CEHD Insider - December 2016 College, Student, Alumni News, and Special Events CEHD News SPAD Hosts Visit for CHS Students The CEHD Sport Administration (SPAD) program invited students from Central High School (CHS) to visit and tour the Belknap Campus and Papa John's Cardinal Stadium to learn more about facility management and sport marketing. Students in the CHS Sport Marketing Magnet program will also have the opportunity to come to campus in spring 2017 to complete a dual-credit course in sport management and fan engagement. Gin Presley, Instructor in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences (HSS), and SPAD doctoral student Sarah Williams have coordinated events throughout the fall semester that engaged CHS students and raised awareness of the Central High School Sport Marketing Magnet program and the HSS partnership. In addition, Williams and fellow SPAD doctoral students Tyler Spencer, Sin-Wook Yoo, and James Weiner presented their research and shared their expertise with the CHS students. 2017 Grawemeyer Award Winners in Education This year's recipients of the Grawemeyer Award in Education are Diana Hess and Paula McAvoy. They were selected for their book, The Political Classroom: Evidence and Ethics in Democratic Education, which explores the roles of teachers in perpetuating serious, thoughtful political deliberation in schools. According to Hess and McAvoy, teachers should encourage conversations about difficult political issues because it will help students understand diverse points of view and become more politically engaged adults. CEHD Sponsors Pride Week Terri Rowland, Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development, reported that the CEHD and Diversity Committee worked together to show their support during UofL Pride Week and the Come Together Kentucky Conference. Both were sponsors for the Pride Week

event donating $250 each. Erica Camp, Administrative Associate in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences, and Dr. Rowland, Chair of the Diversity Committee, hosted a booth at the Pride Week Kick-Off event. Former National Football League player, Michael Sam, who is also know as the first open LGBTQ athlete to be drafted by the NFL, gave the Pride Week Keynote address. A group of CEHD students from the ELFH 414 Diveresity in the Workplace course attended Sam's lecture. The Come Together Kentucky (CTK) Conference was held on UofL's main campus this year and brought together students from Murray State University, Northern Kentucky University, the University of Kentucky, and UofL. The CEHD hosted an informational booth at the conference where Dean Ann Larson, Dr. Rowland, Jason Jaggers and Kathleen Carter, both Assistant Professors in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences, volunteered at the booth and represented the CEHD during the conference. The next CEHD Diversity Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 1 - 2 p.m., in room 322. Dean Ann Larson will attend the meeting, which is open to anyone who would like to join them. Topics on the agenda include the ongoing discussion of the CEHD Diversity Committee agenda as well as the committee's mission, purpose, and focus.

ELEOD News and UpdatesThe Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development (ELEOD) would like to share the following news about recent publications, presentations, and awards.

2016 Association for the Student of Higher Education (ASHE) Conference Amanda Bowers, doctoral student in the Educational Leadership and Organizational Development (ELOD) program, presented, "Exploring Impact in Campus-Community Partnerships: Community Partner Definitions, Perspectives, and Implementation Strategies," at the ASHE conference. Her paper was co-written by Meera Alagaraja, Associate Professor.

Jeffrey Sun, Department Chair and Professor, presented, "Institutional Obligations and Protections: Legal Knowledge Production about Campus Sexual Assaults," at the conference. He also serves on the Board of Directors for ASHE.

Awards and PresentationsDenise Cumberland, Assistant Professor, and Namok Choi,

Associate Professor, along with co-authors Sharon Kerrick, and Kathleen Gosser, published, "Women's Community Organizations: Exploring Attitudes Toward Collaboration Among Board Members," in the Community Development Journal.Dr. Cumberland was featured on Speaking Practically, a video podcast on which

she was interviewed about her research regarding employee voice. The podcast is an online training tool that focuses on leadership. In addition, Dr. Cumberland and her co- authors placed second for the Ruth Greenberg Award for Excellence in Medical Education Research for her poster presentation at the School of Medicine Research!Louisville Conference. The presentation featured the Parkinson's Disease Buddy Outreach Program. Dr. Cumberland also was a guest on the UofL Today with Mark Hebert Radio Show on Nov. 29th. She was interviewed about being selected as a 2016-17 UofL Top 4 Faculty Favorite.

Jeffrey Sun was a featured speaker at the Fraternal Law Conference, which was held in November. The conference is the leading legal educational event for fraternities, sororities, and their

related housing corporations and foundations. Dr. Sun is considered among the most knowledgeable leaders in the field concerning very critical topics facing the fraternal law community.

Meera Alagaraja and Carlos McCray, Associate Professors, participated in the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate conference that was held in October. The conference brings together a consortium of educators and administrators who are committed to improving doctorate education.

Dubuque Publishes ArticleErick Dubuque, Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education, and co-author Molly Dubuque, published, "Guidelines for the Establishment of a University-Based Practical Training System," in the October issue of Behavior Analysis in Practice. Dr. Dubuque also is the new President of the Kentucky Association for Behavior Analysis.

CFDC Program Featured on U.S. Army WebsiteIn October, the U.S. Army website featured an article about the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development's Cadre Faculty Development Course (CFDC) at Fort Knox. The article discusses details about curriculum and outcomes of the program. The fall 2016 issue of UofL Magazine also featured the program and other options the University offers for military service personnel.

Patton to Serve on UGECCScott Patton, Clinical Faculty in the Department of Special Education, will serve as the CEHD representative on the University General Education Curriculum Committee (UGECC). The committee oversees the implementation and ongoing development of the University-wide General Education Program.

