Celia Mara may have a dark voice and a serious message but Santa

Rebeldia is an inherently fun album, for the most part at least.

Growing up in Minas Gerias amidst the drums of Afro-Brazilian

religion Candomble, eerie Christian chants and melancholic local

folklore has clearly had an influenced on Celia and her music bears

    the proof.

She often goes under the moniker bastardista, the music being her

    bastard offspring.

On the track Nana Buruke gospel choruses rub up against lingering

guitar riffs, while on Ilegal da Geladeria its computer effects and the

wonderfully Brazilian sound of the cuica.

Elsewhere there hints of reggaeton, punk, samba-funk and Spanish

pop with more traditional Brazilian sounds of Brazil popping up

    though out.

At school, its claimed, her gender precluded her from playing

percussion and her class (read wealth) placed other instruments out

of her reach. Now shes getting her own back rattling through a long

list of instruments and drawing on a range of sounds.

This is one for the hostels and student halls of Europe and South

America; Manu Chao meets Yerba Buena meets Carlinhos Brown

    Brazil

The dark and rather unique voice of Celia Mara is nicely complimented by a sunny admixture ofBrazilian grooves. Her political sensibilities also shine through, as she continues her tiradesagainst all manner of discrimination and inequality, with the added benefit that while beinghectored, you can also dance to it.

JUNGLE'S TEAM REVIEWS THE ELITE SQUAD DVD,

SKANK, CELIA MARA, WATCHA CLAN AND MORE

    Elite Squad

    Words: Sara Puerta

    Label: Optimum

    +++

After winning a Golden Bear at the last Berlin Film Festival, JosPadilha's Elite Squad went on to spark controversy over the way itdepicted drug trafficking and violence in Rio. In the UK, the moviedebuted last August and will be launched on DVD on the 19th. Extrasinclude an exclusive interview with the director.

Based on the novel Elite Squad, written by ex-police officers AndrBatista and Rodrigo Pimental, the film reveals the ins and outs of drugtrafficking in Rio de Janeiro. Unlike City of God, Elite Squad depicts theday to day routine from the point of view of a captain of the BOPE, theSpecial Police Operations Battalion of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police.

There was also some stir due to the fact the move was widelybootlegged even before it reach the screens in Brasil, which makes onewonder if the suggested retail price - 19.90 - isn't a bit too much.

    Santa Rebeldia - Celia Mara

    Words: Alba Cabral

    Label: Globalista

    ++

With a large dose of humour, Celia Mara is launching yet another CDpacked with disturbing lyrics "that are sang loudly to disguise the pain".The irreverant tone of the compositions is also explicit in the theatricalway in which Celia sings: some verses seem more spoken than sung.Whilst her earlier work was always characterised by a fusion of Latinrhythms, funk and samba, on Santa Rebeldia repetitive electronic beatsreign supreme.

    Estandarte - Skank

    Words: Fernando Duarte

    Label: Sony / BMG

    +++

The pun is too tempting for a band famous for songs with footballreferences: Brasilian four-piece Skank misses some sitters in whatcould be an interesting album for its departure from the Britpop-inspired previous works (Cosmotron and Carrossel). In theory, the ideaof flirting with an electro-rock atmosphere sounds fresh, but in practiceit stumbles with lyrics much more suited to the usual pop formula, as

well as the scatting made simultaneously so famous and irritatinglyoverused by singer and lead guitarist Samuel Rosa - as anyone whoremembers Skank's assassination of The Police's Wrapped Around YourFinger will remember. There are exceptions, though: 'Para-Raio' and'Cano spera' and 'Notcias do Submundo' are great songs in whichthe band sounds fresh and spontaneous as Cristiano Ronaldo in hisheyday. But three tracks out of 12 is a very low score

The city of Marseille is France's cultural melting pot, with large andlong-established immigrant communities from across the world. It'salso home to the Watcha Clan, the multinational five-piece whose debutalbum truly reflects the city's diversity. With songs in six differentlanguages, including Spanish, French and Arabic, Diaspora Hi-Fi blendstraditional north-African sounds with gypsy folk, reggae and a wholehost of electronic and dub influences to create something truly unique. This is nu-world music at its most diverse, and even though some of

If you thought that the most progressive Nu Brazilian musicwas stillbeing hatched in the soundlabs of Sao Paulo, guess again, because oneof the best new Brazilian records to come around this year isactuallyfrom Austria. Thats right, Austria, land of Mozart, Straussand, um,Falco. But Brazilian transplant Celia Mara builds a bridgebetween herhomelands lush tropical sounds and chilly Teutonticelectronica.Singing mostly in Portuguese, her big voice ridesMPBsamba bossa nova, forroand even tango rhythms over jazzy and dubbyelectronic breakbeats(programmed and arranged by Geri Schuller and MichaelKreiner). The resultis Bastardista, her fourth album chock full of sophisticated, mostlydowntempo chillout tracks that Bebel Gilberto would kill for.Standouttracks include Jade, Folha and Cacador de Almas.

