The Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) is the largest Catholic
school district in Alberta, serving more than 54,000 students in 105 schools
located in Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere and Rocky View County.
We educate and empower students from kindergarten to Grade 12 through
our mission of Living and Learning in our Catholic Faith.
As a publicly-funded Catholic school district, we are committed to provid-
ing a high-quality Catholic education that allows our students to develop into
lifelong learners. The province of Alberta conducts testing each year to deter-
mine how students are performing academically. CCSD students consistently
show a strong performance on provincial examinations, demonstrating our
district’s commitment to academic excellence. Our students are continually
recognized with awards and accolades provincially, nationally and internation-
ally for their academic achievement.
Central to the success of our district is employing the most talented and dedi-
cated staff members within our schools and offices. More than 5,000 employ-
ees dedicate their efforts to help make a difference for the children, families
and staff in our care. Our teaching staff is held to high professional standards
and must hold valid teaching certification prior to commencement of employ-
ment with a district school. The rigorous certification process for our teachers
requires at least four years of university education, including a bachelor of
education degree.
3
Calgary Catholic School District
Calgary Catholic is proud of the many programs and opportuni-
ties available for our students. All CCSD schools offer a wide variety of
courses and follow standard curriculum requirements to achieve a high
school diploma. Our schools are modern learning environments that focus
on encouraging each individual student to achieve academic excellence.
Each of the 105 schools within our district has a designated attendance area
that defines the communities it serves. Schools that host specific programs
of choice may serve a wider attendance area for those students who wish to
enrol in a particular program. Attendance area information is updated yearly
and is available on our website.
Catholicity Our schools operate within an educational philosophy illuminated by the
Gospel message. Catholic values are dimensions of the school climate;
they are expressed in words, sacrament, individual behaviour and inter-
personal relationships. CCSD is proud that our schools are places where
students, staff and families have opportunities to experience God’s pres-
ence in their lives.
Catholic Community of Caring All CCSD schools have an established Catholic Community of Caring (CCC)
based on the values of faith, caring, respect, responsibility, trust and family.
The CCC focuses on building respectful and compassionate school environ-
ments, rooted in Catholic values.
Within our schools, we are building more inclusive communities where respect
for one another, our community and our diversity are celebrated. Using these
values as building blocks, each school creates a positive school community
by developing relationships through activities such as student leadership
conventions, social justice projects and professional development opportuni-
ties. Through the incorporation of its essential elements into the daily life of
school, a climate is created where the whole school community embraces
these values. Our priority is to ensure that all of our students are provided with
a safe and caring school environment where they can excel and be healthy
and productive learners.
Healthy Choices for Healthy Learners Nutrition is important for growth, development, learning and activity. Children
spend a large part of their day at school where they are exposed to many
influences when it comes to food choices. Healthy eating messages are
reinforced when food served or sold in the school setting is consistent with
classroom teachings. Our aim is to provide school environments that support
healthy choices for students.
CCSD is committed to a holistic approach to building students’ knowledge
about health. The Healthy Choices for Healthy Learners initiative supports stu-
dents, parents and teachers and provides information that assists in making
healthier choices. The district supports education about healthy choices that
permeates curriculum and the culture in schools.

About Our Schools
We are proud to provide an extensive range of programs from
kindergarten through to Grade 12 to enhance the knowledge and individual
abilities of students. By providing a supportive environment in which students
can learn, problem solve and set goals, Calgary Catholic presents a path for
student success.
To meet each student’s unique needs, there are a number of program options
available for students to pursue their interests and develop their strengths,
while supporting their journey in education. All district programs follow the
Alberta Education Programs of Study in a faith-based environment. We offer a
comprehensive choice of additional programs and services in collaboration with
our many partners in the community.
A student who wishes to access one of these district recognized programs
outside of their school boundary must meet specific criteria for the program.
Please inquire at your local school for more information.
Advanced PlacementThe Advanced Placement (AP) program is a cooperative educational
endeavour between high schools and universities. AP courses allow high
school students to experience university-level academic learning in addi-
tion to Alberta Education curriculum. Students may receive credit, advanced
placement, or both from participating colleges and universities. Through
the experiences gained in AP courses, students are better prepared for the
rigors of university life.
Bishop Grandin Marching Band Bishop Grandin Marching Ghosts is the only high school marching band
available in western Canada. As a result, students are able to attend Bishop
Grandin High School from all areas of Calgary if they wish to become involved
in this internationally recognized music program. The Bishop Grandin March-
ing Ghosts are perennial winners of show and marching band competitions
throughout Canada and have gained an international reputation for excellence
by participating in various summer competitions.

