2018 was another impactful year at North Helpline. Every week, over 1,700 people accessed our services in order to be fed and stay housed. We are able to sustain this work because so many people in the community worked together to provide help to our neighbors in need. Each individual who supports North Helpline makes a difference, including people from community groups, businesses, and faith-based organizations. We look forward to 2019, continuing to make sure our neighbors have food on the table and a roof overhead. All year round, it is tremendously meaningful to help others obtain the basic needs that affirm their human dignity and worth.

Here is an overview of some major events from 2018:

Last January, the closing of Sam’s Club presented a significant loss, because at the time we were receiving almost one quarter of our food from the store. Over the course of the year, we strived to fill the gaps at the food bank. TOY DISTRIBUTION AND HOLIDAY CHEER

KELLY’S KORNERSPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR END OF YEAR DONORS

CELEBRATING 2018 AND WELCOMING THE NEW YEAR (CONT’D)

We had a tremendous outpouring of support from the community when we sent out the call for help to get gifts. Not only did our friends bring us toys, but you also spread the word and we got to meet many new faces who are now part of the North Helpline family.

Everyone helped make the holidays all the more special for parents, grandparents, and kids.

415 children received gifts during North Helpline’s toy distribution at Journey Church! Everyone who donated toys and gifts made a real difference, helping spread the holiday cheer. In fact, you did such an awesome job responding to our need, after our distributions we were able to send our left over toys to Treehouse, a nonprofit supporting kids in foster care.

We would like to give a shout out to everyone who donated gifts for making the toy distribution special. One business that surprised us by being particularly supportive in December is Bob’s Lake City Liquors. First, in early December, with support from their customers, they donated 3,358 pounds of nonperishable food. Then, when they heard about the toy distribution, our friends from Bob’s Liquors donated a huge number of toys!

The support of our community in 2018 made all the difference in the world to North Helpline and the people we serve. To get to witness the outpouring of support when we had a great need for toys was a sight to behold. I am truly grateful to be a part of this community.

I have some staffing updates to share for 2019. Rick has rejoined our team as Office Coordinator and taken the reigns of the Grocery Rescue program once again.

We also have a change in our AmeriCorps VISTAs program. Since 2013, my first year at North Helpline, we have hosted 10 AmeriCorps VISTAs. In March we will reach the end our contract and our staff will shrink by two. Each AmeriCorps VISTA has been such a key part of

how we have grown to serve our community in so many ways, and we thank them. In 2019 we are working on growing our Emergency Services team both at Bitter Lake and Lake City. Please reach out if you are interested in working in that office helping to register people for services and providing household items. We are also actively looking for front desk volunteers!

With Gratitude,

Kelly BrownExecutive [email protected]

Thank you to the great number of you who donated last few months of year. Many others donated all year round, and you made a tremendous impact on your neighbors who visit North Helpline.

In June, through a grant from the Boeing Employees Community Fund, North Helpline purchased two brand new Grocery Rescue vans. Every year, volunteers drive hundreds of thousands of pounds of food from stores to North Helpline for food bank distribution.

In the summer, we held a nutrition campaign raising funds to increase the amount of fresh food available to our neighbors. First and foremost, our neighbors need to make sure they have food in their bellies. Once this basic need of fighting hunger is met, people thrive when they have a variety of fresh, nutritious foods which they find at North Helpline. Summer is a busy time without a doubt, with loads of community activities and events. We enjoyed a great turnout

at both of our open houses in Lake City and to celebrate our one year anniversary at the Bitter Lake Food Bank. Shout out to the P-Patch volunteers and Farmer’s markets for donating summer produce!

Toward year’s end, things got even busier at North Helpline! Annual traditions included the choir concert at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, the Pub Crawl in Lake City, and the Thanksgiving Turkey Drive at Fred Meyer. In December, the toy drive made sure families in need had a good holiday season with plenty of gifts for their children.

At the end of 2018, donors helped our holiday campaign meet and exceed our goal! Your generosity ensures that our neighbors

are housed and fed, providing resources to explore new ways to best serve people in need. Thank you to each and every person who helped us reach our goal.

North Helpline was also included in the 2019/2020 city council budget which will double the number of families we are able to

help stay in their homes through our eviction and utility shutoff prevention support. We also want to thank our partners Valley Cities Behavioral and Rotacare, who continue to provide excellent health care in our clinic.

We can’t wait to see what 2019 brings!
