Women Environmental Management and Sustainable Development. Modular Training Package
INSTRAW/SER.B/48, ISBN-92-1-1270006-5. Sales No. E.95.ill.C.2. (E)T
This publication is the first product of a major
research project which examines the existing
economic accounts and statistics. While the
need to measure and value unpaid work was first
identified nearly two decades ago at the First
International Women's Conference, the ~esearch
presented in this book concludes that
housework, child care, elderly care, and other
non-market activities are not yet valued in economic development. It describes some tools
for measuring and valuing unpaid contributions
to social and economic development and aims
at facilitating unbiased measurement of
women's contribution to productive activity.
This training package was prepared by
INSTRAW, in collaboration with the
International Training Centre of ILO, Turin. It
was prepared in response and as a follow-up to
the United Nations Conference on Environment
and Development (UNCED). The package aims
to contribute to an integrated approach in the
organization and management of environmental
policies and programmes through the integration
of women's needs as well as their participation
in planning, management, implementation and evaluation of environmental programmes and
projects. It consists of an Introduction and four
Modules (in bound volumes), plus trans
parencies and video cassettes and a trainer's
guide.

Targeting media people, the handbook .aims at
contributing to a more gender-sensitive media,
by presenting arguments and issues concerning
the power of the media and the representation
of women in it . It provides a checklist designed
to help people working in media programming
and decision-making be more aware of the
gender bias in the use of language and images. It also provides recommendations on how to
promote women's participation in the media .
Based on how development planners and policy
makers commonly understand and mis
understand the concept of gender, the booklet
explains the evolution of the concept and how
it has been addressed in development
strategies. It is intended to help development
planners and policy makers understand the
concept of gender and introduce a gender
perspective in the ir work. It aims at closing the
gap between gender concepts and at applying
these concerns in policies, programmes and
day-to-day work.
This monograph presents a global overview of
major credit programmes that have provided

a discussion of the importance of credit to

This book reviews the various perspectives in thinking about women, environment and
development and attempts to clarify the political and theoretical issues that are at stake in the debate on this topic. The authors proposed their own ideas as to the basic elements they consider necessary in constructing a paradigmatic shift in thinking about these
issues. Values such as holism, mutuality, justice, autonomy, self-reliance and peace are
presented as some of the basic elements.
Contains the research findings of the first phase of a project "Development of Communication Materials on Women and Development" carried out by INSTRAW in 1991 with funds provided
by the Italian Government. The report presents
a national profile of the situation of women in
mass and alternative media. It focuses on the
portrayal of women in the media, the content of programming aimed at women in the mass and alternative media, media ratings by women and men, the employment situation of women in the
media and women in professional training in
media and communications.
This publication brings together studies on the
time use of women conducted in various countries in Europe and North America by several well-known researchers.

This publication gives a statistical overview of women's and men's situation in society today.
The statistics cover several fields: population and households, health, paid and unpaid work, income, education, crime and decision-making.
This report provides summaries of the technical sessions held to discuss the six modules of INSTRAW's "Women, Water Supply, Waste Management and Sanitation" package, as well
as an evaluation of the effectiveness and usefulness of the training modules. It was the
first training seminar organized in the newly independent country on the subject matter.
