Most of us think that we are just a small fish in a big pond when it comes to doing our part to save the environment, but the truth is all efforts add up. Still, you may wonder, how really hard is it to make your life greener? The person to answer that question is Jennifer Armentrout. Jennifer and her family have been living green for years. Contrary to a lot of misguided beliefs, going green is not giving up luxuries. Living green is learning that many of the products we use or thing that we do aren’t necessary for a good life. Jennifer does compose and grow a garden but in her freezer are also pizza’s for the kids. Jennifer is one of those rare people who have learned how to help the environment by changing her routines, yet balances it with raising three kids in our throw-away world. “I don’t drive an electric car,” she told me. “ I have to have my SUV to tote kids to sports, and run the thousands of errant’s that every mother has to make”. Jennifer’s desire to make her family’s life more eco-friendly started years ago. “ I guess I started seeing things differently when I was a kid,” she reminisced. “ I remember looking out the car window and asking my mother why there was so much trash on the road. Even when I was little it didn’t seem right to have trash everywhere. But it wasn’t until high school and took a environmental science class that the green bug really hit me.” When Jennifer’s daughter was born medical problems drove Jennifer to conduct research, on her own, into the foods and products we all use around the home. “One day I just dumped all of my old products, she explained. “I started making my own soap and toothpaste and using organic instead of processed foods. My daughter became well. I can’t prove it was the changes I made, but she hasn’t had any problems since.” Jennifer gave us a quick example of something that is natural, inexpensive and great to keep your yard green during our long hot summer months. “I just empty a box of Epsom Salts into our lawn spreader and go over the yard like you would with fertilizer. The salts help keep the water in the soil and your yard green.”If you could sum up what Jennifer has learned and what she can teach us about being environmentally responsible is this: Don’t purposely waste anything. It takes some work and creativity, but the outcome is a gift that will last generations.

Table Salt

Use It to Clean Your…Artificial flowers: Place the fake blooms inside a paper bag and pour in salt. Close the bag and shake vigorously. The salt will dislodge accumulated dust and dirt. Glassware: Salt won’t scratch the way a scouring pad can. To get out stubborn stains, add some salt for extra abrasion and scrub. Greasy pots and pans: Sprinkle salt on cookware to absorb excess grease. Dump out the salt before washing as usual. (Not recommended for nonstick cookware.) Spills in the oven: If that casserole bubbles over as you take it out of the oven, pour salt on the spill to soak it up. When the oven is cool, wipe with a damp sponge. Stained teacups and coffee mugs: Sprinkle salt on the outside of a lemon peel; rub the affected area till clean.

Wooden counters and tables: Cover grease splatters with salt to absorb as much as possible. Wait an hour, then brush away the salt.

Salt’s granular texture makes it perfectly suited for scouring. Table salt, sea salt, and kosher salt can all be used, but table salt is the cheapest choice.

Price: About 69 cents a pound.

Children and art make for a great combination. Their budding creativity and uninhibited sense of self gives kids a strong foundation for developing artistic abilities. Whether your child is a potential Picasso or just an enthusiastic scribbler, fostering a sense of confidence in their artistic expression can help build their self esteem.

Research shows that art classes can lay the groundwork for future career or academic success. Creative children have a more well-rounded view of the world, they are not afraid to be expressive, and their self-esteem is strengthened through their artistic endeavors.

Art does not need high levels of talent or natural ability to be enjoyable. Choose art classes for your kids to encourage their growth. Whether it turns into a lifelong passion or an idle interest, they’re sure to have fun while learning.

Coles Crossing girls love art classes at The Artists Within.

In the sweltering summer heat of Cypress, Vonnie’s Snow Cone’s are the one cool spot in town. Every summer kids, adults and even a few dogs line up to get their first taste of summer - a chilly shaved ice cup, covered in mixtures of exotic syrups. “ I started the business for my daughter,” Vonnie said. “ She was thirteen at the time and couldn’t get a job and had nothing to do for summer. There are so many kids who are young teens that end up spending the summer sitting around playing video games. They all need a little place to work at.” Her son found the trailer on Craig’s list and with the help of her husband, the trailer was fitted with new walls and windows. The small strip center on Telge, near

the entrance to Enchanted Valley allowed her to rent a space to park the trailer. With a shaved ice machine and an assortment of syrups, Vonnie was ready to open. What started as a way to keep her daughter busy, turned into a love for the community. “I really got to know by customer and before I knew it, the stand became the community itself.” This year the snow cone stand will move location. The strip center has decided not to renew the lease on her space, but that doesn’t mean that Vonnie won’t be in business. You can find her stand at her new location: “The Love Shack” on Cypress Rosehill. To find out more about her new Grand Opening this summer, and all the great flavors for your summer cone, visit Vonnie on her facebook page - I Love Vonnie’s Snow Cones in Cypress TX.

16 CC-Style Magazine | May - June 2011

Lots of people love to garden, and love the idea of having fresh herbs at hand. However, not everyone has the space for gardening. If you live in an apartment, you’re planning on moving, or if your work schedule prevents you from putting a lot of time into your garden, then you might want to consider planting a container herb garden. Container gardens have the advantage of being small and portable, but still allow you to keep fresh herbs at your fingertips.

GardensHerb

Container

How to plant * Decide on how many plants you want to grow and then choose a container that’s wide and deep enough to accommodate them comfortably. * Cover the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and then add a layer of compost. * Arrange your plants in the container and fill in the gaps with compost and firm around plants. * Water well. * After planting, put the pot in a sunny spot, near the kitchen door or an outdoor kitchen area so you always have them close to hand.

Aftercare * Place the pot in full sun and water regularly, especially during the summer. * Add a liquid feed to your watering can once a week to give plants a boost during the growing season.

