She consistently earned her way onto the Forbes maga-zine list of 100 Most Powerful

Women, heralded with the likes of Hillary Clinton and Sandra Day OConnorand at one point, well above Oprah and Queen Elizabeth II.Yet Christine Poon, the

vice chairman and worldwide chairman of pharmaceuticals at Johnson & Johnson, would nonetheless sit and unas-sumingly read on the train ride into work. The worlds highest-ranking woman in the pharmaceutical industry parked her car at the station instead of in the company ga-rage with the executives who worked under her.No one would ever say,

OK, this is one of the most high-powered women execu-tives in America, riding the train like everyone else, said Jose Zito Sartarelli, Johnson & Johnsons company group chairman for pharmaceuticals in Asia-Pacific, Japan and Latin America. Executives tend to congregate up. She didnt have a need for that. Very independent, very approachable, very special in

that respect. Very unique. And now, shes very

uniquely Central Ohios. Ohio State University, and specifi-cally President E. Gordon Gee, convinced Poon, 57, to forego her planned retirement and instead take the reins of the Fisher College of Business. Less than a year into her tenure, shes already creating a one-of-a-kind collaboration program teaming Fisher with local businesses, and shes dreaming up plans to seek technologies or inventions from other colleges at Ohio State that Fisher students could commercialize. As she recently sat in her

sunny campus office, Poon, a minority woman who forged her way through a white mans world during an era of smoke-filled boardrooms, thought-fully measured her comments, whether about her recent weekend getaway to Colorado or her venture into academia. Its almost as if one can see her think, as if no word will be wasted. For me, every day is sort

of a thrill, Poon said. I never thought I could find some-thing to do that was more re-warding than the first 30 years of my life. But I suspect this

could rise to that magnitude.Gee was delighted to score

such a coup. Universities are littered with people from the business world who think they understand how to act in an educational institution, he said. But Poonwho intro-duces herself as Chris and of-fers to hang the coats of guests who enter her officelistens as she leads, and has earned respect for doing so. Shes just not an ostenta-

tious or a bloated person in any sense of the word, Gee said. She has the respect of her colleagues. She has the respect of our students. And shes interacting very well with our external community. Plus, he noted, theres the fame factor: She brings enormous experience and star power.Poon worked her way to

worldwide respect (she hit 17 on the Forbes list in 2004) us-ing an arsenal of talentsraw smarts, an insatiable appetite for knowledge, a tireless work ethic and what longtime col-league Sartarelli calls emo-tional intelligence. She honed those skills

from an early age growing up near Cincinnati, where her parentsboth first-generation Chinese-Americanshad high expectations for Poon and her six siblings. Once, in elementary school,

Poon brought home a report card with Cs, excitedly show-ing them off, thinking that average was exactly what one should aim to be. Her father, an Army veteran and oph-thalmologist, reviewed her grades and made one simple statement. Bs, he said, are

A WOMANS WORLDWhen Christine Poons career began, she was typically the only woman in business meetingssomething shes happy has changed. Ive gone from the time a meeting would be smoke-filled when you were done to a place where its rare to be the only woman in the room, she said. But why, she asked, does Forbes need a list nam-ing the most powerful women? We ought to hope for the time we dont need a separate list for women, she said. Because that will mean its not just representation in numbers.

Once ranked the 17th most powerful woman in the world, CHRISTINE POON has ditched retirement plans to run Ohio States business school

  • better. Average, a young Poon quickly realized, is never the goal.Poon was learning lessons

in leadership and compassion, too. As the second oldest of seven, she embraced her role as a leader, said her youngest sister, Jeanette Caruso. And as a minority, she figured out how to find her spot among other children, while develop-ing what has become a lifelong willingness to understand others points of view. She grew up in a place

where I think she was the only Chinese girl in her class in grade school, and that means you have to find a way to fit in, said her husband, Michael Tweedle. Theres a barrier for you to overcome so that people both like and respect you. Following in her doctor

fathers footsteps, Poon earned her degree in pre-med from Northwestern University. But instead of applying to medical schools (Organic chemistry just mystified me, she laughs), she enrolled in graduate school at Saint Louis University to study biology and biochemistry. Soon, with another degree in hand, she packed all she owned into a Toyota Corolla and drove to Boston to work as a lab researcher for New England Nuclear, a young biotech company. Never mentally satisfied

and without having taken a single business class for her first two degreesPoon began MBA courses part-time at Boston University. She finished the program with a finance concentration, and her com-pany transitioned her from the lab to the office. Poon also found more than

a passion for business thereshe found her husband. Tweedle, a coworker on his way to becoming a renowned scientist in his own right (see

