2017 is upon us and it is a wonderful time to look over policies and procedures and update them as needed.  A few items to pay particular attention to is your emergency and disaster policies and procedures. As our agency taught the Foundations for Success class this year it was evident that for many providers this is something that is created and then not really thought about again.  This document is intended to keep the children, you and your staff safe in the event of an emergency.  Here are a few things to keep in mind when reevaluating your emergency and disaster plan:

•  Are your evacuation procedures still adequate; take into account all the children in your care including, infants, toddlers and children with special needs?

•  Does your infant room staff have what they need to evacuate the children in a timely manner?

•  Are all staff aware of their assigned tasks during emergencies? •  Are parents fully aware of your emergency procedures?

There are a few additional things you should always keep in focus; if you have a disaster that prevents parents from getting to and picking up their children, how will you continue care for each and every child.  Are you prepared to do so?  Do you have 72‐hour kits to help meet the needs of the children during that period?  Have you trained your staff on how to respond to children’s physical and emotional needs during and after a disaster?  Have you taught older children what to do during an emergency? The Care About Childcare website now has the ability to allow

emergency responders to send out emails or texts to programs in a certain vicinity of emergencies, if needed.  Please make sure cell phone numbers for you and your staff are current as well as their email addresses.  This will be a great addition to allow programs close to situations to know how they need to respond.

You must pre-register. You will not be considered registered in our classes until we receive the registration form and your payment. We require that you pre-register for our classes for a couple of reasons: 1- Due to the amount of materials we distribute in class, we need to have an accurate count of how many providers will be attending each one and enough time to prepare them. 2- Weber State University has set strict guidelines for us to follow when handling money. They will not allow any money to remain in the office unsecured, overnight. We also do not want to put your information at risk by having it sit on a desk overnight. It is for your privacy and safety that we request you send in your money. Registration forms must be sent through the mail. Money can not be accepted at the training. Each registration form will let you know where to send it. Please check the training schedule page on our website (weber.edu/cac) to see if a class is full or has been rescheduled or cancelled. All training participants must review and sign the Statewide Professional Development System Code of Conduct each time you register. If there is no signature, your registration form will be sent back for you to sign. We will not be able to hold your spot in any class and you may miss out on the class that you want to register for. We are not able to register anyone for a class without the signed copy of the Code of Conduct. The registration form has the information we need for the Utah State Training Registry and must be filled out in full. An incomplete registration form will delay your registration and you may miss the class you are trying to register if it fills before we can collect the information we need. If you have any questions about the information we collect, you can contact our office at 801-626-7784. If you are sending registrations for more than one person, you must include a registration form for each person and each person must sign the Training Participant Code of Conduct. The form has the information we need for the Utah State Training Registry, without it we cannot register you for any of our classes. Also, each person must sign a copy of the Utah State Professional Development System Code of Conduct. Without that signature, no one will be able to attend classes. Registration for each class will close 7 days prior to the start of class. No registrations will be accepted within a week of the class' start date. This will give us time to prepare the right amount of materials. We register for classes one quarter at a time. You may register only for the classes listed in our current newsletter. Each quarter's class schedule and registration form can be found in our quarterly newsletter, the Child Care Connector. The newsletter is published every September, December, March and June. The schedule and registration form will also be posted on our website shortly after it has been sent in the mail. Sorry, we are not able to issue a refund. If we receive money from you for a class that is already full, we can give you the option of sending the check back to you or sending you a credit voucher. When a class is full, it will be posted on the training schedule page on our website at weber.edu/cac. You can always call our office at 801-626-7837 to check if the class is full before sending in the registration form or check our online schedule. If you are unable to attend a class and you call at least three days before the first session starts, we can send you a credit voucher. Sorry, we are not able to refund money. Please be sure to call during office hours 8am-4:00pm. You can reach us either at 801-626-7837, 801-626-7784, or toll free at 1-888-970-0101. We cannot issue a credit voucher if you fail to notify us before the first session of a class. Each 10 hour class is broken down into four sessions. If you miss one or two session(s) in a class, no money can be refunded. However, you can make it up when that session is taught again, without repaying. You also have the option of making-up the session you missed with another CAC agency without having to pay again. We have an agreement with our sister agencies that allows you to make up one or two sessions with them. Just contact them for their times and registration policies. To register for a make-up session with us, simply fill out the registration form and circle the dates you need to make up, write "make-up" in the amount enclosed section and send it in. Be sure to include the signed Code of Conduct with the form. We have a limited number of make-up slots available for each night so please let us know if you are registered for a make-up session and are unable to attend.

We will also leave a message on our main phone line 801-626-7837. All classes canceled due to weather will be rescheduled. Certificates are given to participants on the last day of class. If you are making up a session, let the trainer know, they can get the certificate to you sooner. If you do not receive a certificate within two weeks of the final session, contact our office at 801-626-8083. There will be a $5 charge for a replacement certificate.

Information on Speaking What is it?

