The Ringling is a center for art and history, situated on 66 acres of grounds and gardens along the shore of Sarasota Bay. It is built on the remarkable legacy of circus entrepreneur, collector of art, and financier John Ringling and his wife Mable.

The Ringling inspires visitors with an acclaimed collection of Old Master paintings, delights them with the story of the American circus, told through the first American circus museum and the world’s largest circus model, and transports them to the Roaring Twenties during a tour of the magnificent Ca’ d’Zan mansion.

The Ringling is also committed to exhibiting the work of an emerging community of living artists whose work moves beyond traditional practice and features dynamic and engaging contemporary visual and performing arts, including a diverse roster of theater, music, dance, and film.

PHANTOM BODIES: THE HUMAN AURA IN ART

MUSEUM OF ARTJUN 17 – SEP 11

Organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, Tennessee, the installation of Phantom Bodies: The Human Aura in Art at The Ringling will be overseen by Dr. Matthew McLendon, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. The exhibition considers the relationship between mind, body, and soul through a selection of paintings, photography, videos, sculpture, and installations that are designed to inspire compassion and commemoration. The four thematically distinct sections —”Objects and Absences,” “Violence, Empathy, and Erasure,” “Sublimation,” and “The Mind-Body Problem”— each offer a particularly compelling lens through which to view contemporary works of art.

Support for this exhibition was provided by the Amicus Foundation Endowment, the Robert G. and Diane D. Roskamp Endowment, and the Arthur F. and Ulla R. Searing Endowment.

EXPOSURE: NAKED BEFORE THE LENS

MUSEUM OF ARTMAY 20 – SEP 25

The subject of the nude human form has played a significant role in the history of Western art for millennia. With its origins in Greco-Roman antiquity, the idealized male nude form was a metaphor for virtue and moral excellence, while the beauty of the female nude celebrated fertility. Because of its defining characteristics, photography has had a more complicated relationship with nudity. Since the camera captures minutiae and detail indiscriminately, photographs can offer an immediate connection to time, place, and the relationship between photographer and model. Although many photographers have used their medium to perpetuate the form of the idealized nude, others have explored other possibilities offered by the nude, including issues of desire, intimacy, or vulnerability—or even what we might define as “nakedness.” The exhibition presents the many ways in which 20th- and 21st-century photographers have presented the undressed human body in their work.

GRAPHICSTUDIO: COLLABORATING ACROSS BORDERS

MUSEUM OF ARTJUL 7 – OCT 9

Founded in 1968 at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Graphicstudio is an acclaimed workshop dedicated to realizing collaborative projects with contemporary artists. What has made Graphicstudio exceptional in its nearly 50 years of operation is the fact that it has been an innovator in both the technical practices of art and the concept of collaboration. The workshop has pushed the boundaries of the traditional forms of graphic arts, developed new processes, and extended the concept of the auditioned multiple into mixed-media and sculptural forms. Since the

1990s, Graphicstudio has expanded its scope of collaboration in an ongoing series of invitations to contemporary artists from across Latin America to work at the studio. These projects have resulted in provocative new artworks while creating meaningful connections between artists and new audiences across cultures. This exhibition showcases The Ringling’s collection of Graphicstudio editions that feature collaborations with Latin American artists.

CIRCUS CELEBRITIES: PORTRAITURE IN THE AMERICAN CIRCUS POSTER

CIRCUS MUSEUMOPENS JUNE 24

Celebrities today rely on the wide distribution of their images to build audiences and enthusiasm. It was not so very different 100 years ago for the center ring stars of the American circus.

During the heyday of printed circus advertising, one of the most difficult measures of fame for performers to achieve was to merit their own “paper.” Especially impressive were those select few performers whose portraits were included alongside images of their fantastic accomplishments. Posters helped potential audiences form opinions about the quality and excitement of the show that was coming to their town. This poster exhibition provides a glimpse into the extraordinary art of commercial lithography while also enticing us with the images of the men and women who entertained the masses in the early 20th century.

May 6 HANGMENOlivier and Academy Award® winner Martin McDonagh returns to the West End with Matthew Dunster’s award-winning production of his deeply funny new play Hangmen. In his small pub in the northern English town of Oldham, Harry is something of a local celebrity. But what’s the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they’ve abolished hanging? Amongst the cub reporters and pub regulars dying to hear Harry’s reaction to the news, his old assistant Syd and the peculiar Mooney lurk with very different motives for their visit. Run time: 2.5 hours

May 20 LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSESIn Christopher Hampton’s irresistible adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos’ 18th-century novel, former lovers compete in games of seduction and revenge. Merteuil incites Valmont to corrupt the innocent Cecile de Volanges, but Valmont has targeted the peerlessly virtuous and beautiful Madame de Tourvel. While these merciless aristocrats toy with others’ hearts and reputations, their own may prove more fragile than they supposed. Run time: 2.75 hours

PROGRAMS

MAY 10CONVERSATION ABOUT PAUL RUDOLPHPaul Rudolph is considered one of America’s most important architects. We are most fortunate that he chose to practice here in Sarasota and the surrounding community. Join us for this program that will focus on Rudolph’s legacy in Florida. The program will include a visit to the Walker Guest House Replica located on The Ringling grounds and a book signing event with architect and Rudolph scholar Joe King.

JUN 28CONVERSATION ABOUT NAZI-ERA LOOTED ART During the Second World War the Nazis confiscated hundreds of thousands of works of art in Europe. These objects were stolen or, in some cases, the owners were forced to sell them at a low price. Due to a collaborative effort on the part of museums, scholars, and other professionals, many of these objects were restored to their original owners. These efforts of discovery and restitution continue and have caught the public’s interest through well-publicized court cases, books, and films. Learn about the processes and ethics involved in Nazi-Era Provenance research and what The Ringling has learned about its own collection through research conducted by Lauren vonBechmann, Curatorial Research Fellow.

