Chisholm Awarded NCTE GrantDr. James Chisholm, Associate Professor in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education, and Alison Heron-Hruby, Morehead State University, received a Conference on English Education research grant from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Their project examines how online platforms for

sharing drafts of writing inform teacher candidates' approaches to providing feedback to diverse high school writers. The study stems from research calling for more attention to pre-service preparation in the teaching of writing and from the potential of internet technology to help teacher candidates work with student populations outside their regional purview.

Hopkins Hosts IVLP Group

Dr. Katy Hopkins, Assistant Clinical Professor and Director of the Cardinal Success Program in the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology (ECPY), hosted at the Cardinal Success Program (CSP) at The Academy @ Shawnee a delegation of university counselors and psychologists from Bangladesh. The group was visiting through the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). They discussed methods and concepts being taught to future counselors in ECPY regarding youth violence prevention. The delegation learned about targeted prevention and intervention services, and CSP's mission to remove barriers to access quality mental health care for underserved communities.

CEHD Ft. Knox Program on Jeopardy!UofL was recently a "question" to an "answer" on the game show Jeopardy! in a category about ACC schools. The clue/answer was, "Some courses for the university of this city are taught at Fort Knox Army Base." And the question/answer was, "What is the University of Louisville?" The CEHD's Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development offers classes for active duty military personnel who may complete a degree in B.S. in Organizational Leadership and Learning or an M.A. in Higher Education Administration from anywhere in the world.

Staff Highlight: Mike Miller, Consultant, Kentucky Austism Training Center (KATC)Since 2007, UofL's LGBT Center has been a beacon to LGBT students seeking support and the resources they need to be successful in their lives. But its work extends beyond the Center to include training faculty and staff allies, providing scholarships, designing innovative study abroad and domestic immersion experiences, and offering the

region's first living/learning community in campus dorms that teaches students about LGBT identity. "We are a small team in the center, so we really depend on allies and friends to help us accomplish our mission," said LGBT Center Director, Brian Buford. "And nobody does more for our Center than Mike Miller!"Mike joined the Center's community

advisory team last year and committed to helping the Center grow. As a longtime community leader, he began introducing new faces to the LGBT Center and connecting them to its mission. In August, he co-hosted a party that raised over $13,000 for the Center and started the University's first LGBT-themed football tailgate. He's become a powerful spokesperson for LGBT youth, who face increased risk factors and often come to college without family support or exposure to an LGBT community. "Mike is the kind of friend and ally you dream about. He is so dedicated and passionate and I think people are inspired by that great energy when they are around him. At a recent reception, I asked some of the guests what brought them to the Center and most of them told me it was Mike. He was instrumental in making them aware of our resources and support," said Buford.

"The Vision Wall was a great success this year, and we hope to continue bringing this important project to UofL.