Children begin to communicate from the time they are born. They cry when they are hungry, tired, or need to be changed. Through interactions with family members, they hear the language spoken in their home and begin to understand that words have meaning. Learning to speak involves listening, comprehension, attention, memory, word knowledge, and grammar.

Observe and Respond Children as young as three years old may have a speaking vocabulary of about one thousand words when

people talk, sing, and read to them. You can help increase your child’s vocabulary by introducing your child to new experiences. Talk about your experiences. When you are together, describe what you are doing by saying, “I’m going to stir this gravy until all the lumps are gone.” Or describe what your child is doing. You can also sing songs and say nursery rhymes. Ask questions that call for more than one-word responses. Instead of asking, “Did you like the movie?” ask, “What was your favorite part of the movie?” Ask all the “wh” questions: who, what, where when, and why. Encourage your child to use descriptive words like angry, frustrated, and upset to describe feelings.

Expand your child’s single words into short phrases or sentences during pretend play. If your child is pretending to order at a restaurant and says, “Pizza,” repeat the word but add to it. Say, “Yes, I would like a small thin-crust pizza with sausage and mushrooms, please.”

Find ways to include your child in household chores and routines. Use these chances to talk as well as to accomplish some of what you need to get done. You can build vocabulary through everyday activities like cooking together: When you cook you can say: stir, whisk, mix, measure, spread, and taste. Play guessing games while you work. Ask your child to describe something to you. Try to guess what it is. Stop what you are doing when your child initiates a conversation with you. Get down to eye level, paraphrase what your child has said and then ask, “What happened next?” or “What did you do?”

Help your child build lengthy sentences by taking pictures of things you do together. When you look at them together, ask your child what was taking place. Solicit more detail by asking, “What else was going on?” involve your child in storytelling. Start a story and then stop. You can say, “Once upon a time there was a purple and orange monster who…” Let your child finish the sentence.

It takes time for children to perfect the sounds of the English language. Some of the more challenging sounds for children to produce include l, s, r, v, y, ch, sh, and th. Usually by the time children are four years old, their speech is understood by those who know them and by unfamiliar adults. If your child mispronounces words, it is not necessary to draw attention to the error. Instead, repeat the words using the correct pronunciation.

At times your child may pause, hesitate or repeat words. Stuttering usually first appears in children two to five years old. Listen attentively, be patient, and avoid asking your child to slow down. Give your child some time.

Connecting with Support

If a child demonstrates any of the following problems in their home language, it is important to seek assistance from their primary health care provider or screening through your school district:

Is not easily understood most of the time by three years of age. Is not using short (two- or three-word) sentences to communicate by three years of age. Is not understandable by unfamiliar adults by four years of age. Is not speaking sentences that sound almost adult like by four years of age.

Early recognition and intervention can help your child become better prepared for entering kindergarten ready to succeed.

The following article was taken from the book So this is Normal Too by Deborah Hewitt. This is the portion geared toward families. There is a longer section geared toward providers. If you want us to

send you a copy, you can either call 801-626-7837 or email [email protected].

Color Sorting Use two plates and several blocks of two different colors to give your child a chance to sort colors. Your child will begin to recognize and say color words and sort the blocks by color. Why this is important? Knowing color names will enable your child to express himself better. As he practices naming and sorting colors, his understanding and vocabulary will improve. Touching the colored block as he names the color will make it easier to remember the name. What you do

• Gather together a collection of blocks in two colors. Give him a plate of each color and invite him to sort them. Can you put the red blocks and on this plate and the blue blocks on that plate?

• Talk about his actions, I see you put a red block over here. Are you going to find another red block to put with it?

• Offer help if he does not understand the instructions. This is a red block. Which plate should we put this red block on? Help him sort a few blocks until he can do it on his own.

• Add another color to the game when he can successfully sort two colors.

Another Idea Look for other items around your house for your child to sort. When cleaning up toys, ask him to find all the green toys first, then the yellow, etc. Or, let him sort cans in the kitchen by matching up the colors. When folding laundry, your child can help by searching for socks with matching colors. Encourage him to name each color she finds.

Learning Games from The Creative Curriculum

Let’s Imagine Choose quiet times to ask your child questions that encourage her to use her imagination. This gives your child the opportunity to think creatively by freely choosing and combining ideas in interesting ways.

Why is this important? Playing this pretend game with your child encourages her to imagine something without any props. Imagining is a way of experiencing something without physical participation. This is a creative way of thinking. What you do

• Hold your child on your lap and rock her, or just be close to her as you do during other quiet times.

• Recall a character or situation from a story that you recently read together. • Ask questions that encourage your child to extend the story, for example, How

did the bear feel when he was on the ice flow? If you had been there, how would you have felt?

• Offer her an imaginary scenario for her to think about: If you were going to visit Red Fox, what would you pack in your bag? If you had an invitation to a dinosaur’s birthday, what present would you take?

• Use her experiences to guide your questions. Consider meaningful books, television shows, or recent events that could help her have ideas.

Ready to Move On? Write down her imaginative stories so that you can enjoy them together later.
