The heart of Growing in Grace is the music. The songs appearing in each unit have been carefully written to ensure they are developmentally appropriate for the child, both theologically and musically. With understandable texts, singable melodies, and interesting accompaniments, these songs will help each child develop his or her natural singing skills, increase in musical knowledge, and grow spiritually.
The theme, Be Strong in the Lord, is founded on Ephesians 6:10. Songs and musical activities reinforce the scriptural truths of having courage, being patient, enduring hardships without giving up, loving God and others, and experiencing God’s grace.
This curriculum package includes two CDs with demonstration and accompaniment recordings, abundant teaching materials, and colorful visuals. Song Teaching Steps offer easy-to-follow instructions and activities for groups of all sizes. Additional resources are available online at www.growing-in-grace.com.
New Curriculum Feature: PrintReady• PrintReady folders contain multi-page visuals that
have been combined into one full-sized image. The images are ready to print on large-format printers or to import into multi-media presentation software.
Steps for Using Growing in Grace • Print the Checklists first to track items as they are

the items.
Printing Tips• Ensure the Auto Rotate and Center option is

SONG TEACHING STEPS
“Put on the Armor of God”
Be Strong in the Lord Fall—Younger © 2016 Celebrating Grace, Inc. All rights reserved.“Put on the Armor of God” Song Teaching Steps, page 1
1. Introduce the song by teaching motions.• Demonstrate the motions for each phrase. Then have the children do them
with you. Point to Be Strong in the Lord Theme Poster as you demonstrate each piece of armor.
° Fighting—Cross arms with closed fists in front of chest.
° Not against a country or nation—Move arms down and out like the safe signal in baseball. Hold in position through nation.
° we’re fighting—same as Fighting
° evil—same as Not against . . .
° for the Lord—sign language for Lord (move right hand L from left shoulder down to right waist)
° belt of truth—Move hands from mid-waist around to sides as if forming the outline of a belt.
° the vest of godliness—With open palms facing body at shoulders, bring hands straight down to hip level.
° Put on the armor of God—Place fists slightly above head on Put, pull down on armor (putting on armor); right hand points to heaven while left fist remains at shoulder level on God.
° sandals of peace—Point to feet with two fingers (peace sign) of both hands on the half-note beat.
° the shield of faith—Place right fist against left flat palm (as if holding shield), and pulse two half-note beats.
° helmet of salvation—Form a “helmet” with hands above head on helmet; bring the “helmet” down to crown of head on salvation.
° the sword of the Spirit—Move right hand to left hip, “unsheath” sword on sword; point the “sword” toward heaven on Spirit.
° for the Lord! (last measure)—Raise arms and point toward heaven with pointer fingers of both hands.
• Play Demo 3, and lead children to perform the motions while you sing through measure 34. Stop the recording.
Teaching TipIf you do not want to teach all of the motions in one session, divide them into two sets by teaching motions for Section A then Section B. Teach Section A motions during the first two sessions, and add Section B motions during the third and fourth sessions.
MATERIALS NEEDED• Score• Student Pages• MP3 or CD Demo 3• MP3 or CD Track 19• MP3 or CD Player• Be Strong in the Lord

PREPARATION• Print and prepare visuals.• Write A on three pieces
of the same color of construction paper, B on two pieces of a second color, and Ending (Tag) on a third color.
• Place only the North and South Mouth and Articulate Add-ons on the Be a Strong Singer Visual for Step 4. Place the remaining Add-ons for Step 5.

2. Discover the form of the song.• Play Demo 3, and have the children do motions, listen, and count how many
times the Fighting section occurs. (Three)
• Tell them you will label that part of the music as Section A. Display the three A pages with space between them.
• Play Demo 3 again, and have them do motions and listen for the sections that mention the pieces of armor. Ask them to listen specifically for how many pieces of armor are mentioned. Point to the pieces of armor on the theme poster to help them count. (Six)
• Tell them you will call that part of the music Section B. Place the two B construction paper pages in between the A’s.
• Ask if anyone noticed a difference between the first Section B and the second Section B. (First Section B was twice as long as the second one; first one mentions four pieces of armor, and the second one mentions two pieces of armor.) Write the number 4 on the first Section B page and the number 2 on the second Section B page.
• Explain that the composer add two extra we’re fighting evil for the Lord phrases, and that part of the music is called the Ending, or Tag. Place the Ending (Tag) page to the right of the last A page.
• Point to the form pages and tell them that the form of this song is:
B
(4)A B A A Ending
(Tag)(2)
• Distribute Student Pages.
• Stand children, and have them sing the entire song with Demo 3, watching their music and not performing motions.
Teaching TipExplain that form is the overall structure, or plan, of a piece of music. Also tell children that a tag ending adds a nice finish to a song, like icing on a cake or the cherry on an ice cream sundae.
3. Memorize the song.• Echo sing any problem spots.
• Write key words on the board and point to parts of the armor on the theme poster to help children remember the text.
OptionEnlarge Armor of God Add-ons from Activity A, and display them as a rebus to help children remember the text instead of pointing to the pieces of armor on the theme poster.

• Play Demo 3, and lead children to sing the entire song while performing motions.
• Ask a volunteer to erase two or three key words from the board, and repeat.
• Ask another volunteer to erase more words, and repeat with Track 19.
• Remove the theme poster and continue erasing words until the children can sing from memory with Track 19 or piano accompaniment.
4. Work on pronunciation.• Call attention to the North and South Mouth and Articulate labels on Be a
Strong Singer Visual. Discuss the importance of singing nice tall vowels and articulating (pronouncing clearly) consonants.
• Guide children to sing measures 7-10 with tight lips and lazy consonants. Discuss the difference in sound.
Teaching TipExperiencing the opposite of what you are asking the children to do sometimes makes a bigger impact than trying to explain how to do it correctly. The children will also have a lot of fun!
• Ask the children to sing the entire song again, using Strong Singer characteristics and pretending to sing for a group of people who have never heard the powerful words of this song.
5. Polish.• Echo sing any problem spots.
• Display Be a Strong Singer Visual with all Add-ons in place. Review key points to be a strong singer.
• Ask a volunteer to read Ephesians 6:10-11.
• Lead children to sing the entire song and perform motions with Track 19 or piano accompaniment.
