AERO DIMPLES – it’s impossible to maintain laminar

airflow over your moving leg, so we’ve engineered dimples

right into the fabric to induce flow separation and reduce

aerodynamic drag. And the structure is knit right into the

fabric, so there’s nothing to chafe or wear out. It all makes

you go faster.

GIRO3 INTEGRATED LEG GRIPPERS – instead of

stitching silicone elastic to the short, we knit the grip

material directly into the short in a 5cm-wide band that

gently compresses while securely holding the short in place.

And it lies completely flat for improved aerodynamics.

Makes you more comfortable and faster.

PROGETTO X2 AIR – we’ve added perforations to the

foam layer in our renowned Progetto X2 seat pad to help

keep you cooler and dryer. Air flows right into the surface

fabric to aid evaporation. Plus, the shape of the pad has

received minor updates based on pro feedback. It all makes

you more comfortable.

GIRO2 BIB STRAPS – a single strip of Giro2 fabric makes up

the bib straps. It’s very soft and stretchy and eliminates the

Lycra® trim that cuts into your shoulders on typical bib straps.

It’s part of the innovative bib system that minimizes material

to keep your torso cool. Makes you more comfortable.

ONE SINGLE PIECE OF FABRIC – Body Paint is made

from a single piece of fabric with all the components knit

into the fabric instead of being stitched together. This short

features anatomic fit, mesh zones for breathability, surface

structure for aerodynamics, compression and gripper

elastic, all knit into a single piece of fabric. Makes you

SO FAST WE PATENTED IT Skinsuits are obviously fast, but they aren’t practical for road racing for two reasons: they have no pockets and, perhaps more importantly, it’s tough to take a nature break in one. So we created a new and improved aero jersey with a full zip and new fabrics and then stitched it to a Body Paint bibshort. The jersey portion and short portion overlap on the front for full coverage, but leaving the front unstitched allows for nature breaks even from the bike. We tested that too. The 3 rear pockets are securely held in place in all conditions, including when fully loaded.

The main aero benefit comes through improved airflow around the torso by keeping the sides of the jersey in tension. We were also able to remove the bib straps, improving comfort and allowing even more cooling when fully unzipped. Congratulations to Johan Van Summeren for netting the Sanremo Speedsuit’s first victory on the roads to Roubaix.

TRIATHLETES REJOICEWe always said we wouldn’t enter the Tri market until we had technologically superior product to offer triathletes. We’re finally ready. For Italy’s greatest race, the Giro d’Italia, there is only one mountain range that can truly live up to the legend of the race - the Dolomiti. While Tuscany, the Veneto, and cycling hotbeds around the world might foster the growth of the next generation of champions, it’s in the Dolomiti that those talents become legends.

The Giro’s history has been written on the slopes of the climbs that wind their way up the mountainsides below the giant rock walls of the Dolomites. After several years of avoiding the great climbs of the Dolomites, the Giro returned with a vengeance in 2011 with what might have been the most difficult day of racing in the last decade. Stage 15’s humbling journey from the Veneto plain to Gardeccia took riders over five major climbs, including two of the Dolomiti’s best, the Giau and Fedaia. In a stage that took the stage winner, Mikel Nieve, almost seven and a half hours to complete, riders tackled the mind-boggling sum of 6,500 vertical meters in 230 kilometers.

The words of Garmin-Cervelo’s two general classification hopes for the Giro, Christophe Le Mevel and Peter Stetina, were nearly identical following the stage: they both described it as the hardest thing they’ve ever done on a bike.

At one point, in the canyon of the Sottogudda on the early slopes of the Fedaia, Peter described the feeling as surreal - he was alone with a few other riders without an official moto, without fans, just his effort, a mountain creek, and rock walls a hundred meters high on each side of him.

The duo of Le Mevel and Stetina made for a successful pairing in their first Grand Tour together. The 30 year old native of Bretagne, who now calls Lugano home, Le Mevel, finished an excellent 15th overall following a sterling first week of the Giro, where he managed to finish in the top ten six times.

For 23 year old American, Peter Stetina, it was his first Grand Tour. The Colorado native went into the three week lap of Italy as a rider considered to possess immense potential for the three week Grand Tours, but as a rider who had never even done one, the verdict was still out. At the end of May, with a 22nd place finish overall, it was clear - the sky is the limit for the two-time U23 National TT Champion. The only question now is not if, but when.