box), was clearly intrigued. Poon, he said, has an extraor-dinary ability to focus. But he echoed others sentiments that her emotional sensibilities are equally as stellar. Shes very sensitive to other

human beings, and shes a good listener, he said. Watch her at a dinner party, he sug-gestedshell be as comfort-able talking with people at one end of the political spectrum as the other. I think its just a matter of

wanting to understand other peoples point of view, he said. She still has her own point of view, and its not likely to change unless she gets new data. But I think it comes from an openness and a desire to understand where other people are coming from and whats important to them.Poons rare knowledge

of both science and busi-ness, paired with the other attributes she long cultivated, propelled her to a job with biopharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb. She climbed until she was running all of the companys interna-tional companies. Eventually, she was snagged

by Johnson & Johnson, the worlds largest medical devices company, which runs more than 250 operating companies

in 57 countries and creates ev-erything from drugs to lotions. She earned a reputation as

an inspirational leader with a brilliant mind who genuinely cared for others, never losing herself in her role, Sartarelli said. She would engage in high-level strategy discussions about China, he noted, and then delve into the specif-ics of how the company was assuring that patients using their products were getting the support they needed. The en-dearing side of success is when you get your hands dirty, he said. Then they embrace you as a leader.Poon insists that being that

high-level leader was not a goal she consistently worked toward. For me, it was never about, I have to be the CEO or I have to be the vice presi-dent, she said. She aimed instead to be challenged, help-ful, progressing. Its not surprising, then,

that when asked what she is most proud of in her career, she doesnt talk about job titles or Forbes rankings. She talks about watching the success of employees she mentored. She talks about how 50-per-cent fewer people are dying of cardiovascular disease than when she first began in the industry. She talks about how she visited HIV clinics when there was no hope of survival and about how now, most people with the disease are livingand living wellfor years. She talks about how products her companies have made have alleviated pain and allowed patients to see a child born or a daughter married. If you can measure your success in millions of lives saved, she said, you should rest easy. That is, if she ever lets

herself rest. Since retirement has been put indefinitely on hold, Poon isnt getting the relaxation she had at first envisioned. But this, she

believes, is better. She is just a drive away from egg roll Sunday with her sister, and close enough to retrieve her nephews for weekends of Buckeye football or Blue Jack-ets hockey. While shes still working

fulltime hours, shes based at home, not globetrotting for significant stretches. And though its difficult squeezing it in, she and her husband are finding weekends to spend at their vacation home in Colo-rado, where they ski and golf. Next up? Poon hopes to take a few language courses at Ohio State so that she can converse with her parents in Cantonese. That certainly wont sur-

prise her youngest sister, who, despite a 15-year age gap, is particularly close with Poon. Shes proud of her sisters achievements, sure. But its difficult for her to see Poon as anything but the older sister she admiredand the aunt her sons adore. She recalled once walking

into her basement and finding Poon in a huge cardboard box with a gaggle of nieces and nephews running around her, laughing. Shes almost like a kid to them. When I ask, Who do you want to invite to your birthday party? Shes always one of them, Caruso said. Like shes one of their friends. So it goes that one of the

worlds most powerful women, who is now training the next generation of business leaders, plays in discarded refrig-erator boxes with the same self-assurance she had when unassumingly riding that train. And the best part might be that Christine Poon doesnt care who knows. The most important thing

you can be in the work world is just to be yourself, Poon said. Celebrate the fact you are differentand make the difference count.

WEVE STRUCK GOLDAfter Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee convinced Christine Poon to forgo her planned retirement and instead come to Ohio State, he discovered she had a husband who was also interested in a job at the university.

According to Poons comical version of the story, Gee rolled his eyes and asked for a resume. Then, he realized her husband is Mi-chael Tweedlea rock star in the science world who, among many achievements, invented a product used in MRI imaging. Now we have to find a job for Mike Tweedles wife! Gee proclaimed.

His version is a bit different. As soon as I saw his name, Gee recalled, I said, We have struck gold.

Tweedle is now working as a professor teaching radiology, and he is the Stefanie Spielman Chair in Cancer Imaging for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for breast cancer research. Poon and Tweedle have been married 27 years (five if you count actual nights spent together, Poon jokes). The couple lives in Bexley.

hen she was just a little girl, Crystal Boyce wanted to be a ballerina.

She twirled in her bed-room when no one was looking, she danced down the streets of her familys Linden neighborhood while all the other kids

played ball. She fantasized about the lights and dreamed of the stage. She wanted Broadway.

But others told her it would never happen. Instructors said she was too tall, out of proportion, that her shape was all wrong. She simply didnt fit the mold.

