CELEBRATING ONE YEAR ON WITH ART AND MUSIC AT THE HARE & HOUNDS & BLEACH

This body of work has developed through the documentation of the growth of Brighton music venue BLEACH during its first year.

The work exhibited features diptychs, exploring the balance between performer & spectator and the energies between the two.

Artists include: Kristian Bell, The Wytches / Theo Verney, Theo Verney.

Artistic duo Laura Brown & Steve Brown are emerging photographers based in Brighton.

Both are avid followers of the D.I.Y approach to photography and work with cult cameras such as the Yashica T series. Laura and Steve and inspired by artists such as Synchrodogs & Terry Richardson.

The pair’s newest venture sees a collaboration with artist Emma Langguth and the subsequent creation of ILK. Under ILK the three have combined forces to work across photography, film & visual art.

Sandie Levent is a graphic designer from France. Obsessively passionate about music and image-making, she naturally started photographing concerts while living in Paris. After she moved to Brighton at the end of 2013, quite ostensibly for its art and music scene, she became part of the online collective Brighton Noise, covering anything from large events at the Dome to first-timers in pubs’ basements.

Because of this somewhat recent involvement with Brighton’s music scene, her personal experience of photographing live bands is closely tied to BLEACH’s first few months of existence, of which these are a subjective record. They range from the Boon Issue 5 launch party less than a month after the club’s opening, to the consecration of sorts that was Blood Red Shoes’ intimate set during Drill Festival last December.

Sandie also draws posters, merch artwork and record sleeves, in a style inspired by psychedelic era Art-Nouveau revivalists. She’s founder and art director of YearZero, a small creative outfit dedicated to building affordable promotional tools for artists, labels and publishers.

Olly Dall, aka “PolarSnap”, has a huge passion for instant photography. His Instax-Art is a combination of a one off instant photo mixed with a digital background.

Olly, who has been building his Brighton-based business for over a year, has been chosen as a representative for Fujifilm Instax UK at this year’s Photography Show being held on 21st-24th at The NEC, Birmingham.

Olly: “The best thing about instant photography is every photo is unique, so rather than being snap happy you limit yourself to

that one perfect moment. With my Instax-Art I like to vary my subjects; from nature to capturing people doing what they love, whether that’s a job or a hobby. art that Brighton offers which most people don’t discover, so I’m giving it that chance to stand out in my Instax Art.

When not creating art, PolarSnap is predominantly a hiring service for brand promotions, weddings and events. Olly has created a team that is obsessed with instant photography and all equally agree that the average photo booths are old hat.

Will Blood is an artist/designer from Brighton, UK. His interests lie within the macabre side of nature and he is inspired by everything within and out of the living world.

Since becoming freelance in late 2011 he has worked for a large variety clients worldwide, creating everything from hand drawn logos to illustrated music packaging whilst also trying to progress and develop his own work as an artist.

Now planning his third solo exhibition, his previous ‘the bare bones’ (a collection of 28 cartoon characters skeletons) and ‘lizards, etc’ (a retrospective of 2014) both were a huge success, selling a large portion of the framed work and gaining a steady following.

Androo Carey is a Bahamian born graphic artist and illustrator that currently lives in London. He is inspired by sea creatures, Bahamian and ancient history, mysticism, visionary, psychedelic art and popular culture.

Androo likes making detailed, allegorical illustrations. He turns most of these illustrations into screen prints which he sells online at www.androo.co

The 3 piece he has on display at the Hare & Hounds are ink drawings done on Bristol board. Two of them (The True Knot & Tourne Sol) are explorations of the emotions he experienced after being diagonosed and successfully

treated for Tuberculosis over a period of 18 months. The third piece is a motherf*cking sorcerer.

Androo is available for collaborations, commissions and any other sort of design/art related projects.

TAYA DERMO∙ I L L U S T R A T I O N ∙

During adolescence Taya’s passion for art was at its peak. At this time she attempted to pursue the dream of becoming a tattoo artist; unfortunately due to the nature of the work it became near enough impossible to find a respectable studio that would take her on as an apprentice, to learn the trade she so longed to be a part of.

Disheartened by the rejection, Taya stopped drawing and painting and withdrew into herself; until recently Taya reignited her passion once more. Originally her sole concept of drawing was the study of traditional tattoo art, however

as she matured her interests have developed and matured with her to a much broader scale of technique and subject.

Taya’s subjects focus on the beautiful as well as the macabre. Influenced greatly by studies of life and death. Her colour palette is limited but contrasting to reflect the direct parallels between subjects. Each piece she creates has had hours of love and has been scrutinised to perfection; to the point of nearly losing her sanity.

After gaining a degree from Nottingham Trent University in photography, Joe moved to Brighton, where he currently works closely with the video production company Other Finger Films, as well as freelancing under his own name. His photography is inspired by the abnormalities in the everyday, commonly documenting the relationship between humans and objects.

Often deviating from his preferred medium, Joe’s illustrations are a strange mash-up of cartoons and a darker, twisted reality; which he describes as an attempt to try and illustrate the obscurity within his own imagination.

Using colour only to emphasise, imaginary creatures creep from dark shadows onto the page, revealing curiosities, fears and inspirations.

Nick graduated from Central St Martin’s in 2012, and immediately got a job in a restaurant to fill in the gaps between freelance illustration work. A close friend had just started assisting Logan Plant in the earliest iterations of Beavertown Brewery’s beers and suggested he do a label for the first experimental “Alpha Series” beer, “Gamma Ray,” and then subsequently “Black Betty.” Meeting with the guys at Dukes Brew and Que, to discuss the designs, he noticed how much fun it looked working there, so switched jobs to being a waiter there along side his freelance work.

He would show his portfolio and new work to Logan whenever he was in, and would suggest designs for new beers which were used on nearly all the following experimental beers. Eventually Nick was focusing all his creative efforts on Beavertown, and it was time to break

the surly bonds of the service industry and move to Beavertown (now growing rapidly in size) as full time “art director.”

Along with the decision to put their beer into cans came the decision for Beavertown to re-brand completely, as the old branding was deemed inappropriate for cans. Gamma Ray and Black Betty now have re-vamped versions of the original “Alpha Series” artwork, and the other core beers maintain the ideals of the old branding with more can friendly artwork - stripping out any texture / watercolours due to print limitations.

Nick’s role at Beavertown developed into proving all visuals and branding, web support and social media managing, meaning his visual identity is forever intertwined with Beavertown’s, which he considers the luckiest job in the world.

Celebrating 400 years of originality, Grolsch has commissioned 400 unique pieces of art from artists around the globe focusing on its distinctive ‘pop top’ bottle. This experimental tour kicked off in London on 10th March but The Hare and Hounds has been lucky enough to be given 4 for display during our art exhibition birthday week.

Company ‘Graffiti Life’ built an installation last week in Shoreditch, in 400 minutes using

400 bottles using street artists and celebrating the lager brand’s credentials of “originality”

The tour will be visiting all corners of the UK in a roadshow from London to Manchester

A milestone birthday to celebrate and what better way to do it than with art.
