CEHD Insider - March 2016 College, Student, Alumni News, and Special Events CEHD News Balkin Receives AHC Award Rick Balkin, Professor in the Department of Counseling and Human Development, was selected to receive the Humanistic Educator and Supervisor Award from the Association for Humanistic Counseling, which is a division of the American Counseling Association. The award is given to a member who has demonstrated humanistic philosophy in teaching/supervision, impacting the development of students and new professionals. LWP Receives New Grant The Louisville Writing Project (LWP) has been selected to receive a 2016-2017 Advanced Institute to Scale Up National Writing Project’s College-Ready Writers Program grant for $20,000. The purpose of the grant is to invest in 12-16 experienced middle and high school Writing Project teacher-leaders through an Advanced Institute that will take place during the summer of 2016 and continue through the 2017 school year for a minimum of 30 hours. MISE Wins Paul Weber Award The CEHD’s Department of Middle and Secondary Education was selected to receive the 2016 Paul Weber Award for their work over the past five years to develop a clinical model of teacher preparation, collaborate with UofL and school colleagues to improve K-16 student learning, and form partnerships that focus on equity and social justice. The group was presented the award at the annual UofL Celebration of Teaching and Learning, which was held in February. The award was created in memory of Dr. Paul Weber, a distinguished teacher, scholar, and mentor at UofL, and recognizes departmental excellence in teaching. CEHD Faculty Will Present at CCLD Share Fair Tammi Davis, Assistant Professor in the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education, and Tasha Laman, Associate Professor and Director of the Nystrand Center for Excellence in Education, will be presenters at the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development (CCLD) Share Fair, which is an opportunity for participants in the Kentucky Reading Project to showcase their work and research. Jean Wolph, Instructor and Director of the LWP, and Penny Howell, Associate Professor in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education, will attend the conference as Adult Literacy Project (ALP) Directors. The event will be held in April in Lexington, KY. Learn more... The award recognizes authors of an exemplary article that is published in JCLA. Dr. Woo’s article, “Professional Identity Scale in Counseling (PISC): Instrument Development and Validation,” was selected for the award by the JCLA Editorial Board. Students complete PhUN Week at HawthorneStudents at Hawthorne Elementary School, the only Spanish immersion program in the state, showed off certificates they received after completing PhUN Week at the school. The event was capped off with a science fair in which 4th and 5th graders presented their projects in English or Spanish. Daniela Terson de Paleville, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences, received funding for the program from the American Physiology Society, which has sponsored PhUN each year since 2005 at K-12 schools around the country. Students received backpacks, coloring books, heart models and t-shirts for their participation. Faculty who participated in the program were Jason Immekus, Associate Professor ELEOD, Claudio Maldonado, Department of Physiology and Biophysics. The following CEHD students assisted with the program: Graduate students: Ben Jones (EXP), Sarah Sunderman (EXP), and Wesley Newman (EXP); Un-dergraduate students: Alicia Akin (HSS), Caitlin Gilmore (HSS), Jasmine Ray (HSS), and Samuel Tunget (HSS).

Carpenter Organizes EdD NetworkBradley Carpenter, Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development, organized an informal networking meeting for women of color that are in the Educational Leadership Ed.D. program. The first meeting

was held in early February and the group will continue to meet monthly. Dr. Carpenter will assist the group in securing speakers and expanding the reach of the group to include other program areas. The group includes the following CEHD students: Tiffanie Dix; Erica Young; Cassie Watkins; Terrie Davenport; Tamela Compton; Vanessa Posey; Angelique Scherer; LaRhonda Mathies; Kathy Stovall; Rhonda George; DeNay Speaks; Whitney Stewart; Terri Blackman; and Carla Kent.

MTRP Celebrates 30th AnniversaryMikkaka Overstreet, Director of The Minority Teacher Recruitment Project (MTRP) and Assistant Professor in the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education, is organizing the MTRP 30th anniversary

celebration, which will be held on Friday, March 11th, 4 - 6 p.m., at the University Club. Students and community partners will share stories about how the program helped them and the impact they are having in the schools. In addition, Dr. Overstreet recently published a children’s book titled, Severus Comes Home, which she will be sharing for the first time on March 3rd at J.B. Atkinson Academy’s African American Read In.