I was maybe 15, 16 years old, and to hear that was devastating, Boyce said. I was 5 foot 7 and 120 pounds, and they said I was too fat. I was trying not to eat and wearing plastic pants and running miles every day. I was killing myself.

I swore right then I would never tell another dancer that she didnt have the look.

The criticism didnt stop her. It drove her.

Today, Boyce is a successful dancer, instructor and the owner of Leap of Faith dance studio in the King-Lincoln District and Leap of Faith Dancewear Boutique in the shops at the Lincoln Theatre. Shes also a community volunteer and runs the dance ministry at St. Paul A.M.E. Church.

The role the 44-year-old treasures most, however, is that of wife and mother of two.

And she pulls all this off with a natural grace under what can sometimes be the cold and unkind spotlight of politics: She is married to former Columbus City Councilman Kevin L. Boyce, who now is Ohios treasurer.

There are a lot of circles now where people come up to me and say, Arent you Crystal Boyces husband? I just couldnt be more proud.

KEVIN BOYCE, Ohio treasurer and Crystals husband

spent the bulk of their childhoods on E. 25th Street. Peggy Porter took her children to plays, concerts and symphonies every chance she got, to expose them to what went on beyond the borders of a not-always-gentle neighborhood. And she did all this on a secretarys wage.

We didnt have a lot, but my mother found free things to take us to, or she vol-unteered for community theater just so we could all be a part of it, Boyce said. She wanted to open our eyes to opportunity.

After graduating from the Fort Hayes School of Performing Arts, studying at Ohio State and embarking on her own careers in both the political and corpo-rate worlds, Boyce opened Leap of Faith on East Long Street in 2004. Then, last November, she added her dancewear bou-tique just up the street.

Her ideas have been vital to the rebirth of the neighborhood and the renovation of the Lincoln Theatre, said William Conner,

ON BEING A MOTHER:Love your kids unconditionally and rememberthey are just kids. We put so much pressure on them, expect so much. Mine? I want them to be kids as long as they can be.

ON BEING A STRONG, SUCCESSFUL WOMAN:Have a passion for life, a passion for whats important. There will always be mountains and valleys, but you have to know they are just mountainsthat they just pop up, and with will and smarts and determination you can get over or around them.

president and CEO of the Colum-bus Association for the Performing Arts. CAPA and Leap of Faith have a longstanding partnership for public performances, and no one should ever doubt that Boyce runs the show, Conner said.

I do whatever she tells me, he said with a laugh. But he wasnt really joking. Thats what happens. People see her ambition and her drive, and they just naturally want to do what-ever they can to help her.

Publicly, he said, Boyce is the consummate professional. But there is a side she keeps very private.

I cannot count the dancers she had mentored. They cant pay tuition? She takes them anyway. She pays to send them to workshops, she makes professional contacts and uses her own resources to build them a foundation and get them on their way, Conner said. Dance is critically important to our culture, and what she does is demonstrate that anyone,

no matter who they are or how they look, should be allowed to dance.

Boyce isnt used to talking about herself and, between bites of an apple and sips of her protein water, its clear shes quite uncomfortable with it; its her husband who is generally in the spotlight.

The two are madly in love, their devotion to one another and to their family clear. Though she and Kevin live high-profile lives and keep de-manding schedules, they work hard to keep 11-year-old Kevin Jr. (K.J.) and 7-year-old Kristopher grounded.

K.J. takes out the trash, and Kristopher Swiffers the floor every night after dinner. Half of every bit of money the boys receive as gifts or earneven if its just a dollar from a neighbor grateful for help with a choregoes to Dad for the college fund.

Their first date was dinner at the now-defunct Christophers, located at the top of the Vern Riffe building.

It was fancy schmancy, and the salad tasted like weeds, Crystal recalled. We laughed and laughed. Something just connected for us, and we were inseparable from that moment on.

I knew by the end of the meal wed both rather be somewhere having chicken wings, Kevin said. There was nothing about her that wasnt amazing.

afternoon of snuggling and watching movies.

Crystal is always the last one to sit down at the table, the last one to turn off the light, the last one to lay her head down in the bed, Kevin said. But dancing with her students and taking care of her family is a calling, a spiritual journey for her. I thinkand I really believe this in my heartthat if someone of-fered her $10 million to make her life easier right now, she wouldnt trade her current life and her experiences for all the riches in the world.

Boyce packs her sons lunches and takes them to school, and then picks them up each day. She shares carpool duties for soccer, basketball and whatever else comes along.

Her husband, however, says shes not without faults: She refuses to put the toothpaste cap back on, and it drives me crazy. Its awful. I cant stand it. But hes learned to live with it.