Tretter A Featured Presenter at KSTATom Tretter, Professor in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education, was a featured presenter at the Kentucky Science Teachers Association (KSTA) conference, which was held in November. He gave the following presentations: "Science Assessment System - What Administrators Need to Know;" "Classroom Embedded

Assessments in Middle School;" "Urban Environmental Education;" "Classroom Embedded Assessments for Elementary;" and"Classroom Embedded Assessments for High School." He is also a member of the KSTA Board and represents the Jefferson County District.

Vidoni Presents at CRIFPECarla Vidoni, Associate Professor and Program Director in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences, presented a live streaming lecture for the Interuniversity Research Center on Education and Teaching Profession (CRIFPE) at the University of Montreal. CRIFPE is the only research center in Quebec and Canada that focuses exclusively on the study of

teaching and the teaching profession, and brings together over 500 researchers.

ELEOD PublicationsJason Immekus, Associate Professor, and co- authors published, "License to Let Go in Transitional Kindergarten Programs: Supports and Barriers of Play-based Strategies," in Curriculum and Teaching Dialogue.

Laura Parson, Clinical Assistant Professor, and co-authors published, "Exploring Educational Leadership in Rural Schools," in Planning and Organization. The article explores measures of school leader success in rural communities.

Kappa Delta Pi Hosts Induction CeremonyKappa Delta Pi held in November an induction ceremony for 23 new members to its organization. The society inducts only those individuals who have exhibited the ideals of scholarship, integrity or service, and commitment to excellence in teaching and its allied professionals. John Finch, Instructor in the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education and CEHD Liaison for Kappa Delta Pi, and Lateefah Id-Deen, Assistant Professor in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education, were presented a special award for their service and support of the organization.

MTRP Partners with Seneca High SchoolThe Minority Teacher Recruitment Project (MTRP) is partnering with Seneca High School for a very special mentoring program. Seniors in Seneca's Education Career Academy are paired with a MTRP/CEHD student to answer questions about the college experience, and help the Seneca students navigate

the application process. In October, the high school students visited Belknap campus where they attended class, had lunch with their MTRP mentors, and were given a tour of campus. It was a valuable and enriching experience for both the mentors and Seneca students, and it is MTRP's hope to continue the partnership for years to come.

King Appointed Associate Editor for AMCSKristi King, Associate Professor in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences, was recently appointed Associate Editor of Clinical Applications in the American College of Sports Medicine's (AMCS) Health and Fitness Journal. Dr. King also was invited by the UofL Writing Center to blog about

her writing process. Her article, "How I Write: Dr. Kristi King," was featured on the Center's website in November. Read more...

Flint and Overstreet To Appear on UofL Today ShowAmy Seely Flint, Chair of the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education, and Mikkaka Overstreet, Director of the Minority Teacher Recruitment Project (MTRP), will be guests on Mark Hebert's UofL Today Radio Show, Wednesday, Dec. 7th. Topics of discussion will include efforts to recruit and retain minority teachers in our schools.

Buecker Hosts CEHD Panel DiscussionHarrie Buecker, Liaison for District Partnerships in the Nystrand Center, hosted a panel discussion for Ohio Valley Education Cooperative (OVEC) administrators, superintendents, and teachers. The panel was titled, "CEHD Teaching and Learning Faculty - Educators Rising Overview," and the

panelists discussed what could be causing teachers to leave the profession and what degree or endorsement alternatives are available to expand teachers' career options. Panelists were Peggy Brooks, KTIP Coordinator; Jan Calvert, Instructor and Coordinator for the Alternative Certification program; Ginevra Courtade, Chair of the Department of Special Education (SPED); Robin Lipsey, Placement Coordinator for Middle and Secondary Education; Danna Morrison, Coordinator of Field Placement; and Mikkaka Overstreet, Director of the Minority Teacher Recruitment Project.

Student NewsJerome Morrison is the 2016 CEHD Outstanding Graduate for the December Commencement ceremony. He will graduate with a Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration this fall.

Sarah Roane, a doctoral student in the counseling psychology program, was selected by the Student Affiliates of Seventeen (SAS) and the Counseling Psychology Executive Board to serve a one-year term as the student representative for the Development Committee of Division Seventeen. Student NewsStephanie Winkeljohn Black was selected to receive the Guy Stevenson Award for Excellence in Graduate Studies. She will graduate with a Ph.D. in Counseling and Personnel Services with a specialization in Counseling Psychology this fall. The award is presented to a doctoral degree recipient who excels in scholarship, leadership, and other areas within his or her discipline. It is the highest award given by the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies. Black has accepted a position at Penn State University-Harrisburg and is a post-doc at Penn State's York Counseling Center.

Emily Zuccaro, a doctoral student in the Curriculum and Instruction program, was appointed to the Division G Campus Liaison for the American Education Research Association (AERA). Division G, one of the 12 AERA divisions available to graduate students, examines the educational processes of teaching and learning, languages and literacies, policy, politics, and community education within social contexts.

Erica Young, a graduate of the doctoral program in Educational Leadership and Organizational Development, will present at the 2017 AERA annual conference, Division G - Social Context of Education/Division G - Section 2: Studies of Diversity and Variation with Social Contexts of Education. She will present, "Fighting to be Seen: (Re) Visioning the Strengths of Persistently Disciplined Black Girls."

Marcia Carmichael-Murphy, a graduate of the Ed.D. program in Educational Leadership, will present at the 2017 AERA conference, Division L - Educational Policies and Politics - Section 7. Her paper is titled, "Stumbling in the Dark: Principal Sensemaking of PBIS Policy and Practice in Racially Diverse Schools."

Linda Pulley, a graduate of the CEHD's Master of Arts in Teaching program with a concentration in Music Education and teacher at Iroquois High School, was selected to receive the National Federation of State High School Associations Outstanding Music Educator Award.