A little bit of everything Brazilian, from electro to dancefloor, from ethno to pop. Sung inPortuguese, English and French, she amplifies the message implicit in the title theres no suchthing as purity, lets get mixed up here! And she does, with a remix by Frankie Valentine included. In her own words, she is "reducing the complicated to the rhythm of your heart".

There were plenty of highs with possibly the highest number of seminal

albums from global artists hitting the shelves in any one year ever. We

identify global bricalagismo as a new trend with the trickle of artists fighting

globalism through global mix and mash up became a flood. (See below).

At the same time, bombs, war, natural disasters, starvation and their grim

colleagues hit everyone from London to Mali, Kashmir to New Orleans,

Central America to Zimbabwe and Sudan. All this on the heels of the

Tsunami that hit Boxing Day last year. In the face of these, we looked to

our politicians and they were found wanting. Instead people around the

world reached out to each other.

So here are my picks of the year, please use the comments box below to

    add your own!

Rappin Hood - Sujeito Homen 2

Who could fail to warm to an album that drew on classic Brazilian tunes

for samples and then got heavyweights like Gilerto Gil and Caetano Veloso

to take part? A seminal Brazilian hip hop album and an instant classic.

    Thione Seck - Orientation

A thing of great beauty emerged from this Bollywood meets Senegal

venture. A fusion album that owes absolutely nothing to pandering for

western audiences and unsurprisingly captures them with its sincerity and

    warmth nonetheless.

    Laye Sowe & Daby Balde

Two great new voices from Senegal with relaxed traditional sounds

emerged and both released superb albums. Daby got the most attention

(probably deservedly) but both are big voices for the future.

Souad Massi - Honeysuckle (Mesk Elil)

A truly enchanting album from Algerian exile Souad Massi justified her

esteemed place in the global music canon but she blew everyone away

with an amazing duet with Daby Balde. Essential stuff.

    Baaba Maal and Africa 05

The year started with great hopes that finally world aid, trade, HIV and

debt relief would begin to release their crushing dead hand from Africa and

at the same time there was a conscious effort by a huge number of

cultural institutions to focus on the many positive things happening on the

continent. Bob Geldofs failure to support African musicians left a bad

taste in many peoples mouths but no one showed more dignity and

commitment than Baaba Maal. Whether talking about the problems or

putting on fantastic concerts, Baaba Maal got it right in every way.

    Mahmoud Ahmed at WOMAD

Old time Ethiopian, Mahmoud Ahmed had a triumphant debut in the UK at

WOMAD ensuring that his is, belatedly, going to be one of the names to

    watch for next year.

    Anga Diaz - Echu Mingua

This release nearly dropped off the radar but after a sparkling review in Fly

by our own Matthew Shorter, World Circuit were able to force the

newspapers to give it another listen, they did, they fell in love and the

    release took off.

    TEXT GREGORY KLEMM FEEDBACK

    You wouldnt expect some

    of the best nu-Brazilian

music to be coming out of

    Austria. But this is where

    multi-talented musician

    Celia Mara indulges her

    Brazilian heritage by

    creating a mix of electronic

    and acoustic melodies.

    When recording, Mara is

    nearly a one-woman show

    she composes, sings,

    plays guitar and arranges

    her own songs. Her third

album Bastardista, released in May, received worldwide acclaim and

remained in the world music charts for three months. On tour Mara fronts a

four-person band with one American and two Austrian musicians providing

back-up vocals, as well as live keys, bass and drums. Here Mara is in her

element. Her vocal range is remarkable and her music creates a beautifully

uplifting atmosphere. And of course, the show comes with all the flair you

    would expect from a Brazilian.

Maras performance is part of Nazim Nadirovs Ethnotronica series. The

events will bring to Moscow some of the best ethno-electronic performers

from around the world, including both unknown and established artists.

Celia Mara spices up Molodaya Gvardiya from 9 p. m. on November 4.

Tickets are 707-1415 rubles at the door.