Programs
Dual Credit Programs The Dual Credit program provides the opportunity for Grade 11 and 12 stu-
dents to earn high school credits in conjunction with either post-secondary
credits or workplace certification at one of our CTS Centres of Excellence.
The purpose of the program is to provide opportunities for students to per-
sonalize their high school experience by exploring and building on their career
interests.
Career fields in the Apprenticeship Technical Programs include:
• AutomotiveServiceTechnician
• Carpentry
• CulinaryArts(Cook)
Hockey Canada Skills AcademyHockey Canada partners with CCSD to offer an exciting optional program
for students. This program is offered at the elementary, junior high and high
school level in select schools. Students have the opportunity to learn hockey
skills, leadership, teamwork and fitness during the school day. These pro-
grams are run by certified teachers with extensive hockey backgrounds.
Hockey Canada supplies resources and training to our teachers giving stu-
dents an advantage as they develop their hockey skills. Students have on-ice
training up to twice a week with one off-ice training session as well.
International Baccalaureate The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a rigorous, worldwide academic
program based on an internationally recognized curriculum. IB students
complete Alberta Education prescribed curriculum as well as additional cur-
riculum outlined by the international IB organization. Focused on providing
a broad, liberal arts program base, IB is globally recognized as excellent
preparation for university studies. The program is ideally suited for students
who wish to engage in studies beyond the mandated Alberta Education
Program of Studies.
The IB Diploma Programme is offered in Grade 11 and 12 and is designed
to fulfil admission requirements of major universities around the world. Stu-
dents may pursue either a full diploma program, which incorporates all aca-
demic disciplines along with an opportunity to develop research and study
skills or subject-specific certificates, which provide targeted enrichment and
allow students to challenge themselves in chosen academic areas.

Fine Arts SchoolsThe Fine Arts are comprised of art, drama and music. Students are involved
as creators, performers, historians, critics and consumers. Fine Arts
Schools enable students in elementary and junior high to
enhance the depth and breadth of their expression and
intuitive response to the fine arts.

French Immersion French Immersion is a form of bilingual education. Students are taught the
curriculum mandated by Alberta Education using French as the medium for
instruction, becoming functionally bilingual by Grade 12. Students have op-
portunities to participate in cultural events and extracurricular activities that
enhance their understanding of the French language. Several options for French
Immersion programming are available. Early French Immersion is available
for entry at the kindergarten or Grade 1 level. Students who have completed
Grade 6 in an all-English regular program may enter a three-year Late French
Immersion program in Grade 7. The senior high Extended French program is
offered to students entering Grade 10, who have completed the Early or Late
French Immersion program in Grade 9. Students are able to take a maximum of
three courses in French per year: French Language Arts, Études sociales and
Mathématiques and those graduating from the program receive a certificate of
completion.
Italian Language and CultureThe Italian Language and Culture program offers elementary and junior high
students the opportunity to study Italian in addition to their regular program
of study. Students will develop Italian language and communication skills and
participate in various cultural activities.
Spanish Bilingual We offer a Spanish Bilingual program. Students enrolled in the program become
functionally bilingual by Grade 12. The Alberta Education Program of Studies
is taught in all courses and students divide their time evenly, studying 50 per
cent in Spanish and 50 per cent in English. The program allows students to gain
insight into the Spanish language and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries
around the world. Students receive recognition in grades 6, 9 and 12 from the
government of Spain.
Languages Learning a second language greatly contributes to a student’s educational
experiences, personal growth and development of higher level thinking skills.
It can expand career opportunities and develop skills that prepare them for
the world of work.
All second language programs in the Calgary Catholic School District follow
the Alberta Education Programs of Study, with a particular emphasis on
the Communicative Approach to language learning that focuses on having
students use the target language in authentic learning experiences. In
delivering its second language programs, the district recognizes that the
target language, whether French, Spanish, Filipino or Italian, is not the
prevalent language of the student’s home and community. As a result,
instructional strategies and materials are designed for students who do not
speak the language at home or in the community.
Filipino Language and CultureThe Filipino Language and Culture three-year program is intended for students
who are beginning their study of the Filipino language and culture in senior
high school. The courses contain outcomes related to learning the Filipino
language in a variety of situations and for a variety of purposes. Students will
learn to use the language effectively and competently, acquire the knowledge,
skills and attitudes to be effective, global citizens, and know and use strategies
to maximize the effectiveness of learning and communication. The Filipino
Language and Culture program is offered at Bishop McNally High School.