JUL 12CONVERSATION WITH COLLECTORSPhotography was arguably the key medium of the 20th century and is a key aspect of contemporary art. Yet, it is one of the few areas of fine art collecting where it is still possible to make acquisitions without having the assets of a billionaire. We invite you to join a conversation with photography collectors from our community who will share what they have learned as they assembled their collections; what drives their focus and interests; what to look for in a photograph; why they are passionate about collecting; and to learn more about The Ringling’s growing collection.

AUG 16CONVERSATION...WHY IS THAT PERSON NAKED…OR IS IT NUDE?The depiction of the human form has almost always been one of the foremost challenges of artists throughout time, whether for religious purposes, capturing the likeness of an individual through a portrait, or just the sheer challenge of it. This summer’s special exhibitions, Phantom Bodies and Exposure, showcase a variety of approaches that artists have used to depict the human body. Discussion led by Museum staff.

SEP 13CONVERSATION ABOUT ORIENTALISM AT THE RINGLINGThe new Center for Asian Art presents a wide array of art objects from a number of different Asian countries and cultures. While we now recognize the significant differences among these Asian societies, it wasn’t that long ago that the Western world used the inclusive term “the Orient” or the “Far East” to describe India, Pakistan, China, Japan, Southeast Asia, and other nearby countries. Using examples from The Ringling’s collections, we’ll look at the history of orientalism, the impact it has had on our perception of Asia, and where we stand today.

Less formal than a lecture presentation, Conversations are designed to be programs where staff and guests can share research projects or topics of special interest. All programs take place in the Chao Lecture Hall on the third floor of the Center for Asian Art in the Dr. Helga Wall-Apelt Gallery of Asian Art.

MAY 5 MOTHERHOOD:THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE ?Being a “good” mother or a “bad” mother may mean different things in other times and cultures. As a homage to mothers everywhere, take a light-hearted look at the scope of what “mothering”

means through the lens of selected works in The Ringling’s permanent collection. We might all be extra appreciative of the mothers we have.

JUN 23PHANTOM BODIES: BEHIND THE SCENESThe works in this exhibition represent a wide variety of media: photography, sculpture, painting, video, and installations. Mounting a show of this diversity requires a great deal of

pre-planning on the part of The Ringling staff. Get the inside story of what it takes to bring you these exhibitions.

JUL 14EXPOSURE: NAKED BEFORE THE LENSThe rich resources of The Ringling’s growing photography collection provide opportunities for a variety of focused exhibitions. This show explains the idea of what we mean by “naked” and “nude” and how those

concepts are interpreted through the “lens” of very different artists.

AUG 18PHANTOM BODIES: THE HUMAN AURA IN ARTThough the title of this exhibition may be puzzling, we have all experienced the phenomena presented in this show. Join us for this walk and talk that will address the themes and ideas explored in Phantom Bodies and how a selection of artists has chosen to explore them.

SEP 15GRAPHICSTUDIODid you know that one of the most innovative studios for the realization of contemporary art projects is located on the campus of University of South Florida in Tampa? THU, JUN 16 PHANTOM BODIES: THE HUMAN AURA IN ART PHANTOMS AND AURASMark W. Scala, Chief Curator, Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville, TN

The exhibition’s title comes from the phantom limb syndrome, the painful or comforting sensation that a missing body part remains in place. If, when an arm is lost, there is a body to feel its presence, where does phantom sensation reside when a person is lost; when a family or a community, an entire culture, is erased? In this exhibition, art acts as the phantom limb of the corpus of society, triggering the longing to fill the spaces that accrue through loss with beauty, empathy, images of grief, and suggestions of a soul that transcends the physical plane. In discussing the representation of the absent body, Scala will explore ways that a work of art can seem to be infused with an invisible presence, an aura, that leads to a feeling of connection to the missing or dead.

JUN 11 Charlie Chan and Fu ManchuTwo short classic films illustrating at least two different American views of Chinese people. The good Charlie Chan helps solve mysteries. For obvious reasons, we have chosen to show Charlie Chan at the Circus. In contrast, the evil Fu Manchu, played by Boris Karloff in The Mask of Fu Manchu, searches for the tomb of Genghis Khan so he can take over the world. 72 and 68 minutes, respectively.

JUL 9 Mr. Moto filmsPeter Lorre stars in both these short films as an intrepid Japanese secret agent. In Thank You Mr. Moto, he pursues stolen Chinese antiquities, while in Mr. Moto Takes a Chance he explores ancient temples in Southeast Asia. 69 and 63 minutes, respectively.

Join us for our inaugural film series to celebrate The Ringling’s galleries devoted to Asian art. We begin our connection by exploring the complex historical relationship of America and Asia through a critical examination of films that have played an integral role in American popular culture. Since that time, while we have mostly moved beyond simplistic depictions of stereotypical Asian characters, these films indicate that it was not always so. Our discussions will focus on the ways in which American culture has fostered such images.

AUG 13 The Man Who Would be KingSean Connery and Michael Caine portray two British men who stumble on the isolated kingdom of Kafiristan, bearing a strong resemblance to the mountainous areas of South Asia. The Westerners plot and scheme to take advantage of the trusting local inhabitants and their treasure. 129 minutes.

SEP 10 RamboIn this Sylvester Stallone vehicle, Rambo rescues missionaries from corrupt generals in Burma/Myanmar. Whether you are a Stallone fan or not, this film has much to say about the American intervention in Southeast Asia. 92 minutes.