By autumn, annual herbs such as basil and coriander will run out of steam and can be discarded, but it’s a good time to plant new woody herbs such as rosemary. Perennial herbs such as mint, thyme, oregano or chives will die back, but will regrow in the spring. Five herbs to try * Thyme ‘Silver Poesie’ - tastes as good as ordinary thyme but has pretty silver bordered leaves * Curry plant - silver grey leaves and yellow flowers, smells strongly of curry * Curled leaf parsley - If you want a stronger flavour, try the flat leaved variety * Mint - it’s best in pots so it doesn’t overrun your whole garden * Basil - try growing together with tomatoes for a summer dish in a pot

Although most plants in the landscape and home are not poisonous, there are some plants that may cause problems with adults, children and pets. Poisonous plants typically cause some type of adverse reaction when people are exposed to it. Some plants cause external allergic reactions and other plants can cause internal poisoning when ingested.

There are varying degrees of reactivity to poisonous plants. Some people may react to poison ivy, while others do not. It can become even more complicated because the growing season and the level of maturity may also affect the level of toxicity in a plant. The age, size and health of the person or pet exposed also influences toxicity.

The bottom line when dealing with a poisonous plant is to contact a poison control center or physician if you have any doubts about a plant you, your children or pets are exposed to. It will help to educate yourself regarding poisonous plants to reduce the risk of exposure.

Avoid landscape plants that are poisonous if you have children or pets, and teach children about plants that may be poisonous. It is also a good idea to know the plants in the landscape and home that may be toxic. Whenever possible, find out the botanical name as well as the common name.

Mushrooms that grow in the yard should be considered poisonous. You cannot always safely dispose of poisonous plants by burning or composting. For example, poison ivy might become part of the smoke and be inhaled.

One part of the plant may be safe while others may not. Being able to handle something toxic without a reaction does not mean it can be safely ingested. The amount of exposure can also determine if a plant is poisonous.

A few common plants with poisonous properties include, but are not limited to, Moonflower, Bleeding Heart, Castor Beans, Foxglove, Lantana, Morning Glory, Poison Ivy, Elderberry, Milkweed, Mushrooms, Nightshade, Sumac, Rhododendron, Azaleas, Yew, Wisteria, Clematis, Dieffenbachia, Ivy, Oleander, Cyclamen, Mistletoe, Philodendron, Iris, Caladiums, Daffodils, Hyacinths, Elephant Ears, and Sago Palms.

For more in formation or in case of emergency, contact a poison control center or physician.

Local Group is Helping People with Cancer

Families who receive a diagnosis of leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma face serious medical, emotional, and financial challenges. When care is unavailable locally, or local treatment has failed, many choose the MD Anderson Cancer Center and other hospitals in the Texas Medical Center. Short term housing is very expensive and families are often faced with the difficult decision of going into debt to pay for housing or declining potentially life-saving care.

One local foundation has stepped up to help by providing fully furnished apartments to blood cancer patients for only $20 per day while they are in Houston for treatment. Every guest is paired with a Halo House Ambassador who greets them and helps them to make Halo House their "home-away-from-home."

Founded in 2009 by an oncologist at MD Anderson, Halo House has provided nearly 250 days of housing to families already this year. The goal is to purchase a dedicated facility capable of housing 20 families in 2013. They will need lots of help to make the dream a reality. Go online to learn more about the Halo House Foundation, and make a donation to help provide housing to people with cancer. Let them know if your company matches charitable donations made by their employees to double your gift, or if your company has a program to provide support for local charities.

Directions

Drinking ice tea for our long hot summers is an unwritten law in Texas. So to keep you legal, here are some cool variations on this southern summer necessity.

Ice Tea Punch

Ingredients 6 small or 2 family size tea bags 4 cups boiling water 1 cup sugar 1 6 oz. can lemonade, undiluted 1 6 oz can limeade, undiluted 10 cups water

Steep tea in 4 cups boiling water for 5 minutes. Add sugar, lemonade and limeade; stir until dissolved. Add remaining 10 cups of water and chill in refrigeratorMakes 1 gallon of tea. To keep ice from diluting the tea, use the tea mixture to make ice cubes. You can add a lemon slice or lime slice in each cube before freezing for a festive look.

Mango White Tea Smoothie

Ingredients 1.5 Cups Low Fat Vanilla Frozen Yogurt 1/2 Cup 100% Mango Juice 1/2 Cup Strong, Freshly-Brewed White Tea – Chilled

Directions

Add all ingredients into an electric blender. Cover the blender, and blend until everything is smooth. Serve in a short, wide glass and garnish with a fresh slice of mango

Transfer tea to a large container or pitcher. Refrigerate until chilled. Serve over ice. Yield: 16 servings (4 quarts).

They say getting there is half the fun, but getting ready for when you get there is at least half the irritation. Nobody likes to pack, and most can’t figure out the most pain-free way to get the deed done. Here are some tips to get you packing.

Make a list! The best approach is to write down what you are going to be doing each day of your trip. Then coordinate outfits including underwear, socks, belts for each activity, each day.

Spread out everything you’ll need for the trip on a bed, then carefully put back at least half of the clothes you’ve assembled. Less is usually enough

Pick two colors and stay with those, that way you can mix and match. Try to take something you wear at least twice. Dark colors and patterns show less dirt and wrinkles

Go light on items that take up space and add weight, like hair dryers, etc. Most hotels have these in the rooms or available from the front desk.

Take more shirts than pants. If you wear tan or gray pants today, few people will know if you wear the same ones tomorrow or the next day. Change shirts instead

Travel.................... The word “travel” comes to us from the French word “travailler” meaning “to work hard.” No wonder there’s so much labor involved getting ready for a vacation.
