We’ve all heard about theimportance of winterizing yourcar. But when should you do so— and how? October is National Fall Car

Care Month and offers the per-fect opportunity for you to makesure your vehicle is ready tohandle the snow, sleet andfreezing temperatures to come. The following should be

included in any “winterizing”package offered by your localrepair shop, but you can alsohandle many of them yourself.

Make a checklist to ensure youare covering all of your bases. • Battery: It is important to

test your battery and chargingsystem. A fully charged batteryin good condition means youwon’t be stuck with an enginethat won’t start in cold weather. • Drive belts: Inspect the

underside of your drive belts forsigns of wear. The AmericanAutomobile Association recom-mends replacing your beltsevery 60,000 miles. • Engine hoses: Check your

cooling system hoses for leaksor loose clamps. You can alsofeel and squeeze the hoses forbrittleness or sponginess. • Tire pressure: Test your tire

inflation pressure more fre-quently in fall and winterbecause falling temperaturesmean falling tire pressures. • Air filter: The AAA recom-

mends you check your car’sengine air filter by holding it upto a 60-watt light bulb. If lightcan be seen through much ofthe filter, it is still clean enoughto work effectively. If the lightis blocked, it is time to replaceit.• Lights: Properly working

lights are crucial during the falland winter months, whenevening sets in a little quicker.

Check the operation of allheadlights, taillights, brakelights, turn signals, emergencyflashers and back-up lights.Replace any burned-out bulbsby following the proceduresstated in the owner’s manual. • Wiper blades: Replace any

blade that leaves streaks ormisses spots. Winter wiperblades come wrapped with arubber boot to reduce ice andsnow buildup. Considerinstalling these if you live inareas with heavy snow duringthe winter.• Brakes: Have your brakes

checked and changed at thefirst indication of a problem, usually identified by a squeak-ing or grinding noise.

PREPARATION |

In a pinch, a properly inflatedspare tire can mean the differ-ence between getting homesafely and paying more than$100 for a tow. Maintaining the spare tire

can often be an afterthoughtuntil you need it the most.Luckily, with a simple check ofthe air pressure and accessibili-ty to the tire, drivers can be pre-pared to safely change a tire.

Tire PressureTire pressure drops one

pound per square inch (PSI) forevery 10-degree drop in tem-perature, according to theAmerican AutomobileAssociation. So check your tiresweekly. The proper inflation pressure

will generally be listed in yourvehicle’s owner manual and/or

noted on a sticker on the insideof the driver’s-side door. Youcan find a tire pressure gaugefor less than $20.

The Spare Tire Mechanism In most cars, the spare tire

can be found under the floor ofthe trunk in a reservoir that willalso include a wrench forremoving the lug nuts and ajack for lifting the vehicle. Buton SUVs or trucks, the spare tireis usually suspended on a cableunderneath the vehicle. The cable mechanism must

be maintained to ensure safe, proper usage when you need it.Lower and raise the tire to see ifthe cable is moving freely. Thelast thing you need is an inac-cessible spare tire when you’restuck on the side of the roadwith a flat.

If you have trouble moving the tire smoothly, spray the mecha-nism with a rust penetrant. If that doesn’t help or if the cableseizes to move, it is time to repair it.

Changing Your Tire Have you changed a tire before? Trying to do so for the first time

while battling winter elements – snow, sleet or cold hands – canbe a definite obstacle. Here are some basics to remember: • Find a safe spot to pull your vehicle over.• Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers of your situa-

tion. • Use your wrench to loosen the lug nuts.• Use the jack to lift the vehicle off the ground – just enough to

where the tire spins freely. • Remove the lug nuts, pull off the tire and place the spare on

the car.• Use the wrench to secure the lug nuts.• Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts as snug as possi-

ble.

| PREPARATION TRAVEL TIPS |

Every year, as tens of millionsof travelers take the road fortheir holiday trips and vacations,at least one million people willbe stranded. But many of themwould be able to avoid theseproblems if they started plan-ning in the fall. That figure is an estimation

by the American AutomobileAssociation, which is ready todeploy its assistance specialiststo help with lockouts, batteryreplacements, jump starts, extri-

cating vehicles from snow andtowing cars for repair. The AAA anticipates its

busiest time of year to bebetween December 19 andJanuary 2. And while beingstranded on roadway is proba-bly not on your wish list, it is anissue you or someone youknow may have to face this hol-iday season.

| TRAVEL TIPSside breakdowns by keepingtheir vehicles properly main-tained. The AAA advisesmotorists to follow their recom-mended maintenance scheduleand make sure their vehicle isready for the holiday travel sea-son.Have a certified technician

check your vehicle’s fluid levels, lights, brakes, exhaust systemand heater/defroster. youshould continue to scheduleregular services, including oiland filter changes, throughoutthe winter driving season at theintervals recommended by thevehicle manufacturer.

