YMCA Stories... making an impact

Mission: The YMCA is a charitable organization that strengthens our community by providing opportunities for personal growth and active involvement for all children, adults and families.

Vision: Transforming Waterloo Region into a healthiercommunity is our priority.

Responsibility:

In 1844 the YMCA began its service to the community. One man, a young draper, at just 23 years of age, saw a need and did something about it! Sir George Williams founded the YMCA as a place to bring men together and give them something positive to do in order to improve their lives. Much has changed over the years – buildings, equipment, and programs - but the purpose and mission of the YMCA remains intact. The YMCA creates spaces and places to bring people together. We existed then and exist now to make a difference in individuals lives and provide benefit to the overall community. We know that connecting with others makes individuals stronger, and stronger individuals make a stronger community. The YMCA is a centre of community and is a vital contributor to building a healthier community in which it serves. By this we also mean that the YMCA creates centres of community every day in each of our program sites. Groups of people coming together who share common interests, ideas, information, values and goals. It happens formally in programs and activities and informally around a coffee counter, a soft sofa or locker room bench.

It happens…• At a fitness class• At the Early Years Centre where parents and children play• At a Child Care Centre where kids can just be kids, learn,

grow and explore• At a camp when youth attend with friends or make

new ones• At the Teen Zone where they have a safe place to hang out

and be themselves• In the pool where kids learn to swim and parents

gather to watch• When newcomers are supported as they settle in

their new community• When empty nesters reconnect over a game of pickle ball• While volunteers share their time and talent It happens - Individuals, children and families, across all generations, means and abilities coming together - building relationships and making connections.  In 1954, YMCA President Carl Dare shared the following remarks:

“But in this YMCA we find not only the treatment of social problems – the development of physical skills – the acceptance of the responsibility of brotherhood, we find, fun, fun for young, fun for old, the fun that comes from associating with people with common interests”.

For over 170 years the YMCA has been bringing people together!  The YMCA is a centre of community where potential grows, everyone belongs and health goals are achieved every day.  As the Chief Executive Officer and the Chairs of the Board of Directors we are privileged to be providing leadership to an organization that connects with over 85,000 individuals.

We are a community

Welcoming and open to all.Acting with compassion & concern for the well being of others.Developing people in spirit, mind and body.Treating all people with dignity.Accountable for oneself, others, our environment and the world in which we live.

Health Goals Achieved

After a heart event and surgery I felt angry and afraid. I came to the Y to get back to normal and realized health is more than a functioning body.

In this place of community and belonging I recovered my health and achieved much more than I thought possible. I feel better and that was a goal.

Everyone Belongs

My sense of community with the Y started at a young age. As a child, a teen, an adult going through a difficult time, and a stay-at-home mom, the Y has always been there for me.

I have met a lot of inspiring people at the Y and wanted to connect further so I started a weekly social group that meets to share healthy food, stories, and troubles, we care about each other. Meeting this way has enriched my life, these relationships are important to me. We all have a story and connecting benefits us all.

Potential Grows

I left family and friends to come to this new country. I didn’t speak the language or understand the culture. I wanted to be involved, to be a part of my school, to make friends, but I was alone.

I came to the Y to find help and support. I was embraced by others like me, and for the first time since I left my home, I felt like a part of a community. Now my life is full of the opportunities I came to this country to discover. I am stronger now.
