource. The design tool was certainlyimportant to the client, but it was not thesole criterion for his decision, the clientwas far more concerned that the plantshould be designed according toschedule and he would have one con-tact partner to deal with all aspects andissues.

Can you tell us how you realize sucha project?

We do the design work in an affilia-tion of companies: be it together with Tri-plan or Neilsoft as preferred partners, orthrough companies from CADISON®’senvironment. We were able to persuadesome of our customers to act asCADISON® service providers and oper-ate as such on the market.

Is the multi-site plant design particu-larly important to your clients?

Increasingly so. The basic design forpremium engineering projects is usuallyrealized in Central Europe (safeguard-ing know-how), whereas more and morefrequently the detail engineering is mov-ing east, if not to the Far East, becausecheaper resources are available there.Associated with this is the question ofmulti-site data transfer, not only on CADfile level, but also with regard to the rec-onciliation of CADISON® databases inorder to really improve efficiency.

For it’s not just a matter of cost ben-efits when it comes to staff – an em-ployee in India might cost perhaps justhalf of one in this country – but it is alsoimportant to preserve data integrity be-cause otherwise the subsequent reworkcan lead to extra costs that outweigh thecost benefits elsewhere.

Is there any way to save on the ITcosts, too?

platforms. Clients are looking for alterna-tives and the Visio platform fromMicrosoftnow offers an attractive option. This caneasily be used to generate P&IDs, butanything else you might think of in 2D too.We have been supplying this solutionsince the beginning of this year.

How high is the cost benefit?90 percent. That’s something deci-

sion-makers really like to hear.

Speaking of costs: how high are theadministration costs for CADISON®?

On the one hand we use the world-wide standard platforms such as Auto-CAD and MS-Office, which substantiallyreduces the training costs. Installation ofCADISON® is easy too: a ready-to-useenvironment is provided, in which 80percent of the settings can already bepractically used. The remaining 20 per-cent are done by ITF consultants. Butmost customers don’t have any difficultyin realizing these settings themselves. Itisn’t necessary to learn a programminglanguage. You only need to follow a sys-tem. The user doesn’t need to botherabout the administration of the data-base. The system does that automati-cally in the background.

And everyone is talking about 64-bitITF too?

You should come to this year’sCADISON® International Conference,which will be held on 30 September and1 October in Darmstadt, Germany. High-light at this event will be the première ofthe 64-bit version of CADISON®. We arecurrently completing the final trial runand we can already say that you canuse it to design any size of plant. Bench-marks with the 32-bit version haveshown that the 64-bit version is 2 to 5times faster.