TESTING MAKES PERFECTThe July 2011 issue of Cycling Plus magazine had a head-to-head test of top shorts from 18 different manufacturers, and the Free Aero Race Bibshort was named absolute best. As in racing, results like that come from years of hard work and preparation. This short debuted in 2007 but benefits from years of constant refinement, including 4 years of ProTour testing, as we try new ways to make it better. THIS IS WHY WE RACE This jersey is textbook product innovation at Castelli: it started with a focus group with Cervélo TestTeam riders in August 2009 focusing on improving clothing for cold and wet conditions. CTT rider Gabriel Rasch came up with the idea of a stretch short sleeve rain jersey to be used with our Nanoflex water resistant arm warmers. Great idea, but existing fabrics were either not stretchy enough, or not breathable enough. So we worked with Gore and developed the new 4-way stretch Windstopper® X-Lite Plus waterproof fabric. We made jerseys for the Cervélo TestTeam in March 2010 while Gore readied the fabric for commercialization. CTT helped us perfect the details on what Roger Hammond calls the best bit of kit he’s ever worn. Now available for your next cold and wet race. Our Nano Flex water-repellent fabric is one of those fabrics that seems miraculous. On a dry day it’s as warm and breathable as our normal Thermoflex fabric, but when it rains the water just runs off, thanks to the five-phase nanotechnology treatment. While it’s not 100% waterproof, it’s the best solution we’ve ever tried for staying comfortable in any conditions.

On a wet day, pair the Claudio bibshorts with a set of our fleecy and water-repellent Nano Flex knee or leg warmers and you’ll feel the same warmth as with a pair of tights.

On a weekend bereft of sunlight at the end of May, five riders from the Garmin-Cervelo women’s team descended on the northwestern Italian town of Tirano. Located in the beautiful Valtelline valley, the town sits at an important point for any woman who has dreams of glory in the most prestigious women’s stage of the year, the Giro Donne.

The Giro Donne stands alone as the sole ‘Grand Tour’ on the calendar, and in a race that spans the first ten days of July, the showdown for overall honors will flu on two arduous days on the mountainsides around Tirano. The first of the two will see the women take on the infamous Mortirolo before a task nearly as daunting - descending the extremely technical, steep side to the finish in Grosotto. The day after, there will be no descent - just a climb into the clouds framed by two ancient stone towers and seventeen switchback high above Bormio, the Torri di Fraele.

It was with these two crucial days in mind that five women: World Time Trial, British Road, and British Time Trial champion Emma Pooley, Noemi Cantele, Sharon Laws, Carla Ryan, and Jessie Daams came to Tirano.

The first day began under bright and sunny skies, but soon after, as the pace and the elevation notched ever higher, the blue skies turned dark, and rain began to fall. As the riders pushed toward the summit of the Mortirolo, day became night as rivers of water descended the mountain against the riders’ firm march upward.

It was an unforgettable sight. We often read about the toughness and dedication of professional cyclists. We even see it in movies every now and again, but rarely do you get the chance to see the world’s best plying their trade in conditions that would keep even the heartiest indoors, waiting for the next day.

There was a job to be done - rain, sun, cold, or heat, the training must go on, the work must be completed, and another check mark must be etched into the long line of boxed that need checking ahead of the most important race of the season.

CASTELLI FITTING

A Castelli cycling jersey has two functions: cooling your body and making you as aerodynamic as possible. These two critical functions cannot be accomplished unless your jersey fits optimally.

1 On your bike, the Castelli jersey fits close to the skin. While riding, you don’t feel or hear any flapping fabric, and due to the moisture wicking properties of the materials, you feel cooler and drier.

2 Off the bike, your Castelli jersey might feel tight across the chest and a little short in front. That is because the jersey is designed to fit the rider in the riding position - a jersey that fits shorter and tighter while standing, becomes a perfectly fitting piece of clothing when you get on your bike and lean over to your bars.

3 Our fabrics are specifically engineered to wick moisture away from your skin. Our Prosecco treatment helps spread moisture more quickly and evenly where it can evaporate to cool your body, keeping your core body temperature lower and thus performing better.

4 The other important aspect of a close-fitting jersey is the aerodynamic advantage it provides. We have designed our jerseys with the sleeves articulated forward into the natural riding position to provide maximum body contact and comfort with minimum binding, wrinkles, and excess fabric in both the back and the front of the jersey.

A bibshort is just as important as the jersey in providing performance enhancing features such as aerodynamics and muscle support, as well as protecting your bottom from hours spent in the saddle.

5 Bibshorts should fit tightly enough to support critical leg muscles through compression without inhibiting movement and constricting blood flow. Using a combination of fabrics allows us to fine tune each material’s characteristics to optimize fit and performance.
