ResponseWareThis guide has been written for University staff wanting to use Turning Technologies ResponseWare with the TurningPoint Electronic Voting System (EVS).

ResponseWare is a web-based service the enables students to partake in TurningPoint EVS sessions by voting on their own smartphone or web-enabled device.

ResponseWare client apps are available for Apple iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad), Android and BlackBerry. Alternatively the service can be used from any web-enabled device that has a web browser that supports AJAX, JavaScript™ and HTTP requests (e.g. Internet Explorer® 7 or higher, Firefox® 2 or higher, Opera™ 9 or higher, Netscape® 8 or higher, Safari® 3 or higher)

Depending upon which version of TurningPoint you use the method by which you enable ResponseWare will vary (Option A or Option B below).

To be able to log into ResponseWare will require that CEAD approve your use of ResponseWare and then create an account for you. Please either indicate your interest in using ResponseWare when making your EVS Usage Request (http://www.surrey.ac.uk/cead/telt/support/evs/) or by emailing [email protected] to discuss your intended usage.

Option A: TurningPoint PC (PowerPoint plug-in)

Open TurningPoint

Select Tools > ResponseWare

Enable ResponseWare TIPYour Login will be your University email address. Your ResponseWare password is not synchronised with other University systems.

TIPYou are recommended to use v4.3.x or later of TurningPoint as this enables support for Custom Session IDs (see next page). All the centrally managed teaching spaces have a version of TurningPoint that is compatible with ResponseWare.

Log into ResponseWare

If logging in for the first time the system will ask you to accept the Privacy Statement and Terms of Use Agreement.

Click on Accept

The ResponseWare information screen will display showing the Session ID. This is usually a four-digit numeral unless you reserve a custom Session ID (see adjoining tip box).

Click Close

TIPAn alternative to having a new numeric Session ID for every session is to reserve your own custom Session ID that will be used for all your sessions. To do this go to http://www.rwpoll.com/ login and then click on Reserve or change your session ID Session IDs have to be unique within www.rwpoll.com and therefore you may find certain choices already taken.

The ResponseWare information screen will display showing the Session ID. This is usually a four-digit numeral unless you reserve a custom Session ID (see tip box on previous page).

Leave this window or minimise it whilst running the session

Students can install the free ResponseWare app on their iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad). Once installed they simply enter the Session ID you specify to them and then they can respond in the session.

The easiest way to obtain the ResponseWare app is via the Apple App Store. Most owners of an iOS device will be familiar with this process but it is illustrated here to aid the understanding of teaching staff who are not familiar with such devices.

Installing the ResponseWare on an iOS device

The student clicks on the App Store icon

The student searches the term Responseware

iOS ResponseWare app for students

TIPThere is a free PresenterWare app available from the Apple App Store allowing you to control the opening and closing of the polling and advancement of slides via your iOS device.

The student then has the opportunity to identify themselves:

[assuming students are encouraged to respond anonymously] Leaving the name and data fields blank the student clicks on Done

The questions polled in the session show on the student’s device:

The student clicks their chosen response option

TIPAs with the RF handsets the student can change their vote at any stage whilst the polling is open.

tWhen the session presenter closes the polling (or the countdown timer reaches its end) the polling results are shown on the student’s device:

Students with an Android mobile device can install and use a specific version of the app.

The student simply searches for ‘responseware’ on the Android Market – https://market.android.com

The Android version of the app works in the same manner as the iOS version.

TIPIn TurningPoint the results chart does not display until the presenter progresses the slideshow. It is important to note that students using ResponseWare will see the chart as soon as the polling has ended.

TIPIf using the TurningPoint correct answer indicator please be aware that the indicator does not display in ResponseWare.

Students with a BlackBerry mobile device can install and use a specific version of the app.

Currently the BlackBerry ResponseWare App is not listed on the BlackBerry Marketplace but instead can be downloaded directly from:

http://www.surrey.ac.uk/rw/

The BlackBerry version of the app works in the same manner as the

iOS version.

Students who either do not have a device compatible with the ResponseWare apps or do not want to install the app can opt to use ResponseWare Web if they have a web connected device.

The student opens a web browser

The student navigates to www.rwpoll.com

The student enters the Session ID you give them