Common IssuesEvery year during the holiday

season, this is how AAA servicecalls are broken down: • Nearly 300,000 requests for

help with a dead battery.• More than 80,000 failed

batteries repaired on the spot.• Nearly 200,000 sets of keys

retrieved from inside lockedvehicles.• More than 166,000 tire

changes.• About 21,000 vehicle extri-

cations.

Handling Being Stranded The AAA projects its roadside

technicians can fix the issues ofmore than three out of fivestranded motorists and sendthem on their way. The remain-ing two travelers will still need atow. Keeping you and your family

safe while you’re stranded isimportant. This means pullingyour car fully onto the shoulderof the road and keeping yourhazard lights flashing. You could also benefit from

having an emergency kit full ofblankets, batteries, water, flash-lights and other essential itemsto keep you safe and warm dur-ing long delays.

| FLUIDS

You’re driving home fromwork in early November and itbegins to rain. The shorter day-

light period of the fall meansyour visibility is likely compro-mised. The falling temperatures

Wiper Fluid Checkand Change

mean the rain could quicklyturn to sleet. Do you know what is in your

windshield wiper reservoir? It isrecommended that you add asolvent suited for cold weatheras soon as summer ends. It may cost you a few dollars

more at your auto care center, but will be well worth thespending if you’re stuck in apotentially dangerous situation.Look for fluid that can stand upto freezing temperatures, snowand ice. The wintertime also means

your windshield will be hit bysand, gravel or rock salt spreadon the road by transportationcrews trying to keep them safe.Keeping your fluid tank full forthe winter months will help youachieve maximum visibility forall of these cold-season chal-lenges.

Changing Your Fluid The process of changing your

wiper fluid is an easy one. • Open your hood and locate

the reservoir, usually markedwith a windshield wiper icon onthe cap for convenience. • Check the outside of the

container – which should be

opaque – to see if your coolantis below the required-levellines. • If so, add the appropriate

quantity of properly diluted fluidinto the reservoir.

Checking Washer Pump Checking your wiper system

ahead of the winter freeze isimportant to ensure properworking order. If you’re experi-encing issues with the feature, you can troubleshoot the pumpby turning your key to the “on”position without starting theengine. Listen carefully when you try

to use the washer fluid. Do youhear a humming sound? Ifyou’re having a hard time hear-ing the pump and there some-one is nearby, ask them to listenclosely. If you don’t hear any sounds,

check the fuses. The owner’smanual will explain which fusebelongs to the windshieldwasher pump. If the fuses donot appear to be damaged orworn, this is a sign that you mayneed to have the motorreplaced.

| WINTER TRAVEL

Dashing through the snowon worn-out or ineffective tiresisn’t as merry as it sounds. When it comes to driving

through winter weather, yourtires are the ones that take thebrunt of the punishment. Butyou can arm your tires to makesure you reach your destinationsafely – even when the snowmakes it difficult to do so.

SnowMany car-makers and repair

technicians recommend mount-

ing snow tires to your vehiclebefore the winter driving sea-son. These specially designedtires are made to help you trekthrough the snow – even inareas of heavy accumulation. If you choose to go down this

route, be sure to splurge on allfour tires. Your alignment canbe thrown off if you drive ontwo standard and two snowtires, and that can cause biggerproblems for your vehicle downthe road. And keep your standard tires

All About SnowTires

handy. Once the winter lets up,you’ll be happy to get themback on your vehicle to improveyour fuel efficiency and overallhandling.

All-Season TiresAnother option is all-season

tires that you drive year-round –winter and summer. This willhelp you avoid having toremember to change your tiresbefore the winter weather orneeding to store two sets ofrims. While all-season tires are

more effective than a standardtire, you won’t get the fulladvantage of having specializedsnow tires on your vehicle. These tires are designed specifi-cally to help drivers blastthrough snow and are tested

vigorously for this purpose.

Tire Type and TreadSnow tires are the recom-

mended options in areas withheavy winter weather. But youmay still decide to stick withyour regular tires for price orconvenience purposes. If youdo, be sure to check the treaddepth of your tires. Replace anytire that has less than 3/32inches of tread, the AmericanAutomobile Association stated. Check multiple spots on the

tire when assessing your treaddepth. Uneven tire wear canindicate alignment issues, out-of-whack wheel balance or sus-pension problems that must beaddressed to prevent further tiredamage.