His wife believes the tooth-paste cap is a tradeoff, payback for the fact that Kevin leaves a trail through the house each nightshoes, socks, jacket, tie, shirt, paperworkas if he might need to follow it to get back to the door. Oh, dont even get me started, she said.

Boyce spends her evenings and all day every Saturday teaching at the studio. Among her students are Juilliard hope-fuls and Broadway dreamers, plenty of girls with stars in their eyes. (She has boys and men in her classes, but they are much fewer in number.)

She teaches them to dance, yes. But when it comes to mentoring the girls, it really is about so much more.

A lot of my kids will never be professional dancers, she said. But they will be women. Strong and confident women, I hope. This is about teaching

them to be bold, to be strong and brave and courageous and to never let anything get the best of them.

The girls who take her classes are from a kaleido-scopic swath of society. She has doctors daughters and lawyers kids, girls hoping for Harvard and girls who may not make it through high school. She has students with parents in jail, students who will have nothing to eat when they go home and students who have no one but Boyce to ask them how they did on that science exam.

Im not their parent, and I

dont step over that line. But if the need is there, I make them accountable, Boyce said. If theyre having trouble in school, I say bring me your notes. If their grades are bad, I say bring me your tests. I know I cant save them all. But I believe in the power of prayer. So even if I cant save them alone, I pray and leave it in Gods hands.

Each class begins and ends with prayer and a time to share.

She gives us a safe environ-ment, said Kristiauna Trelay, a 26-year-old banker and a member of the The Crewzers,

the Columbus Crews dance team. She has taken classes at Leap of Faith over the years, and now teaches there.

We might start a class by talking about the world, like what happened in Haiti, and how we can help. Or we might start a class by talking about who got stood up on their date last night and how that made them feel, she said. With Miss Crystal, its like girl talk, you know. Nothing is off limits with her.

The students feed on Boyces stories, off her experiences. For she did indeed make it to New York. She made it to just

one dancers call.I saw all of these people

there, a thousand of them just like me, and they were clawing to get noticed and scraping to get by, and some of them had been doing that for years, she recalled. It wasnt for me. I knew then Id someday open a studio and give dancers some options.

She stayed about five weeks. When she returned to Colum-bus, her mother was waiting. It was Mrs. Porter, after all, who enrolled her daughter in ballet at the tender age of five. Back then, though, it had nothing to do with pursuing dreams.

Crystal is an awesome dancer, but she cant walk. Never has been able to. She still today trips over her own feet. Its the funni-est thing, said Porter, a secretary at University Hospital East. I put her in dance because all the

other little girls were doing it, and I thought maybe it would give her some coordination.

It didnt take long for her daughter to blossom. But it wasnt always easy, she knows. Boyce was often the only black girl in dance class, and she wondered why she had so few instructors who looked like her. And, her mother says, Crystal took the criticism of her dancers body to heart.

I told her not to mind what anybody said. I told her you can be anything you want to be, no matter what your size, no matter what your shape. You just use your mind and youll see.

When Boyce finally did get an African-American instruc-tor, they instantly bonded. Gail White-Dixon choreographed Boyce as a teenager, and the two remain best friends.

    I saw something special in

her, said White-Dixon, a fourth-grade teacher at a Columbus charter school. Now, I take classes from her. I love to be at the studio and watch her with her students. They just soak up the passion and power with which she dances, and I can see itliterally see itchanging their attitude. They watch her dance and think, I can be like that, too.

It is here, at Leap of Faith, where Boyce has found her pur-pose. Here, she doesnt just en-courage her students to try; she encourages them to try harder. She doesnt just teach them to dance; she teaches them to live. She doesnt just help them leap; she helps them soar.

And sometimes, she still twirls in her living room when no one is looking. Sometimes she still dances down the street while the neighborhood kids play ball.

If I can give these girls an hour of fun and faith, then maybe theyll turn that into a lifetime of the same.

