MISE Faculty Publish ArticlesDr. James Chisholm, Associate Professor in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education (MISE), and Andrea Olinger, Assistant Professor in the UofL College of Arts & Sciences' Department of English, published "'She's Definitely the Artist One': How Learner Identities Mediate Multimodal

Composing," in Research in the Teaching of English, the flagship research journal for the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Their article is a discourse analysis that explores the collaborative multimodal composing practices of three 12th grade students as they co-composed paintings in response to their literary readings.

Dr. Chisholm, along with Dr. Ashley Shelton Arnold, MISE Instructor, and Dr. Caroline Sheffield, Department Chair for MISE, published, "Mediating Emotive Em-pathy with Informational Text: Three Students' Think Aloud Protocols of Gettysburg: The Graphic Novel," in the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. Their article reveals how constructing inferences between

visual and linguistic sign systems mediated eighth-grade students' emotive empathy--a central, if limited component of historical thinking.

Dr. Arnold was recognized at the winter commencement ceremony with the Graduate Dean's Citation Award. The award is given by the School of Graduate and Interdisciplinary Studies in recognition of superior accomplishment in the student's graduate studies beyond the achievement of a high-grade point average.
