Make the Chamber

part of your New

Year’s Resolutions!

Once again a new year is upon us. There is something wonderful about a new start, isn’t there? I just love starting a new journal, opening a new calendar or starting fresh in a new year. I’m not quite sure

why it makes such a difference in our spirits, but we may go to bed with the weight of the world on our shoulders in 2012 and wake up to a whole new year the next morning and feel hopeful and optimistic.

I try not to get too crazy with setting resolutions that will sometimes (inevitably get broken). I try to avoid absolutes (I’ll never do that again...etc.) but I do always sit down and think through what I’d like to accomplish in the next year. Last year, I actually succeeded in a few (running my 1st 5K, buying my 1st house) and this year I am planning to succeed on a few more!

I’d like to encourage you to think about the Chamber when you set your New Year’s resolutions for your business. No, we can’t help you lose weight (though you could run in Race on the Ridge) or stop smoking (though our insurance plans have smoking cessation assistance). What we can help you with can be very important when it comes to the health of your business.

Perhaps you are a brand new member or maybe you have been around a while. When was the last time you popped up at a First Friday networking? Have you ever attended a Tech Tuesday training session? When you are looking for a product or service...do you check to see who is a member FIRST?

These are just a few simple suggestions on what you might be able to implement with the dawn of a new year. Don’t overwhelm yourself...we have a lot to offer. No one expects you to show up at everything we offer. In fact, that’s a common objection from businesses when we ask them to join. They say, “I’m too busy to come to your meetings.” While I am happy for them that their business is successful, I get very frustrated when people see us ONLY for our meetings.

We do have some fantastic events and opportunities for you to take advantage of, but I am also convinced that you can glean real value from the Chamber without ever setting foot in our door. I hope you’ll take some time to check out something new with YOUR Chamber in the next few months. We have a Member Orientation coming up on Friday, January 25th. It’s NOT just for new members. Or join us for our 2013 Economic Forecast Luncheon on January 17th featuring local economist Kent Gardner.

Check it out, take a chance...you never know what you might reap in 2013!

RECOMMENDED READING...

The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

M alcolm Gladwell, author of The Tipping Point, uncovers

how ideas, trends and social behavior can affect

everything from business to crime and far beyond. In his book, Malcolm

brings to life three personality types and how they affect major trends.

Connectors, social personalities that bring people together, Mavens, those

that pass along knowledge and information and Salespeople, who have a

way of spiking interest that wasn‘t previously there. The author’s theory

is that ideas, products, messages, and behaviors have the potential to

spread like viruses through the phenomenon of “word of mouth.” The book is powerful in

exploring social power and its affect on what makes things popular, good and bad. Many examples

are used throughout the book including the popularity of Hush Puppies, a complete study on the

research methods used to make Sesame Street and Blues Clues so popular, what makes certain types

of advertising successful and unsuccessful and much more. The Tipping Point from start to finish is

both informative and fascinating. -Terry Hogan, Director of Marketing & Communications

The last few months have been busy and productive

ones for this year’s Leadership Greece participants. In

addition to the monthly leadership development learning and

classroom participation, they had the opportunity to tour

both the Unity Hospital campus and Flower City Printing as

well as to hear from local business owners about the

challenges they face every day and how those challenges

have helped to make them successful.

The class members are also working as a team on several

class projects, to be completed by the end of the class year in

The Flu & You!

Flu is a serious contagious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes death. In 2009–2010, a

new and very different flu virus called “2009 H1N1” spread worldwide causing the first flu pandemic in

more than 40 years. Flu is unpredictable, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expects

the 2009 H1N1 virus to spread this season along with other seasonal flu viruses.

How does flu spread?

Most experts think that flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze

or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into

the lungs. A person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then

touching their own eyes, mouth or nose.

How long can a sick person spread flu to others?

People infected with flu shed virus and may be able to infect others from 1 day before getting sick to about 5-7 days after getting sick.

This can be longer in some people, especially children and people with weakened immune systems. This means that you may be able

to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.

How severe is illness associated with flu?

Each flu season, different flu viruses spread and affect people differently based on their body’s ability to fight infection. Even healthy

children and adults can get very sick from the flu and spread it to friends, co-workers, and family. In the United States, thousands of

healthy adults and children have to visit the doctor or are hospitalized from flu complications each year.

While flu can make anyone sick, certain people are at greater risk for severe illness resulting in hospitalization or death. This includes

older adults, young children, people with certain long term health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease and women

who are pregnant. (See “What should I do if I get sick?” for the full list of high risk persons.)