In 2008, though, McAllisters husband was with-out a job, and her seasonal shopping trips stopped. Her nursing salary wasnt enough, and she eventually found her-self in need of extra cash. Everyone said, Do what

you love, she remembered. I thought, I love nothing more than Manhattan. Thats how my business was born. For the trips, which cost

$99 per person, McAllisters customers board a big bus on Bethel Road at 8 p.m. on Friday. They arrive in New York City at 7 a.m. Saturday, explore at will and jump back on the busshopping bags in handat 10 p.m. They arrive back in Columbus on Sunday morning. They are free to spend the

day as they wish, McAllister said. I am there to provide as much or as little guidance as they like.McAllister also works to

make the journey part of the fun. The trip includes chick flicks, raffle prizes and games en route. Then its lights out, so travelers can conserve en-

ergy for their whirlwind day. Sue Kimble, a 46-year-old

caregiver from Upper Arling-ton, was too excited to sleep. The fall bus trip she took with a group of girlfriends was her first to New York City.It was a blast. We did so

much sightseeing, shopping, eating, she said. I cant wait to do it again.McAllister prides herself on

preparing clients and helping some put together a plan of action.Theres nothing worse than

a group getting off the bus and one person wants to go here, another wants to eat there, she said. I work with them months in advance to be sure they make the most of their time in the city.McAllister also tailors the

trips for special occasions. Theres a Last Fling Before the Ring trip. An American Girl Doll Adventure for mothers and daughters. Even a Botox and the Bus excursion. As Tracys Trips has taken

off, McAllister now plans to expand her schedule and pos-sibly add more cities. But none will replace the city she loves. Realize it or not, like Marlo Thomas, McAllisters made it in Manhattan. If only for a couple of days at a time.

SHE TOOK WHAT SHE WASDEALT AND MADE SOMETHING GOOD OF IT.

    THATS A HERO.

  • When Mindy Atwood organized a fundraiser 10

years ago to help families with sick children, she never dreamed she would find a calling.

Atwood and her husband, Rodney, knew firsthand how devastating a childs illness could be, so they wanted to reach out to other parents. But when she realized how many families needed help, the Hill-iard resident knew she wanted to do more.

Today, Atwood, 52, serves as chief executive officer of Patches of Light, a non-profit organization dedi-cated to helping the parents of critically and terminally ill children. The Hilliard-based organization provides financial assistance to families who are struggling to make ends meet while caring for their kids. The agency pays household or medical expenses for families referred to it by hospital social workers.

Atwood, a media assistant at Hilliard Station Sixth Grade School, runs the organization without pay.

Patches has saved patients from homelessness, said Faye Bullio, a Nationwide Chil-drens Hospital social worker and Patches of Light board

member. Mindy has been tirelessly devoted to this effort. She is the spark.

Atwood understands how quickly medical bills and other expenses accumulate. Her son Jason is a cancer survivor and her other son, Michael, had open-heart surgery as a child. People assume if you have insurance youre going to be OK, she said. The reality, though, is that debt mounts from missed work and uncov-ered expenses.

Its just amazing what fami-lies are going through, she said. In the beginning, I was crying all the time.

The agency raises about $40,000 a year through vari-ous fundraisers, including a walk-a-thon, a volleyball tour-nament, a penny drive and a Ducky Derby.

Amy Browning, whose son has leukemia, said Patches of Light has given her Hilliard family breathing room. She greatly admires Atwoods dedi-cation to the cause. Theres no anger, no regret. She took what she was dealt and made something good of it, Brown-ing said. Thats a hero.

But even a heroine has her limits.

We do just about any-thing, Atwood saidwith per-haps one exception. I always say we dont do windows.

ANYONE LEFT WITH MANNERS?Hello?AS MOBILE PHONE USE INCREASES, SO DOES

    THE RUDE BEHAVIOR

    THAT COMES WITH IT

    SORRY,

    JIM, BUT ITS OVER

  • Denise Pietzsch was in a public bathroom recently when she heard the

woman in the next stall on the phone, breaking up with her boyfriend. I should not be hearing this, Pietzsch thought to herself. You should not be doing this. Are you going to flush?

The rise in cell phone use has made such encounters increasingly common. In the rush to answer calls, texts or

e-mails, many mobile phone users seem to forget where they are, who theyre with or what theyre doing. With mobiles to their lips, they yell at spouses in grocery stores, question coworkers while checking in at the doctors and chat up friends during movies.

Were just getting ruder and ruder all the time, said Pietzsch, executive director of Etiquette & Protocol Image Consultants in Worthington.

Pietzsch, who politely scolded the woman in the

bathroom, encourages people to take others to task for rude behavior. Its perfectly accept-able to ask people to take their cell phone conversations out of the room, turn off their phones during a meeting or meal or refrain from answering texts during a conversation, she said. The key is approach-ing them in a polite, calm manner, she added.

I dont think it should be ignored, she said. Were let-ting people get away with bad behavior.

Part of the problem is that people feel as though a cell phone gives them some sort of anonymity to speak of personal situations or other private matters, added Nancy Flynn, executive director of The ePolicy Institute, a train-ing and consulting firm in Columbus.

People will say things in public on a cell phone that they would never say if that person was standing right there, she said. There is a real disconnect.