Strings ProgramChamber EnsembleBishop Carroll High School is the only high school in the Calgary Catholic
School District that offers a Chamber Ensemble Strings Program. This pro-
gram affords students to continue their study of music on a string instru-
ment while engaging in numerous ensemble settings. In this environment,
students are able to continue to develop advanced music performance skill
from an already established foundation of music performance skill sets.
Instrumental MusicSt. Jean Brebeuf Junior High School is the only junior high school in the
Calgary Catholic School District that offers an Instrumental Music Strings
Program. This program offers students an opportunity to study music in an
ensemble setting, while learning a string instrument at a beginner level. Stu-
dents will develop musical skills and knowledge throughout the program.
Workplace SchoolSt. Angela Workplace School is a small elementary school located in the
heart of Calgary within the community of Bridgeland. As a workplace school,
St. Angela supports parents who work in or close to Calgary’s downtown
core and want their children to be in a school located close to their work-
place. St. Angela Workplace School features access to an onsite before and
after school program provided by an independent local organization. St.
Angela has limited options for parking available, to allow families to travel
from communities across Calgary.
Year-Round Education Year-Round Education is a school year calendar formatted to more closely
match the continuous learning patterns of children. The school year is bal-
anced into four equal terms with students getting a shortened summer vaca-
tion and going back to school in August. Children receive the same educa-
tion as those following the traditional calendar, as they follow the same
Alberta Education mandated curriculum.
Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP)The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is an opportunity for high school
students to complete their high school diploma while also working as an indentured
apprentice, earning credits. They build hours towards a Journeyman’s Certificate
in one of Alberta’s more than 50 trades. Worksites are approved, a learning plan is
established and a teacher supervises the student’s experience.
Self-Directed Learning Bishop Carroll High School offers a self-directed personalized program of stud-
ies. Bishop Carroll students are free to study Alberta Education curriculum at a
pace that best suits their individual needs and interests, with the ongoing support
of a strong and effective teacher-advisory system. Students follow an individual
program of studies that accounts for their unique abilities as individual learners.
The main advantage of self-directed learning is that it empowers the student to
take more responsibility and interest in decisions that will affect their education.
A Bishop Carroll student is not only given the freedom to choose but learns the
responsibility that accompanies such freedom. This is a valuable skill that enters
into their lives both in post-secondary institutions and the world of work.
Single Gender The Single Gender program is offered at Sacred Heart, a kindergarten to Grade
6 elementary school. The program allows both boys and girls to attend school
in the same building, but divided into different classrooms for the majority of the
school day. Students have the opportunity to socialize with each other during
recess, lunch hour, intramurals, choir and other extracurricular activities, and
participate in liturgical celebrations as a whole school activity.

