SONG TEACHING STEPS

“Sing to the Lord a New Song”

“Sing to the Lord a New Song” Song Teaching Steps, page 1 All Creation Sings Fall—Older © 2017 Celebrating Grace, Inc. All rights reserved.

1. Listen and move.• Teach the following movements to be performed on a dotted-quarter-note beat:

° Chorus (meas. 5-13, 25-32, 42-49, 50-57)—Step-touch right/left.

° Verses (meas. 14-24)—Clap four times, pat knees four times, clap four times, pat knees six times.

° Bridge (meas. 33-41)—Step forward four times, step back four times, step forward four times, step back four times, step in place two times.

° Ending—On song in measure 58, make jazz hands down at sides with palms forward, holding in position until the cutoff.

• Play Demo 2, and lead children to do the movements.

2. Teach the Chorus (meas. 5-12) and Verses (meas. 14-23).• Distribute Student Pages and pencils.

• Echo sing measures 5-8 in two-measure phrases.

• Ask children to listen as you sing measures 9-12. Ask them if these two measures are the same as or different from the first two phrases in measures 5-8. (Phrase 1 is the same; phrase 2 is different.)

• Echo sing measures 11-12.

• Play Demo 2, and have children sing the Chorus. Stop the recording at measure 13.

• Echo sing Verse 1 in four-measure phrases. Gradually pull a large rubber band, stretchy toy, or Hoberman Sphere open in front of your waist as you sing each phrase as a visual reminder to sing each phrase smoothly and on one breath.

• Repeat with Verse 2.

• Have children circle the repeat sign in measure 22.

• Ask if anyone knows what the repeat sign means. (Go back to the forward repeat sign at measure 5, and repeat, singing Verse 2 the second time through.) Ask children to circle the repeat sign in measure 5.

• Play Demo 2, and lead children to sing from the beginning through Verse 2. Listen to see if the children follow the second ending correctly and sing high at the end of Verse 2. Stop the recording at measure 24.

Teaching TipBefore teaching this song, decide how you want to pronounce new and news In singing, nyu and nyuz are usually preferred, but noo and nooz are fine.

POSSIBLE TEACHING SEQUENCE• Rehearsal 1: Steps 1-2• Rehearsal 2: Steps 1 and 3-4• Rehearsal 3: Step 5• Rehearsal 4: Steps 6-7• Repeat Steps as needed.



3. Teach the Group 1 sequence in the Bridge (meas. 33-40).• Assemble the Sequence Visual as shown:

• Ask children to locate the Group 1 part in measure 33 (bottom line).

• Sing measures 33-38 for the children, pointing to the words on the Sequence Visual as you sing.

• Explain that the melody is the same for each phrase, but it begins on a higher starting pitch each time. Tell them that in music this kind of melody is called a sequence.

• Echo sing measures 33-40, pointing to the Sequence Visual.

• Sing the last phrase of the Bridge for the children, pointing to the top line on the visual. Ask if this phrase is part of the sequence. (No, the melody is different.)

• Lead children to sing the Group 1 part in measures 25-40, referring to the Sequence Visual at the appropriate time.

4. Work on dynamics.• Distribute Student Pages and pencils.

• Play Demo 2, and have children sing the entire song, Group 1 part only.

• Review notes where needed.

• Ask children to locate and point to measure 33 in their music.

• Lead them to find and circle the dynamic markings in measures 33 (p), 35 (P), 37 (F), and 39 (f).

• Review the meanings of the dynamic markings—piano (soft), mezzo-piano (medium soft), mezzo-forte (medium loud), forte (loud).

• Ask children to sing measures 33-40 with the correct dynamics.

• Remind children that singing with appropriate dynamics makes their singing more musical and engaging to hear.

5. Teach the Group 2 part.• Distribute Student Pages.

• Ask children to find and point to measure 25 in their music.

• Have everyone sing the Group 1 part in measures 25-32.

• Ask them to sing the Group 1 part again while you sing the Group 2 part. Have the pianist play the Group 1 part with the children.

• Point out that the Group 2 part starts after the Group 1 part but that both parts begin on the same pitch.



• Echo sing the Group 2 part in measures 25-32.

• Ask a few strong singers to sing the Group 2 part with you as the pianist plays the part.