ELEOD Faculty Win Most Awards at AHRDCEHD faculty in the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development (ELEOD) received more awards than any other education institution that attended the annual Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD) conference. The recipients are as follows:

• Kevin Rose, Assistant Professor - Cutting Edge Award (Top Ten Papers Submitted to the 2016 AHRD Conference), “Examining Organizational Citizenship Behavior in the Context of Human Resource Development: An Integrative Review of the Literature” • Kevin Rose, Matt Bergman, Brad Shuck, Assistant Professors, and Devon Twyford (ELEOD graduate) - EF Holton Paper of the Year for, “Skunked: An Integrative Review Exploring the Consequences of the Dysfunctional Leader and Implications for Those Employees Who Work for Them”• Ann Herd, Brad Shuck, Assistant Professors, and Rod Githens - HRD Excellence in Scholarly Practice for, “Harnessing a Learning Culture: Creating Strategic Alignment in Learning Through a Strategic Imagining Process”• Brad Shuck - AHRD Early Career AwardDr. Shuck stated that those who were most impressive at the conference were the ELEOD students - Tracey Richardson, Melissa Taylor, and Christine Romesburg - who represented their

Student NewsJeffrey Levine, a doctoral student in the Educational Leadership and Organizational Development program, is a recipient of the 2016 Sport and Recreation Law Association’s (SRLA) Bernard Patrick Maloy Graduate Student Research Paper Award. Levine’s paper was an analysis of the NFL Commissioner’s discipline authority. He will present his paper at the SRLA conference in New Orleans where he will also be presented the award.

Hannah Steen, a graduate student in the College Student Personnel (CSP) program, was selected to receive the Dr. Michael Cuyjet Outstanding Graduate Student Award from the College Personnel Association of Kentucky.

Jessika English, a doctoral student in the Educational Leadership program, will present her proposal, “Advocating for the Counselor Role,” at the annual meeting of the Kentucky Association for Secondary and College Admission Counselors (KSSCAC), which will be held in mid-March in Owensboro, KY.

Student NewsDoctoral students, Joanna Drinane and Chinwe Idigo, in the Department of Counseling and Human Development (ECPY) along with Jeff Valentine, Associate Professor in ECPY, are recipients of the Most Valuable Paper Award for 2015, which is presented by The Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy. The paper, “Psychotherapy effects in meta-analysis: How accurate are treatment effects?” was published in Psychotherapy, an American Psychological Association publication.

Alumni News

Lamia Shnawa, a graduate of the M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership with a concentration in English as a Second Language, shared her story with Mark Hebert on the UofL Today radio show about working as an interpreter for the U.S. Army in Iraq where she feared for her life. Hear her story...

Candace Lamb, a graduate of the College Student Personnel M.Ed. program, was selected to receive the New Professional Award from the College Student Personnel Association of Kentucky.

Joshua J. DeWar, a graduate of the MAT in Elementary Education program, was honored by the Kentucky Department of Education and Ashland Inc as one of 24 outstanding Kentucky educators to receive the 2016 Ashland Inc. Teacher Achievement Awards.

Kevin Sherman, a graduate of the M.S. in Human Resources and Organizational Development program, has been promoted to Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy. He currently serves as an Officer Recruiter and Division Officer responsible for recruitment.

Joshua S. Nicholas, a graduate of the M.S. in Sport Administration, joined Eastern Kentucky University as Associate Director of Development.

CEHD Sponsor for CWCL and Black Family ConferenceThe CEHD will be a sponsor for the 2016 College Women Leadership Conference, which will be held at UofL on April 2nd. The Women’s Center and Women for Women Student Board are coordinating the conference. The event draws women from higher education institutions across the state to participate in a variety of sessions and workshops related to leadership skills, networking, advocacy, and much more. In addition, the CEHD and Diversity Committee were sponsors of the 43rd Annual Dr. Joseph McMillan National Conference on the Black Family in America, which was held in late February.