CCSD is committed to providing a safe, efficient and economical
method of transporting eligible students to and from school.
Elementary StudentsKindergarten to Grade 6 students are eligible for transportation when they live fur-
ther than 1.2 km from their designated school. When numbers warrant, morning
and afternoon charter transportation (and noon service for kindergarten children)
will be provided for kindergarten to Grade 6 students who are required to travel
outside their community to their designated school. CCSD charges a transporta-
tion fee for eligible elementary students and all students in special education.
Junior and Senior High Students (City of Calgary)
Junior and Senior High students who live further than 2.4 km from their desig-
nated school may purchase Calgary Transit monthly bus passes at a reduced cost
for travel to and from school.
Programs of Choice Kindergarten to Grade 6 students who attend programs of choice are eligible to
receive transportation.
Students Living Outside Calgary Students from kindergarten to Grade 12 who reside in the Airdrie, Chestermere
and Cochrane area should contact their local Catholic school or the Transporta-
tion department at 403-500-2458 for service information. Rocky View School
District Transportation Office arranges transportation for CCSD students living in
these areas.
My First Ride Program CCSD is proud to be part of a school bus safety program for young elemen-
tary students who have never been on a school bus. The program consists of
a presentation on bus safety followed by a first ride on a bus and concludes
with receiving safety handouts, snacks and school district busing information.
The program is free and is made possible through the generous support of local
sponsors and is a collaborative project involving various school boards and bus
carriers.

Transportation
Registration is ongoing throughout the school year. To register, contact your
local CCSD school. All families are encouraged to inquire at their local school.
For assistance in determining which school is designated for your area, please
visit the Schools section of our website, or phone 403-500-2000.
Kindergarten All elementary schools offer a half-day kindergarten program. Depending
on total kindergarten enrolment, schools may offer a choice of morning or
afternoon classes on a first-come, first-served basis. To qualify to register
for kindergarten, your child must turn four years old on or before March 1
in order to attend kindergarten in the fall of that same calendar year. Your
child’s birth certificate should be presented at the time of registration.
Grade 1 To register in Grade 1, children must turn five years old on or before March 1 to
qualify to begin Grade 1 in the fall of that same calendar year. The child’s birth
certificate and one parent’s Catholic baptismal certificate should be presented
at the time of registration. Contact your local elementary school for more
information. Children who are already attending kindergarten do not need to
re-register for Grade 1.
Parents of students not previously registered at any grade level should call the
school for an appointment to register.

Registration
Designated Boundaries for SchoolsThe Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) has designated boundaries for
all schools. CCSD uses boundaries strategically to ensure optimal student
populations that support viable programming across the district. It is the
expectation that students will attend their designated school. Please be
aware that school attendance boundaries can and do change to accommo-
date factors including changing demographic information, the opening or
closing of a school, to relieve overcrowding in schools, etc.
The attached maps have been provided for the convenience of parents and
students for reference as a guide only. CCSD cannot guarantee their ac-
curacy or precision after the printing of this booklet. These maps should be
used only as a guide and should not be used to determine school atten-
dance or transportation eligibility.
Parents are encouraged to contact the school directly to determine eligibil-
ity or to phone 403-500-2000 for more information. CCSD will not be held
liable for any actions taken, decisions made, or actions not taken from reli-
ance on any information presented in the attached maps. The most current
boundary and program information for all schools can be found online at
www.cssd.ab.ca.
Students with Diverse Learning NeedsStudents with diverse learning needs are eligible to a continuum of sup-
ports, services and educational programs that are aligned with their abili-
ties, strengths and interests. Students with diverse learning needs include
a range of cultures, languages and those students who require targeted
and/or specialized supports and services. As mandated by Alberta Edu-
cation, the focus is on the creation of student learner profiles in order to
ensure that support for diverse learners is provided through individualized
and personalized learning programs that can be delivered in a regular
classroom or in a specialized program. Students with diverse learning
needs should register at their local school, which is a parent’s first con-
tact for specialized programming information, support and consultation.
St. John Reception Centre Students who are born outside of Canada register through the St. John
Reception Centre (15 12 Street NW), even if they have attended school
elsewhere in Alberta or Canada. At the centre, students will be assessed for
their English language levels and placed in an appropriate program. Parents
who wish to register their children should make an appointment by phoning
403-500-2007.