• Repeat, letting a few other strong singers sing the Group 2 part.

• Assign the Group 2 part to a few strong singers, and review both parts separately.

• Repeat for the Bridge section (meas. 33-40).

• Point out that the Group 2 part in measures 33-40 is also a sequence and uses the same dynamics as the Group 1 part. Instead of continuing to move up, this part moves back and forth between two pitches, always ending on the pitch on which the next phrase begins.

• Assign Group 1 and Group 2, and lead children to sing both parts in measures 25-40. Ask another teacher to sing with Group 1 while you sing with Group 2.

• Point out that both groups sing the Chorus melody in unison in the new key in measures 42-49. Note that the Group 2 part in measures 50-55 is the same as the Group 2 part in measures 25-30 in the previous key.

• Lead children to sing both parts in measures 42-55. Ask another teacher to sing with Group 1 while you sing with Group 2.

• Divide into two groups. Play Demo 2, and have everyone sing through measure 55 and listen to the Ending in measures 56-59.

6. Teach the Ending (meas. 56-59).• Distribute Student Pages.

• Ask children to look at the Group 1 part in the Ending (meas. 56-59).

• Echo sing the top note of the Group 1 part on solfège syllables, using Body Scale.

• Assign groups, and sing through the entire song with piano accompaniment or Track 20.

• Review the Group 1 and 2 parts as needed.

• Remind children to sing the sequence section (Bridge) with the correct dynamics.

• Point to Vowel Visuals as a reminder for children to sing with tall vowels on song, wondrous, glory, exalt, and high. Remind them to lessen the r sound in earth, works, our, and Lord.

• Work to memorize Verse 1 and Verse 2 by asking children to circle important words.

1. Discuss Advent.• Ask children if they know the meaning of Advent.

• Allow time for answers, leading children to understand that Advent means coming. During the four weeks of Advent as we await His coming, we celebrate the hope, peace, joy, and love that the birth of Jesus brings to us.

2. Introduce the game.• Have children place their markers on the START space.

• Decide who will go first.

• Explain that they will take turns tossing the Game Cube and moving the number of spaces indicated.

• Open a Bible to Luke 2, and discuss the events of Christmas as pictured on the gameboard.

° The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to tell her that she would have a Baby.

° This special Baby would be named Jesus.

° Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth but had to make a long journey to Bethlehem to be counted in the census.

° When they arrived in Bethlehem, they could not find a place to stay because there were so many people in Bethlehem for the census.

° One of the innkeepers realized that Mary was going to have a baby and let her and Joseph stay in his stable, a place where his animals lived.

° Jesus was born that night, and they laid Him in a manger bed.

° Shepherds were watching their flocks of sheep out on the hillside when an angel appeared to them.

° The angel was joined by other angels who told the shepherds not to be afraid and said, “We bring good news of great joy!” They told the shepherds they should go and find this Baby.

° So the shepherds hurried to find the Baby. When they found Him, they worshipped Him.

° Some wise men who lived far away saw a bright star in the sky and decided to make the journey to find the Christ Child.

° They took gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh and, when they found Him, they bowed down and worshipped the Child.

° Advent is a time of waiting and hoping for the coming of the Savior of the world.

SMALL GROUP ACTIVITY Moving Through Advent Game will help children review the Christmas story and learn the meaning of Advent.

• Sing the peace, joy, and love verses in subsequent weeks to coincide with your church’s celebration of Advent.

Charles Wesley, Hymn Writer

Charles Wesley (1707-1788) was an English hymn writer and a founder of the Methodist Church. Hymn writing came easily for Charles. He often wrote hymns at home, at church, in the fields, riding a horse, or walking down the street. All in all, Charles wrote more than sixty-five hundred hymns.

When he was a young man, Charles and his brother, John, traveled to the English colony of Georgia, where Charles served as an assistant to Governor James Oglethorpe. On the boat to America, Charles met some German Christians called Moravians. Their faith and hymn singing had a profound effect upon Charles. Later, a Moravian friend, Peter Böhler, told Wesley, “Had I a thousand tongues, I would praise Him with them all.” That statement inspired Wesley to write “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing” on the anniversary of his conversion. This hymn reminds us that our Redeemer deserves the highest praise and service we can offer.
